Benedetta DiRuscio
February 27, 2002
Mrs. Benedetta DiRuscio, 89, of Arkell Hall, Canajoharie, NY passed away Wednesday evening at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam.
She was born on July 29, 1912 in Arpino, Italy the daughter of Gerardo and Nicenzia Mancini Rea. Mrs. DiRuscio moved from Italy to the United States with her family in 1920. She was educated at the St. Joseph's School in Schenectady, NY and lived there until moving to Canajoharie in 1993.
Mrs. DiRuscio was employed in the small motor's department in purchasing at General Electric in Schenectady for many years until her retirement in 1976.
She was a member of the Sts. Peter & Paul's Roman Catholic Church, Canajoharie and was a former member of our Lady of the Assumption Church, Rotterdam and the Rosary Society of the church.
She was married on July 8, 1928 to Enrico DiRuscio in Schenectady. He died on January 24, 1987. She was also predeceased by two granddaughters, Angela and Maria Paluzzi.
Survivors include a son, Henry G. DiRuscio and his wife Irene of St. Louis, MO; a daughter, MaryAnn Paluzzi and her husband Joseph of Canajoharie; four grandchildren, Jean Marie Taraba of Monroe, LA, Michael H. DiRuscio and Stephen A. DiRuscio both of St. Louis, MO, and John R. Paluzzi of Ft. Myers, FL; and two great granddaughters, Brittany and Kimberly Taraba.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at the Sts.. Peter & Paul's Roman Catholic Church, Cliff Street, Canajoharie with the Rev. William Gaffigan officiating. The burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at the SS. Cyril and Method Cemetery, Duanesburg Rd., Rt. 7, Schenectady. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 2 until 4 and 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Fund Raising Committee of Sts. Peter & Paul's Church in care of the funeral home.

Muriel E. Weaver
February 26, 2002
Muriel E. Aiken Weaver, 81, died Tuesday February 26, 2002 at the Baptist Retirement Home in Scotia. Mrs. Weaver was born September 5, 1920 in Amsterdam to the late James and Maude E. Greco Aiken. She was a hair stylist and the owner of Muriel's Beauty Shop in Amsterdam before her retirement.
Mrs. Weaver was predeceased by her husband Fillmore Weaver. Mother of Donald J. Neri of Fultonville, Kenneth R. Neri of Albany and James (Jamie) Weaver of Knoxville, TN. Sister of Emyra Estelle and Sally Rogers both of Amsterdam. Also survived by several grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a close family friend, James (Jim) Phelps.
A graveside funeral service will be held Friday March 1, 2002 at Memory's Garden Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. o'clock. Relatives and friends are invited. Their will be no calling hours at the funeral home. If desired contributions in Mrs. Weaver's memory may be made to the Baptist Retirement Home, 297 N. Ballston Avenue, Scotia, NY 12302 or the First Baptist Church, 479 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Rose Sorbero

Miss Rose Sorbero, 67, of Stella Lane, Amsterdam, NY died Wednesday evening at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady.
She was born on August 11, 1934 in Amsterdam, NY the daughter of Salvatore and Rubina Tagliaferro Sorbero. She was a lifelong Amsterdam resident and was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School.
Miss Sorbero was employed as a payroll clerk for 33 years at General Electric in Schenectady until her retirement in 1989.
She was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Auxiliary, the St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary and the G.E. Women's Club. Miss Sorbero was also a member of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam.
Miss Sorbero was predeceased by a sister, Mary Murrane.
Survivors include five brothers, Frank, Anthony, Joseph, John and Thomas Sorbero all of Amsterdam; two sisters, Lucia Nocian of Rotterdam Junction, and Carmela Brooks of Schenectady; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
Funeral services will be held at 8:15 a.m. Saturday at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:15 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam. The burial will take place in the St. Michael's Cemetery, Amsterdam. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 3 until 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the St. Judes Childrens Hospital, Memorial & Honor Program-F, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905.

