Paul Novak
April 10, 2000
Paul C. Novak, 57, of County Route 110, Broadalbin, died Monday afternoon at home following a brief illness.
He was born Oct. 4, 1942, in Niskayuna, the son of Chester and Genevieve Palkovic Novak. He was a 1961 graduate of Mont Pleasant High School in Schenectady.
He was a meat cutter for several are markets including the Grand Union in Northville, and the former Save-Way and A&P Markets in Gloversville. He later operated the former Frosty Farmer on Route 147 in Galway. He was the owner of the former Novak's Country Meat on Route 67. He also owned Novak's Bait and Tackle, formerly in Broadalbin. At one time, he was employed at Pallette's Stone Quarry in Saratoga. Most recently, he was a machine operator at Ellsworth Ice Cream in Saratoga, retiring in 1996 due to illness.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1961-1965; for three of those years he was stationed in France.
He married Elaine Gibson Oct. 22, 1966.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include his parents, of Schenectady; a son, Daren Novak of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Soni L. Finch of Greenfield Center and Darci H. Novak of San Antonio, Texas; a brother, Robert J. Novak of Schenectady; two granddaughters; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Cremation will be at the Parkview Crematorium, Schenectady.
A memorial service is scheduled at 10 a.m. Friday at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 38 W. Main St., Broadalbin, with the Rev. Timothy Mangan officiating.
Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main St., Gloversville 12078.

Beatrice Gorman
April 10, 2000
Beatrice Gorman, 89, formerly a resident of Park Hill Adult Home, Amsterdam, died Monday afternoon at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.
She was born Oct. 10, 1910, in Galway, the daughter of John and Pearl Zemlock Rygielski. She attended school in Galway and was a resident of Galway until moving to Amsterdam in 1932.
She was employed by Sanford Carpet Mills and later by Mohawk Carpet Mills, both in Amsterdam.
She was a member of the former St. Joseph's Church in Amsterdam.
Mrs. Gorman was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Amsterdam.
She married Joseph Gorman Dec. 29, 1932. He died Dec. 29, 1984.
Survivors include a son, Joseph M. Gorman of Norwalk, Conn.; two sisters, Sophie Risch of Amsterdam and Louise Kwapinski of Schenectady; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
A private memorial service will be scheduled at the convenience of the family.
Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam.
There are no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Alice Paul
April 9, 2000
Alice Paul, 80, of Lyons, N.J., died Sunday at Lyons VA Medical Center in Lyons, N.J.
She was born July 5, 1919, in Minerva, the daughter of Daniel and Katherine Tanchek Boltash. She lived in Broadalbin before moving to Lyons, N.J., seven years ago.
She was a customer service representative for M.C.A. record company in Gloversville for 29 years.
She was an Army veteran of World War II.
Her husband, James E. Halloran, died in 1962.
Survivors include her husband, John J. Paul Jr.; a daughter, Alexandria Zander of Newton, N.J.; a sister, Rose Benedict of Broadalbin; three grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass is scheduled at 3:30 p.m. today at the Lyons VA Medical Center, Lyons, N.J.
Interment will be Wednesday at the Brigadier Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown, N.J.
Memorial contributions may be made to the James A. Brennan Memorial Humane Society, 437 Nine Mile Tree Road, Gloversville 12078.
Arrangements are by the William J. Leber Funeral Home, Chester, N.J.

