James King
July 9, 1999
James Edward "Ed" King, 82, of Ormond Beach, Fla., died Friday in Florida.
Born May 24, 1917, in Johnstown, he was the son of George and Emma Brown King. Mr. King was a standout athlete in both high school and college, captaining the undefeated Johnstown High School football team in 1934 and lettering in both football and track at Middlebury College. He graduated from Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vt., in 1939.
Mr. King was a teacher in the Fonda school district and later was a teacher, coach and guidance counselor at Fort Plain High School. He retired in 1977 as a guidance counselor in the Richfield Springs School District.
Mr. King was active in community affairs, serving as a village trustee in Fort Plain; a coach for Small Fry Baseball; a trustee of the Fort Plain Methodist Church; working with Cub Scouts; being a member of the Fort Plain Scholarship Association; and being involved with other numerous committees.
He was raised to master Mason in Fort Plain Lodge 433, F& AM, in April 1949 and served as master of the lodge until 1957, its centennial year. He recently received his 50-year pin.
Mr. King and his wife Mary, moved to Ormond Beach, Fla., in 1977. He was an active member of the Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church, serving as an usher and teller for many years.
In addition to his wife, the former Mary White, survivors include two sons, Robert King of Watkins Glen, and William King of South Lake Tahoe, Calif.; a daughter, JoAnne Marcellus of Johnstown; a brother, Richard King of Loudonville; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Jane Elizabeth King.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date in New York state.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church Music Program, 105 Amsden Road, Ormond Beach, Fla. 32176; or the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements are by Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain.

Joseph Watrobski
July 12, 1999
Joseph J. Watrobski, 86, of the Town of Perth died Monday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.
Born in Hagaman June 1, 1913, he was the son of John and Josephine Regelski Watrobski. He was a lifelong area resident.
He was an electrician for American Locomotive Products in Schenectady until retiring. Later, he was a self-employed electrician.
Mr. Watrobski was a life member of Perth Volunteer Fire Department and a member of St. Stephen's Church in Hagaman.
Mr. Watrobski married Mary Blacha May 29, 1937. She died in 1987.
Survivors include a son, Robert J. Watrobski of Amsterdam; a daughter, Janet Charles of Rochester; three brothers, Philip and Frank Watrobski, both of Hagaman, and Lewis Watrobski of Providence; a sister, Virginia Cetnar of Chandler, Ariz.; four grandchildren; three great-grandsons.
The funeral is 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel, 13 Belmont Place, following at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen's Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
Calling hours are 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps or Perth Volunteer Fire Department.

Mabel Hio
June 29, 1999
Mable Boulton Hio, 97, of Tuolumne, Calif., formerly of Schenectady, died June 29 in Tuolumne after a brief illness.
Born June 4, 1902, in England, Mrs. Hio was a graduate of Potsdam Normal School and later earned a master's degree from the State University of New York at Albany.
For 15 years, she lived in Schenectady before moving to California in 1998. Prior to that, she lived in the Johnstown-Gloversville area.
In the early 1920s, Mrs. Hio taught in Johnstown public schools. For 30 years, she taught in Estee Junior High School, where she headed the social studies department before retiring in 1975.
She was a member of Christ Church Episcopal in Schenectady and a member of its St. Faith's Guild.
Survivors include two sons, the Rev. William Hio of Scotia and Robert B. Hio of Tuolumne, Calif.; a sister, Ethel Ives of Saratoga Springs; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial Eucharist will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Church Episcopal, 970 State St., with the Rt. Rev. David W. Herzog, Episcopal Bishop of Albany, officiating.
Burial will be in Park View Cemetery.
There are no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
Arrangements are by Light's Funeral Home.

Lydia Carter
July 9, 1999
Lydia Carter, 85, of Spring Street, St. Johnsville, died Friday at Bassett Health Care in Cooperstown.
Born Feb. 16, 1914, in St. Johnsville, she was the daughter of Wallace and Maude Roller Rider. She was a graduate of St. Johnsville High School and was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Carter was employed by the St. Johnsville School District as a crossing guard until her retirement in 1981.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Church, its Altar Rosary Society, and a member of the St. Johnsville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
She married Henry B. Carter Aug. 24, 1934. He died Feb. 16, 1991.
Survivors include two sons, Jacque Carter of Fort Plain and Jan Carter of St Johnsville; two brothers, Carlton Rider and Joseph Rider, both of St. Johnsville; a sister, Jeannette Bundyk of St. Johnsville; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service is scheduled at 10 a.m. Friday, July 23, at St. Johns-ville Cemetery with Sister Dolores Stevens of St. Patrick's Church officiating.
Cremation is under the direction of the Smith Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville.
There are no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Johnsville Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

