Doris M. Leo
July 3, 2001
Doris M. Leo, 78, a former resident of Wall Street, Amsterdam, died Tuesday evening at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, after a short illness.
She was born July 30, 1922 in Gloversville and was a lifelong area resident, moving to Amsterdam five years ago. She was a graduate of Gloversville High School.
Mrs. Leo was employed as a nurses aide at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, and was last employed at MCA of Gloversville as a quality controller, retiring in 1987.
Mrs. Leo was a communicant of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church of Gloversville and its Catholic Daughters. She was a former member of Johnstown Moose Auxiliary and the Gloversville 55+ Senior Citizens.
She was married to Anthony S. Leo Sr. He died August 21, 1991. She was also predeceased by her parents, Harry W. and Emma Morgan Hayes, a brother, Richard Hayes, and two sisters, Nora Fonda and Frances Borntrager.
She is survived by five sons, Ronnie A. Leo of Gloversville, Salvatore E. Leo of Johnstown, Richard T. Leo and Carl F. Leo of Amsterdam and Anthony S. Leo Jr. of Gloversville; two daughters, Janice M. Blodgett of Gloversville and Christine C. Leo of Johnstown; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the John W. Finocan Funeral Home Inc., 13 Prospect Ave., Gloversville. A prayer service will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, Gloversville, with the Rev. Donald Czelusniak, pastor, as celebrant. Interment will take place at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.

Barbara Ann Szczepanik
July 4, 2001
Barbara Ann Wooster Szczepanik, 48, of Millers Corners Road, Amsterdam, died Wednesday evening at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after being stricken at home after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born October 29, 1952 in Amsterdam, the daughter of Richard and Dorothy LaBarron Wooster. She was a lifelong area resident and attended Amsterdam schools.
Barbara worked on and was the owner and operator with her husband of their family farm on Millers Corners Road in Amsterdam. Shea also worked for a short time at Rite Aid Pharmacy in Amsterdam.
Survivors include her loving husband, Robert Szczepanik whom she married November 13, 1971; three dear sons and their wives, Robert and Nancy Szczepanik Jr. of Amsterdam, Steven and Holly Szczepanik of Amsterdam, and Timothy and Jacquelyn Szczepanik of Delanson; two brothers, Richard Wooster of Amsterdam and Harold Wooster of Johnstown; six sisters, Carol Daye of Charlotte, N.C., Linda Woods of Twin City, GA, Sandra Lorensen of Fort Johnson, Carla Frazier of Schenectady, Theresa Brooker of Johnstown and Mary Wooster of Schenectady; her beloved grandson, Christopher Michael Szczepanik and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam. Burial will take place in Chuctanunda Cemetery, Minaville. The family will receive relatives and friends Friday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Town of Florida Volunteer Fire Department or the American Cancer Society.

