Charlotte V. Therrien
January 20, 2002
Mrs. Charlotte V. Therrien, 81, of Nelliston died Sunday at Wells Nursing Home, Johnstown where she has been a resident.
She was born on June 17, 1920 in Ilion, NY the daughter of John and Myrtle Mowrey France.
She was raised and educated in Johnstown and resided there for many years. She was employed at Baronet Litho in Johnstown for many years. Mrs. Therrien also worked as a hostess at the Johnstown Holiday Inn and the Johnstown Hotel and worked at the Juniorama Clothing Store.
She was a member of the Catholic Daughters in Johnstown and was an avid bowler.
After her retirement Mrs. Therrien was the caretaker for the Ft. Clock Restoration in St. Johnsville, NY, was a member of the Ft. Klock Historical Society, the Adirondack Weavers Guild and was a published author of poetry and cookbooks.
She was predeceased by her two husbands, William H. Christoff; and Alfred Therrien; a brother Chester France; and her son Bruce W. Christoff, who died on December 21, 1991.
Survivors include a daughter Cheryl M. Burton of Johnstown; a grandson, James A. Longfritz, and a great grandson, Joshua B. Longfritz of Johnstown; a niece, a nephew and several cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 12 noon at the Jackson & Betz Funereal Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating. The burial will take place in the Ft. Plain Cemetery in the spring. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 11 until 12 noon before the service. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Ft. Klock Restoration Fund in care of the funeral home.

Mary Bernadette Morrissey Bodmer
January 20, 2002
Mrs. Mary Bernadette Morrissey Bodmer, 66, recently of Sharon Springs, passed away Sunday, January 20, 2002 at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, following complications from lung cancer.
She was born in Queens, NY on July 13, 1935 the daughter of Francis and Mercedes (Kennedy) Morrissey. She was the widow of John A. Quigley of Floral Park, NY and William G. Bodmer of Sprout Brook, NY.
Mary was a graduate of Scwanka High School, Class of 1952. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and was active in the Catholic Church in the communities where she lived, She was a homemaker.
Survivors include six children, Carla A. and her husband Robert Grossman of Rhinebeck, NY, John A. Bodmer of Tolland, CT, Kevin E. and his wife Alicia Bodmer of Paul Smiths, NY, Timothy W. Bodmer of San Francisco, CA, Bradley W. and his wife Lisa Bodmer of Niskayuna, NY, MaryBeth and her husband Kevin Flint of Cherry Valley, NY; a brother, William Morrissey of Lee, MA; and thirteen grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 23, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. in the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley with Rev. Ron Fralick officiating. Burial will be in the Cherry Valley Cemetery in the spring.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Avis Lippie
January 25, 2002
Avis (Ma) E. Lippie, 82, of East Main Street, Fonda, died Friday morning at the home of her son on Hawthorne Terrace in Northampton, Mass. after a short illness.
Born in Amsterdam on Dec. 12, 1919, she was the daughter of Willis H. and Anna Jeanett Campfield Cross. She attended Johnstown schools and was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Lippie was married to James Carl Lippie on June 15, 1945. He died on Feb. 16, 1970.
She was employed by several Johnstown factories including Cerrone's, Evans, Royal Knit and Swears. She later was employed by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department as a matron and cook until retiring in 1988.
Mrs. Lippie was a member of the Montgomery County Republican Committee; the Town of Mohawk Republican Committee, where she served as treasurer; the St. Monica, Juanita, Mohawk Valley Cayadutta Chapter No. 486-Order of the Eastern Star; the Montgomery County Sheriff's Association and the New York State Sheriff's Association. She served as superintendent of the homemaking department at the Montgomery-Fulton County Fair for over 20 years and she was also a past master and dispatcher of the Fonda-Fultonville Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
She is survived by her loving son, Thomas J. Lippie and his wife, Nancy A., of Northhampton, Mass.; two loving daughters, Nancy A. Lyker and her husband, William A., of Sprakers and Mary B. Romanowski and her husband, James, of Amsterdam; two sisters, Alice McGregor of New Port Richey, Fla. and Ruth Holden of Marietta, N.Y.; six wonderful grandchildren, James C. Lippie II, Edward W. Lippie, Laura M. Block, Thomas J. Lippie Jr., James W. Romanowski and Avis A. Fulk; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Lippie was predeceased by her brother, Willis H. Cross Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Johnstown Reformed Church, 351 North Perry St., Johnstown, with the Rev. Jack Millard officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.
Calling hours are Sunday afternoon from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. in the evening at the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel, 13 Belmont Place, Amsterdam.
Memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Lippie's memory to the VNA-Hospital Alliance, 168 Industrial Drive, Northampton, Mass., 01060.

