Walter E. Graff
September 4, 2001
Walter E. Graff, 80, of Rockton Street, Amsterdam, passed away Tuesday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.
Born in Hoboken, N.J., August 13, 1921, the son of Walter and Anna Majestic Graff, he lived in Hoboken as a young adult. He received his elementary education in Hoboken schools. He moved to Amsterdam and was a graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School, Class of 1938.
Walter was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre.
Mr. Graff worked first at the Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Mills in Amsterdam as a plumber. He later worked as a plumber for SUNY Albany for 25 years before retiring in 1983.
He was of the Lutheran faith.
He was a member of the John J. Wyszomirski Post 701 in Amsterdam. He also was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps before entering the Service.
He married Jean Murray Graff November 25, 1945.
In addition to his beloved wife, survivors include two loving daughters, Judith Anne Alonzo of Mechanicville and Linda Marlene Ruback of Amsterdam; and seven beloved grandchildren, Kimberly, Jason, Gregory and Kristen Alonzo and Jody, Ryan and Scott Ruback. Nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services are private and will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Saratoga National Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements are under the direction of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., Amsterdam.
Memorial contributions may be made to the United Presbyterian Church, in care of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, N.Y. 12010.

Edna Wierzchowski
September 4, 2001
Mrs. Edna R. Wierzchowski, 91, formerly of Fort Johnson and Essex Street, Amsterdam, died Tuesday morning at Montgomery Meadows Residential Health Care Facility, following a long illness.
She was born August 30, 1910 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, a daughter of the late Frank and Josephine Nitkiewicz Jablonski. She came to this area as an infant and always resided in the Fort Johnson and Amsterdam area.
She was first employed by the former Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Company. Later, she worked for Mohawk Finishing Products Inc., before retiring in 1975.
She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church.
She was married to Edward S. Wierzchowski October 15, 1932. He died February 20, 1977. She was also predeceased by a grandson, Robert John Syzdek Jr. in 1989; one sister and five brothers.
Survivors include four daughters, Doris Caputo, Amsterdam, Christine Luba, Cape Coral, Florida, Elizabeth Kilcoyne, Riverside, Rhode Island, and Carol Kadamus, Guilderland; one brother, Leo Jablonski, Town of Glen; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be held 10:30 Friday morning at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church Street, Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 o'clock at St. Stanislaus Church. Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call 5-8 Thursday afternoon and evening. Memorial contributions may be made to Montgomery Meadows Activities Program, Sandy Drive, Amsterdam, N.Y. 12010.

Neil J. Peacock
September 3, 2001
Neil J. Peacock, 69, of County Highway 110, died Monday at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam.
He was born in Rome, New York on November 17, 1931, a son of Clinton and Madeline Saddler Peacock and was a 1949 graduate of Camden Central High School. Mr. Peacock had resided in Broadalbin since 1971.
He was employed with General Electric Company, beginning in Schenectady as a machinist and then as a tool controller. In 1957, Mr. Peacock was transferred to San Diego and continued in his career at G.E. as a supply specialist, and later as an administration specialist. In 1966, he relocated to Long Island as a logistics supervisor for General Electric in Bethpage and returned to this area in 1971. He later worked at Broadalbin Manufacturing and Travis & Osco in Johnstown before becoming a partner in the former Peacock & Platt Machine Company, Inc. Mr. Peacock retired in 1997 from Ridgetop Machine & Tool, Inc. in Johnstown.
Mr. Peacock was an Army veteran and was stationed in Austria during the Korean Conflict.
He was of the Methodist faith.
He is survived by his wife, the former Ruth Merritt, whom he married June 28, 1957; a son, Timothy N. Peacock of Williamstown, N.Y.; a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and David Francey of Edwards Air Force Base, Ca.; a brother, Laurence Peacock of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three sisters, Phyllis Willson of Taberg, N.Y., Jane Puffer of Pierrepont, N.Y., and Sally Congden of Blossvale, N.Y.; a grandson, Benjamin Francey; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Barkersville Cemetery with the Rev. Robert W. Smith officiating. There will be no calling hours. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Broadalbin Volunteer Ambulance Corps or to the Kennyetto Fire Company, in care of the funeral home.
Arrangements are by the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., 38 West Main Street, Broadalbin, N.Y. 12025.

Paul P. Matis
August 31, 2001
Paul P. Matis Jr., 65 , of Clinton, N.Y., died August 31, 2001.
He was the son of Paul and Estella (Yestremski) Matis Sr. and a graduate of St. Johnsville High School, Class of 1952.
Mr. Matis had been a dairy farmer all his life, until retirement in 1999.
A graveside memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, September 7 in St. Johnsville Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Victoria M. Miller
September 4, 2001
Victoria M. Miller, 86, formerly of Broadalbin, died Tuesday evening at Little Falls Hospital.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., 38 West Main Street, Broadalbin.

