Sophie Rzeszot
ROME Sophie S. Rzeszot, 78, formerly of Vernon and currently of Rome, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at the University Hospital in Syracuse.
She was born in Yorkville on Dec. 3, 1923, the daughter of Albert and Catherine Piorkowski Jezowski, and attended New York Mills and Utica schools.
On Oct. 18, 1947, she married John Rzeszot in Sacred Heart of Jesus Polish National Catholic Church in New York Mills.
A marriage of love, respect, caring and sharing for over 49 years until his death on March 18, 1997.
Her survivors included a daughter, Cathy Rzeszot and her friend, Douglas Prosser of Rome; two sons, Edward and his wife, Carol Rzeszot of Dolgeville, and Chester Rzeszot and his fiancιe Dorothy Wickham of Canastota; a brother, Walter Jezowski of Utica; two sisters, Mary and her husband John Danieluk of Yorkville, and Helen Mazurowski of Utica; and three grandchildren, Rachelle and her husband, David Alig, Randi and Misuk Rzeszot, and Ryan Rzeszot.
Also included, is her great-grandson, Christopher; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. at the Kobielski-Kowalczyk Funeral Home, 284 Main St., New York Mills, and at 10 a.m. at All Saints Parish Polish National Catholic Church in Rome.
Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m.
Burial will be in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Polish National Catholic Cemetery, New Hartford.
Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the All Saints Parish Polish National Catholic Church, 801 Hickory St., Rome, NY 13440.

Ernest Claude Niles
DOLGEVILLE Mr. Ernest Claude Niles, 88, of 19 S. Main St., died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at Little Falls Hospital.
He was born on Jan. 23, 1914, in Fly Creek, a son of the late Claude and Bessie (Burns) Niles.
Ernie graduated from Ilion High School class of 1932.
Survivors include two nephews and their wives, James and Charlotte Robotham of Dolgeville, and William and Patricia Robotham of Mohawk; and one niece, Betty Backus of Ilion.
There will be no calling hours.
A service will be scheduled for the family in the spring.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Roberts-Buck Funeral Home, 3 Faville Ave., Dolgeville.
Alyce M. Kardash
ST. JOHNSVILLE Alyce M. Kardash, 81, of 1737 Mill Road, St. Johnsville, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at Little Falls Hospital.
She was born Nev. 15, 1920, in Nescopeck, Pa., the daughter of the late Karl and Mary (Breisch) Kaufman.
Her marriage to Stanley M. Kardash took place on Jan. 27, 1940, at St. James Church in Fort Plain, by Rev. Theodore J. Themm.
Mrs. Kardash was last employed at the St. Johnsville Central School District.
At one time, she worked for the former Swank Diner in St. Johnsville.
Alyce was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Fort Plain.
Survivors include her husband, Stanley; a son, Tevin Kardash and wife, Anne Buffington of Little Falls, Karen Pollock and husband Paul of Virginia, and Sherry Spartano and husband, Carlo of California; four grandchildren, Paige Spartano, Noelle Pollock and Camille and Adam Kardash.
She was predeceased by a sister.
In keeping with Alyce's wishes cremation will take place under the direction of the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville. There are no calling hours.
Interment will take place at the convenience of the family.
Frank B. Mowers
SALISBURY CENTER Mr. Frank B. Mowers, age 85, of Emmonsburg Road, and a lifelong Salisbury Center resident passed away on Wednesday morning, Feb. 20, 2002. His peaceful passing occurred in the Little Falls Hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. Mowers was born on Sept. 20, 1916 in Salisbury Center, a son of the late Leon R. and Delia (Dingman) Mowers.
He received his education in Salisbury Center schools.
Frank was married to the former Louisa Mae Cool on March 16, 1935 at the Methodist Parsonage in Salisbury Center.
Together, the couple provided each other and their family with endless love and dedication.
He was last employed as superintendent with the North Hudson Woodcraft Company.
After 40 years of faithful service to the company, he retired at the age of 62.
He was a member of the Universalist Church, Salisbury Center and was a Mason with the Dolgeville Lodge.
Among the many pastimes he pursued he enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He demonstrated an enthusiastic interest in traveling. His famous trips leaves the family with many memories.
Above all, Frank took tremendous pride in his family.
