Sarah Marotta Palladino
January 29, 2002
Sarah Marotta Palladino, 91, of Northern Boulevard, passed away Tuesday afternoon after a long illness.
Born in Amsterdam on December 21, 1910, she was educated locally and lived here all her life. Sarah was employed as a glove worker for Fownes Brothers Glove Co., and was involved in the family business, the Carmen Drive in Theater, for many years before she retired. A lifelong communicant of St. Michael The Archangel Roman Catholic Church, she was a member of it's Altar Rosary Society.
Sarah was the last surviving child of Antonio and Pasqualina Calvano Marotta. Her beloved husband, Michael Palladino, died March 2, 1988. Her deceased sisters were Jennie Albanese and Angelina Marotta. Her late brothers were John, Joseph, Peter, Ralph and Christopher Marotta.
Surviving her are her beloved sister-in-law, Mary Josephine Marotta, with whom she resided the past ten years; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services are Saturday at 8:30 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., followed by a Con-celebrated Mass Of Christian Burial at 9:15 am at the St. Michael The Archangel Church. Fr. Lawrence J. Decker and Fr. Robert DeMartinis celebrants. Interment will take place in the family plot in St. Michael's Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday evening from 5-8 pm at the funeral home. It is the request of the family that contributions may be made in Sarah's memory to St. Michael's Memorial Fund or the Community Hospice of Amsterdam for the wonderful care she received.

Kenneth H. Lasher
January 29, 2002
Mr. Kenneth H. Lasher, 64, of State Highway 5S, Fort Plain, passed away Tuesday afternoon, January 29, at Little Falls Hospital after a long illness.
He was born on August 23, 1937 in the Town of Minden to Ralph Lasher and Zula March Lasher Acovangelo, and was a lifelong area resident. He was a graduate of Fort Plain High School.
Mr. Lasher was formerly employed by the New York State Department of Transportation as a snow plow wingman and worked on the road crew.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He was predeceased by one brother, Melvin Lasher.
Mr. Lasher is survived by two sisters, Alberta G. Lasher and Ramona W. Herringshaw, both of the Town of Minden; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and great nieces and great nephews.
A 10:00 am funeral service will be held on Monday, February 4, 2002 at Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating. Burial will be in the Fort Plain Cemetery in the spring. Calling hours are 6-8 pm, Sunday, February 3rd at the funeral home.

Geraldine "Geri" T. Bielecki
January 30, 2002
Mrs. Geraldine "Geri" T. Bielecki, 52, of Dewitt Street, died Wednesday afternoon at her mothers home on Vanderveer Street following a brief illness.
She was born in Amsterdam on January 6, 1950 a daughter of Frank and Eleanor Halgas Swierzowski and was a lifelong area resident. Geri was a 1968 graduate of the former Bishop Scully High School and later graduated from Albany Business College in 1970. She was employed at General Electric Co. for 15 years in accounting. At the time of her death, she was employed as an audit clerk at the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance in Albany.
Geri was a coach for nearly 10 years with the Cinderella softball leagues in Amsterdam. She was also member of the Amsterdam Girls Softball Association and played for Herk's Tavern. She belonged to two bowling leagues in Amsterdam and was a member of the CSEA #690 in Albany.
Geri was a communicant of St. John's Church and St. Casimir's Church. She was a lector at St. John's Church, a member of the Pierogi crew there, and also helped out with annual parish festivals.
Geri was predeceased by her brother, Lawrence Swierzowski, who died in 1947 and her father, Frank, who died in 1989.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Michael P. Bielecki, who she married on July 25, 1987, a sister Christine M. Sommar of North Wales, PA., four nieces, Kimberly Rubin, Kristin Sommar, Katie Sommar and Megan Sommar, a nephew, Jeffrey J. Sommar, and several cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Riley Mortuary, 110 Division Street, Amsterdam followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Church, 44 Vanderveer Street. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the mortuary. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the St. John's Church, St. Casimir's Church, or to the Community Hospice of Amsterdam. Arrangements are by the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., Broadalbin.