Carl Jennings
January 24, 2002
Mr. Carl R. Jennings, 77, of West Grand Street, Palatine Bridge, died Thursday afternoon at the Samuel Stratton Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Albany after a long illness.
Born in the Town of Lisle on March 25, 1924, he was the son of Ray H. and Nina Leet Jennings. Mr. Jennings was a graduate of Marathon Central School. He had lived in this area since 1955.
Mr. Jennings was formerly employed by Service Employee International Union Local No. 2 of Window Cleaner's Union in New York City for over 25 years, retiring in 1989. He was also formerly employed by Lee Publications. He was of the Protestant faith.
He served in the U.S. Third Army as a sergeant during World War II.
He married the former Almarine Peterson on March 20, 1948.
Besides his wife, survivors include three sons, Raymond C. Jennings and his wife, Gaile, of Amsterdam, Wendell W. Jennings and his wife, Kathy, of Nelliston and Jack W. Jennings and his wife, Sharon, of Bakersfield, Calif.; two brothers, John Jennings, Monticello, SC and George W. Jennings of Marathon; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Ward and Robert Jennings.
A 10 a.m. funeral service will be held on Wednesday at the Chapel of Houghtaling and Smith Funeral Home Inc., 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, with the Rev. David Bowley of the Faith, Hope and Love Christian Fellowship of Canajoharie. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Road, Loudonville, 12211.

Louis J. Coluni
January 26, 2002
Louis J. Coluni, 76, of Van Buren Road, Glenville and formerly of Broadway Extension, Amsterdam, died Saturday at the Villa Mary Immaculate Nursing Home of Albany after a long illness.
Born in Amsterdam, he was the son of Louis and Amelia Caruso Coluni.
He was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School Class of 1943 and was a lifelong city resident until moving to Glenville in May 2001.
Mr. Coluni served as a 5th Ward City Supervisor of the Montgomery County Board for two terms.
He was employed for many years with the William Bartyzel Distributing Co., Inc. as district sales manager, retiring in 1987.
He served with the US Navy during WW II with the Underwater Demolition Team (SEALS) UDT #21 in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and was the recipient of two Bronze Stars.
Mr. Coluni served as a member and chaired the City Golf Commission; a member of the Mr. Carmel Bocci League; a member of the K of C Council 209 of Amsterdam; the South Side War Veterans; served as President of the Holy Name/St. Anthony Society for six years; and was a communicant of Our Lady of Mr. Carmel Roman Catholic Church; and was also a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Glenville.
He was married to the former Hilda Donohue. She died on October 14, 1997.
Survivors include one son: Louis Coluni III and wife Doris of Sanford, Maine; one daughter Amelia and her husband Harry Polomaine of Scotia; also, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 8:15 a.m. Tuesday from the DeStefano Funeral Home, Rt. 5-S, Amsterdam followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at Out Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church. Interment will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The Knights of Columbus will conduct a service at 7:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Community Hospice of Amsterdam c/o the funeral home.

Catherine M. Crispin
January 27, 2002
Mrs. Catherine McGivern Crispin, 90, of Gloversville died Sunday, January 27 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville.
She was born March 25, 1911 in Johnstown, the daughter of Laurence and Alice Wilder McGivern. She was employed as cafeteria manager of the Gloversville High School for twenty years, retiring in 1979.
Mrs. Crispin had the longest membership of the Johnstown Reformed Church. She was also a member of the Calvary Class of the church, and the Ida McGinness Senior Citizens Club of Gloversville, where she was a former member of the board of the Senior Citizen Service Center of Gloversville and Fulton County.
She was married September 3, 1933 to John D. Crispin Sr., who died March 1, 1978.
She is survived by three daughters: Clara Sammarco of Gloversville, Joanne Fabozzi and her husband Anthony of Broadalbin, Marjorie Gentile and her husband Pat of Broadalbin; one brother James McGivern of Johnstown; one sister Dorothy DiMarco of Gloversville; 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Crispin was predeceased by a son, John D. Crispin Jr in 1964; a great grandson Brandon Fabozzi in 1998; four sisters, Bertha Lachmayer, Alice Ackerbauer, Helen Fonda, and Laura Wilder and two brothers Laurence McGivern Jr. and John McGivern.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville. A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at The Reformed Church, Johnstown, with the Rev. Jack Millard officiating. Interment will take place at Fern Dale Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to The Reformed Church, 351 N. Perry St., Johnstown, NY 12095 or the Senior Citizen Service Center of Gloversville and Fulton County, Inc., 53 Church St., Gloversville, NY 12078.