Robert John Dewey Stetson
September 8, 2001
Robert John Dewey Stetson, 22, of Church Street, Fultonville, died early Saturday morning after injuries received in a motor vehicle accident.
Robert was born on Aug. 10, 1979 in Walton, the son of Timothy and Teri Vandermark Stetson. He lived in Stillwater with his family until moving to Fultonville in 1993, where he attended Fonda-Fultonville High School.
He was employed for the last 15 months in the Management and Budget Division of the Department of Environmental Conservation, Albany.
Robert had many interests, but most of all enjoyed spending time with his friends, taking trips to Royal Mountain, music and drawing. He was of the Baptist faith and was a former member of the Malta Open Bible Baptist Church.
Survivors include his loving parents Timothy Sr. and Teri Stetson of Fultonville; his devoted brother and sister, Timothy D. Stetson Jr. of Fultonville and Laura J. Stetson of Albany; his proud grandmothers, Laura Stetson of Waterville and Joan Vandermark of Walton; aunts; uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Jackson and Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville with the Rev. Philip Carey officiating. The burial will take place on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Stockwell Cemetery, Sangerfield.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday (today) from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association in care of the funeral home.

Howard R. Borntraeger
September 8, 2001
Howard R. Borntraeger, 81, formerly of Cornell Street, Amsterdam, passed away Saturday evening at St. Mary's Hospital. He had recently resided at the Park Hill Adult Home.
Born in Amsterdam March 20, 1920, a son of Karl and Ethel Palmer Borntraeger, he lived here all his life and attended Amsterdam schools.
Howard was employed by Mohawk Carpets for 40 years and later in the maintenance department of Noteworthy until he retired. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in Europe as a private.
A communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, he was active in local veterans groups such as the John J. Wyszomirski Post 701 American Legion where he served as vice commander at one time, a life member and past Chief de Guerre of the Voiture 40 et 8; the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 55 and the Polish American veterans. He was also a member of the Rockton Fish and Game Club.
His beloved wife, Frances J. Hayes, preceded him in death on April 13, 2001. They were married June 22, 1958.
Surviving are his loving daughter, Donna Marie Vega Ponce, and his loving son, Joseph Karl Borntraeger, both of Amsterdam; his son-in-law, Carlos Vega Ponce and daughter-in-law, Kimberly Borntraeger; his dear granddaughter, Ashley Rebecca Vega Ponce and his step-grandsons, Justin and Brandon Craig; a sister, Eleanor Pohlman of Amsterdam. A sister, Emily Flesh, predeceased him. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Services are Wednesday at 8:15 a.m. at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Church with the Rev. Lawrence Decker as celebrant. Interment will be in the family plot in Fairview Cemetery with military honors. Calling hours are Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The Post 701 American Legion will conduct a service at 7 p.m.
Contributions may be made to St. Michael's Memorial Fund or the 40 et 8 Child Welfare fund.

Casimir A. Gutowski
September 10, 2001
Mr. Casimir A. Gutowski, 81, of Church Street, Amsterdam, died Monday afternoon at Little Falls Hospital, Little Falls.
He was born February 8, 1920 in Amsterdam, a son of the late William and Jennie Wojtowic Gutowski. He attended local schools and always resided here.
During World War II, Mr. Gutowski served in the Army Air Force as a Master Sergeant in the air offensive in Europe with the 563rd Bomb Squadron.
He worked for the General Electric Company in Schenectady and the former M. Lurie Co. in Amsterdam. For many years, he was the co-owner of Grade's Electric Shop before retiring.
He was a member of St. Stanislaus Church. He was also a life member of the Bigelow Weavers Club, the VFW and the Polish Union of America.
He was married to Stacia A. Nowicki May 18, 1947. She died July 20, 1994. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Alexander and Henry Gutowski, and a sister, Josephine Peters.
He is survived by three brothers, Edward Gutowski and wife, Phyllis, William Gutowski and wife, Jean, all of Amsterdam, and Boles (Bill) Gutowski and wife, Lynn, of St. Johnsville; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be held 8:30 Thursday morning at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home , 200 Church Street, Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 o'clock at St. Stanislaus Church. Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 8 Wednesday afternoon and evening.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Church.

