Survived by: Mrs. Caccamo is survived by her children, David (Margaret) Caccamo of New Paltz, Dorothy (Larry) Humm of Brockport, NY, and Susan (Christopher) Anagnos of Manchester Center, VT.; grandchildren, Marisa Caccamo, Arren Caccamo, and Kayla Anagnos; and a sister, Charlotte Bathrick of Red Hook.
Born at: Mont Clair, NJ
History: Born in Mont Clair, NJ (because her mother`s brother who was a doctor lived and practiced there)and grew up on the holstein and apple farm her parents from Vermont had created in Red Hook on the Hudson River in upstate NY (actually Upper Red Hook). Her younger sisters, Charlotte and Caroline, joined her to make the house full of girlish joy. They walked to a one room school house initially, and then her mother learned to drive so she could take them to school the village of Red Hook. After college (Pratt Institute and then Buffalo State College), she returned to be the expanded central school district`s first art teacher. Upon marrying her only real love (that next year), she passed that position to her new husband, Tony, and became a full time homemaker and volunteer. After Tony returned from the war to his family of 3 (Mary and their first two children), they moved to the Wappingers Falls area. She taught Sunday School in the Fishkill Reformed Church. In 1951, they moved into the home that Tony built on two acres of hay field. Then Mary moved even more intensely into volunteering! The ladies of the Home Bureau brought their sewing machines and fill the living room and dining room with the humm of the machines and their conversation. She started the boy scout pack in Wappingers when her son, Dave, was ready for cub scouts (also was his Den Mother)(was later told she couldn`t do that because she was a woman), but it stood and continues today. When daughter, Dorothy, was ready for Brownies, she volunteered for that as well. This only mentions a few of those numerous early volunteer activities. When daughter, Sue, went to school, so did Mary; going back to teaching art in the public schools. It was amazing the creativity she was able to release from the children she taught. (And until she moved away a year ago, grown adults would come up to her in the grocery store and say "Are you Mrs. Caccamo? I thought so! I loved your art classes!") When she retired from teaching, she went back to volunteering full time: *for the American Cancer Society, driving cancer patients to their treatments in Albany and New York City (Wappingers is 2 hours away from both) *for Meals On Wheels delivering those so needed hot meals to shut-ins *and back to the choir at church and several other activities! After her beloved husband, Tony, died in 1980, she continued to help others and to keep up that "garden of eden" that Tony had created by tender care and diligence with trees, bushes, and gardens that bloom from the first snowdrop flower pushing it`s head through the snow, until the final frost in the fall. In the year 2000, Mary decided that it was time to move, so in June 2001, she moved to Rochester to the lovely independent living apartments called "The Village at Park Ridge" Although she had been disabled from a stroke just before she moved, she was able to remain iindependent with the help of the ancillary services that are included there; as well as the numerous friends she so quickly developed. She was able to enjoy gardens that others had planted and tended. People who met her there had the same response as people she had met throughout her life - they felt that they had known her forever and they recognized both her fierce independence and her loving response to people.
Accomplishments: Mary was a retired art teacher who taught at Wappingers, Glenham, and Red Hook.
