Stephania Lewandowski
September 26, 2003
Mrs. Stephania Ann Lewandowski, 89, of County Highway 107, Perth, passed away Friday afternoon at the Montgomery Meadows Residential Health Care Facility.
She was born March 6, 1914 in Amsterdam, a daughter of the late Andrew and Maryanna Wszolek Dudka. She attended St. Stanislaus School and was a 1932 graduate of Amsterdam High School. She had always lived in the area.
She was employed by Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Co., J.J. Newberry's and Colette's Manufacturing. For 26 years, she worked for Mohasco Industries in Amsterdam until retiring in 1979.
She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church, its Seniors and Rosary Society and served as its financial secretary for 17 years. She was also a former member of the Perth Democratic Club and an original member of the Phi Lamda Sorority.
Mrs. Lewandowski enjoyed travelling and gardening.
She was married to Clarence J. Lewandowski of Jan. 20, 1935. He died April 13, 1996. She was also predeceased by a brother, Stephen Dudka and a sister, Sophie Dudka.
Survivors include three sons, Clemens (Chops) Lewandowski and wife Stacia of Perth, Robert Lewandowski and wife Gay of Perth and Thomas Lewandowski and wife Teddie of Buffalo; four grandchildren, Richard Lewandowski and wife Anita of Fort Hunter, David Lewandowski of Gloversville, Chad Lewandowski and wife Angela of Perth and Alex Lewandowski and wife Kate Alaska; four great-grandchildren, Cheyenne and Cody of Fort Hunter and Olivia and Chloe of Perth; a brother, Andrew Dudka of Amsterdam; nieces; nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be held at 8:30 Tuesday morning at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church St., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church. Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Monday with the Rosary Society service at 5:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Leo S. Milonovich
September 27, 2003
Mr. Leo S. Milonovich, 94, of Langley Road, Amsterdam, died Saturday morning at his home.
Born April 11, 1909, in Amsterdam, he was the son of Petranella and Stephen Milonovich. He was a life long resident and was a graduate of the Amsterdam High School.
Mr. Milonovich over the years serviced refrigerator systems. He was employed during WWII as a machinist for General Electric, and later was employed in the construction field as a welder and laborer where he worked on the: Masina Power Dam, Hyrdo Electric System in Niagara Falls and the missile silo in Potsdam. He was last employed as a mill right at the Blue Circle Cement Company in Revina, retiring in 1985.
He was a communicant of St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam and a member of the PACE Union in Revina.
He was first married to the former Evelyn Bubniak who died who died November 7, 1984.
Mr. Milonovich was married on July 11, 1989, to the former Edna Miller who survives him. Additional survivors include five sons, Robert Milonovich of St. Johnsville, Ronald Milonovich of Broadalbin, Daniel Milonovich of Minaville, Malcolm Milonovich of Amsterdam and Michael Milonovich of Pattersonville; two daughters, Evelyn Pearo of Amsterdam and Patricia Naujeck of Oneonta; a sister, Jean Kedick of Mill Point; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 8:45 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. at the St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church, East Main Street, Amsterdam.
Burial will take place in St. John's Cemetery.,
The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Community Hospice of Amsterdam.

Albert A. Hyman
September 28, 2003
Albert A. Hyman, 85, of Golf Course Road, passed away Sunday evening at St. Mary's Hospital.
Born in Troy, NY on March 13, 1918 a son of Louis and Rose Abramson Hyman. He was educated in the city of Troy school system. He graduated from the London Polytechnic Institute in England. He was a veteran of World War II serving as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army in England. He participated in the Normandy Invasion and the Liberation of France.
He has lived in the Amsterdam area for over 60 years. Mr. Hyman first managed the former Kings Drug store in Amsterdam.
He was the co-founder of the Almor Co., he was the founder of the Almor Playtime Company and Record Giant all in Amsterdam.
He was a member of the Congregational Sons of Israel and the B'nai B'rith. He was a member an Past-President of the Jewish War Veterans and was also a member of the Amsterdam Lodge #84 F & AM for over 50 years.
Mr. Hyman received the N.Y. State Liberty Award from the State Senate; received a certificate of Merit from the French Government, and the French Medal of Honor.
He married Naomi Ruth Kupferberg Hyman on October 5, 1941.
In addition to his wife survivors include one daughter, Elaine Joyce Hyman of Maryland; one son, Bruce Martin Hyman and his wife Natalie Jean Hyman of Scotia, NY; four grandchildren, Shari Rose Hyman, Scott Jon Hyman, Kurt David Olender and Michelle Joy Olender; two great grandchildren, Emma Kate Olender and Benjamin Jacob Olender; nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam with Rabbi Ari Vernon presiding.
Interment will be in Temple of Israel Cemetery, Cranesville, NY.
A calling hour will precede the funeral service on Tuesday being at 12:30 at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Congregational Sons of Israel, 355 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010 or to a charity of one's choice.
A Period of Mourning will be observed Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Hyman residence on Golf Course Road.