The Rev. James Rhodes
July 15, 1999
The Rev. James R. Rhodes of Ballston Spa died Thursday at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany, after a short illness.
Born Dec. 29, 1922, in Pulaski, he was the son of Clifford and Hellianne Straite. He spent his early years in Dannemora and was a graduate of Green Mountain Junior College, Syracuse University, and Boston University.
The Rev. Rhodes served in nine different pastorates - including Amsterdam - in a ministry that spanned more than 40 years.
A published poet, his three volumes of poetry will be followed by a posthumous volume scheduled for publication.
He served for many years as a board member and as president of the board for the Gateway Home for Children in Buffalo.
The Rev. Rhodes married Elizabeth Cornthwaite. She died in 1993.
He married Olive M. Kneisel in 1994.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Catharine Wheat, Barbara Reeves, and Betsy Norton; a son, Schuyler Rhodes; a sister, Kay Wyman; a brother, Donald Rhodes; and 10 grandchildren.
A memorial service was conducted Sunday at the Ballston Spa United Methodist Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Troy Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, Box 560, Saratoga Springs 12866; payable to the James R. Rhodes Camper's Scholarship Fund.
Arrangements were by the Hans Funeral home, 1088 Western Ave., Albany.

Elsbeth Abele
July 19, 1999
Elsbeth MetaDoerre Abele, 85, of Division Street, Gloversville, died Monday at her daughter's summer home in Richfield Springs.
Born Sept. 15, 1913, in Halberstradt, Germany, she was the daughter of Otto A. and Mathilde Prall Doerre. She was educated in Gloversville and lived here more than 75 years.
She owned and operated Federal Bakery on Main Street, Gloversville, later working for St. Thomas Leather Co. for more than 13 years, retiring in 1980.
Mrs. Abele was a member of St. James Lutheran Church for more than 70 years.
She was a member of the Concordia Singing Society.
Mrs. Abele was predeceased by her husband, Robert W. Abele Sr., in 1967.
Survivors include a son, Robert W Abele Jr. of Berlin, Md.; two daughters, Janet I. Underwood of Silver Springs, Md., and Eileen M. Burda of Hudson, Ohio; a sister, Irmgard Glynn of Lakewood, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Friday at St. James Lutheran Church, Gloversville.
Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
A calling hour will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. James Lutheran Church, 521 N. Main St., Gloversville 12078; or the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 N. Main St., Oneonta 13820-2034.
Arrangements are by the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville.

Mildred Wien
July 15, 1999
Mildred V. Wien, 90, of Rolla, Mo., died Thursday at the Missouri Presbyterian Manor where she lived since 1990.
Born June 25, 1909, in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Bertha and Clarence Visscher.
She was a graduate of Oneonta Normal School.
She taught in a one-room country school in the Amsterdam area, before her employment with Mohawk Carpet Mills.
She married Kurt W. Wien in 1958 and lived in Amsterdam before moving to Hardin, Mont., where her husband was transferred by Mohasco Industries.
Survivors include two sons, Robb Stewart of Dallas and the Rev. Hugh V. Stewart of Rolla, Mo.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be scheduled at the convenience of the family at First Presbyterian Church in Rolla, Mo.
Interment of her cremains will be in Custer Battlefield National Cemetery, Mont.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Rolla Presbyterian Manor Good Samaritan Fund, or to the Second Presbyterian Church, Amsterdam.

James King
July 9, 1999
A memorial service is scheduled at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 1 at the Houghtaling and Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, for James Edward "Ed" King, who died in Florida.
Calling hours are 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 1 at the funeral home prior to the service.

Thelma Schutter
July 18, 1999
Thelma R. Schutter, 80, of Lafayette Street, Palatine Bridge, died Sunday at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, after a short illness.
Born April 19, 1919 in Sprakers, she was the daughter of Charles and Mary Siets Russ. She was educated at the former country school in Sprakers and was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Schutter was a machine operator in the gum department at Beech-Nut Nutrition Corp., Canajoharie, retiring after 42 years of service.
She was a member of the Ames-Sprout Brook United Methodist Church; a member of the 25-year club at Beech-Nut; a member of the Women's League at the church; and an annual participant in the fund-raising at the church.
She married Bernard W. Schutter March 9, 1940. He died Sept. 3, 1970.
Survivors include two daughters, Nadine Schwalm of Fort Plain and Maureen Hanchett of Randall; a sister, Marion Smith of Gloversville; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, with the Rev. Jane Hubschmitt, pastor of Randall Christian Church, officiating.
Burial will be in Ames Cemetery.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
