Frederick W. "Fritz" Auspelmyer, 87, of Devendorf Road, Town of Florida, passed away Saturday at St. Mary's Hospital.
Born in the Town of Florida, NY on May 23, 1916 a son of Edward and Sophie Heitkamp Auspelmyer. He was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools.
Mr. Auspelmyer was a lifelong farmer in the area. He owned and operated his family's farm in the Town of Florida. He also worked for over 10 years at G.E. in Schenectady retiring from there in 1980.
He was a member of the Florida Reformed Church in Minaville. He also was a former Elder of the church. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of Agway, He was also a member of the Farm Bureau and the Florida Grange.
Mr. Auspelmyer served as Town of Florida Assessor for over 20 years. He was a member of the Amsterdam Lodge #84 F & A.M., and was a Shriner of the Scottish Rite.
He was an avid bowler who was involved in many bowling leagues in the area.
He was first married to Genevieve May Francisco Auspelmyer on December 22, 1937, she passed away on December 16, 1993. He was remarried to Dorothy Kaufman Rogers Auspelmyer on October 20, 1995.
In addition to his beloved wife survivors include, two sons, Alfred R. Auspelmyer and Gary F. Auspelmyer both of the Town of Florida; two daughters, Dolores M. Hebert and Katherine J. Rose-Mars both of the Town of Florida; one step son, James Rogers of Philmont, NY and a step daughter, Linda Cramer of Greenville, SC; one sister, Marie Lampkin of the Town of Florida; 14 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and two step great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Mr. Auspelmyer was predeceased by a son, William Douglas Auspelmyer on May 4, 1985. He was also predeceased by one brother, Henry Auspelmyer and two sisters, Emma Horstman and Esther Lavender.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam with the Rev. Derek DeJager presiding.
Interment is in Fairview Cemetery in Amsterdam.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
There will be a Masonic Service during visitation on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Florida Reformed Church, the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church or to Community Hospice of Amsterdam all in care of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam.
Helen F. Rhynders
August 3,2003
Helen F. Rhynders, 93, died Sunday, August 3, 2003, at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center, Guilderland.
Mrs. Rhynders was born in Albany, the daughter of the late Steven and Veronica Bohenski Skicki.
A lifelong resident of the Capital District, she wa employed by Walter Foods in Albany for many years.
Mrs. Rhynders was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Church and Rosary Society in Colonie.
Helen was an avid gardener known for her innate ability to make anything grown and flourish.
Helen was predeceased by her husband,the late Foster E. Rhynders, as well as two sisters, the late Louise Lee and Constance Weir.
Helen is survived by her two sons, Edward G. and his wife Phyllis of Colonie, Foster S. and his wife, Casandra of Tribes Hill, and a daughter, Karen L. and her husband, Raymond Neale of Colonie.
Mrs. Rhynders is also survived by her eight grandchildren, Edward, Lee Ann, Kelli, Randy, Renee, Shannon, Kim and Laura, as well as 13 great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 6, 2003, 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Colonie.
Interment at Memory's Garden, Colonie.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Mercy Life Center, 2 Mercycare Lane, Guilderland, NY, 12084.
Robert E. Wells
August 3, 2003
Robert E. Wells, 90, of Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY died August 3, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, NY following a brief illness.
He was born August 26, 1912 in West Hampton, NY a son of Earl and Mabel Wolfen Wells.
Mr. Wells was employed at Beech-Nut Company for many years, retiring in 1974.
He lived in Canajoharie for most of his life.
Mr. Wells served in the United States Army during World War II.
He was of the Protestant faith.
Mr. Wells enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting.
He married Agnes M. Small on July 11, 1942 in Smithport, PA, she died on December 15, 2000.
Survivors include two daughters, Susan Terns, Cobleskill, NY and Jeanine Sohn, Long Island, NY; three sons, Roland Wells, Schenectady, NY, Donald Wells, Simi Valley, CA, and Robert L. Wells, Canajoharie, NY; 12 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
An 11:00 a.m. funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2003 at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home,Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY with the Rev. Joyce Jennings officiating.
Burial will be in Canajoharie Falls Cemetery.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 6 at the funeral home.
Eugene Kenneth Yurkewecz

Eugene Kenneth Yurkewecz, 53, of Rexford, NY passed away on July 31, 2003. Ken was a graduate of Fonda-Fultonville Central School and SUNY at Albany. At the time of his death, he was employed by the NYS Office of Child and Family Services, Empire State College, and Siena College.
