Mary Ann (Macaluso) Thatcher
March 2, 2002
Mary Ann (Macaluso) Thatcher, 59, of Forbes Street, Amsterdam, passed away Saturday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Orange, New Jersey on April 29, 1942. She was the daughter of Leonard and Margaret (Mangina) Macaluso Sr. She was a graduate of West Orange High School Class of 1960. Mrs. Thatcher went on to attend North Country Community College. She resided in New Jersey most of her life and moved to Amsterdam in 1989.
She attended Calvary Assembly of God Church in Amsterdam.
She was a homemaker and was dedicated to her family.
Survivors include her partner in life, Angel Gonzales of Amsterdam; one son, Mike Macaluso and wife Kristi of Orlando, Florida; five daughters, Lori Thatcher of Amsterdam, Rebecca Ann Petrovic and husband Nikola of Midland, Michigan, Mary Elizabeth Thatcher of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Tina Angela Gonzalez of East Greenbush, NY, and Elena Gonzales of Albany, NY; seven grandchildren, aunts uncles , nieces and cousins all of New Jersey.
Her best friend, Bennie "Tony" Rawls of Amsterdam, NY also survives.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY. Interment will be in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in New Jersey on Wednesday. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 1450 Western Avenue, Suite 101, Albany, NY 12203-3539.

Christopher Donald Ripley
March 1, 2002
Christopher Donald Ripley, 29, of Ripley Road, Amsterdam, passed away Friday at his home.
Born in Amsterdam on June 7, 1972 he is the son of W. Donald and Mary Jane (Nordby) Ripley. He was a lifelong area resident and attended Fonda-Fultonville Schools. He attended high school at the former Bishop Scully High School in Amsterdam. He was an early admission student his senior year at Fulton-Montgomery Community College where he was an Honor Student. He graduated from FMCC with an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts. He later attended SUNY Morrisville and received an Associates Degree in Applied Science. He was also a Graduate of Siena College where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Economics.
Mr. Ripley was pursuing a career in finance. He earned his licenses in Insurance and Brokering.
He was a member of the Village Bible Church in Fonda and was a professional wrestling enthusiast.
He is the beloved son of W. Donald and Mary Jane Ripley of Amsterdam. One loving brother Michael W. Ripley and sister-in-law to be Brianne M. Francolini of Albany. He is the beloved uncle of Jack Ripley of Albany. He is the cherished grandson of Carl A. Nordby who survives and Patricia M. Nordby who passed away in 1971. His paternal grandparents are William and Mary Ripley of Amsterdam who also survive. Great aunts, great uncles, aunts, uncles and cousins also survive along with many friends.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. A Memorial service to celebrate Christopher's life will he held at a later date where friends and family are welcome to attend. Burial is also private. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association of the Capital District, 50 Colvin Avenue, Albany, NY.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main Street, Fultonville, NY 12072.

Eleanor Thayer Grade R.N.
March 2, 2002
Eleanor Thayer Grade R.N., 81, formerly of Scotch Bush, passed away early Saturday morning at the E.L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility.
Born in Lake Placid, NY on August 17, 1920 she was a daughter of Edgar and Ann E. Galpin Thayer. She attended Lake Placid Schools. She has lived in the Amsterdam area since 1942. She was a graduate of the former Amsterdam City Hospital School of Nursing.
Mrs. Grade was a First Lieutenant serving in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps during World War II. She served in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theatres.
After the war she worked as a registered nurse at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital. She was a head nurse there for many years retiring in 1983.
She was a member of the Florida Reformed Church. She also was a member of the Amsterdam Alumni Association.
She married Earl A. Grade on September 14, 1946. He passed away on November 13, 1992. Survivors include one son, David A. Grade and his wife Mary Ann of Amsterdam; two daughters, Helen Woods of Satellite Beach, Fl and Ann Chavarria of Houston, Texas; one brother in law, George Grade of Schenectady, NY; one sister in law, Ruth Haynes of Amsterdam, five grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Grade was predeceased by a son.
Funeral services will be be held on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam with the Rev, Derek DeJager presiding. Interment will be in the spring in Chuctanunda Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorial contributions may be made to the Florida Reformed Church, Minaville, NY.

Zola O. Yacobucci
March 3, 2002
Zola O. Yacobucci, 86, formerly of Sprakers Road in Sprakers, NY, passed away Sunday morning at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.
Born in Rome, NY on July 7, 1915 a daughter of Ralph E. and Beatrice Frenette Ouderkirk, Sr. She was a lifelong area resident and attended Canajoharie, NY schools.
Mrs. Yacobucci was a Justice of the Peace in the Town of Root for several years. She designed the labels of the baby food jars for Beech-Nut Foods. She ran operation Sky Watch in the Mohawk Valley during the 1950s. She also was a member of the Ladies Aide Society of Sprakers.
She was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church in Sparkers, NY.
She married Fred J. Yacobucci July 7, 1934. He passed away on December 26, 1962.
Survivors include three sons, David A. Yacobucci of Sprakers, NY; Paul A. Yacobucci of Fayetteville, NC, James A. Yacobucci of Hull, Mass; three daughters, Sonya L. Aird and Karen F. Garren of Sprakers, NY and Elizabeth A. Snyder of Canajoharie, NY; sixteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
She was predeceased by a son Neil A. Yacobucci on November 18, 1956.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego Street, Canajoharie. Interment is in Fort Plain Cemetery in the spring. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Autistic Children's Society or to the Fort Plain Lion's Club both c/o the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, Inc.