Leta E. Gallt
July 3, 2001
Leta E. Gallt, 78, of St. Johnsville Nursing Home, formerly of 1347 River Road, Fort Plain, passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2001 at the nursing home with her loving family by her side.
She was born October 24, 1922 in Salisbury Center, the daughter of the late Burt and Freda (Perkins) Johnson. Leta was educated in Salisbury schools and lived in the St. Johnsville area for over 50 years.
Her marriage to Charles Gallt took place in October of 1938 at the Methodist Church parsonage in Dolgeville. The couple shared a blessed union of marriage for 40 years until the passing of Mr. Gallt in December of 1978.
As a proud woman committed to her family and her home, Leta's happiness and well-being were centered around her loving children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Since being a resident at the nursing home, Leta enjoyed and treasured the time spent visiting with the nursing home staff and her friends.
Survivors include three sons, Charles Gallt and wife, Alice, of Lasselsville, Barry Gallt of Fort Plain and Wayne Gallt and wife, Sue, of Oppenheim; four daughters, Gail Polidori and husband, Joseph, of St. Johnsville, Caroline Hulbert and husband, Lawrence, of Fort Plain, Joan Nagele and husband, Fred, of Fort Plain and Janet Mureness of St. Johnsville; 26 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, cousins and sisters-in-law.
She was predeceased by a son, Lester Gallt, and eight brothers, Robert, Arnold, Bernard, Roy, Gerald, William, Calvin and Clifford Johnson.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 6, 2001 at 11 a.m. from the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, with the Rev.. R. W. Williams, pastor of Mt. Valley Hospice, officiating. Interment will take place in Freysbush Cemetery, Freysbush. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home Thursday, July 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to S.A.V.A.C. or to Mt. Valley Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Genevieve R. Sargalis
July 10, 2001
Genevieve R. Sargalis, formerly of Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, was born in Amsterdam the daughter of the late Peter and Filimena Sargalis.
She was employed for many years by the Greater Amsterdam School District as a school nurse and was also a dental hygienist.
Miss Sargalis was a communicant of St. Casimir's Church, Amsterdam, and was a member of St. Mary's Church Choir and St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary, also of Amsterdam.
Surviving are two sisters, MaryAnn Hartley and Isabelle Hayes; several nieces and nephews.
Miss Sargalis was predeceased by her brother, Peter J. Sargalis, and a sister, Ida Boice.
The funeral will be held Friday morning at 8:45 o'clock at the Riley Mortuary, Inc., 110 Division St., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at 9:30 o'clock at St. Casimir's Church, 260 East Main St., Amsterdam.
Interment will be at St. Casimir's Cemetery, Amsterdam.
Calling hours are Thursday evening from 6 to 8 at the mortuary.
Memorial gifts in Miss Sargalis' name may be made to St. Casimir's Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Janet A. Cole
June 30, 2001
Janet A. Cole, 92, a former resident of Mayfield, died June 30, 2001 at the home of her daughter in Elberton, Georgia, following a brief illness.
Born November 21, 1908 in Groningen, Holland, she was the daughter of Aan and Barbara Andringa.
Mrs. Cole graduated from Amsterdam High School in 1927 and was employed in the glove industry until her retirement in 1970. After retiring, she enjoyed sewing, needlwork and gardening. She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Amsterdam.
She married Allan D. Cole in 1928 and they celebrated 67 years of marriage. He died in January, 1995. She was also predeceased by five brothers and one sister.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara A. Coloney of Elberton, GA; a son, William L. Cole of Mayfield; and seven grandchildren, Lynne Ruggiero of Fort Johnson, Bobbi Harrington of Mayfield, Richard and Patrick Coloney of Alpharetta, GA; Wayne Cole of Fonda; Eric Cole of Buskirk and Christopher Cole of Caroga Lake. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren.
Burial will take place in Mayfield Cemetery. A graveside service will be held at a date to be announced.
Memorial contributions may be made to VistaCare, 1640 Prince Ave., Athens, GA 30306.

Carol A. Collette Johns
July 4, 2001
Carol A. Collette Johns, 62, of Seminole, Florida, died July 4, 2001 at home under Hospice care.
She was born in Amsterdam, the daughter of Alfred and Agnes Horton Collette and moved to Florida 42 years ago.
She was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her husband, Harold; her brother, Brian Collette of Tampa, Florida; her step-mother, Frieda Lloyd of Largo, Florida; her uncle, Harold Horton; and several cousins of Amsterdam, Galway and Heuvelton, N.Y.
She was at the Abbey Affordable Cremation Center of Largo, Florida.
Funeral arrangements and burial were at the Veterans Cemetery in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Donations may be made to Hospice, 300 East Bay Drive, Largo, Florida, 33770.

Anthony Licardo
July 9, 2001
Anthony Licardo, 92, of Kimball Street, Amsterdam, died Monday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after being stricken.
He was born June 9, 1909 in Amsterdam, the son of Eugene and Amelia DePasquale Licardo. He was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools.
Mr. Licardo was employed at Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut until going to work for General Electric in Schenectady until his retirement.
He was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam.
His wife, Iva Crandall Licardo, died May 30, 1990.
Survivors include a son, Anthony Licardo, Jr. of Maine; a daughter, Mary Licardo of Hastings, FL; a brother, Rudolph Licardo of Hagaman; five sisters, Amelia Sinatra of Amsterdam, Celia Abissi of Enfield, CT, Helen Salatino and Catherine Licardo, both of Hagaman, and Annie Sgroi of Reading, MA; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchidlren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 8:15 at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Grove Street, Amsterdam.
The burial will take place in St. Michael's Cemetery, Amsterdam. The family will receive relatives and friends Thursday from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to GAVAC, in care of the funeral home.