Stanley C. McKay
January 26, 2002
Stanley C. McKay, 78, of Belldons Rd., Town of Florida, died Saturday morning at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Born in Niverville, NY on February 4, 1923 a son of Andrew and Barbara Kayakanckas McKay.
Mr. McKay was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving with the 1st Marine Division during the Guadalcannal Campaign during WWII. It was during this campaign that he received combat injuries that left him disabled for life.
After recuperation and rehabilitation he was employed by the Naval Depot in Scotia as a forklift operator working his way up to Supervisor of all fork lift operations before the Depot was relocated. During this time he and his department received several awards for safety and efficiency. He was then employed by the Scotia Army Depot until his medical retirement.
He was a member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, the Order of the Purple Heart, and the National Audubon Society.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church.
His wife of 38 years, Ida "May" McKay, died in 1984 followed by their son, Andrew D. McKay who died in 1985.
Survivors include his son Scott J. McKay of the Town of Florida, daughters Jacqy A. McKay of Minneapolis, MN, and Cynthia J. McKay of Latham, his current wife Beverly (DeVoe) McKay of Amsterdam, sister Dorothy McGraw of Schenectady and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Thursday morning at 11:00 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam. Calling hours are Wednesday 6 to 8 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans in care of the funeral home.

Gretchen W. Schwabrow
January 28, 2002
Mrs. Gretchen W. Schwabrow, 89, of Home St., Fort Plain died Monday morning at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam after a long illness.
She was born on January 1, 1913 in Brookmans Corners, NY the daughter of Elmer and Iva Frantzman Wagner. She attended local schools and has lived in Fort Plain since 1933.
She was employed as a supervisor for Luxuray Manufacturing in Ft. Plain for 47 years until retiring in 1976.
Mrs. Schwabrow was a charter member of the Ft. Plain VFW Womens Auxiliary and was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ft. Plain.
She was predeceased by a grandson, Mark Schwabrow on November 5, 2001.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Russell and Letty Schwabrow of Australia, and Willis and Susan Schwabrowof Johnstown, NY; a sister, Helen Nolly of Ft. Plain; three grandsons, Robert Schwabrow of Broadalbin, and Philip and Rusty Schwabrow both of California; eight great grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie, NY 13317. The Burial will take place in the Ft. Plain Cemetery in the spring. The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 5 until 7 at the funeral home where the VFW Auxiliary will meet at 6:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 126, Canajoharie, NY 13317.

Bernard Horowitz
January 26, 2002
Bernard Horowitz age 85 of the Beverwyck Community on Autumn Drive in Slingerlands, NY died Saturday January 26, 2002 at his residence.
Mr. Horowitz was born in Amsterdam, NY and graduated from the Wilbur H. Lynch High School in Amsterdam. He received his bachelor degree from Syracuse University and his master degree from the State University College at Oneonta. He had been the Director of Counseling at SUNY Cobleskill for many years and was retired. He was an Army-Air Corp. Veteran and served during World War II.
He was a member of Congregation Beth Emeth in Albany and B'nai B'rith.
He was married to Helen Goldmeer Horowitz until her passing. He is survived by his loving daughter, Dr. Susan Horowitz of Springfield, Virginia, a brother Irving Horowitz of Portland, Oregon and a sister Florence Savler of Montgomery, Alabama.
Services at the Beth Emeth Cemetery on Turner lane in Loudonville, NY on Wednesday January 30, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Horowitz Scholarship Fund at SUNY Cobleskill, Cobleskill, New York 12043.

Edna VanAvery
January 29, 2002
Mrs. Edna VanAvery, 74, of Murray Hill Road, St. Johnsville, died Monday, January 28, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam after a brief illness.
She was born on November 15, 1927 in Connecticut the daughter of Joseph and Catherine Wheeler Roca.
Mrs. VanAvery was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses in Johnstown.
She was employed with Beechnut in Canajoharie and later worked for the former Continental Mills in Gloversville.
Mrs. VanAvery was predeceased by her husband Nelson VanAvery whom she married September 27, 1953. He died December 8, 1992.
Survivors include two daughters: Kathryn Ackernecht of St. Johnsville and Judith Greenslete of Lasselsville, one son: Nelson VanAvery Jr. of St. Johnsville, two sisters: Agnes Marotta of Amsterdam and Ruth Ann Rumley of Galway, two brothers: Joseph Roca of Amsterdam and Manuel Roca of Washington, three grandchildren: Scott Ackernecht, Alissa Greenslete and Michael Greenslete, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 1:00 pm at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 East Main Street, Johnstown.
Friends may call prior to the service on Thursday from noon to 1 pm at the funeral home. Spring burial will be in Fical Cemetery, Lasselsville.

Stanley C. McKay
January 26, 2002