Angelina Fondacaro
January 28, 2002
Angelina Fondacaro, 94, of Mirimar, Florida, passed away Monday, January 28. Angelina was born in Amsterdam, New York and moved with her family in 1958 to South Florida. She is survived by her daughter, Dolores Hermann, grandsons; Gary Conti (Nina) and Kevin Conti (Relles), 7 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren.

Theodore J. Fraczek

Theodore J. Fraczek, 88, of State Highway 30, Amsterdam, died Saturday, February 9, 2002 at Centra State Hospital in Freehold, New Jersey.
Born on November 9, 1913 in Liverpool, NY. He was the son of the late Dominic and Mary Fraczek. He attended Amsterdam schools. He was the beloved husband of Winifred Cetnar Fraczek for over 54 years. They were married on April 27, 1947. He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II in the Pacific Theater. He resided in Amsterdam for 30 years where he worked and was a member of the former St. John's Club and was a member of the Church of St. John the Baptist. Mr Fraczek was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 55. He moved to Broadalbin where he was the owner and operator of Franz Tavern for 10 years before moving to Perth. He was last employed for the General Electric Company in Schenectady and retired from there in 1974.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include his beloved children, Gerry Brown and her husband Jack of Galway; Connie Cannizzaro and her husband; John of Freehold, New Jersey; Ted Fraczek of Saratoga Springs; and Paul Fraczek and his wife, Angela of Amsterdam; his dear sisters, Sue Fraczek and Sylvia Lavigna both of Amsterdam and Mary Schneider of Santa Ana, California; his brothers, Zig Fraczek and Frank Fraczek both of Bayonet Point, Florida; his loving grandchildren, Amy Brown of Galway, John and Lisa Cannizzaro of Freehold, New Jersey; Alea and Sieara of Amsterdam and Matthew Fraczek-Syczyk of Rhinebeck; also several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister, Jean Roman and brother, Dominick Fraczek.
Viewing hours will be Monday, February 11th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel, 13 Belmont Place. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 55 will conduct a service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will beheld on Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. at the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel followed at 9:30 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of St. John the Baptist with Father Stanislaus Swierzowski as celebrant. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of St. John the Baptist in care of the funeral chapel.

Doris DeNise
February 11, 2002
Doris DeNise, 85, of Church Street, passed away this morning (Monday) at the Montgomery Meadows after a long illness.
Born in Amsterdam on July 12, 1916, a daughter of David Cady DeNise and Ella McConnell DeNise, she was a 1934 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School, and the Amsterdam School of Commerce. Doris was employed as a winder in the small motor division of General Electric Cp. for thirty years before she retired in 1971. She was a member of the G.E. Quarter Century Club, and a longtime member of United Presbyterian Church.
Her beloved companion of many years, Chester Blaze (Blazewski) predeceased her.
Doris was know for her love of family and friends and her great sense of humor.
Survivors include her loving nephews John P. Miller Jr., of Amsterdam, and Dale L. Miller of Albany; her dear sister in law and brother in law; Lorraine and John P. Miller Sr., of Tribes Hill; her lifelong friends Barbara Yevoli and her daughter Darlene Oakes, and Dolores Frumkin, along with many other friends and cousins. Services are Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, with the Rev. Dan J. wheeler officiating.
Interment is at the convenience of the family at St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Calling hours are Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. It was Doris wish that flowers be omitted and contributions may be made to the building fund of the United Presbyterian Church in care of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc.