Eugene L. Smith
September 30, 2003
Eugene L. Smith "Linc" age 74, of Folts Road, East Herkimer, entered into eternal rest at his home on Tuesday evening, September 30, 2003 after a long illness.
He was born on February 12, 1929 in Fort Plain, son of the late Ray Charles and Irene Dillenbeck Smith. A lifelong area resident he was raised and educated in Fort Plain. In 1946 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps serving until 1948 when he was honorably discharged. On August 2, 1952 he married the former Nellie Mead in Saint Paul's Lutheran Church, Fort Plain. They first resided in Frankfort until moving to Herkimer in 1960. For twenty years Mr. Smith owned and operated Valley Window and Floor Cleaning. For the last seven years he was employed by Oneida County Boiler Works in Utica, retiring in 2002.
He was a devoted husband and father putting his family foremost in his life. He enjoyed the outdoors and family gatherings with nine brothers and sisters on both sides of the family. He will be remembered as a hard working, fun loving and giving person. Linc has a strong belief in God and led a devoted Lutheran life. He was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Herkimer where he served on the Church Council for two terms during his forty-five years of service. He was a member of the Marine Corps League in Ilion, a former member of the Herkimer Elks Lodge #1439 and the Herkimer Kiwanis Club.
Surviving are his loving wife of fifty-one years Nell; a son and his wife, David and Cynthia Smith of Sandy, UT; two daughters and their husbands, Cynthia and Mark Knoblauch of Newark Valley, Michelle and Vincent Risi of Ilion; three brothers, Donald Smith of Fort Plain, Leonard and his wife Anita Smith of Muncy, PA, Gilbert and his wife Mary Smith of Clifton Park; six sisters and their husbands, Doris and James Trance of Albany, June and William Fisk of Fort Plain, Janet and Richard Reiger of Glen Falls, Betty and Robert Specht of Whitesboro, Rosie and Philip Utter of Glendale, AZ, Veronica and Wayne Maier of Edmeston; eight grandchildren, Christopher Knoblauch and his fiance Kimberly McGarvey, Marcus and his wife Sabrina Knoblauch, Kyle Lincoln Knoblauch, Ashley and Alexandra Smith, Ryan, Brett and JaNell Risi; a great granddaughter, Macy Eile'ann Knoblauch; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Herkimer. The Reverend Alice Moberg-Sarver, and the Reverend Norman J. Heid will officiate.
Interment will follow in Mohawk Cemetery.
The family will be present in the Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer to receive relatives and friends today (Friday) from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Mohawk Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross or the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Herkimer.
Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Rhoda Longshore Dievendorf
September 27, 2003
Rhoda Longshore Dievendorf, born October 10, 1920, to Martha and David Longshore, was called to the Lord on September 27, 2003.
Rhoda grew up in Ilion, NY but moved to Mapletown then Ames before attending Canajoharie High School. Upon completion of high school, she attended Oneonta State Teachers College on a N.Y. State Regents Scholarship. Her teaching career, which would span forty years, began as a kindergarten teacher in St. Johnsville. In June of 1943, she answered the call to serve and joined the United States Marine Corps. She went to basic training in New River, North Carolina, and served her time in the corps in San Diego, CA. Honorably discharged in December of 1945, Rhoda returned to N.Y. and her teaching career as a kindergarten teacher in Gloversville. After three years in Gloversville, she moved to Sharon Springs Elementary where she taught from 1950 until 1962. Rhoda finished her career at Canajoharie from 1962 until retirement in 1979.
Rhoda wed Anson Dievendorf on her birthday, 1946. On August 4, 1948, Rhoda gave birth to their only child, daughter Mary Ann Dievendorf.
Rhoda was a woman of many interests. She was a bonified "Cowgirl" who enjoyed roping and riding. She was even the lead singer for her country western band, "Bucky and her Buckaroos". Rhoda was an extremely well educated woman. She earned a Masters Degree in Arts from Syracuse University and continued her graduate work abroad, studying at the University of Rome, Vienna, and Ecole Militaire in Paris. Her expansive studies were matched only by her extensive travels around the globe, a passion she shared with family and friends throughout her lifetime. Rhoda was very active in the New York State Retired Teachers Association, the Canajoharie Colonial Club, and in the Reformed Church of Canajoharie where she combined her strong faith with her teaching skills and spent a period of time as the church's Sunday School Superintendent.
Rhoda is survived by her grandchildren, Tom and David Bickerstaff, and by many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 5, 2003 at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317.
Burial will take place in the Fort Plain Cemetery.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, Rhoda's family asks that contributions be made to the Reformed Church of Canajoharie or the Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service.

Martha E. Kuk

Mrs. Martha E. Kuk, 87, formerly of Church Street, Amsterdam, died Thursday morning at Hillcrest Spring, Market Street, Amsterdam.
Arrangements are by the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel, 13 Belmont Place, are incomplete and will be announced.

Robert Bronk
October 3, 2003
Robert Bronk, 68, of Washington Street, Fort Plain, passed away early this morning at his home.
Arrangements under the direction of the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, are incomplete.