Irene M. Galusha
July 9, 2001
Irene M. Kowalski Galusha, 86, formerly of the High Rise Apartments and Hill Crest Springs, died Monday evening at Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility in Gloversville.
Born in Amsterdam April 11, 1915, a daughter of Walter and Carrie Kowalski, she was a graduate of St. Stanislaus School and was employed as a sewing machine operator for Montco, Hanover and Willow Glen factories until she retired in 1984.
She was a communicant of St. Stanislaus and St. Mary's Roman Catholic churches, both in Amsterdam, and was a member of the Lions Club Auxiliary.
Irene was preceded in death by a daughter, Dolores Galusha Phelan, in 1974 and her sisters, Gertrude and Jane Kowalski, Anna Checca and Helen Kartner.
She is survived by her beloved daughter, Linda G. and her husband, Anthony, Pasquarelli of Charlotte, N.C.; her dear sisters, Regina Pawlak of Annandale, VA, and Dorothy Taber of Warrensburg; her loving grandchildren ,Kelley Phalen Baldwin, Christina and Carrie Pasquarelli and nieces and nephews.
Services are Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Mary's Church. Interment is in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association or the American Cancer Society.

Walter Pifko
July 10, 2001
Walter Pifko, 79, a resident of the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility, died there Tuesday morning following a brief illness.
He was born in New York City December 6, 1921, a son of Michael and Anna Pifko and was educated there. He was a 1956 graduate of City College of new York. Mr. Pifko resided in Union, N.J. since 1974 and moved to Amsterdam last year.
Mr. Pifko was employed as a sanitary engineer for the New York City Board of Education for more than 40 years. He retired in 1991.
Mr. Pifko was a World War II Army veteran and served in the European Theatre.
He was of the Catholic faith.
His survivors include a sister, Olga Sigl of Union, N.J., and a brother, George Pifko Sr. of Broadalbin; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 38 West Main St., Broadalbin, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 2 North St., with the Rev. Anthony Gulley officiating. Interment will take place at St. Basil's Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Joseph's Church or to the Broadalbin Volunteer Ambulance Corps, both in care of the funeral home.

Virginia S. Friers

Virginia S. Friers, 79, of Queensbury, passed away Monday, July 9, 2001 at Glens Falls Hospital.
Mrs. Friers was born August 28, 1921 in Amsterdam, the daughter of Theodore G. and Evelyn (Yell) Stinson.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Annunciation Church in Queensbury.
Mrs. Friers was employed at the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance and Continental Insurance Co.
She enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting and spending time with her grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest J. Friers Jr. who died November 14, 1982 and two sisters, Helen Elmy and Viola Vogelin, and one brother, Theodore G. Stinson Jr.
Survivors include six sons, Ernst T. and his wife, Filomena, Friers of Schenectady, Thomas R. and his wife, Mary, of Melbourne, Florida, David and his wife, Wendy, Friers of Queensbury; Joseph W. and his wife, Pamela, Friers of South Glens Falls, Joel C. and his wife, Carol ,Friers of of Queensbury, Michael and his wife, Carolyn, Friers of Queensbury; 12 grandchildren; three nieces and a nephew.
A Mass of Christian Burial will celebrated Thursday, July 12, 2001 at Our Lady of the Annunciation Church, Queensbury, at 10 a.m.
Burial will take place at Pine Grove Cemetery in Tribes Hill. Friends and relatives may call 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at the Singleton-Healy Funeral Home, 407 Bay Road, Queensbury.
The family suggests that memorials take the form of donations to: West Glens Falls Emergency Squad, 105 Main Street, Queensbury, N.Y. 12804 or Queensbury Central Fire Department, 17 LaFayette Street, Queensbury, N.Y. 12804.

Henry Paul Gizara, 72, Caroline Street, Amsterdam, died today at the Stratton V.A. Medical Center in Albany.