Marion S. O'Brien
February 9, 2002
Marion S. O'Brien, 94, of 28 Ann St., St. Johnsville, passed away on Saturday, February 9, 2002 with her family by her side.
She was born February 1, 1908 in Keck Center, (Town of Palatine), the daughter of the late James and Nancy (Heroth) Sullivan. Marion was the oldest alumni of St. Johnsville High School, class of 1923, and also graduated from Canajoharie Teachers Training Class of 1925.
Marion was first married to William McMahon. She was later married to Arden O'Brien.
Mrs. O'Brien was first employed as a schoolteacher in Mindenville, then worked for the former Remington Rand during World War II. At one time she was employed at Cherry Burrells as a time clerk and the former Library Bureau. Her last occupation was Circulation Manager of the Little Falls Evening Times for the Town of St. Johnsville, from 1974 and retiring in 2000 at the age of 92.
Survivors include her daughter: Melanie (Tiny) Shuster and husband Stanley of St. Johnsville, seven grandchildren: Doreen Shuster, James Shuster, Wayne Shuster and wife Lori, Arthur Shuster and wife Donnalyn, Karl Shuster and wife Tina, Maureen Black and husband Don, and Michael McMahon, ten great grandchildren; Heather and Jennifer Shuster, Morgan and Alexander Shuster, Michael, Benjamin and Sean Shuster, Billy Black and Heather and Michael McMahon, several nieces and nephews, special friends; Lou Frezza and Karie Cook and her canine companion for 13 years; Butchie - Chang, her Pekingese dog.
She was predeceased by a son; William McMahon in 1979; two sisters; Marge Wooster in 1990 and Ann Horman in 1997 and a brother; Fred Daniel Sullivan in 1997.
In keeping with Marion's wishes, cremation will take place under the direction of the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center Street, St. Johnsville. There are no calling hours. Graveside services will be held at St. Johnsville Cemetery in the spring. All memorial contributions may be made to Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter, Inc., 133 Hilltop road, Sprakers, NY 12166.

Matthew Perfetti
February 12, 2002
Matthew Perfetti, 83, of Amsterdam, NY died Tuesday evening at St. Mary's Hospital after a long illness.
He was born December 27, 1918 in Amsterdam, NY the son of Augusto and Maria Bellardini Perfetti. He was a lifelong Amsterdam resident and attended local schools.
During World War II Mr. Perfetti served with the United States Air Force.
Mr. Perfetti was employed by General Electric Co. in Schenectady for many years until his retirement in 1982.
Mr. Perfetti started as a local boxer fighting behind Lanzi's Grill in Amsterdam. He was a Golden Gloves champion as an amateur. He later became a professional fighter, fighting throughout the United States and Europe, where he had 33 consecutive wins which qualified him for a shot at the world championship. He then lost in a disputed decision match against Alli Stoltz to give him a shot at the title.
Mr. Perfetti was a member of the South Side Veterans Association. He was of the Roman Catholic faith.
Survivors include his wife Linda Perfetti whom he married on July 11, 1944; his son Paul M. Perfetti of Amsterdam; his daughter and son-in-law Tina and Paul Colangelo of Amsterdam; two sisters, Salvina Lasinski and Ethel Yates both of Amsterdam; three grandchildren, Roxanne and Matthew Colangelo, and Carrie Perfetti, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11:00 at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010. The burial will take place in the Mount Carmel Cemetery, Amsterdam. The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Hospice of Amsterdam in care of the funeral home.

Nora E. Rowley Speanburg
February 12, 2002
Nora E. Rowley Speanburg, 70, of County Highway 107, Johnstown, passed away Tuesday morning at the Montgomery Meadows with her family at her side.
Born in Amsterdam on February 1, 1932, she was the daughter of Charles and Mary Eliff Rowley. She was educated locally. After moving to Schenectady, Nora was employed as a productionist for Campbell Plastics until ill health forced her retirement. She returned to the Amsterdam area in June of 2000. She was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church.
Nora leaves behind her dear companion, Olga Voyiatzis with whom she resided for many years; her loving family also includes her sister: Gloria Nelli and her husband James of Tribes Hill; her brother: Charles F. and his wife Mary Rowley of Gansevoort; her sister in law Susan Rowley of Amsterdam; her goddaughter: Jackie Smith-Bergen of Galway; nieces and nephews; Mary Lou Schmidtmann, Mary Lynn DeRose, Loreen Rowley, John LaPorta, Dennis and Donald Nelli; as well as grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins, and her special friend "Randy". She was predeceased by her brothers; John and Thomas Rowley.
Funeral services are Friday at 8:15 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Fr. Lawrence J. Decker, celebrant. Interment is in St. Michael's Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home where a legacy candle ceremony will take place at 7:45 p.m. Contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of St. Michael's Church in care of the funeral home. Nora's family will always remember her for the warmth, love, and concern that she had for them. Rest in peace, Nora.