Ken was born April 1, 1950 in Amsterdam, NY and was the son of Eugene Yurkewecz of Fultonville [Glen] and the late Kaye Yurkewecz. He is survived by his wife, Pat, and his children, Erin and Matthew. He is also survived by his four sisters, Carol (Joseph) Parenti of St. Cloud, Florida, Judy (Tom) Murray of Fultonville, Cynthia (George) Doherty of Gloversville, Sharen Schnell of Columbus, Ohio and their families.
A private graveside service will be held at Maple Avenue Cemetery, Fultonville at the convenience of the immediate family. There will be no calling hours.

Dr. Harry A. Berkman
August 5, 2003
Dr. Harry A. Berkman, who practiced dentistry in Amsterdam for 42 years, died Tuesday at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam of congestive heart failure. He was 92.
Born in Greenwich, New York on October 31, 1910 and educated at Alfred University and the Tufts Dental College, "Doc" Berkman, as he was affectionately known, opened his practice of dentistry on East Main Street in Amsterdam shortly after graduating from Tufts in 1938. Except for the war years, Berkman maintained his practice until retiring at age 74. He married Ruth Frost in 1946.
Active in both professional societies and civic affairs, at one time Berkman served on the Executive Committee for 4th District Dental Society of the State of New York and was president of the FHM Dental Society. He also served as Institution Dentist for the Tryon School for Boys. Equally involved in the community at large, Berkman was a past director of the United Way in Amsterdam and a board member of the Montgomery County American Cancer Society.
One of the dwindling numbers of "the greatest generation", Berkman served with distinction as a captain of the Dental Corps in the 873rd Engineer Aviation Battalion. He spent 33 months overseas and survived the torpedoing of his ship off of Guadacanal. In recent years, Berkman took great delight in sharing the story of unexpectedly being invited to dine at the Prime Minister's home during the occupation of Japan. Berkman was a trustee of the Jewish War Veterans.
A man with many interests, Berkman was an Adirondack aficionado, avid fisherman, active tennis player, loyal Red Sox fan, accomplished skier and member of the National Ski Patrol. He was a history buff who liked nothing better than to trace our country's roots to Revolutionary War days. He enthusiastically led tours of the Fort Johnson Museum, was a local expert on Sir William Johnson and served as a dedicated member of the Montgomery County Historical Society. Also a trustee of the Jewish Historical Society of Northeastern New York. Berkman was instrumental in having the Temple of Israel in Amsterdam, where he served as president and trustee, placed on the National Register of Historic Sites. Berkman was also a director of the Temple of Israel Cemetery and a member of the Congregation Sons of Israel.
Of all his passions, Berkman's family came first and he will long be remembered as a loving husband and doting parent and grandparent who took great pride in the achievements of his family. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a wonderful raconteur who never ran out of stories, projects or pastimes to pursue vigorously.
He is survived by Ruth, his wife of 57 years; three daughters and their husbands; Karen and Alan Zaur of Montpelier, VT, Marilyn and Skip Sturman of Thetford, VT, Debbie and Gary Jakaitis of Albany, NY; six grandchildren, Isaac and Nathaniel Zaur, Jed and Cara Sturman, Leah and Daniel Jakaitis; and close friend John Orlowski.
Berkman was predeceased by his parents, Louis and Bess, and four sisters.
Funeral services will be held 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam.
Interment will be in Temple of Israel Cemetery, Cranesville.
A period of mourning will be observed at the Berkman home, 68 Romeyn Avenue, Amsterdam. The family will receive relatives and friends at home from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Sunday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Foundation of St. Mary's Hospital, 442 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
Edward L. Kay
August 5, 2003
Edward L. Kay of Saratoga Springs passed away Tuesday, August 5, 2003 at the Wesley Health Care Center. He was 91.
Mr. Kay was born on February 28,1912 in Schenectady, NY. He was the son of the late Wincenty and Anna Krajeska. They grew up in the Mount Pleasant section of Schenectady.
He served in the United States Army during WWII and participated in the Invasion of Normandy. He landed on the Utah Beach on day one and was one of the fortunate soldiers to survive the battle. Upon his return to Schenectady he took a job with General Electric as a machinist and worked there for 28 years until his retirement on January 1, 1970. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club.
Mr. Kay was married to his wife, Laura Kay, for 53 years. She died in 2001.
They lived in Broadalbin on Sacandaga Lake for 25 years before moving to Saratoga Springs in the 1980's.