Mr. Mowers leaves his loving wife, whom he shared 66 years with, Louisa of the home address; two sons, Dean F. Mowers of Salisbury, and Robert E. Mowers of Salisbury Center along with his special friend, Anne Schuyler; two daughters, Pauline M. Knapp and husband, Thurman of Dolgeville, and Marcia J. Cigale and Edward of Little Falls; two sisters, Evelyn Tyoe of Spruce Lake, and Elva Chestney of Middleville; a sister-in-law, Edna Mowers of Little Falls; nine grandchildren, Ned Mowers and wife Sandra of Dolgeville, Denise Cramer and husband, Zane of Auburn, Stephen Mowers and wife, Lisa of Fairfield, Conn., Gary Mowers and wife, Shelly of Salisbury Center, Brett Mowers of Salisbury Center, Tanya Vickers and husband David of Salisbury Center, Lynne Lyon and husband, Richard of Dolgeville, Brad Polivka and wife, Joanne of Rome, and Teresa Cigale of Little Falls.
Also surviving, are 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins, including a special cousin, Emma Mickel of Camden.
It would be remiss to not mention the many friends in the Dolgeville and Salisbury areas that Frank leaves behind.
Preceding Frank in death were three sisters, Marie Lanphere, Dorothy Knapp, and Inez Johnston; two brothers, Harold and Raymond Mowers; one son-in-law, Archie Polivka; two daughters-in-law, Betty Jane Mowers and Irene Mowers; and two granddaughters, Julia D. Mowers and Tamala Jane Humphrey.
Frank's family invites relatives and friends to visit with them and pay their respects at the Enea Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe St., Little Falls, on Friday evening, Feb. 22, 2002, from 6-8 p.m.
The funeral will commence on Saturday morning, Feb. 23, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Enea Funeral Home chapel where prayer will be offered.
Remembrances in Mr. Mower's memory may be made to the Salisbury Center Volunteer Fire Department of the Universalist Church, Salisbury Center.

The Dolgeville Masonic Lodge will gather in a body at the funeral parlor on Friday evening at 7 to conduct a service in honor of Frank.

Lucy Fletcher
ST. JOHNSVILLE Lucy Fletcher, 85, of 7 Timmerman St., (St. Johnsville Nursing Home), and formerly of 9 Hough St., St. Johnsville, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at Faxton Hospital, Utica.
She was born July 28, 1916, in Frankfort, the daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine (LaPresto) Riscica. Lucy attended Amsterdam schools and moved to the St. Johnsville area in the late 1930s.
Her marriage to Homer Fletcher took place on March 22, 1947. Mr. Fletcher passed away in 1992.
For over 20 years, Mrs. Fletcher worked for the former Allegro Shoe Co. in St. Johnsville and Little Falls.
Mrs. Fletcher was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in St. Johnsville and a member of the St. Johnsville Senior Saints and Oppenheim Senior Citizens.
A loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Lucy expanded every effort towards providing them a good family life. mn,/ .She loved to cook and was known for her homemade spaghetti and sauce. Along with cooking Lucy enjoyed sewing. In her leisure she liked to play cards.
Survivirs include her daughter, Valerie Claus of St. Johnsville; a brother, Casmier Riscica of Albany; a sister, Josephine (Buffy) Colorito of St. Johnsville; four grandchildren, Haley Ferguson and husband Scott of Oppenheim, Tammy Claus of Oppenheim, Peter Claus and wife Kerry of Oppenheim, and Keith Smith of St. Johnsville; seven great-grandchildren, Brock and Mackenzie Ferguson, Brody, Troy and Conner Claus, and Brianna and Keith Smith; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Carmella Riscica of Albany.
She was predeceased by a brother, Phillip Riscica; and a sister, Dominica Perry.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at 10 a.m. from the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, with Sister Dolores Stevens, of St. Patrick's Church, officiating. There are no calling hours. Interment will take place in West St. Johnsville Cemetery in the spring.