Mary Pauline Lepore Synarski
March 4, 2002
Mary Pauline Lepore Synarski, 84, formerly of Mason Avenue, Amsterdam, passed away Monday afternoon at the Baptist Nursing Center in Scotia with her family at her side.
Born in Poughkeepsie on April 10, 1917 a daughter of the late Bernardo and Michelina Riccio Lepore, she lived in Schenectady for a time before moving to Amsterdam. Mary was employed by Mohawk Carpet Mills and Esquire Novelty Co. before she retired in 1966.
Her family meant everything to her and throughout her life, she loved music, dancing and anything "Italian" Mary was particularly proud of her homemade breads and pasta sauce. She enjoyed caring for her home, her castle.
Her beloved husband, Arnold Synarski, whom she married on April 8, 1945, preceded her in death on May 17, 1979. She was also predeceased by her brother, Dominick Lepore and her aunt, Angelina Aldi, who was like a mother to her.
She leaves her loving daughter Anita M. and her husband Alfred O. Haugen of Glenville; and her special cousins; Filomena and Sophie Riccio, John and Evelyn Riccio, Michael and Rosalie Riccio, Susan Riccio and Alberta Riccio all of Amsterdam.
Services are Thursday at 8:15 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home. Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Church .Fr. Lawrence J. Decker, celebrant. Interment is in St. John's Cemetery, Schenectady. Calling hours are Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Those who wish to remember Mary, may make a contribution to the Baptist Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, or the Montgomery County SPCA.

Phyllis Bahn Mead RN
March 2, 2002
Phyllis Bahn Mead, RN, 72, Riverview Road, Rexford, NY, died Saturday afternoon at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady after being stricken at home early that morning. She was born February 23, 1930 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Selma Bernhardt Bahn.
Phyllis was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School. She attended Syracuse University on a scholarship and later on a recommendation, transferred to St. Lukes Hospital School of Nursing in New York City where she received her diploma in nursing. She worked as a professional registered nurse in obstetrics at St. Lukes Hospital, NYC, City Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, NY. She received multiple medical awards in the nursing field. Phyllis was instrumental in establishing Mead Animal Hospital of Latham, NY, later, renamed Capitaland Animal Hospital, Inc. with her husband Dr. Warren Mead until his retirement in 1994.
She is survived by her husband Warren W. Mead, D.V.M. whom she married June 7, 1952; two sons, Roger D. Mead and Mark A. Mead both of Rexford, NY; two daughters, Nancy Carlson of Schenectady, NY and Karen L. Pyle of Tucson, AZ. Phyllis also was blessed with three grandchildren; Ronald David Mead of Lincohnton, NC and Ryan David Pyle and Lauren Andrea Pyle of Tucson, AZ. She was predeceased by two children; David Jeffrey Mead who died 1961 and Sally Anne Mead who died 1991.
Phyllis had many interests. She was active is selecting and breeding National Champion Morgan Horses at her family breeding farm Riverwinds of Rexford. Her other talents included growing exotic orchids, needlepoint, stitchery and gourmet cooking.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam with the Rev. RW Williams officiating. Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam. Calling hours with a Candle Legacy Ceremony will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to an Animal Rescue Charity of your choice or to your local ASPCA.

Brother Sixtus Morrone O.F.M.
March 3, 2002
Brother Sixtus Morrone O.F.M. died Sunday morning, March 3, 2002 at Cabrini Hospital in New York City after a short illness.
He was the son of the late Sisto and Angeline Morrone. He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and John (Angela) Morrone.
He is survived by his brother Roland Morrone and his wife Esther; nieces and nephews, John (Diane) Morrone, Lorraine Suliveres, Christine Morrone (Jerry), William (Pamela) Morrone and Lisa Van Deusen (Lee). He is also survived by several cousins, great nieces and nephews.
Brother Morrone was born October 2, 1919, in Amsterdam.
He was a veteran of WW II, having served in England, France and Germany. After he was discharged he worked at the U.S. Navy Depot.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society of Mount Carmel Church.
In 1957 he joined the Franciscan Order as a brother. He was assigned to the Mission Office in New York City.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday at St. Anthony's Church, New York City. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, New York City.
A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, March 9, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Amsterdam.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Franciscan Mission c/o Brother Paschal O.F.M., 125 Thompson Street, New York, NY 10012 or to a charity of one's choice.

