Lewis Morris Jr., 81, a former Amsterdam resident, passed away in Atlanta, Georgia, after a brief illness.
Born on April 30, 1922 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Lewis Morris Sr. and Edna Hogg Morris, he was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School and later the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
He lived in Houston, Texas for a time, and later in Atlanta, Georgia where he was employed as a petroleum equipment salesman for Meco Inc., for thirty four years until he retired.
During World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater of Operations.
In Amsterdam he was a member of St. Ann's Episcopal Church.
His wife, the former Patricia Hennessey, and his sister, Janet Hubbs, predeceased him.
Survivors include his sons, Lewis Morris III of Atlanta and Peter Morris of Philadelphia, PA; three grandchildren, Jenny Morris Mahood, John Morris and Collin James Morris; two nephews also survive.
Graveside funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2003 at Green Hill Cemetery at 12:00 noon, the Rev. Christopher A. Smith, Rector of St. Ann's will officiate.
Relatives and friends are invited.
The arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam.
Margaret (Peggy) Ryan Saltsman
October 14, 2003
Margaret (Peggy) Ryan Saltsman, 69, of Rte. 5, Fonda, passed away Tuesday morning at St. Mary's Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born on February 15, 1934 in the town of Root she was the daughter of William and Alice Coddington Ryan. she was a lifelong area resident, and was an alumni of Fultonville High School, graduating with the class of 1952.
Mrs. Saltsman was of the Christian faith, and was employed for a number of years with the Great American (Victory) Markets of Fonda.
On August 21, 1955 she married J. Azariah Saltsman Jr., he predeceased her on January 30, 2003.
Survivors are five sons, James J. Saltsman of Barre, VT, Jed P. Saltsman of Fonda, NY, John A. Saltsman of Westford, Mass., Joseph C. Saltsman of Derby, VT, and Jay Shawn Saltsman of Joppatowne MD; two daughters, Janice M. Saltsman and JoAnn Lopez both of Fonda; a brother, William Ryan of Johnstown, NY; and a sister, Mary Blake of Canajoharie, NY; 14 grandchildren, Amanda, Adam, Amy, Shane, Nicholas, Bradleigh, Hanna, Johna, Jessica, Michael, and Shauna Saltsman and Ian, Tiana and Christian Lopez; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
A Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main Street, Fultonville.
Interment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery.
Calling hours are Thursday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Community Health Center, 2-8 West Main Street, Johnstown, NY 12095.
DeForest "Manie" V. Phillips
October 15, 2003
Mr. DeForest "Manie" V. Phillips, 81, of Mapletown Rd., Canajoharie died Wednesday evening at home.
Born on October 31, 2003 in Salisbury Center, NY he was one of ten children of DeForest and Effa Eckler Phillips. He was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools.
Mr. Phillips started working on local dairy farms as a young man and held various jobs, working in a paper mill, working as a mechanic, driving a school bus, and working construction, before and after being called to service during WWII, serving in the United States Army. In 1952 Mr. Phillips and his wife Vera Settle Phillips, whom he married on August 19, 1950, bought their first dairy farm. Throughout his life he bought, fixed up, operated and sold various farms in the local area until his retirement in 1983. He also would buy, fix up and sell houses, motor homes, cars, and horses.
He loved spending time with family especially his grandchildren, riding his motorcycle, dancing and listening to country music. He loved the outdoors, and was an avid gardener. He also enjoyed traveling, going on vacations and spending winters in Florida.
Mr. Phillips was of the Baptist faith.
Besides his wife survivors include two sons, Victor D. Phillips and his wife Linda of Broadalbin, and Robert J. Phillips and his wife Lorraine of Canajoharie; a daughter, Linda E. Phillips of Stratford, NY; two sisters, Mella Hudyncia of Nelliston, and Shirley Martin of Deansboro, NY; seven grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Cornerstone Baptist Church Rt. 10, in Ames, NY with the Rev. Alan Potter officiating. Calling hours will be at the church on Saturday prior to the funeral from 9:30 until 11:00 a.m. The burial will take place in the Ft. Plain Cemetery, Ft. Plain. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the American Heart Association, 440 New Karner Rd., Albany, NY 12205-3890, the American Diabetes Association, 7 Washington Square, Albany, NY 12205, or the Cornerstone Baptist Church, Rt. 10, Canajoharie, NY 13317. Arrangements are by the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie.
Magdalena Borrero Batiz
October 16, 2003
Magdalena Borrero Batiz, 94, of Division Street, passed away Thursday evening at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico on August 17, 1909, the daughter of Antonio and Evangelista Batiz Borrero, she was educated there and moved to Massachusetts thirteen years ago and to Amsterdam in 2000.
