Catherine P. Cline, 96, an Amsterdam resident for many years, passed away Monday noon at the Crosslands Community in Kennett Penn. after a brief illness. She lived in Burtonsville for a time before entering the facility last year.
Born in Amsterdam on November 2, 1906, she was the daughter of James R. and Kate Peckham Cline. Catherine was the last surviving child, her siblings James M., John H. and Marion L. Cline all predeceased her.
Catherine was employed as a secretary for the Amsterdam Board of Education before she retired in 1961. Following her retirement she was very active as a member of the Amsterdam Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was lifelong member of the United Methodist Church.
Catherine is mourned by the families of Eleanor L. Currie of Burtonsville, NY; Susan E. Currie of Paoli, PA., James R. Currie of Bristol, PA, Tom P. Currie of Columbus, OH; David G. Currie of Euclid, OH; Gladys Bania of Johnstown, NY; and Robert Cline of Gloversville. Many additional cousins and a host of friends also survive.
A service will take place on Saturday at 11:00 am at the United Methodist Church, Golf Course Rd., Amsterdam. The Rev. Cal Briggs-Harris officiating. Interment is in Esperance Cemetery later in the spring. There will be no calling hours, and memorials may be made to the Ayres Memorial Animal shelter, 133 Hilltop Road, Sprakers, NY 12166, or the United Methodist Church, Golf Course Rd., Amsterdam, NY 12010.
The family has entrusted the arrangements to the care of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam.
Olga Mattioli
March 27, 2003
Olga Antonick Mattioli, 77, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2003 at her home in Glenville following a short illness.
Olga was born in Brooklyn on April 6, 1925, a daughter to the late Peter and Marie Rapak Antonick. Mrs. Mattioli was a dedicated housewife to her entire family and husband of 61 years, Orlando Mattioli. She resided most of her life in Rotterdam. Olga was a longtime communicant of St. Margaret of Cortona Church in Rotterdam Junction.
Survivors include her husband, Orlando Mattioli, whom she married on August 6, 1941; their children, Terry Mattioli and his wife, Linda of Paradise Valley, Ariz, Carolyn Meyer of the Village of Colonie and Peter Mattioli of Utica. Sister of Theresa Polichetti of Coram, L.I., Alex and his wife, Jean Antonick of Massapequa, L.I., Michael Antonick of Monroe, Nadia and Dominick Galluzzo of the Bronx and Frank and Bernie Antonick of New York City. Grandmother of Lisa Mattioli Katz and her husband, Dr. Anthony Katz, Daniel and Mary Mattioli, all of Scottsdale, Ariz., Denise Barbera Ramsay and her husband Rae Ramsay, Joseph Barbera, all of Plano, Texas, Lonna BarberaTocco and her husbandGary Tocco of New Albany, MS, Eddie Meyer at Binghamton University, Binghamton. Great-grandmother of Arianna Barbera, Alyssa Mattioli, Anthony Mattioli, Abigail Kacensky. Sister-in-law of Helen and Stephen Sagonas of Sicklerville, N.J., Elizabeth Dean of Rotterdam Junction, Tom Esposito of Lodi, N.J. and Frank Mattioli of Palm Coast, Fla. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Services Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. from the N. Rossi and Sons Funeral Home, Union at N. Jay Streets, Schenectady, at 9 a.m. at St. Margaret of Cortona Church in Rotterdam Junction, when aMass will be celebtrated.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the N. Rossi and Sons Funeral Home Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m.
Interment will follow in Sts. Cyril and Method Cemetery, Rotterdam.
Memorial contributions may be made in Olga's name to the American Cancer Society.
Cecelia B. Voght

Mrs. Cecelia B. Voght, 95, of The Martin Luther Home, Clinton, NY, formerly of Canajoharie died Sunday, March 30, 2003 at St. Luke's Hospital in Utica, NY after a long illness.
She was born in Currytown, NY on September 15, 1907 the daughter of Homer and Ada Colburn Buddles.
Mrs. Voght graduated from Canajoharie High School, Class of 1926.
Mrs. Voght was employed at Beech-Nut in Canajoharie working in various capacities including keypunch operator and worked in the accounting department for 19 years. She retired September 9, 1969, after 43 years of service.
She has been a resident of The Martin Luther Home since 1996 and had resided most of her life in Canajoharie.
Mrs. Voght was a member of St. John's & St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Canajoharie.
She was married to Hugo E. Voght on August 10, 1946 in Geneva, NY, he died October 11, 1992.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews; one sister-in-law, Helena Elworthy of Canajoharie, NY; and several grand nieces and grand nephews and several great grand nieces and great grand nephews.
