Orville Dean
April 12, 2000
Orville C. Dean, 85, of New Turnpike Road, Fort Plain, died Wednesday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam after a long illness.
He was born March 20, 1915 in Gloversville, the son of Marion and Anna Wilder Dean. He was educated in Johnstown.
Mr. Dean was employed at Life Savers in Canajoharie for 20 years as a cook in the gum base department. He retired in 1975.
He was a resident of Fulton and Montgomery counties for 53 years, also living in the Oneonta area.
He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre.
He was formerly a member of Fort Plain Baptist Church and currently a member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Ames. He served as trustee of Fort Plain Baptist Church.
He married Muriel Cramer Jones Dec. 17, 1948.
He was predeceased by a step-daughter, Linda K. Jones, in 1961.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Orville C. Dean Jr. of Walden, Jonathan Dean of Davenport, and Michael P. Dean of Canajoharie; a step-son, Richard D. Jones Sr. of Fort Plain; a brother, Elvin Dean of Palatine Bridge; a half-brother, Marion Dean Jr. of Gloversville; a sister, Marion Jones of Titusville, Fla.; a half-sister, Edith Waterman of Amsterdam; 23 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral is 2 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home Inc., 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, with the Rev. Richard Button, Cornerstone Baptist Church, officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Fonda.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Fort Plain VFW Post 3275 Memorial Squad will conduct full military honors at graveside.

Alice Young
April 17, 2000
Alice B. Young, 86, of Midline Road, Amsterdam, died Monday afternoon at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady.
She was born April 25, 1913, in New City, the daughter of Irving and Emma Brooks Blauvelt. She was educated in Spring Valley.
Mrs. Young was a bookkeeper for the former Crane & Nevins of Amsterdam and also the Amsterdam Flying School.
A homemaker, she was an active member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Amsterdam, serving as its treasurer since 1962.
She married Kenneth E. Young Sept. 29, 1940.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three sisters, Mary McKee of Pomona, Blanche Buscicchi of New City, and Elsie Albright of Oneonta; two nieces; and several cousins.
The funeral is noon Friday at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, with Gary Fowler, lay minister of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, officiating.
Interment will be in Mahwab Cemetery of the Ramapo Reformed Church, Mahwab.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Eleanor Shultis
April 10, 2000
Eleanor Louise Davidson Shultis, 71, of Sun City, Ariz., died April 10 after a long illness.
She was born July 1, 1928, in Franklin, the daughter of Clifford and Clara Davidson. She graduated from Abraham L. Kellogg High School in Treadwell.
She was employed by the New York Telephone Co. in Oneonta.
She married Hanford John Shultis Aug. 14, 1948. The couple operated a dairy farm in Denver for 20 years. In 1968 they moved to Cobleskill and eventually to Fonda.
In 1990, Mrs. Shultis retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Albany after 13 years. Since retirement she lived in Sun City, Ariz.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two brothers, Douglas Davidson of Franklin and Kenneth Reed Davidson of Sidney; a sister, Dorothy Cartwright of Reading, Pa.; a son, Edward James Shultis of Roxbury; four daughters, Susan Jean Dziedzic of Phoenix, Ariz., Linda Ann Hoffmann of Middleburgh, Patricia Kathleen Mickle of Sun City, Ariz., and Amy Beth Sanford of Johnstown; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for mid-August in New York.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley, West Office, 9720, W. Peoria Ave. Suite 128, Peoria, Ariz. 85345; or to the Fonda-Fultonville Methodist Church.

Helena Glenar
April 18, 2000
Helena M. Glenar, 85, of Arkell Hall, Canajoharie, died Tuesday morning at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
She was born Dec. 13, 1914, in Columbus, Pa., the daughter of Frederick and Helena Kiechle Miller. She moved to New York state as a young child and lived in Hudson and Canajoharie most of her life.
Mrs. Glenar was a 1932 graduate of Dolgeville High School and a 1936 graduate of Hartwick College.
She was a homemaker.
She was a former member and past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Tekaharawa Chapter 488, Canajoharie, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Otsquago Chapter 297, Fort Plain, and was the Canajoharie village historian from 1987 until 1997.
She was a member of St. John's and St. Mark's Lutheran Church and a member of Welca of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.
Survivors include a son, David A. Glenar of Potomac, Md.; a daughter, Penny Glenar of Brooklyn; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral is 2 p.m. Friday at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie, with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating.
Burial will be in Canajoharie Falls Cemetery.
Calling hours are noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