David L. Hawkins
September 7, 2001
Mr. David Lawrence Hawkins, 45, of Fort Plain passed away Friday, September 7, 2001 at his home.
He was born August 6, 1956, the son of Lester C. and Vivian A. (Ottman) Hawkins. On October 27, 1979, he married Linda Lou Smith in the United Methodist Church, Ames. She survives.
He was a lifelong area resident and dairy farmer. He was a member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church, Ames.
Besides his wife, Linda Hawkins, he is survived by two sons, Lester Carl Hawkins and Samuel V. Hawkins, all of Fort Plain; his parents, Lester C. and Vivian Hawkins of Sprout Brook; a sister, Marilyn Shirey of Villa Ridge, MO; a brother Philip Hawkins of Canajoharie; an aunt, Thelma Laymon of Buel; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 11 a.m. in the Cornerstone Baptist Church, Route 10, Ames, with the Rev. Alan Potter and the Rev. Rex Fullam officiating. Burial will follow in Ames Cemetery, Ames.
Calling hours will take place from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, September 12 at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
Contributions in Mr. Hawkins memory may be made to the Cornerstone Baptist Church, Ames.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Eileen Davis
September 10, 2001
Eileen Davis, formerly of the Theodore Roosevelt Apartments, Amsterdam, died Monday morning at Mount Loretto Nursing Home where she had resided the past year. She was 85.
Born in Amsterdam August 26, 1916, a daughter of Frank and Hazel Stiles Abel, she was a 1935 graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School.
She was a winder at one time for Mohawk Carpet Mills, and worked for the General Electric Company in Schenectady during World War II. More recently, she was employed as a cook at the Sanford Home for Women, retiring in 1983.
Mrs. Davis was a faithful and long-time member of the United Presbyterian Church and was a former member of the Lionettes, Guy Park and Hi-Lo seniors and the Women's Christian Club.
Her husband, Charles C. Davis, whom she married in 1939, died June 1, 1995.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Maureen Prouty of Schenectady; her loving son, Charles W. and his wife, Karen, Davis of Greenville, Tenn.; four dear grandchildren, Charles Davis Prouty, Charles "Dusty" Davis, Squeeker Prouty and Clifford and his wife, Connie, Davis. A great-grandson, Vincent Davis, also survives.
Services are Thursday at 11 a.m. at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, with the Rev. Dan J. Wheeler officiating. Interment is in Maple Avenue Cemetery, Fultonville. Calling hours are Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Contributions may be made in Mrs. Davis' name to GAVAC.

Frederick Thompson

Frederick Thompson, 84, Amsterdam High Rise Apartments, Amsterdam, died Monday morning at home.

Sara J. McGuigan, 71, of 35 Wall St., Roosevelt Apartments, Amsterdam, died Monday morning at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.

Adalena Gotti Van Wie
September 15, 2001
Adalena "Lee" Gotti Van Wie, 90, of West Grand Street, Palatine Bridge, passed away Saturday at her home.
Born in Canajoharie on March 23, 1911, she was the daughter of Ralph and Emelia Jannelli Gotti. She was a graduate of Canajoharie Central School in 1931. She also was a graduate of the Burrs Business School in Gloversville in 1932. She worked as a hairdresser and owned her own shop from 1933 to 1941. She, along with her husband, Alton, owned and operated Van Wie's Restaurant in Canajoharie from 1947 to 1971. She was a real estate agent for Millers Realty and M.G. Power Realty in Canajoharie.
She was a communicant of St. Peter and Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Canajoharie.
Mrs. Van Wie was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Canajoharie and was a former member of the Palatine Literary Society and Women's Business Bureau.
Adalena married her beloved Alton Van Wie on Dec. 26, 1940; he passed away on Feb. 8, 1971. She was predeceased by two loving sons, Alton Van Wie Jr. on July 14, 1992 and Thomas R. Van Wie in September of 1978 and by a dear sister, Marguerite Gotti Gruber.
Survivors include her loving daughter, Nancy Van Wie of Palatine Bridge; a dear sister, Mary Mancini of Palatine Bridge; a cherished granddaughter, Eliza Van Wie of Sarasota, Fla.; nieces; nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Peter and Paul's Roman Catholic Church, Walnut Street, Canajoharie with the Rev. William Gaffigan officiating. Interment will take place in St. Peter and Paul's Cemetery.
There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main St., Gloversville, 12078 or to the Leukemia Society of America, 85 Watervliet Ave., Albany, 12206.
Following committal services on Tuesday, the family cordially invites everyone to Adalena's home for fellowship and refreshments from 1:30 to 8 p.m., 51 West Grand St., Palatine Bridge.
Funeral arrangement are under the direction of the Lenz and Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie.