Graveside services will be held at the Canajoharie Falls Cemetery at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman and Rev. Gail Wolling co-officating, at a later date and will be announced.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Arrangements are by Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie.
Elias Shapnek
March 29, 2003
Elias Shapnek, 82, of Glenville died Saturday, March 29, 2003 at the Baptist Health and Rehabilitation Center, Scotia following a long illness.
Born on August 31, 1920 in Lackawanna, NY he was the son of Michael and Aniela Shupienik. His early years were spent in Amsterdam and Galway graduating from Galway High School's class of '37, subsequently serving in the U.S. Army-Air Corp. from '41-'46.
He was married on November 6, 1943 to the former Isabel M. Flynn and following the war graduated from Siena College (1953) and from Albany Law Law School with a Juris Doctorate Degree in 1956. Mr. Shapnek was employed by the State of New York as an attorney from 1961-1983, retiring from the Department of Mental Hygiene in that year.
He worked as a volunteer for the NYS Legislative Council as a representative, serving on the task force for AARP. He was a former district #6 committeeman in 1987. He was a longtime communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Scotia.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 59 plus years Isabel M. Shapnek; daughters, Sharyl, and her husband Wayne Duprey; Nancy, and her husband Walter Lytwyn; Joy, and her husband Patrick Egan; a brother, Walter M. Shapnek of Glenville; grandchildren Daniel Duprey and his wife Katina and Marisa Egan. He is survived by his great granddaughter Isabella Duprey as well as several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, April 4 at 9:00 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, First Street, Scotia where relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
Calling hours will be Thursday at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, from 4:00-6:00p.m.
Interment will follow church services on Friday at the Gerald B.H. Solomon National Cemetery, Duell Road, Schuylerville.
Contributions, if you wish, may be made in memory of Elias Shapnek to a charity of your choice.

Richard Lewis Klingbeil

Richard Lewis Klingbeil, 68, of Prospect Street, Johnstown was stricken Saturday, March 29, 2003 in Fredericksburg, VA while visiting his son.
He was born March 3, 1935 in Tribes Hill, NY the son of Raymond and Edna Stevens Klingbeil.
Mr. Klingbeil served in the US Army from 1958-1960 after graduating from Fonda Fultonville Schools.
He worked as an iron worker for Local #12 Steel Workers Union.
Mr. Klingbeil was of the Protestant faith.
He was a member of the Johnstown Moose Lodge.
He married Carol VanSlyke on March 31, 1961.
Mr. Klingbeil is survived by his wife Carol VanSlyke Klingbeil of Johnstown; two sons, Richard L. Klingbeil Jr. and his wife Jennifer and children, Holly, Richard III, Brian and Jeremy of Fredericksburg, VA and Mark Klingbeil and wife Barbara and children Matthew and Megan of Saratoga, NY; two daughters, Lynn and her husband Claude Bennett with children Gordan and Mackenzie of Naples, FL and Laurie and her husband Tim Zalig with children Mark and Billy of Okinawa; four sisters, Marion Johnes of Randall, Norma Saullo of Amsterdam, Leda Walsh of Randall and Linda Thomas of Amsterdam; three brothers, Melvin Klingbeil of Texas; Robert Klingbeil and Raymond Klingbeil of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Klingbeil is also survived by a special nephew Jeff Klingbeil and many other nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister Lois Darrow and a brother Donald Klingbeil.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 North Melcher Street, Johnstown with the Rev. R.W. Williams, Chaplain of Mt. Valley Hospice, officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.
Calling hours are Wednesday from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Moose Heart.
Eleanore A. Christian
March 29, 2003
Eleanore A. Christian, 84, of Knollwood Avenue, Amsterdam, passed away Saturday morning at home, after a short illness.
Born in New York City on June 18, 1918, she was a daughter of the late James and Bertha Rische Hefferman.
Mrs. Christian graduated from Sewanhaka High School, Floral Park, NY, and in 1940 graduated from Adelphi College, Garden City, NY with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.
She was a homemaker, a trustee of the Amsterdam Free Library and taught Catechism at St. Casimir's Church, Amsterdam.
Mrs. Christian is survived by her husband of 58 years, William P. Christian to whom she was married on November 18, 1944; two sons, Dr. James H. Christian of Fairfax, VA, and Dr. Kevin D. Christian of Myrtle Beach, SC; two daughters, Arlene M. Kien of Indian Lake, NY, and Mary A. Christian of Amsterdam, NY; one sister, Margaret Quinn of Garden City, NY; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Mrs. Christian was also predeceased by a son, William J. Christian.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 9:15 a.m. at St. Casimir's Church, 260 East Main Street, Amsterdam.
Interment will be at the Gerald B. H. Solomon National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY.
