Patrick A. Leonetti
February 25, 2002
Patrick A. Leonetti, 82, of State Hwy 67, passed away Monday afternoon at St. Mary's Hospital after being stricken at home.
Born in Amsterdam on April 13, 1919, a son of Charles and Madeline Guiffre Leonetti, he was a lifelong resident and attended local schools.
Mr. Leonetti served with the Us Army from 1940 to 1945, in Europe and Cairo in the Middle Eastern Campaign. He was employed for the city of Amsterdam Recreation Department as groundskeeper for many years. Later, he was employed as a security guard for Wackenhut Corp. until his retirement. Pat's favorite pastime was cooking for his family, neighbors and friends.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.
He is survived by his beloved wife, the former Ann Swiatecka whom he married on July 3, 1946. Together they enjoyed fifty-five years.
His loving daughter Madeline and her husband Jim Bottisti of Broadalbin; grandsons: Michael and Stephen Furman; brother, Vito DiSalvi of Amsterdam; sisters: Lucy DiSalvi and Anna Marie Cox both of Albany; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
He was predeceased by a sister: Jennie Meyers of Gloversville.
Services are Thursday at 9:15 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church. Interment is in St. Michael's Cemetery. Calling hours are today from 5-8 p.m. Contributions may be made to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps, PO Box 11, Amsterdam.

Ernestine Gilda Wood
February 25, 2002
Mrs. Ernestine Gilda Wood, 74, of Lincoln Avenue, died Monday afternoon at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
Born May 15, 1927 in Broadalbin, NY, she was the daughter of Aaron and Alice E. Kissinger VanDerSluys. In 1945 she graduated from Broadalbin High School and moved from Broadalbin to Amsterdam twenty two years ago.
She was employed as a hairdresser in Broadalbin for a short time, before working as a waitress at the White Holland House in Broadalbin for twenty five years, until retiring in 1976.
Mrs. wood was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Amsterdam, the church's Women Christian Service Circle and choir. She was also a former member of the Broadalbin Methodist Choir, St. Lukes Evangelical Lutheran Church Choir and Mohawk Valley Chorus.
She loved music and enjoyed people a great deal.
Mrs. Wood is survived by her loving family; a daughter, Claudia G. Stack of Amsterdam; two sisters, Beverly J. VanDerSluys and Retha Danylec both of Amsterdam; two grandchildren, Daniel Richard Stack and Jason Andrew Stack; a great grandson, Kieran; and several cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 42 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, with the Rev. William E. Siiss officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY. A Legacy Candle Ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. that evening.
Flowers are acceptable, however those desiring may make memorial contributions in her memory to the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 42 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Robert Cebula
February 24, 2002
Robert Cebula, 66, of Hammondtown Road, passed away Sunday at St. Peter's Hospital.
Born in Amsterdam on January 23, 1936 a son of Martin A. and Janis Elinski Cebula, he was educated locally. He was self-employed as a truck driver and a cook, a trade that he learned in the Army, for various restaurants over the years. He moved to New Jersey as a young man where he lived for many years before moving to the Sarasota, Florida area, where he lived for over ten years. Last summer Bob moved back to the capital area to be closer to his sister Jerda and her family. An Army veteran, he served during the Korean conflict.
He was of the Roman Catholic Faith.
He is survived by a sister: Jerda Sievert of Amsterdam; a nephew Billy Sievert and nieces, Yvonne and Wendy.
His parents and a brother Gerald predeceased him.
Services are Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, with Fr. Edward Sipperly, officiating. Interment is in St. John the Baptist Cemetery. A calling hour will begin at 12 noon Thursday at the funeral home.