Bernice Leszczynski
October 2, 2003
Mrs. Bernice Leszczynski, 97, formerly of Church Street, Amsterdam died Thursday morning at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Healthcare Facility.
Born in Amsterdam she was the daughter of Frank and Clementine Przybylowski. Litwa She was educated in local schools and was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Leszczynski was at one time employed by the Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Mills and later by M. Lurie Co. She subsequently worked for the former Big N until retiring. She was a member of the Church of Saint John the Baptist and it's Ladies' Rosary Society.
Mrs. Leszczynski was married to Peter John Leszczynski for 61 years. They were married on May 24, 1930. He died on September 30, 1991.
She is survived by two sons, Dr. Thomas P. Lacey and his wife, Beverly of Ludlow, Vermont and Raymond F. Leszczynski and his wife, Diane of Auburn, New York; one sister, Violet Zelonka of Amsterdam; seven grandchildren, Kevin Lacey of Great Fall, Montana, Kimberly Miller of Beaver Creek, Ohio, Kristen Snow of Salt Lake City, Utah, Kirk Leszczynski, Jamie Leszczynski, Jason Leszczynski and Justin Leszczynski all of Auburn; three great grandchildren, Kate Miller, Darby Lacey and Jack Miller; nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is predeceased by one sister, Winifred Adamski.
Funeral services will be held 9;00 a.m. Friday at the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel, 13 Belmont Place, followed at 9:30 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of Saint John the Baptist.
Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Thursday afternoon from 4:00 to 8:00p.m. in the evening at the funeral chapel.
Donations may be made in Mrs. Leszczynski memory to the Church of Saint John the Baptist or to Meals on Wheels, 17 Carmen Court, Palatine Bridge, NY 13428.

Timothy J. VanAlstine
October 4, 2003
Mr. Timothy J. VanAlstine, 57, of Darge Dr., Apopka, Florida, (formerly of Ames, NY) died on Saturday, October 4, 2003 at Florida Central Regional Hospital after a long illness.
Mr. VanAlstine was born on August 27, 1946 in Amsterdam, New York the son of Harold and Mary C. Conrad VanAlstine.
Mr. VanAlstine was a graduate of Canajoharie High School, Class of 1964. While in high school, he played in a band called the Diabolos which went on to represent Montgomery County at the World Fair in New York City.
Mr. VanAlstine was most recently the owner and operator of the Black Gold Seal Coat in Florida.
Previously, he was employed at the former Ray Kimball Electric in Nelliston, NY and Ames Building Supplies as a electrician.
Mr. VanAlstine was a resident of Florida since 1976, previously living in Canajoharie, NY. He was Veteran of Viet Nam serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1964-1968 and was of the Protestant Faith.
He was a member of the VFW Post #2093, the American Legion Post #19 and the Shriner "Babia Temple" all of Orlando, Florida. He was also a member of F.A.A.M Hamilton Lodge #79 in Canajoharie, NY.
He was a avid painter of landscapes and enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved animals.
He married the former Karen Jeanne Smith of Sprout Brook, on October 1, 1966 in Fort Plain, NY.
Survivors include his wife Karen J. VanAlstine of Apopka, FL; his mother, Mary C. VanAlstine of Canajoharie, NY; two sons, James P. VanAlstine and his wife, SSG. Lani (Ferrell) of Apopka, FL, and 1st Lt. Timothy J. VanAlstine and his wife, Beth (Hull) of Longwood, FL and stationed in Germany; one daughter, Teresa L. and her husband, Billy Dalton Dixon of Apopka, FL; eight grandchildren, James and Reed VanAlstine, Justin, Jarrod, Ashley and Devan Dixon all of Apopka, FL and Tyler VanAlstine of Longwood, FL; one sister, Bonnie Chanell and her husband, Tom of Fultonville, NY; one brother, Terry VanAlstine and his wife, Janyce (Jones) of Palatine Bridge, NY; one cousin, several nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his father, Harold VanAlstine, July 28, 1985.
A 2:00 p.m. Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, October 12, 2003 at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY with the Rev. Wayne Cole officiating.
Burial will be in the Mapletown Cemetery in Canajoharie with full military honors conducted at graveside by the Fort Plain VFW Earl Stock Memorial Post #3275.
Family will receive friends and relatives from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service on October 12 at the funeral home.

Mary M. Gifford
October 5, 2003
Mrs. Mary M. Gifford, 93, formerly of Gifford Valley Road, Northville died Sunday, October 5, 2003 at the Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility, Amsterdam, following a long illness.
She was born November 30, 1909 in West Leyden, NY. She was the daughter of Frank and Wilhelmina Wilbert Miller.
She attended local schools in the West Leyden area. She was employed as a glove worker for many Northville area glove shops and was a "Forget" sewer and homemaker.
Mary was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church of Northville.
She married Ward Conklin on May 5, 1934 and he died in 1937. She was married to John Gifford on June 28, 1947 and he died in 1969.
She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Matilda Vanderhoof of Rome, NY and Mrs. Agnes Carter of Fort Johnson, NY; several nieces and nephews also survive her.
Friends may call Wednesday, October 8, 2003 from 10:00 to 11;00 a.m. at the St. Francis Catholic Church, Bridge Street, Northville where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. with Father Robert Powhida as celebrant.
Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Northville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility in Amsterdam, NY.
Arrangements are by the Northville Funeral Service.