Ruth Howard
DOLGEVILLE Mrs. Ruth Howard, 81, wife of Robert Howard, passed away Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Little Falls Hospital. She had resided at Valley Health Services for the past two and a half years. Ruth was born in Gloversville on Jan. 16, 1921, a daughter of the late Godfrey and Fannie (Bellinger) Palmer. She graduated from Dolgeville school in 1940. Her marriage to Robert Howard took place at St. Joseph's Parish House on Jan. 26, 1946, with Father Fitzgerald officiating. Survivors other than her husband of 56 years, Robert, are a daughter and her husband, Barbara and William Schuyler of Fort Plain; and a son and his wife, Richard and Delia Howard of Clifton Park; a sister, Jean Lichtneger of Closter, N.J.; and two sisters-in-law, Lois Howard of Dolgeville, and Marian Palmer of Little Falls; four grandchildren, Heather Schuyler of Waterford, Daryl Schuyler of Fort Plain, Christopher Howard of Beacon, and Jennifer Howard of Montgomery; along with several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. at the Roberts-Buck Funeral Home, 3 Faville Ave., Dolgeville, with the Rev. Burt H. Eckard
SOMERSET, Mass. Burt H. Eckard, 67, of Calvin Ave., Somerset, died Sunday at his home. He was the husband of Arlene M. (Travers) Eckard. Born in Cherry Valley, the son of the late Bert and Flora (Adams) Eckard, he lived in New York and Bourne, Mass., for many years and in Somerset since 1972. A 20-year member of the Air Force and a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars and the Cuban Crisis, he served in the Air Defense Command and Military Airlift Command, retiring in 1975. Besides his wife of 43 years, survivors include two daughters, Paula Ouellette of Fall River and Deborah Mendes of Assonet; a son, Richard Eckard of Fall River; a brother, Robert Eckard; and a sister; Geraldine Hill. He is also survived by five grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Following cremation, visitation will take place Wednesday, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., in the Auclair Funeral Home, 690 S. Main St., Fall River, Mass.
Olin Michael (Dogcatcher) Rumrill
ST. JOHNSVILLE Olin Michael (Dogcatcher) Rumrill, 60, of 5936 State Highway 29, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at Little Falls Hospital, with his beloved wife and family at his side. Olin was born on May 7, 1941, in Northville, a son of the late Raymond and Dorothy "Looman" Rumrill and received his education in Stratford schools. His marriage to the former Aleta Mae Johnson took place in Oppenheim on Oct. 21, 1967, with Max Lyons, justice of the peace, officiant. Survivors include his loving wife of 34 years, Aleta; five sons and their wives, Arthur and Colleen Rumrill of Johnstown, Robert and Karen Rumrill of Fort Plain, Richard and Eva Rumrill of Lassleville, Michael and Cindy Rumrill of Ephratah, and Brian and Tina Rumrill of Salisbury Center; two daughters, Anna Tennant and her friend Bill Doucet of Lawrence, Mass., and Gail Rumrill and her friend Harry Vogel III of Little Falls; one brother, Raymond Rumrill of Dolgeville; and a sister, Sue Rashbach of Frankfort; 19 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Roberts-Buck Funeral Home, 3 Faville Ave., Dolgeville, on Wednesday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. William Hayes of Lassleville, officiating. Carmela M. Groom
CAROGA LAKE Carmela M. Groom, age 75, of 112 Vrooman Road, Caroga Lake, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at St. Francis Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria, La.
She was born on June 7, 1926, in Little Falls, the daughter of the late Rocco and Angelina (Morra) Colangelo.
Carmela was a graduate of Little Falls Hospital.
She was united in marriage to Jerry Groom on Oct. 8, 1955, in Long Beach, Calif.
The couple had shared in a blessed union of 38 years until the death of Mr. Groom on Dec. 18, 1993.
In 1972, Mr. and Mrs. Groom started and owned (Hawaiian Boats, Inc.) which custom built over 14,000 high performance fiberglass ski boats until 1980, when they moved to Caroga Lake.
There, they owned and operated Groom's General Store from 1980-1992.
The store is still owned and operated by the family.
Outside of her working career, Carmela was a devoted mother and grandmother who cherished her family dearly.
Being the vivacious lady she was, Carmela kept herself an active and busy person for many years.
Two of her favorite hobbies were playing poker with her friends whenever she could and traveling which she truly enjoyed.
Surviving are her beloved children, Leslie H. Groom and wife Mary Ann Reddoch-Groom of Boyce, La., Jerry L. Groom, II and wife, Kimberly of Caroga Lake, and Kevin M. Groom and wife, Catherine Kendrick of Corvallis, Ore.; her cherished grandchildren, Callista, Jerry, Cameron, Keiko, Jerry, III, Patrick and Michael Groom; and in-laws, Raymond J. Groom, Patricia Groom and Leslie Groom.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Yolanda Caracane.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. from the Enea Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe St., Little Falls.
Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, town of Herkimer.
Friends and relatives may call at the Enea Funeral Home on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, from 5-7 p.m.