A homemaker, she was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church. She loved to dance and was revered by her entire family that spanned five generations.
Her husband, Juan Ortiz predeceased her twenty-five years ago.
Survivors include her children, Juan Ortiz and Eugenio Ortiz of Amsterdam; Jesus Ortiz of Lowell, Massachusetts, Juantia Ortiz-Borrero of Amsterdam; three Brothers, Luis, Calio and Antiono Borrero all of Puerto Rico; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren also survive.
Services are Monday at 8:15 a.m. the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Grove Street, Father Pascal Iannotti, celebrant.
Interment is in Fairview Cemetery.
Calling hours are Sunday from 3:00-5;00 p.m. at the funeral home.
John H. Barton
October 15, 2003
John H. Barton, 71 of Mary Street, Palatine Bridge formerly of Little Falls passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at the VA Hospital, Albany.
He was born on August 17, 1932 in Little Falls the son of the late John F. and Vera V. (Dygert) Barton. He was a graduate of Little Falls High School, Class of 1950.
He was united in marriage to his wife of 48 years the former Wanda M. Morse on August 25, 1955 at the First Baptist Church, Little Falls by the Rev. Frederick Thorne.
Mr. Barton was a veteran of the US Navy serving during the Korean War. Entering the service on September 9, 1952 in Albany. He served as a Machinist Mate 3rd Class. He was honorably discharged on August 27, 1956 at the US Naval Station at Newport, RI.
Mr. Barton was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Little Falls,
He was employed for several years as a welder for the former Cherry-Burrell Corp., Little Falls. He was last employed for 22 years as a machinist for the Beech-Nut Food Corp., Canajoharie. Retiring in 1995.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda; three sons, David Barton and his wife Lori, Gloversville, John Barton and his wife Evelyn, Tulsa, OK and Mark Barton and his wife Terri, Starkville; five daughters, Melissa Barton, Palatine Bridge, Lori Bowerman and her husband James, Dawn Colegrove and her husband Randy, Tina Stewart and her husband Randy and Heidi Nichols and Charles Dygert all of Canajoharie; 14 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister Irene Knopf, who died December 22, 1983.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls with the Rev. Dr. Steven A. Scarcia, Rector of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Little Falls officiating.
Interment will take place at the convenience of the family.
Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the funeral home on Friday, October 17, 2003 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. and to attend the funeral services Saturday morning.
Samuel A. Seigal
October 15, 2003
Samuel A. Seigal, 90, of Highland Road, Amsterdam, passed away October 15, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
Sam, the fourth of five children, was born March 1, 1913 in Glens Falls, NY of Russian immigrant parents.
He attended school in Amsterdam, Albany, New Jersey and Brooklyn. His first jobs were in Brooklyn with A& S Department Store and Manhattan with B. Altman & Co.
He married Sonya Jacobson of Amsterdam on April of 1939. Their daughter Lois was born in 1943.
In business he was associated with J.B. Auto Company and J.B. Realty of Amsterdam from 1939 until his retirement.
He was a member of B'nai B'rith and an active board member and house chairman of the Congregation Sons of Israel Synagogue, where he served as construction chairman for the building on Guy Park Avenue built in 1977. He was also a member of the Amsterdam Lodge #89 F & AM, the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rites and of the Oriental Temple of Troy, NY. He was a charter member of the Sight Conservation Society of Northeastern N.Y. He was a chairman of the Montgomery County Transportation and Land Use Committees. He was pleased to be a volunteer and patient representative at St. Mary's Hospital.
Sam was predeceased by his loving wife Sonya Seigal in 1996.
He is survived by his daughter Lois Seigal of Amsterdam and many relatives, including nieces, nephews and cousins.
Sam was a loving husband and a devoted father. He had affection for Amsterdam and was a supporter of opportunities for young people and community causes.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Congregation Sons of Israel Synagogue, 355 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam.
Burial is at the Temple of Israel Cemetery, Cranesville, NY.

William F. Blankenbaker Jr.
and
Sheila A. Blankenbaker
William F. Blankenbaker Jr. and his wife, Sheila A. Blankenbaker of Division Street, Amsterdam, passed away within hours of each other. Bill died late Saturday evening at St. Mary's Hospital and Sheila died suddenly Sunday morning at her home.
William was born in Amsterdam on May 18, 1945, a son of William F.. Sr. and Beatrice Godey Blankenbaker. His mom passed away in March of this year.
