Esther Siegel Hoffman
April 21, 2002
Esther Siegel Hoffman, age 86, of the Beverwyck Community on Autumn Drive in Slingerlands, NY died Sunday evening April 21, 2002 at her residence. Mrs. Hoffman was born in Amsterdam, NY and resided in Albany for many years. She was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast and at the age of 12 Esther was the only girl who caddied at the golf course. She wanted to learn more about golf and at the same time earn some pocket money. She developed a lifelong love for golf.
At an early age, Esther's desire to be more involved in something greater than herself led her to put on plays to raise money for the victims of the devastating Mississippi floods in the late 1920's. During the time she also rescued two swimmers from drowning in Sacandaga Lake. By the time Esther went away to Keuka College in the Finger Lakes District of New York, she was an accomplished sportswoman and musician, earning seven varsity letters in college, and playing three musical instruments. She also won prizes in literature and language, all while waiting on tables in the college dining hall at Keuka. The prolonged depression forced Esther to transfer to Teacher's College of Albany where she completed a Bachelor's degree in History and Latin in 1937, and continued on to receive a Master's degree in Arts and Education in 1940.
Esther's excellence in sports led naturally to her working in summer camps in the Adirondacks, where she taught athletic skills to many youngsters. There she met the director of the camp, Harold "Butch" Hoffman, when he was playing taps at the evening flag ceremony. Harold was also very athletic, having been on the Cornell University football team, as well as holding the New York State 100 yard-dash speed record. She married Harold Hoffman in 1937. Mr. Hoffman was a promising Albany accountant.
Immediately after receiving her Master's degree in 1940, Esther taught history, Latin, and the philosophy of education at the Teacher's College of Albany. Following her daughter Barbara's arrival, Esther began her volunteer work, notably with the Hudson Valley Girl Scouts' Council from 1946 to the present, and later with the American Red Cross, from 1957 to the present. With her sunny and positive attitude, Esther became president of the Hudson Valley Girl Scout Council several times throughout the years, and was on the Girl Scouts' National Regional Committee from 1962 to 1977. Esther and Barbara had many bonding experiences with activities in the local Girl Scout troop and camp activities, and at National Girl Scout Round-Ups throughout the country. With Esther's love for the outdoor and sports, she initiated many new activities for the Girl Scout Troops, which have become elemental for them. Throughout the years, Esther was a staunch supporter of Harold's volunteer activities, which included the Boy Scouts.
Simultaneously, Esther was deeply involved with the Red Cross. From 1968 to 1976, she was the Chairman of Volunteers for the Albany Red Cross Chapter. She next assumed the Chairmanship of the Albany Chapter for three years. Because of her experience, the following six years saw Esther traveling throughout the country as a Red Cross National Consultant for planning. From 1980 to 1990, Governor Mario Cuomo appointed Mrs. Hoffman as the public representative on the New York State Board of Nursing. To the year 2000, she continued to serve on the Board as a Member at Large.
In 1989, Mayor Erastus Corning and the New York State Legislature proclaimed March 7th Esther Hoffman Day for the City of Albany and the State of New York. Her numerous honors include: Community Service Awards for the Red Cross, Girl Scouts of America, Masonic Lodge, Kiwanis Club, Keuka College, Four Chaplains Award of the City of Albany, Jewish War Veterans, Albany PTA and the YMCA; and the Dedicated Alumni Award, SUNYA. Since 1978, Esther has been an active member of Zonta International, through the Zonta Club of Albany.
Esther's lifelong involvement in volunteer activities continued to this day. In 1997 she played a pivotal role as a founding member of the Voluntary Action Center where she coordinated all volunteer activities in the tri-city area. In 1998 she organized the Retired Senior Volunteer Program for Albany. Esther chaired the United Service Effort of Albany, and served on the Council of Community Services for the United Way. In her most recent volunteer effort, she worked in the Inter Generational Program in the Guilderland kindergarten. Esther continued her golfing until recently.
Esther Hoffman was intelligent, kind and gentle. She was a woman of great wisdom who was devoted to her family, her faith and service to others. Esther spent her entire life helping others.
She was married to Harold Hoffman until his passing in 1989. She is survived by her daughter Barbara Mow and her husband Dr. Van Mow of Briarcliff Manor, New York and two grandsons, Jonathan and his wife Diana and Kevin Mow. She also leaves her twin great grandchildren Rachael and Alexander and innumerable cousins, nieces and nephews throughout the United States.
Services were held on Tuesday at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Avenue, Albany. Interment was in the Temple Israel Cemetery in Guilderland, NY. The period of mourning will be observed at the Hoffman residence, 40 Autumn Drive, Slingerlands, NY on Wednesday from 2-5 pm commencing again at 7:00 pm, on Thursday from 2-5 pm commencing again at 7:00 pm and on Friday from 2-5 pm.