Marguerite L. Sampson
March 18, 2002
Mrs. Marguerite L. Sampson, 75, formerly of Glen Avenue, Amsterdam died Monday evening at Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility where she had been a resident.
She was born on May 8, 1926 in Johnstown, NY the daughter of Alfred Elizabeth Warner Shaw. She was a lifelong area resident and attended Schenectady City schools.
Mrs. Sampson was a member of the United Methodist Church, Amsterdam. She was a homemaker.
She was married on August 5, 1950 to Cletus "Whitey" Sampson. He died on August 13, 1997.
Survivors include two sons, Gerald E. Sampson, Sr. of Fort Johnson and Christian C. Sampson of Amsterdam; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010. The burial will take place in the Union Mills Cemetery, Broadalbin in the spring. Calling hours will be Wednesday evening 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility, 50 Rt. 30 North, Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Kathryn M. Dean
March 18, 2002
Kathryn M. Dean, 89, formerly of Glastonbury, CT, and Montgomery Meadows Residential Health Care Facility, Amsterdam, NY, passed away Monday morning after a brief illness.
Born in Amsterdam, NY, on October 12, 1912, she was a daughter of John and Anna Radoslowitsch Picinich.
Mrs. Dean was a graduate of St. Mary's Institute and the Amsterdam School Of Commerce, both of this city.
Mrs. Dean was employed in the family business, Marilyn's Hat Shop in Amsterdam, until moving to Glastonbury, CT, She returned to Amsterdam in 2001.
Mrs. Dean was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Amsterdam.
Her husband Albert Dean to whom she was married on August 19, 1954, died December 26, 1997.
Mrs. Dean is survived by her stepchildren, Barbara Dean and her husband Louis of Glastonbury, CT and John Dean and his wife Mary of Berlin, NH; nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews also survive. Mrs. Dean was predeceased by one stepson Russell Dean, six sisters and two brothers.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday morning at 10:30 o'clock at the Riley Mortuary, Inc. 110 Division St., Amsterdam, followed at 11:00 o'clock by a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church, 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam.
Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson, NY.
A calling hour prior to the funeral, will be from 9:30 to 10:30 at the mortuary.
Memorial contributions in Mrs. Dean's name may be made to the Foundation at St. Mary's Hospital, 422 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY, 12010.

Silvano Giuliani
March 18, 2002
Silvano Giuliani, 76, former resident of New Port Richey, Florida and Amsterdam, New York died on Monday morning at his daughter's home after a short illness.
Mr. Giuliani was born in Sezze, Latina, Italy.
He worked in Australia and Canada before settling in Amsterdam, NY in 1960. He worked for Laborers Local Union 157, working road construction in Amsterdam before moving to Florida in 1987.
His wife Philomena Visconti Giuliani died in 1964.
He is survived by his daughter, Loreta Fusella and her husband Dr. Joseph Fusella of Niskayuna. Grandfather of Nicholas and Michael Fusella. Brother of Anna DiCocco of Velletre, Roma, Italy, Dandina Giuliani of Sezze, Scalla, Italy, Angela Fanella and Giusepina Santoro both of Windsor, Ont. Canada and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a prayer service on Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union Street.
A calling hour will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning for those who wish to call. Memorial contributions may be made in Silvano's memory to Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union Street, Schenectady, NY 12308. Interment to follow in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna.

"Ethel" Raffaela Pirfo Tessitore
March 17, 2002
"Ethel" Raffaela Pirfo Tessitore, 81, of Carmichael Street, Amsterdam, passed away early Sunday morning at Mount Loretto Nursing Home after a long illness.
Born in Amsterdam on June 22, 1920 a daughter of Oreste and Angelina Tambasco Tessitore. She was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools. Mrs. Tessitore was first employed for General Electric during World War II and later worked for many years at Fownes Brothers as a glove maker in Amsterdam before retiring in 1982.
She was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Santa Sofia Society and former Convent Auxiliary of St. Michael's Church. She was an avid bowler and at one time was in many leagues in Amsterdam.
Mrs. Tessitore married Louis Tessitore. He passed away on July 4, 1980.
Survivors include: one brother, Aniello "Dan" Pirfo of Amsterdam; four nieces, Angela Pirfo of Amsterdam, Sally Jo Pirfo of New Orleans, LA, Maria Pirfo and Joanne Pirfo of Amsterdam; one nephew, Attorney Oreste Pirfo of Washington, DC, one grand nephew, Danny Pirfo of Washington, DC; several cousins also survive.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Michelina Nicotera and Josephine Pirfo and one brother Joseph F. Pirfo.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday at 8:15 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church. Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. Calling hours are tonight (Monday) from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. The Santa Sofia Society will meet tonight at 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Loretto Home, RD#3, Swart Hill Rd., Amsterdam, NY 12010.