Gertrude Dennison Aldrich

Gertrude Dennison Aldrich, age 82, of Inlet Oaks Village died Monday, February 25, 2002 at Grand Stand Regional Medical Center.
Born January 5, 1920 in Mariaville, NY, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Carrie Smith Dennison. Mrs. Aldrich spent most of her life in Amsterdam, NY where she was employed with the Amsterdam School District until retiring in 1981. Mrs. Aldrich moved to the area in 1991.
She was a member of Belin United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Aldrich was preceded in death by her husband, Merton E. Aldrich in 2001.
Surviving are her daughter, Margaret Aldrich of Amsterdam; son, James Aldrich of Brookville, Ohio and two grandchildren, Ellyn and Douglas Aldrich both of Brookville, Ohio.
Services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday at Belin United Methodist Church, Murrells Inlet, SC.
Inurement will be later in Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill, NY.
Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 950 48th Avenue North, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Fred R. Bryce
February 26, 2002
Fred R. Bryce, 82, of the High Rise Apartments, passed away suddenly Tuesday morning at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.
Born in North Broadalbin on February 2, 1920, a son of Ray and Ethel Hart Bryce, he attended Broadalbin High School. During World War II, he served with the US Navy.
He was employed as a bus driver for the former Charles Vollmer Bus Co. and later the City of Amsterdam. His career spanned over fifty years before he retired. An avid weight lifter, Fred competed and won many trophies since 1939, including the "Eastern State Champion" award in 1953. He was honored at a dinner in his name on February 3rd of this year at Lanzi's on the Lake by members of the YMCA.
He was a life member of the Amsterdam YMCA, a member of the Hemlock Gospel Church in North Broadalbin, and the Broadalbin Baptist Church.
His beloved wife, the former Eve Kreitlow, whom he married in 1942, preceded him in death on February 21, 2000.
His loving family includes his son, Blaine and his wife Carol Bryce of Menands, a daughter: Shirley Bryce of Amsterdam; a sister Ann Thomas of Mayfield; six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends survive.
Calling hours are Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, where a prayer service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Interment will take place in Broadalbin Cemetery in the spring. Contributions may be made to the Amsterdam YMCA, 24 Division Street, or Community Hospice of Amsterdam, 40 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, 12010.

Kolin F. Raasch
February 25, 2002
Mr. Kolin F. Raasch, 71, of Parsons Road, Sharon Springs, NY died Monday, February 25, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital Amsterdam after a brief illness.
He was born in Amsterdam, NY on October 9, 1930 the son of Alvin and Mary Hazzard Raasch.
Mr. Raasch was educated in Canajoharie and Northville Schools.
Mr. Raasch was employed as a waste water treatment operator for Schenectady International, retiring in 1994. Most recently he was employed as the caretaker of Leesville Cemetery, Sharon Springs during his retirement.
He had been a resident of the Town of Sharon for the past six years. Prior to that he resided in Johnstown, NY.
Mr. Raasch was a Veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army as a CPL in Special Duties Army Engineer/Gun Commander 90M.
He was of the Protestant faith.
Mr. Raasch was a life member of the N.R.A.
He married Marion J. Woodbeck Raasch on May 12, 1973 at the Reformed Church in Canajoharie.
Survivors include his wife Marion J. Raasch of the Town of Sharon, NY; three stepsons: Dewey B. Darrow, Jr., Burlington, VT; Douglas E. Darrow, Fultonville, NY; and Theodore A. Darrow of Fort Plain, NY; one brother: Richard L. Raasch of Fort Plain, NY; nine step grandchildren; 16 step great grandchildren and several cousins.
A 10:00 a.m. funeral service will be held on Friday, March 1, 2002 at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda, NY. Calling hours are Thursday, February 28 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Kolin F. Raasch to: Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main Street, Gloversville, NY 12078 or American Diabetes Assoc., 50 Colvin Avenue, Albany, NY 12205.

Anna Costanzo Sheckton

Anna Costanzo Sheckton, 101, formerly of Reid St., Amsterdam, passed away Monday at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Malfa, Italy on October 7, 1900 she was a daughter of Tomaso and Rachela Zanca Costanzo. She moved to the United States as a child settling in Amsterdam. She lived the rest of her life in Amsterdam and attended local schools.
Mrs. Sheckton was a Creeler at Mohasco Corp. in Amsterdam for many years. She was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam. She married Joseph Sheckton in 1930. He passed away on May 30, 1982.
Survivors include one son; John Sheckton of Amsterdam, NY; two granddaughters; Linda Peters and Brenda Sheckton; two great grandchildren; Nicole Peters and Ryan Pringle. Nieces nephews and cousins also survive.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam. Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. Calling hours are private. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael's Church Memorial Fund, PO Box 699, Amsterdam, NY 12010. Arrangements are under the direction of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Leona M. Charsky