William Richards
April 16, 2000
William H. Richards, 76, of 6930 State Route 5S, Fort Plain, died Sunday at the Folts Home in Herkimer.
He was born Oct. 5, 1923, in Cherry Valley, the son of Herman L. and Loraine Settle Richards. He was a 1942 graduate of Fort Plain High School and a 1948 graduate of Cobleskill College.
Mr. Richards was a lifelong area resident.
He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving from 1945 to 1946. He received the American Theatre Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal and the Victory Medal.
Mr. Richards was a chief lock operator on the New York State Barge Canal at Lock 15 in Fort Plain. Prior to that he worked for Burgess Fuel and the former Schelp and Warner in St. Johnsville, as well as various plumbing and refrigeration contractors.
He was a member of United Methodist Church of Fort Plain and also its couples club.
He married Ada Marie Hoke July 25, 1953.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Dale William Richard of Rome; two grandsons; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Cremation will take place under the direction of Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville.
Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at St. Johnsville Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Folts Home, United Methodist Church of Fort Plain, or to a charity of one's choice.

Florence Sweeney
April 16, 2000
Florence "Betty" Sweeney, 83, of Melbourne Beach, Fla., died Sunday at home.
She was born in Hagaman and moved to Brevard County, Florida, from Scotia in 1976.
She worked for the New York Board of Education as a teacher and nurse.
Survivors include her sister, Catherine Schuyler of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; and a nephew.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Church.
There are no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to Space Coast Interfaith Coalition, 4676 N. Wickham Road, Melbourne, Fla. 32935.
Arrangements are by the Beach Funeral Home, Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.

Eva Lamont
April 18, 2000
Eva A. Lamont, 87, of 6 Lincoln St., Gloversville, died Tuesday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam after a long illness.
She was born Jan. 19, 1913, in Northhampton, the daughter of Walter and Robertena Brooks Wait. She was educated at Bunker Hill School and was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Lamont was a glovemaker for Rubin Gloves.
She was a communicant of Gloversville Wesleyan Church.
She was predeceased by her first husband, John W. Sanborn in 1963, her second husband, Fred Lamont, a son, John Sanborn Jr., and two daughters, Kathryn Cheney and Mary L. Constantine.
Survivors include two daughters, Jean Buseck and Julia Wagner, both of Gloversville; a sister, Lillian Rivenburg of Amsterdam; 16 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a cousin.
The funeral is 10 a.m. Friday at Gloversville Wesleyan Church, 68 Grand St., Gloversville, with the Rev. Patrick D. Veltri officiating.
Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery of Northville in Northville.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville.

Nancy Javarone
April 17, 2000
Nancy Javarone, 71, of Third Avenue, Gloversville, died Monday at home after being stricken.
She was born in Schenectady.
Mrs. Javarone worked in Gloversville at the former Papa & Sons Glove Shop and for many years for the Grandoe Co., retiring in 1992.
She was a member of the Union of Needle Trades Industries and Textile Employees of the AFL-CIO.
Mrs. Javarone was a communicant of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church.
She married Gaetano "Chuck" Javarone May 14, 1950.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Guy Javarone of Watertown; a daughter, Phyllis Santangelo of Johnstown; a sister, Anna Tessitore of Schenectady; and four grandchildren.
The funeral is 9 a.m. Thursday at the Amico Funeral Home, 150 S. Main St., followed at 9:30 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church.
Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church building fund.

Esther Van Denpoel
April 18, 2000
Esther S. Van Denpoel, 86, of Johnstown, died Tuesday at Wells Nursing Home, Johnstown, following a long illness.
She was born Dec. 19, 1913, in Johnstown, the daughter of Albert and Nettie O. Robinson Van Denpoel. She was a 1931 graduate of Johnstown High School and attended Gloversville Business School. She was a lifelong area resident.
Miss Van Denpoel was a life member of Christ Lutheran Church in Johnstown, former member of Wells House Auxiliary, Johnstown Historical Society, and Upstaters bowling league.
She was employed at the former J.J. Newberry Store and the former Superb Glove Co., both of Johnstown, and retired in 1978 from GTE.
Survivors include several cousins.
The funeral is noon Thursday at Christ Lutheran Church, 1 W. Mont-gomery St., Johnstown, with the Rev. Wayne D. Moritz officiating.
Burial will be in Fern Dale Cemetery, Johnstown.
A calling hour will precede the service at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Lutheran Church.
Arrangements are by the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 E. Main St., Johnstown.

A graveside committal service with military honors for Thomas J. Ford Sr. will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Maple Avenue Cemetery, Fultonville. Arrangements are by the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.