A lifelong resident, he was employed for the past 36 years by General Electric Company in Schenectady, in the furnace division.
An avid fisherman, he was a member of the G.E. Quarter Century Club and St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Sheila was born in Amsterdam on April 15, 1949, the daughter of Clayton and Irene Tomlinson, and she also a lifelong area resident. A homemaker, her number one priority was her family and she adored her grandchildren. She has a special place in her heart for her pets.
They were united in marriage in 1968.
They are survived by four children, Shannon, Tracey and Frank Blankenbaker, all of Amsterdam and William Blankenbaker, III of Schenectady; four grandchildren, Jacob and Prestin Baird, Sheila Carpenter and Damien Blankenbaker.
Bill is also survived by his brother, Ronald (Nicolena) Blankenbaker and a sister, Shirley (Mrs. John) Rigatti, all of Amsterdam.
Sheila is also survived by two brothers, Donald and James Tomlinson and a sister, Sandy. Nieces and nephews also survived them.
Services for Bill and Sheila will take place Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam. The Rev. John Califano, Hospice Chaplin will officiate.
Calling hours are Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Interment is in Fairview Cemetery.
It is the request of the family that contributions be made to the Montgomery County SPCA. Rte. 5S, or to a charity of one's choice.
Tiffany L. Jones Kimmel
October 18, 2003
Mrs. Tiffany L. Jones Kimmel, 20, of Fordsbush Spur Road, Fort Plain, died early Saturday, October 18, 2003 at her home following a long illness.
She was born on August 25, 1983 in Amsterdam, NY the daughter of Richard D. Jones and Elizabeth C. Luck Jones.
Tiffany attended Fort Plain Elementary and Middle School and then attended Little Falls High School.
She was a homemaker of her own home and previously worked as a PCA in Georgia. Tiffany was an area resident for over 18 years and lived in Hinesville, Georgia for a brief period of time.
Tiffany attended Fordsbush Bible Church and was a former Varsity Basketball Cheerleader for Little Falls High School. She enjoyed archery with her Dad, and also enjoyed bowling, dancing, music, horseback riding and was an avid shopper. Tiffany enjoyed spending time with her friends and family.
Tiffany married Dwayne Kimmel on June 7, 2001.
She is predeceased by her father, Richard D. Jones, April 14, 2002; her maternal grandfather, Emory Luck and her great grandparents.
Survivors include her mother, Elizabeth C. Jones of Fort Plain; her husband, Dwayne Kimmel, who is presently serving in the U.S. Army in Georgia; her maternal grandmother, Genevieve Luck of Fort Plain; her paternal grandmother, Rose Roxzydal of Canajoharie; and her paternal grandfather and step grandmother, Richard D. and Donna Jones Sr., of Fort Plain; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A 10:00 a.m. funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 21, 2003 at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie with the Rev. Marty Braemer, Pastor of Fordsbush Bible Church officiating.
Family will receive friends and relatives this evening, Monday, October 20, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Tiffany's memory to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main Street, Gloversville, NY, 12078.
John L. Siarkowski
October 21, 2003
John L. Siarkowski, 87, of John Street, Amsterdam, passed away Tuesday morning at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility.
Born in Schenectady on January 8, 1916, one of nine children born to Antoni and Maryanna Plodiszewski Siarkowski he came to Amsterdam at the age of five and has lived here since.
John was a graduate of St. Stanislaus School and attended higher education locally. He was employed by Bigelow Sanford Carpet Co., Mohawk Carpets, Bay Shore Industries and Noteworthy Co. For twelve years, he was employed by the New York State Department of Transportation as a lock worker in Pattersonville until he retired in 1989.
During World War II, John served his country with the US Army as a military policeman. He received a rifle marksman award for his duties.
A communicant of St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church, he was an avid Yankees fan and will be remembered for his love and devotion to his family especially his grandchildren and more recently, his great grandchildren.
John was the last surviving sibling in his family.
Survivors include his beloved wife of sixty-two years, the former Ida Nagiones whom he married on June 29, 1941; his loving daughter Arlene and husband Ronald Anthony Sinatra of Hagaman; his grandchildren, James J. Bottisti and his wife Christine, Sheree Krester and her husband Richard and Margaret Heitkemp and her husband Thomas; great grandchildren, Amanda, Johnathan and Courtney Bottisti, Jessica Marotta, Kaitlin Kretser, Bonnie and Sara Heitkemp; nieces and nephews also survive.
Services are Friday at 8:45 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Casimir's Church. Father Stanley J. Swierzowski, celebrant.
Interment is in St. Casimir's Cemetery.
Calling hours are Thursday from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