Leona M. Charsky, 87, formerly of Rockwood died Monday, February 25, 2002 at Ponce de Leon Care Center, St. Augustine, Florida after a long illness.
She was born December 21, 1914 in Johnstown, NY the daughter of Eseck and Anna Hurd Sanders and attended Johnstown schools.
Mrs. Charsky was employed as a slipper maker for George Johns Sportswear and also as a domestic for various local families.
She was a member of the Mohawk Council Degree of Pocahontas, VFW Ladies Auxiliary 7097 and the Shirley J. Luck Seniors Center. She was also a member of Rockwood Garoga Lasselsville Fire Department Auxiliary and the Office of the Aging in Hastings, Florida.
She was married to the late Thomas Frank Charsky. He died October 7, 1978.
Mrs. Charsky is survived by five daughters: Faye Passino, Daytona Bleach, FL, Loretta Charsky, Gloversville, NY, Dawn Guiffre, Amsterdam, NY, Leona Cizek, Riverdale, MD. Veronica Charsky, Riverdale, MD; 13 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by three sisters; Margaret Catton, Little River, SC, Rachel Flint, Canajoharie and Phyliss Smith, Herkimer.
She was predeceased by two brothers Dorr and Eseck Sanders.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at St. Anthony's Church in Johnstown with the Rev. James Fitzmaurice, pastor as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Johnstown in the spring.
Calling hours will be Friday 2-4 and 6-8 at the Barter and Donnan Funeral Home, 11 North Melcher Street, Johnstown.
Donations may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main Street, Gloversville or the Shirley J. Luck Senior Center, 109 E. Main Street, Johnstown.

Irvin L. Schedlbauer
February 23, 2002
Irvin L. Schedlbauer, 85, passed away after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease on Saturday, February 23, 2002 at the New York State Veterans Nursing Home, Oxford, New York. Irvin's loving wife Cora M. Schedlbauer, predeceased him in September of 2001.
His parents Joseph and Blanche Schedlbauer, brothers; Charles, LeRoy and Lewis also predeceased him.
Surviving Irvin are; his son Mark Schedlbauer, New Salem, Mass., nephew and wife; Daniel and Juliana Wessell, Binghamton; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great great nieces and great great nephews.
Irvin retired as a machinist from General Electric in 1978. He served in the US Army during World War II and received an honorable discharge in 1949. He was also a volunteer at Saint Mary's Hospital, charter member of the Amsterdam Model Airplane Association and a member of VFW Post 8690.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 28, 2002 at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam, NY. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive friends at St. Mary's Chapel Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 710 West 168th Street, New York, NY 10032-3702.

Joseph M. Riley
February 26, 2002
Joseph M. Riley Jr., 71, of Arnold Avenue, passed away Tuesday afternoon at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady, NY, following a brief illness.
Born in Amsterdam, NY, on August 19, 1930, he was the son of the late Joseph M. and Mary Black Riley Sr.
Mr. Riley received his education at St. Mary's Institute, Amsterdam, NY, and graduated from Simmons School of Mortuary Science, Syracuse, NY, in 1951.
Mr. Riley was associated with his sons as a funeral director and owner of the Riley Mortuary, Inc.
A veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Riley served as a mortuary affairs officer throughout Korea with the 392nd Graves Registration Company from 1952 to 1953.
Mr. Riley was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a member of its Holy Name Society.
Mr. Riley served on the Advisory Board of St. Mary's Hospital and the Foundation Board of St. Mary's Hospital at Amsterdam, and was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 209, BPOE Lodge 101, the Lions Club, and the Irish-American Club all of Amsterdam; the Fulton-Montgomery Funeral Directors Association and the American Truck Historical Society.
Mr. Riley is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Howlan Riley to whom he was married on November 17, 1951, four sons, Joseph M. Riley III and his wife, Karen, Patrick M. Riley and his wife, Dawn, Frank H. Riley and Timothy J. Riley all of Amsterdam, one daughter, Mary Beth Musco and her husband David of Albany; seven grandchildren Katie, Patrick, Dennis and Anne Riley of Amsterdam, NY; Alexandra, Aidan and Abigail Musco of Albany, NY; two step grandchildren, Karen Escobar and Michael Osborn of Monticello, NY; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock at St. Mary's Church, 156 East Main St., Amsterdam.
Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson NY.
Calling hours will be Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Riley Mortuary, Inc., 110 Division St., Amsterdam, NY.
Memorial contributions in Mr. Riley's name may be made to a charity of one's choice.