Marie Barbara Ernst Overrocker
February 20, 2002
She was born in Albany, NY, July 8, 1918, the youngest daughter of parents, Marie Antoinette Frebel Ernst and Nicholas Philip Ernst. She grew up in a large, loving family with four siblings; John P. Ernst, Christine Johnson, Alvina Houghtaling and Dorothy Telasky, all now deceased. Because of her position as the youngest in the family, Mrs. Overrocker was also surrounded by her sibling's spouses and children growing up. John's wife, Bert Ernst, survives as do her nieces and nephews, Alvina White, Barbara Van Schoick, Charles Houghtaling, Billy Telasky and their spouses and families all of the Capital District area. Nieces, Gloria Johnson, Doris Schmerhorn and Virginia Burns all predeceased Mrs. Overrocker. Mrs. Burn's husband and children and their families survive as do Mrs. Schmerhorn's daughters.
Mrs. Overrocker married the late Frederick George Overrocker Jr. of Fort Johnson, NY on September 24, 1949. Mr. Overrocker died February 13, 1989.
She proudly resided in Fort Johnson, NY until five years ago when she moved to Atlanta, GA to be near her two children, Janis M. Overrocker Ph.D. and Frederick G. Overrocker III.
In Atlanta she is survived by her daughter-in-law Christine Overrocker and grandchildren Joy, Justin and Jerrod Overrocker and Lindsay Fritts. In New York, she is survived by her granddaughter Rosalynne Overrocker. Also in Fort Johnson, NY she is survived by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Georgiana Casline, her nephews, Jeffery, Alan and Jamie Casline and their wives and families survive. Her father-in-law Frederick G. Overrocker Sr. and brother-in-law Louis Casline predeceased her.
Mrs. Overrocker was educated in Albany, NY. She first worked for the Delaware and Hudson Railroad in Albany. It was a job she spoke of fondly, often referring to the "girls at the D&H" throughout her life. After marrying Mr. Overrocker and having her children, she worked as Clerk of the Union Free School District 8 in Fort Johnson, NY. Following that employment she worked as the Payroll Manager for Mohawk Sportswear, Inc. in Amsterdam for nearly 20 years. After retirement, she took on the job as clerk and tax collector of the Board of the Village of Fort Johnson. She immensely enjoyed this job as she was always most interested in the business and people of her town. While Mrs. Overrocker always worked, her true love was in being at home, caring for her husband and children. She was an excellent cook and in particular, abaker. She was an accomplished knitter and loved to do crafts and projects with the various women's groups she was part of. The Nimble Fingers of Fort Johnson furnished Mrs. Overrocker with many long standing relationships.
Mr. and Mrs. Overrocker were wonderful dancers and enjoyed many happy times with Mr. and Mrs. Louis Casline, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Snyder and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Knapp. In later years, Mrs. Overrocker was an active member of the Sir William Johnson Senior Citizens. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Amsterdam, NY after having raised her children at Grace Methodist in Fort Johnson, NY.
Mrs. Overrocker died February 20, 2002 in Atlanta, Georgia near the children and grandchildren that she had loved and cared for so well. We are grateful for her life and gifts. She will be buried on Monday, March 4, 2002. The service will be held at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY at 12 noon. The family will receive visitors one hour before the service. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery immediately following. If a remembrance is desired please think of the Fort Johnson Volunteer Fire Company, Fort Johnson Avenue, Fort Johnson, NY 12070, which had a special place in Mrs. Overrocker's heart.

Leo M. Podolec

Mr. Leo M. Podolec, 75, of McKay Rd., Amsterdam, NY, died Wednesday afternoon at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany, NY as a result of Acute Respiratory Stress Syndrome. (ARDS)
He was born March 24, 1926 in Amsterdam, NY a son of the late John and Mary Suszek Podolec. He was a graduate of the former Perth Central School Class of 1944 and always resided in the area.
During World War II, Mr. Podolec served in the Navy, aboard the USS Knight.
He was employed by the Amsterdam Fire Department for 24 years with the rank of Lieutenant before retiring. He then worked at Electro-Metrics until his final retirement.
He was a member of St. Stanislaus Church and its Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the Polish-American Veterans where he was a past commander and a member of the Polish Bowling League.
He married Helen J. Zawisza on September 17, 1949.
In addition to his wife he is survived by: four daughters: Mary Jean Barth and her husband Bob, Youngstown, Ohio, Elizabeth (Betty) Foo and husband Arthur, Rotterdam, NY, Stephanie Ossenfort and Teresa Ross, both of Amsterdam; twelve grandchildren: Eugenie, Katherine, Michael, Andrew and Thomas Barth; Teresa, Brian and Robert Foo; Matthew and Victoria Ossenfort; James and Joshua Ross; one brother, Paul Podolec, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one sister Ceil Fritz, Amsterdam, NY and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by sisters Ann Reksc and Violet Domkowski and brothers Julian and Anthony Podolec.
The funeral will be held at 8:45 Saturday morning at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church Street, followed by a Mass of Thanksgiving at 9:30 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church. Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Calling hours are 4-8 p.m. Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Church or the Felician Sisters both in care of the funeral home.

G. Edward Prussien

E. Edward (Chick) Prussien, 91, of 8 Third Avenue, Broadalbin, NY died Saturday, February 23, 2002 of a heart attack in Alexandria, VA while staying with his daughter.
Mr. Prussien, son of DeForest and Addie Prussien, was born in Amsterdam, NY on January 11, 1911. He grew up in Amsterdam and Gloversville and graduated from Amsterdam High School. He worked at the General Electric Company in Schenectady in the field of facilities management from 1941 to 1973, and has been retired since that time.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Charlotte Davis Prussien; step brothers, James Reedy of Galway and Charles Reedy of Elmira; a stepsister, Joan Genovese of Horseheads, and daughter, Cheryl Fitzgerald of Alexandria, VA.

