Adeline Gniady Magielda, 94, of McCleary Avenue, Amsterdam, passed away Friday evening at the St. Johnsville Nursing Home where she had been a resident.
Born in Amsterdam on Aug. 12, 1907, she was a daughter of Stanislaus and Mary Gniady. She was a lifelong area resident and attended St. Stanislaus School.
She was the former owner and operator of Adeline's Corset and Dress Shop of Amsterdam for 20 years. She later worked at the Martin's Specialty Shop in Amsterdam, retiring in the mid 1970s. Mrs. Magielda also was a piano teacher out of her home.
She was a devout housewife and Roman Catholic.
She was a communicant of St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church and a member of the Altar Rosary Society.
She married Stanley Magielda in 1928; he passed away in 1979.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Holmes and her husband, John, of Guilderland; two grandchildren, Kathy Menech of Albany and Wendy Van Dyke of Schenectady.
She was predeceased by a sister, Antoinette Przyblo, three weeks ago.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam. Spring burial will take place in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
There are no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church, Cornell Street, Amsterdam, 12010.
Arrangements are under the directions of the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.
Nellie Eva Pocus Liberis

Nellie Eva Pocus Liberis, 79, of Fairmount Ave., passed away Sunday morning at the E.L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility where she had been a resident for three weeks.
Born in Little Falls, NY on January 29, 1923 a daughter of Joseph and Stasia Pocus. She graduated from West Canada Valley Central School in Middleville, NY class of 1942. She later graduated from the Excelsior School of Business in Utica with a Secretarial Degree in 1944.
Mrs. Liberis was employed by the U.S. Navy Depot in Scotia and then the U.S. Army Depot in Rotterdam. She was last employed by Mohasco Corp. in Amsterdam as an Executive Secretary retiring in the 1980's. During her retirement she spent several years as Secretary-Recorder for the World War I Veterans of the American Legion at their annual conventions in Amsterdam. In early 1990 she served as a census taker in the Amsterdam area for the National Census.
She was a communicant of St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam.
She was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxillary, the American Legion Auxillary Post 39. She was also a member of the St. Casimir's Church Ladies Auxillary, the Knights of Lithuania and the American Lithuanian Club Women's Auxillary.
Mrs. Liberis was a dedicated homemaker and enjoyed her hobbies of sewing, needlecraft, growing flowers and beautifying her home.
She was predeceased by a young brother, Stanley Pocus.
She married her devoted husband, Edmund A. Liberis on October 21, 1945. He survives. Survivors also include one loving son, William "Bill" Liberis of Amsterdam; one loving daughter, Elizabeth A. "Betty" Minnitti and her husband Tom of Amsterdam; two dear sisters, Agnes Szarejko and her husband Deacon Walter Szarejko of Newport, NY and Francis Eldridge of Bellview, Florida. Several dear nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 8:15 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam with Father Stanislaus Swierzowski as celebrant and Father Leo F. Potvin of Newport, NY as con-celebrant. Deacon of Mass Walter A. Szarejko will also preside. Interment will be in St. Casimir's Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Casimir's Church Memorial Fund or to the the E.L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility both care of the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc.
Leona B. Frey

Leona B. Frey, 82, formerly of Sunset Road, Amsterdam, passed away Monday at her daughter's home in Novato, California.
Born in August 24, 1919 in Allport, Pa., she was a daughter of George Washington and Mary L. McDonald Swisher. She graduated high school in Elmira and later received her B.S. degree in Business from Russell Sage College, Albany.
She moved to Amsterdam in 1940 and remained there until moving to California in August of 2000.
She was employed for over 35 years by Montgomery County as a supervisor of the Social Services Dept.
She was a member of the American Red Cross. She was past president of the NYS Chapter of the Business and Professional Women's Organization. Mrs. Frey was an emergency medical technician with the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps for 16 years. She was also a member of the Inman Senior Citizens Center in Amsterdam and provided tax preparation services for seniors.
She was predeceased by her husband, Carl H. Frey, whom she married on June 29, 1953.
Survivors include two daughters, Colleen Rose of Novato, California and Linda Holt of Broadalbin; three grandchildren, Christian D. Rose of San Rafael, California, Scott Holt and Ame Dickson, both of Broadalbin; two step sons, Arthur C. Frey of San Jose, California and William Frey of Amsterdam; a brother, Orvis Swisher of Beaver Dams; a best friend, Eva Swisher of Beaver Dams. Several great-grandchildren also survive.
She was predeceased by a sister, Grace and brothers, Chester, Clarence and Lloyd.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday evening, February 6, at 7 p.m. at the Cranesville Reformed Church, Cranesville, with the Rev. Jacob Marvel officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 11, Amsterdam, 12010 or to the Cranesville Reformed Church, 105 Cranes Hollow Road, Amsterdam, 12010.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.
Lee James "Jim" Whitbeck