Maryanne Barker
April 9, 2000
Maryanne Barker, 55, of Gloversville, died Sunday at Nathan Littauer Hospital after a long illness.
She was born in Brooklyn and attended school in Mayfield.
She worked at the Fulton County Cooperative Extension, retiring in 1983 due to illness.
Survivors include three sons, Tim Barker of Gloversville, and Shawn Barker and Eric Barker, both of Fort Meyers, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy Freestone of Chicago; a brother, Thomas Abel of Arkansas; and two grandchildren.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home, 215 E. Main St., Johnstown.
Cremation will take place at Vale Crematory.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mary Jane Christiano
April 9, 2000
Mary Jane D. Christiano, 51, of Hightower Way, Webster, died Sunday at Rochester General Hospital after a long illness.
She was born March 3, 1949, in Amsterdam, the daughter of John and Helen Dobies Raczynski. She was a 1967 graduate of Amsterdam High School. She attended Fulton-Montgomery Community College and was a 1971 graduate of the State University of New York at Brockport.
After graduation, Mrs. Christiano moved to Webster.
She was a teacher in the Webster Central School District.
Mrs. Christiano was a member of St. Rita's Church in Webster.
She married Frank Christiano Nov. 28, 1970.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include her parents, of Amsterdam; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
The funeral is 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel, 13 Belmont Place, Amsterdam, followed at 9 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stanislaus Church.
Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Profetta Funeral Chapel, 1650 Empire Blvd., Webster, and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Elbert Wert
April 9, 2000
Elbert L. Wert, 93, formerly of 73 Saratoga Blvd., Gloversville, died Sunday at the state Volunteer Fireman's Home in Hudson, Columbia County, where he resided since last Tuesday. He previously lived at the Palatine Nursing Home for two years.
He was born Aug. 6, 1906, in Gloversville, the son of Elmer E. and Anna C. Beach Wert. He attended Gloversville schools and lived in Gloversville until 1977.
He was a printer at local papers for 55 years, starting as a paper boy in 1918 for The Leader-Republican. He retired in 1973 from The Leader-Herald.
He was a member of the Circus Fans Association and served as state chairman for many years, and later as director of District 3. He was a member of the Circus Historical Society; Circus Model Builders International; Felix Morales Tent of Circus Fans of the Capital District; John Herriott Tent of Poughkeepsie-Newburgh area; and Circus Fans of Australia.
He was a member of the board of trustees of the Caroga Lake Evangelical Chapel, former member of the board of directors of the Ida McGuinness Senior Center, director of the board of the former Fulton County Tuberculosis and Health Association, a member of the Friends of the Gloversville Free Library, and the Fulton County Historical Society.
He was a 72-year member of Gloversville Lodge 429, Free and Accepted Masons; served as master of the lodge in 1935; and received his 70-year membership pin in 1997.
He was a 71-year member of the Johnstown Chapter, Royal Arch Masons; served as high priest in 1934; and was past grand representative of the state of California Grand Chapter to the Grand Chapter of the State of New York Royal Arch Masons.
He was a 51-year member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Schenectady 32nd Degree, and the Ful-Mont Scottish Rite Club of the area.
He was a 68-year member of Cayadutta Chapter 166, Order of the Eastern Star; served as patron from 1932 to 1934; and as district grand lecturer of the Fulton-Hamilton-Herkimer-Montgomery OES District in 1976; was a member of the Present and Past Grand Officers Association; and district past matrons and patrons association..
He was a member of the Fort Hunter Canal Association.
He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church of Gloversville.
He was a charter member of the Berkshire Volunteer Fire Department; served as its first president and was made an honorary member in 1976..
He married Sarah Vedder Sept. 12, 1931. She died March 28, 1980.
Survivors include a daughter, Priscilla A. Johnson of Poughkeepsie; two grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral is 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville.
Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
Calling hours are 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The Eastern Star and Masons will conduct services at 6:30 and 7 p.m., respectively.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Gloversville Free Library, 58 E. Fulton St., or Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main St., both of Gloversville 12078, or to a charity of one's choice.

Viola Vogelien
April 11, 2000
Viola E. Vogelien, 81, formerly of Hammerstone Village Apartments, Cobleskill, died Tuesday at Bassett Healthcare Facility in Cooperstown.
She was born in Tribes Hill and lived in Cobleskill for 20 years. She lived in Middleburgh for a short time before entering the Robinson Terrace Nursing Facility in Stamford in 1997.
Mrs. Vogelien was a volunteer at the hospital in Cobleskill.
She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard Vogelien, in 1981.
Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Hayes of Middleburgh and Dale Vogelien of Atlanta; a sister, Virginia Friers of Glens Falls; and two grandchildren.
The funeral is 6 p.m. Friday at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill.
Burial will be in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.
A calling hour will precede the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Middleburgh Emergency Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Middleburgh 12122.

William Orth

William J. "Bud" Orth, of Hollywood Road, Amsterdam, died Wednesday evening at home.
Arrangements by the Riley Mortuary Inc., Amsterdam, are incomplete and will be announced.

Edward Kaufman
April 12, 2000
Edward Kaufman, 55, of Union Street, Amsterdam, died suddenly Wednesday at home.
He was born Jan. 16, 1945, in Amsterdam, the son of Stephen and Caroline Dryzal Kaufman. He attended local schools.
Mr. Kaufman was employed by the General Electric Co. in Schenectady for many years, retiring due to disability.
He was a communicant of St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church.
Survivors include his mother, Caroline Dryzal Kaufman of Amsterdam; and several cousins.
The funeral is 8:15 a.m. Saturday at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed at 9 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stanislaus Church.
Interment is in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Stanislaus School.