He enjoyed both Saratoga Horse Racing Tracks. He was an owner of many Standard Breeds.
He is predeceased by one brother, Joseph Krajeska and three sisters; Marie, Charlotte and Ann Krajeska.
Survivors include a son Bruce Kay of Saratoga Springs and his wife Joan and a granddaughter Susannah Kay.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 9. 2003 a the Church of Saint Peter in Saratoga Springs.
Friends may call from 5:00-8:00 on Friday at the Tunison Funeral Home, 105 Lake Avenue, Saratoga Springs, NY.

Elizabeth F. Wittemeier
August 5, 2003
Mrs. Elizabeth F. Wittemeier, 88, of Tessiero Drive, Fort Johnson, passed away Tuesday afternoon at St. Mary's Hospital.
A lifelong resident of Fort Johnson, she was born on March 19, 1915, a daughter of David and Anna Wolf Whalen, she was educated locally.
For a time, she was associated with her family's business, the former Whalen's Grocery and Post Office in Fort Johnson. A homemaker, Mrs. Wittemeier was an active member at one time of the Home Bureau and also the Sir William Johnson Seniors.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Amsterdam.
Her loving family includes her husband of fifty-seven years, Arnold J. Wittemeier whom she married on July 28, 1946; her two daughters, Mary E. Maples (Richard Dutt), and Gloria J. (Lawrence) Putman all of Amsterdam; her four grandchildren, Jennifer and Steven Maples, Alicia and Evan Putman; and great grandchildren, Blake, Brock, Brittany, Victoria and Morgan; nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
An infant son, James, predeceased her.
Services are Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, the Rev. Brian Gould, officiating.
Interment is in Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill.
A calling period will begin at 12:00 noon on Saturday prior to the services.
Contributions may be made to the Fort Johnson Volunteer Fire Department, the Sir William Johnson Seniors, or the United Methodist Church all in care of the funeral home.
Edmund C. Prybycien
August 5, 2003
Edmund C. Prybycien, 91, of Church Street, Hagaman died Tuesday August 5, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness. His family was by his side.
Ed was born on February 7, 1912 in Amsterdam he was the son of Joseph and Helen Mika Prybycien. He attended Amsterdam schools and was a 1928 graduate of the Wilbur H. Lynch High School. He was a lifelong area resident.
Ed was employed by Mohasco Corporation and traveled the country as their head carpet installation instructor. He later began his own carpet installation business until his retirement in 1985.
Ed was a member and past president for the former PNL Club. He enjoyed bowling and belonged to the Senior Bowling League.
He was a member of the Church of St. John the Baptist.
He is survived by Josephine Prybycien, his loving wife of 69 years; two sons, Ron Prybycien of Doylestown, Pennsylvania and Jerry Prybycien and his wife Sue, of Downers Grove, Illinois; two granddaughters, Tracy Zalik and her husband Stan, of Memphis, Tennessee and Kelly Cardenas and her husband Gary of Geneva, Illinois; three great grandchildren, Stephanie and Christopher Zalik and Diego Cardenas; also nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 9:00 a.m. Friday at the Guzielek-Pomykaj Funeral Home, 13 Belmont Place followed at 9:30 a.m. by a Mass Christian Burial at the Church of St. John the Baptist.
Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be this afternoon (Thursday) from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the evening at the funeral home.
Donations may be made in Ed's memory to the Church of St. John the Baptist or to a charity of one's choice.
Blanche M. Haight
August 6, 2003
Mrs. Blanche M. Haight. 73. formerly of Smith Avenue, Amsterdam, currently a resident of Hillcrest Spring, Amsterdam died Wednesday at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam after a long illness.
Born on November 11, 1929 in Bombay, NY she was the daughter of Frances and Eva Turner Jock. She was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools.
Mrs. Haight was first employed in 1946 by the former Colette Manufacturing, Amsterdam until going to work in 1973 for Ward Products, Amsterdam until her retirement in 1994.
She was married on June 4, 1949 to Wilbur J. Haight. He died on February 17, 2001.
Survivors include two sons, Wayne and Dale Haight both of Amsterdam; a daughter, Darlene Elwood and her husband Bernie of Amsterdam; a brother Bernard Jock of Hagaman; a sister, Helen Nadler of Hagaman; eleven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam with the Rev. Ronald Matulewicz officiating.
Burial will take place in the Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Broadalbin Kennyetto Volunteer Fire Department or the St. Judes Children's Hospital in care of the funeral home.
