MOHAWK - William F. Abeline, age 78, formerly of Creek Road, passed away on Sunday afternoon, May 5, 2002, in Saint Elizabeth's Medical Center, Utica.
He was born on November 24, 1923, in Herkimer, son of the late Charles and Cora Parker Abeline.
A lifelong area resident, Bill was educated in Saint Francis deSales School Herkimer and Herkimer High School.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in the 128th Infantry, third Battalion in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines.
Bill was a recipient of the Bronze Star for his heroic service in connection with operations against the enemy, a Purple Heart along with other awards and medals, and was honorably discharged in 1945.
In October of 1946, he married Kathryn B. Backell in Saint Francis deSales Church, Herkimer.
A loving union of fifty years until her passing on July 9, 1997.
He worked as an assembler for Remington Arms Company, Ilion, and later for Chicago Pneumatic retiring in 1982.
Bill had a strong love for the outdoors and nature.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He was a member of Saint Francis deSales Church, Herkimer, a life member and Past Commander of American Legion Post #38 Herkimer and a life member of Michael Pliseck VFW Post 4915 Herkimer.
He was a friend to many and will never be forgotten.
Surviving are three sisters, Ann Caswell of Herkimer, Jenny and her husband, Raymond Pettingill, of Ilion, Barbara and Richard Aubin of Titusvile, Fl; a brother-in-law, Earl "Bud" Backell of Herkimer; one sister-in-law, Joann and her husband, Kenneth Graham, of Virginia Beach; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents and wife, Kathryn, he was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret LaFountain and two brothers, John "Buster" Abeline and Charles "Bunky" Abeline.
Funeral service will be on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer.
The Reverend Mark Cunningham, Pastor of Saint Francis deSales Church, Herkimer will officiate.
Mr. Abeline will be laid to rest with military honors in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, town of Little Falls.
The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Wednesday form 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the Masonic Home, Utica, or the charity of your choice.
Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Members of Michael Pliseck VFW Post #4915 are asked to meet at the funeral home on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. for services.

Julie L. Brown
LITTLE FALLS - Julie L. Brown, 36, of Prospect Street, died on Wednesday evening December 13, 2000 in Little Falls Hospital.
A daughter of Albert Lowell and the late Helen Binney Lowell, she was born on July 3, 1964 in Utica.
She was a lifelong area resident and of the Catholic faith.
Julie had an outgoing personality, a warm and friendly smile.
She loved animals and enjoyed listening to music.
Surviving are her father, Albert Lowell of Herkimer; five sisters and their husbands, Bonnie and Paul Wentrick of Sauquoit, Linda and Alan Bouck of Ilion, Cynthia and Joseph Whitmore of Deansboro, Deborah and Ronald DeRocher of Clinton Park, Susan and Kenneth Clark of Sauquoit; three brothers, Albert Lowell of Herkimer Charles Brown and Donald Brown, both of Ilion, her step-brothers and sisters; niece and nephew, Tammy and Charles Wentrick and several other nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be on Monday at 10:00 am in FENNER FUNERAL HOME INC., 115 Court Street, Herkimer.

The family will be present in the funeral home on Monday, one-hour prior to the funeral service (9-10 am) to receive relatives and friends.
Interment will take place next spring in Greenlawn Cemetery, New Hartford.
Harold J. Bowman
HERKIMER - Harold John Bowman, age 77, of East Smith Street, died unexpectedly on January 1, 2002, in Little Falls Hospital.
He was born on August 19, 1924, in Herkimer, a son of the late David J. and Rose Knout Bowman.
A lifelong area resident, he was a graduate of Herkimer High School.
He proudly served his country during WW II, enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1943 and was honorably discharged in 1945.
In June of 1956, he married Hazel Louise Weaver.
A union of 29 years until her passing on July 11, 1985.
For over 33 years, he worked as a machinist with the Library Bureau in Herkimer.
He enjoyed the outdoors especially camping trips with the family.
Surviving are his daughters, Dale and her husband, Randy, of East Herkimer, Joanne Bailey of Dolgeville, grandchildren, Shannon Jackson and her fiancée, Brian Lafever, Shawn Jackson, Lori, Julie, Wendy and William, great-grandchildren, Shawna and Brian Lafever, a brother, Richard and his wife, Betty, of Ilion, two sisters, Grace Ingerham, Ruby and her husband, Joseph Harrer, of East Herkimer.
Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Alfred Bowman, and sister, Edna Jackson.
The family will be present in the Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. to receive relatives and friends.
A graveside service with military honors will be held in Oak Hill Cemetery next spring.
William E. Riesel
HERKIMER - William E. Riesel, 85, of 105 Protection Ave., formerly of Steuben Hill Road, passed away Monday evening, Aug. 6, 2001, in Mohawk Valley Nursing Home, Ilion.
He was born Oct. 2, 1915, in Herkimer, son of the late Frederick E. and Pauline Nitz Riesel.
A lifelong Herkimer resident, he was raised and educated in Herkimer schools.
On June 6, 1938, he married Marion Thompson in the family home in Herkimer.
From 1943 to 1963, Mr. Riesel owned and operated his own dairy farm on Steuben Hill Road.
In 1963, he started his own welding business, retiring in 1972.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Marion; a daughter, Joyce E. Riesel of Herkimer; two nephews, Timothy Riesel of Cold Brook and Richard G. Riesel of Herkimer.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Richard E. Riesel and a sister, Marion Weed.
Funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer.
Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Friday morning two hours prior to the funeral service (from 9-11 a.m.)
Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