Mr. Lee James "Jim" Whitbeck, 66, of Sloane Ave., Amsterdam died Sunday night at his home after a long illness.
He was born on May 31, 1935 the son of Douglas and Sadie Contine Whitbeck. He was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools.
Mr. Whitbeck was employed by many different newspapers as a route man. He was instrumental in setting up many different routes for the papers, throughout the area.
Mr. Whitbeck was also an accomplished poet. He was a member of the National Poets Society, the North American Poets Society and the North American Poetry Guild where he was published many times for his writings. He received the honor of Poet of the Year in 1996, 1999, and 2001 and is acknowledged for his writings in the Smithsonian Institute.
Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather "big dad", great grandfather, brother and friend. He loved people and is a forever friend.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Margaret Whitbeck. She died in 1983. He was also predeceased by a brother, John D. Whitbeck, and a sister, Catherine Capperello.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Covey Whitbeck, whom he married on June 21, 1958; three daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah MacDonald of Amsterdam, Felicia and Shawn Waldvogel of Johnstown, and Jymmi and James Kapack of Galway; three sisters, Anna Mae Johnson, Flora Cheney, and Mary Sanford all of Amsterdam; six grandchildren, Shawn, Michael, Tiffany, Derek, Alice and Whitney Waldvogel; four great grandchildren, Shawnie, Kobe, Tiana, and Michael Waldvogel; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010. The burial will take place in the Green Hill Cemetery in the spring. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Daniel Jay Taylor

Mr. Daniel Jay Taylor, 20, of Abeling St., Canajoharie died Sunday, February 3, 2002 on Old Sprakers Road, Canajoharie in an automobile accident.
He was born September 19, 1981 in Amsterdam, NY to Howard Jr. and Doreen Fusco Taylor,
Mr. Taylor was a graduate of Canajoharie High School, class of 1999. He was employed by Price Chopper in Palatine Bridge in the produce department. He was a lifelong area resident.
He was of Roman Catholic faith.
He was a former varsity baseball and basketball player at Canajoharie Central School and enjoyed all kinds of music.
He is survived by his parents: Howard, Jr. and Doreen Taylor of Canajoharie; maternal grandparents: Patsy and Florence Fusco of Elmont; paternal grandmother: Florence Taylor of Palatine Bridge; 6 brothers: Howard Taylor, III and Patrick Taylor, both of Albany, Christopher, Anthony, Nicholas and Brandon Taylor, all of Canajoharie; two sisters: Doriann Nirschl of Marietta, GA and Destinee Taylor of Canajoharie; one niece: Taylor Ana Nirschl of Marietta, GA; aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, February 7, 2002 at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie with Father Kenneth Swain of St. James Roman Catholic Church. Calling hours are 5-8 PM, Wednesday, February 6 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice in memory of Daniel Jay Taylor.
James J. Baker

Captain James J. Baker, 81, formerly of Amsterdam, passed away January 19, 2002 in El Paso, Texas.
Born in Amsterdam, he was the son of the late Jacob and Victoria Gurkowski Baker.
He was a graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School Class of 1939.
Mr. Baker served with the US Army for 31 years and was a veteran of WW II, Korea and Vietnam Wars, retiring in 1973.
He was predeceased by his first wife of 47 years, Melina Puglisi. She died in 1989.
Survivors include his wife Simone Baker; two sons, Dr. James Baker and Michael Baker; one daughter, Tricia Leland, all of Texas; one sister, Jane Viscusi of Schenectady and three grandchildren.
Funeral services and burial with full military honors was held in Fort Bliss National Cemetery, Texas.
Vernice B. Chandler
January 29, 2002
Vernice Chandler passed away January 29 at home in Fort Wayne, IN. She was born in Palatine Bridge to David J. Hogan and Pearl M. Grosback, living in Fultonville until moving to Fort Wayne in 1966.
She was a homemaker and also a teacher's aide for Fort Wayne Community Schools.
Survivors include her husband, Curtis J. Chandler; three daughters: Janet Mattix, JoAnn McQuade, Cheryl Wolever; a sister: Jeane Raym; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren.
Services were February 2.
Jane Soltys Tatlock