Charlotte Eglin
February 12, 2002
Charlotte Eglin, 79, of County Highway 110, died Tuesday afternoon at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
She was born in Broadalbin on May 9, 1922 a daughter of Roy and Pearl Baird Warner and was a lifelong resident. Mrs. Eglin attended local schools. She was employed at the Elmer Little Glove Factory in Johnstown for 19 years and later she operated a glue machine at Mohawk Furniture in Broadalbin. Mrs. Eglin retired in 1985. Upon her retirement, she served as an Election Inspector for the Town and Village of Broadalbin. She was a member and past president of the Union Mills Cemetery Association. Mrs. Eglin was a member of the Broadalbin Baptist Church. She was a former member of the Perthshire Grange.
Mrs. Eglin was predeceased by two brothers, Robert Warner and Donald Warner, and a sister Dora Warner.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Emmett W. Eglin, whom she married on January 24, 1944, two sons William E. Eglin and David L. Eglin, both of Broadalbin; a sister Gladys Darling of Gloversville; six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Mrs. Eglin enjoyed spending time with her family.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., 38 West Main Street, Broadalbin with the Rev. Doug Blanc officiating. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. The burial will take place in the spring at the Union Mills Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Broadalbin Volunteer Ambulance Corps or to the Kennyetto Fire Company, both in care of the funeral home.

Edward Gomulka
February 15, 2002
Mr. Edward J. Gomulka, 86, formerly of Manny's Corners, Amsterdam, died Friday at Wells Nursing Home, Johnstown, after a long illness.
He was born July 12, 1915 in Amsterdam, the son of Joseph and Katherine Wrozek Gomulka.
Mr. Gomulka was a World War II Navy veteran.
He was employed with the former Bigelow and Sanford Carpet Co. and was later employed as an insurance agent with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in Amsterdam until his retirement.
Mr. Gomulka was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Amsterdam.
Survivors include his wife, Sophia Kaminski Gomulka, whom he married Aug. 8, 1936; two daughters, Susan Goldy of Amsterdam and Elizabeth Swierzowski of Johnstown; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 12 noon at St. Patrick's Church, Johnstown. Spring burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Amsterdam.
Friends may call on Monday prior to the service from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 E. Main St., Johnstown.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Wells Nursing Home Inc., 201 W. Madison Ave., Johnstown, 12095.

Blanche Conboy
February 15, 2002
Blanche B. Conboy, 77, of Clizbe Avenue, Amsterdam, formerly a resident of Canajoharie, passed away Friday at Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility.
Born in Utica on July 9, 1924, she was a daughter of John and Anna Blancher Bohner. She was a lifelong resident of Utica and Canajoharie and attended Utica schools.
Mrs. Conboy was a homemaker. She was very active with the Aldersgate Free Methodist Church in Canajoharie.
She married Charles J. Conboy on Aug. 5, 1944.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Michael Conboy, of South Deerfield, Mass.; three daughters, Kathleen Conboy of Rotterdam, Nanette Everson of Canajoharie, and Christine McGrath of Apex, N.C.; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Aldersgate Free Methodist Church in Canajoharie or to the Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Lenz and Betz Funeral Home, Canajoharie.

Martin Kazala
February 16, 2002
Mr. Martin J. Kazala, 82, of West Main Street, Amsterdam, died Saturday morning on arrival at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after being stricken at home.
Born Sept. 15, 1919 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Joseph and Petronella Paragas Kazala. He was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Kazala was employed by Mohawk Finishing Co. in Amsterdam for a number of years.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 1st Division. He served in the North African campaign, Normandy, the European Theatre and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a prisoner of war and was awarded the Purple Heart twice.
Mr. Kazala was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam and was a member and past commander of the Disabled American Veterans.
He was married on Sept. 30, 1940 to Florence Stark.
Besides his wife, he is survived by four sons, George Kazala, Keith Kazala and Timothy Kazala, all of Amsterdam and Richard M. Kazala of San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Lee Ann Kazala of Amsterdam; a sister, Helen Bellinger of Amsterdam; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a son, Larry Kazala, who died in 2001.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 8:15 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:15 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, East Main Street, Amsterdam. Burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. A Legacy Candle Ceremony will be conducted Monday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Church Memorial Fund, East Main St., Amsterdam, 12010 or to G.A.V.A.C., P.O. Box 11, Amsterdam, 12010.