Caroline Smith
March 2, 2002
Caroline M. Smith, R.N., 82, of Smith Road, Town of Perth, passed away at home early Saturday morning.
Born Jan. 12, 1920 in Schenectady, she was the daughter of Herbert and Louise Ahnert Mildern. She had lived in this area since 1974 after moving from Fayetteville. She was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School class of 1938 and the Amsterdam City Hospital School of Nursing class of 1941. She also attended Columbia University.
Mrs. Smith was employed as a registered nurse for Amsterdam Memorial Hospital, retiring a number of years ago.
She was a member of the Broadalbin Presbyterian Church and a member of the SYL Class of the church. She was a member of Art-Wel Chapter 208 Order of the Eastern Star, Perth Seniors, Amsterdam Memorial Hospital Alumni Association and a former member of the Trinity Guild. Mrs. Smith enjoyed painting with the group at the Walter Elwood Museum.
Caroline was married on Aug. 2, 1947 to William S. Smith, who passed away on Dec. 15, 1973.
She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Warren and her husband, Michael, of Hornell; her son, Wayne Smith and his wife, Pamela Sweeney, of San Rafael, Calif.; three sisters, Frances Nassel of Amsterdam, Ruth Armitage of Galway and Janet Gray of Durham, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Randolph Warren, Rachel Greelish, Richard Warren, Robert Warren, Elizabeth Lowgren, Alexander Woodie and Jessica Smith; four great-grandchildren, Philliup Warren, Samantha Warren, Delaney Greelish and Samuel Warren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Smith was predeceased by three brothers, Alford, Herbert and Richard Mildern.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, with the Rev. Paul Moyer officiating. Burial will take place in Perth Cemetery.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the William S. Smith Scholarship Fund, Attn: Anne Richards c/o Johnson School at Cornell University, 110 Sage Hall, Ithaca, 14853; the Mountain Valley Hospice or to the Presbyterian Church of Broadalbin.

Mary Ann Macaluso Thatcher

Mary Ann Macaluso Thatcher, 59, of Forbes Street, Amsterdam, passed away Saturday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Orange, New Jersey on April 29, 1942. She was the daughter of Leonard and Margaret Mangina Macaluso Sr. She attended Orange, NJ schools. She was a graduate of West Orange High School Class of 1960. Mrs. Thatcher went on to attend North Country Community College. She resided in New Jersey most of her life and moved to Amsterdam in 1989.
She attended Calvary Assembly of God Church in Amsterdam.
She was a homemaker and was dedicated to her family.
Survivors include her partner in life, Angel Gonzales of Amsterdam; one son, Mike Macaluso and wife Kristi of Orlando , Florida; five daughters, Lori Thatcher of Amsterdam, Rebecca Ann Petrovic and husband Nikola of Midland, Michigan, Mary Elizabeth Thatcher of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Tina Angela Gonzalez of East Greenbush, NY, and Elena Gonzales of Albany, NY; seven grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces and cousins all of New Jersey.
Her best friend, Bennie "Tony" Rawls of Amsterdam, NY also survives.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY. Interment will be in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in New Jersey on Wednesday. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 1450 Western Avenue, Suite 101, Albany, NY 12203-3539.

Eleanor Thayer Grade R.N.
March 2, 2002
Eleanor Thayer Grade R.N., 81, formerly of Scotch Bush, passed away early Sunday morning at the E.L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility.
Born in Lake Placid, NY on August 17, 1920 she was a daughter of Edgar and Ann E. Galpin Thayer. She attended Lake Placid Schools. She has lived in the Amsterdam area since 1942. She was a graduate of the former Amsterdam City Hospital School of Nursing.
Mrs. Grade was a First Lieutenant serving in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps during World War II. She served in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theatres.
After the war she worked as a registered nurse at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital. She was a head nurse there for many years retiring in 1983.
She was a member of the Florida Reformed Church. She also was a member of the Amsterdam Alumni Association.
She married Earl A. Grade on September 14, 1946. He passed away on November 13, 1992. Survivors include one son, David A. Grade and his wife Mary Ann of Amsterdam; two daughters, Helen Woods of Satellite Beach, Fl and Ann Chavarria of Houston, Texas; one brother in law, George Grade of Schenectady, NY; one sister in law, Ruth Haynes of Amsterdam, five grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Grade was predeceased by a son.
Funeral services will be be held on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam with the Rev, Derek DeJager presiding. Interment will be in the spring in Chuctanunda Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorial contributions may be made to the Florida Reformed Church, Minaville, NY.

Eva G. Haver

Eva G. Haver, 98, of Montgomery Meadows, Amsterdam, died Wednesday, February 27, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam.
She was born September 8, 1903 in Schenectady, NY the daughter of Elmer and Adelaide Pickett Fitzgerald.
She had resided in Cobleskill, NY since 1943 until going to the home in 1998.
Mrs. Haver had been employed as a sales clerk for 30 years at Howe Caverns, Howes Cave, NY before retiring in 1975.
She was married to Daniel J. Haver. He died in 1964.
Survivors include two daughters Mary Pangman of Gloversville, NY and Audrey Shepherd of Spring Hill, Fl. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sons: Daniel James and Raymond Gerard Haver.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, March 5 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Vincent De Church, Washington Heights, Cobleskill, NY with Rev. Thomas F. Berardi, Celebrant. There are no calling hours. Burial will be in Bramanville Cemetery, Town of Cobleskill, NY in the spring.
Arrangements are by the Robert A Guffin Funeral Home, 108 Chapel Street, Cobleskill, NY 12043.