Jane Soltys Tatlock, 83, formerly of Mechanic Street, passed away Tuesday morning at Montgomery Meadows.
Born in Amsterdam on September 27, 1918 a daughter of Jan and Nellie Magielda Soltys, she was a lifelong resident. Mrs. Tatlock was employed as a machine operator and floor lady for Esquire Novelty in Amsterdam until she retired in 1980.
Following her marriage she assisted in the large garden on the Tatlock property on Swart Hill. She also loved to vacation in York, Maine.
Mrs. Tatlock served as president of the patients council of Montgomery Meadows. She was a communicant of the Good Shepherd Polish National Catholic Church.
Her beloved husband, Ralph Tatlock, whom she married on November 30, 1944, passed away in 1996.
Her loving family includes her sons: Robert and his wife Jill Tatlock of Amsterdam; Gary and his wife Sandy Tatlock of Broadalbin; a step-son: Alan and his wife Jane Tatlock of Galway. A step-daughter: Carolyn Daury predeceased her.
Twelve grandchildren, three great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services are at the convenience of the family. Interment will take place in Good Shepherd Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Contributions may be made to the Activities Department of Montgomery Meadows or the Good Shepherd Church in care of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, to whom the family has entrusted the arrangements.
Josie Roberts

Mrs. Josie Roberts, 88, of James Street died Tuesday morning at her home.
Born on May 11, 1913 in Amsterdam she was the daughter of William and Julia Tylutki Raczynski. Mrs. Roberts attended Minaville Schools and was a lifelong area resident.
She was employed by Mohawk Carpet Mills and later for Inmans Box Company.
She was married to Stanley F. Roberts. He died December 31, 1989.
Mrs. Roberts was a member of St. Stanislaus Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Julia Bogdan and her husband, Edward of Broadalbin and Mary Ann Bogdan and her husband Joseph of Frankfort, NY; two brothers, William Raczynski of Perth and Peter Raczynski of Fultonville; three sisters Katherine Rasalas and Mary Gawlak both of Syracuse and Anna Raczynski of Fultonville; eight grandchildren, Timothy Bogdan and his wife Debbie of Galway, Michael Bogdan and his wife, Lorraine and Robert Bogdan and his wife, Beata of Broadalbin, Gary Bogdan and his wife, Patti of Hadley, NY, Doris Manley and her husband David of Marcy, Brian Bogdan and his wife, Diane of Succassunna, New Jersey, Mark Bogdan and his wife, Pam of Massena, and Linette Bogdan of Frankfort, NY; 16 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Mrs. Roberts was predeceased by four brothers, Joseph Raczynski, Anthony Raczynski, Andrew Raczynski and John Raczynski.
Funeral services will be held 8:30 a.m. Friday at the Guzielek-Pomykaj Funeral Home, 13 Belmont Place followed at 9:00 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stanislaus Church. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Thursday afternoon from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Roberts' memory to St. Stanislaus School in care of the funeral home.
Martin Burak

Mr. Martin Burak, 51, of Milton Avenue, Amsterdam, NY died unexpectedly at his home on Monday.
Born August 22, 1950 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Stephan and Henrietta Standner Burak Sr. He was a life long Amsterdam resident and was a 1968 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School.
He was self employed as a roofer for a number of years.
Mr. Burak played football for the original Little Giants Football League, played on many Dart Teams in the area and loved sports. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, Post 701.
He is survived by his mother; Henrietta Standner Burak of Amsterdam; a brother, Stephan Burak Jr. of Charleston, NY. Aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY, with the Rev. William E. Siiss officiating. Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery in Amsterdam. The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Lottie V. Lewis

Lottie V. Lewis, 83, of Wilds Road, Fort Johnson, passed away Tuesday morning at her home.
Born is Glen, NY on October 23, 1918 a daughter of Michael and Mary Tumidajewicz Motyl. She was a lifelong area resident and attended the former Log City School in Fort Johnson, NY.
Lottie was employed as a winder for Mohasco for many years.
She was a communicant of St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church.
She is survived by her beloved daughter Linda Lewis of Fort Johnson; four sisters: Stella Taboleski and Bernice Kilinski both of Amsterdam; Josephine Kilinski of Perth and Winifred Urbelewicz of Waterford; nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the convenience of the family at St. Stanislaus Church. Interment will take place in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Liberty Association in care of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, to whom the family has entrusted the arrangements.