There will be no calling hours.

Anthony Sinatra
March 30, 2003
Anthony Sinatra Jr., 73, of Rotterdam at rest March 30, 2003, at St. Clare's Hospital, Schenectady.
A lifelong area resident, Anthony was born in Amsterdam, the son of the late Anthony Sinatra Sr. and Gladys Ballou.
Anthony was a Sergeant in the Army serving from 1948 to 1951, and was later employed by General Electric in Schenectady for 30 years, retiring in 1993, as a winder.
Anthony was a member of Our Lady of the Assumption Church, and the G.E. Quarter Century Club.
He is the beloved husband of 44 years to Suzanne Morrow Sinatra. Beloved father of Steven (Patricia) Sinatra of Rochester. Beloved brother of Betty Dybas of Amsterdam, Ronald Sinatra of Hagaman, NY. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will begin Thursday at 8:15 a.m. at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Avenue, Rotterdam followed at 9:00 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Princetown Road, Rotterdam.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will be in the Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the National Kidney Foundation of Northeast New York Inc., 23 Computer Drive, East, Albany, NY 12205.
William Santos
February 10, 2003
Mr. William Santos, 72, of Jewett Street, Amsterdam, died Monday morning at the Albany Medical Center.
Born June 29, 1930, in Amsterdam, NY, he was the son of Emanuel and Isabelle Ramos Santos. He was a life long Amsterdam resident and a graduate of the Wilbur H. Lynch High School, class of 1948.
Mr. Santos was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War where he served at the rank of Sergeant as a truck driver, delivering supplies to the front lines.
Mr. Santos was employed as a heavy equipment operator, affiliated with Santos Construction Company in Amsterdam for over forty years, retiring in 1996.
He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 106, Albany; International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Chauffeurs, Warehouseman and Helpers of America Local 294, Albany and the Port Jackson Co-Ed Bocce League.
He attended St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam.
Mr. Santos' wife, children, and grandchildren where the love of his life, he was a very gentle and respectful man who took pride in his work. After his retirement, he enjoyed going once and awhile to the Saratoga Race Track and the Turning Stone Casino.
He was married on January 4, 1953, to his beloved, the former Nora R. Famiano.
Besides his wife he is survived by his loving family; two sons, William E. Santos and his wife Pam of Amsterdam and Peter D. Santos and his wife Jackie of Amsterdam; a daughter Karen M. Santos of Amsterdam; two brothers, Benjamin Santos of Amsterdam and Emanuel (Moose) Santos of Johnstown; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lillian and Raymond Mozel of Schenectady; six grandchildren, Joseph. Peter, Kristian, Kateri, Angela and Christina Santos; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Mr. Santos was predeceased by three brothers, Peter, Frank and Sylvester (Bebb) Santos; and a sister, Matilda Rosello.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, with the Very Rev. James Gulley officiating.
Burial will take place in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Amsterdam.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Candle Light Legacy Ceremony will be held Wednesday evening at 7:15 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the St. Jude's Children Hospital, 501 St. Judes Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the Shriners Children's Hospital, North Pine Drive, Tampa, Florida, 33612-9499.
Gretchen R. Goody
February 10, 2003
Gretchen Ruth Goody, of East Andover, New Hampshire died Monday, February 10, 2003 at home after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born October 4, 1939 in Amsterdam, NY. She was the daughter of Erwin and Gertrude (Reimer) Schroder and spent her early years in Tribes Hill, New York, graduating from Fonda-Fultonville Central School. She graduate from Mildred Elley Secretarial School with honors.
Mrs. Goody was a wonderful mother, homemaker, gardener, craftsperson as well as being a rural mail carrier for a time. She was a member of the Andover Service Club and also the Andover Congregational Church.
Gretchen was an avid outdoors person, enjoying hiking, swimming, skiing and her daily walks with family and friends alike. She nurtured many people during her lifetime and leaves a legacy of caring and loving.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, James W. Goody; five daughters, Elizabeth J. Goody of Lebanon, Maine, Kimberly A. Goody of Ryegate, Vermont, Sharon L. Goody of Rockwall, Texas, Kristina R. Choe of Gainesville, Florida and Kathryn J. Goody of Cambridge, Massachusetts; two sisters, Delores A. Goody of Rexford, New York and Marilyn J. Lane of Albuquerque, New Mexico; one brother E. Henry Schroder of Spring Lake, New Jersey; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Andover Congregational Church, 1 Chase Hill Road, East Andover, NH 03231. The Rev. John Wagner will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Andover Congregational Church or the Lake Sunapee Region Visiting Nurse Association, P.O. Box 2209, New London, NH 03257.
The Chadwick Funeral Service, New London is in charge of arrangements.
