Mrs. Thelma G. Smith, 74, of Clinton Road, Minden, died Monday after a brief illness.
Born Aug. 28, 1923 in Stone Arabia, she was the daughter of Arthur and Mabel Dillenbeck Snyder. She was a lifelong area resident and a 1941 graduate of Fort Plain High School.
She was a homemaker and worked on the family farm until retiring. She was also an Avon representative for 35 years.
Mrs. Smith was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Freysbush and its Ladies Aid Society. She was also a member of the VFW Post 3275 Auxiliary in Fort Plain.
She married Robert J. Smith on Jan. 30, 1943.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Kenneth Smith of Fort Plain; a daughter, Mary Hollenbeck of Brooksville, Fla.; a brother, Clarence Snyder of Amsterdam; a sister, Katherine Werner of Fort Plain; five grandchildren, a step-grandson; three great-grandsons, two step-great-grandsons and nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a son, Arlan Smith, in 1997.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Freysbush with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating. Burial will follow in Fort Plain Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 1 to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley. The VFW will conduct a service at 7:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW Post 3275 Scholarship Fund, St. John's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or the South Minden Volunteer Fire Department.
Alisha Intelisano
July 9, 1998
Alisha Intelisano, 21, of Vail, Colo., died July 9.
Born July 22, 1976 in Gloversville, she was the daughter of Daniel Intelisano and Kathleen Pedrick.
She was a 1994 graduate of Summit High School in Breckenridge, Colo. She was employed by City Market in Vail for the past three years.
In addition to her father, survivors include two sisters, Shauna Intelisano and Ayana Pedrick of Breckenridge; her paternal grandparents, Sylvester and Jan Intelisano of Tribes Hill; her maternal grandmother, Anne Pedrick Ackley of Johnstown; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services and cremation took place in Colorado.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Foundation.
Mildred Roof Nevins
September 7, 1998
Mrs. Mildred Roof Nevins, 90, of the St. Johnsville Nursing Home, died Monday after a long illness.
Born May 1, 1908 in Starkville, she was the daughter of Cola and Alice Getman Roof. Mrs. Nevins attended Cramers Corner Country School in Herkimer County and Fort Plain High School.
She lived in Fort Plain from 1966 to 1996, when she moved to the nursing home.
Mrs. Nevins was a member of the Starkville Lutheran Church and a former member of the Farm Bureau.
She married Austin P. Nevins on Oct. 26, 1929.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Audrey Strong of Kent; a son, Russell M. Nevins of Bridgewater; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Private graveside services will be conducted in Fort Plain Cemetery with Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating. Cremation was in Park View Crematory, Schenectady.
There will be calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Arrangements are by the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home.
David Lasher
September 6, 1998
Mr. David R. Lasher, 56, of Mountain Lake South Shore Road, Gloversville, died Sunday at his home.
Born May 12, 1943 in Little Falls, he was the son of Harold and Lottie Gillaboard Lasher. He was educated in St. Johnsville Schools and moved to Amsterdam in 1968.
Mr. Lasher was employed with local small businesses and at one time in the warehouse of Esquire Novelty Co. of Amsterdam. He then moved to the Bleecker area in 1989.
Survivors include his wife, Jennie Elmira Lasher, three sons, John Lasher and Stephen Cleveland, both of Amsterdam; James Champlain of Broadalbin; two daughters, Bobbi and Holly Lasher of Gloversville; four brothers, Brant (Leonard) Lasher of Oppenheim, Nicholas and Harold Lasher Jr. of Amsterdam and Burt Lasher of Perth; two sisters, Charlotte Lynch of Oppenheim and Cora Lee Hart of Johnstown; his companion, Marget Cuozzo of Gloversville; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at the DeStefano Funeral Home, Route 5S, Amsterdam, with the Rev. Dan Wheeler officiating. Burial will be in St. Johnsville Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. in Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Joseph DiMaggio
September 6, 1998
Mr. Joseph L. DiMaggio Sr., 60, formerly of Woodrow Road, Amsterdam, died Sunday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He lived in Amsterdam for the last three years, previously living in Cobleskill.
Born June 14, 1938 in Rutland, Vt., he was the son of Leo and Josephine Szymanski DiMaggio.
He was a 1956 graduate of Cobleskill High School, then graduated from the State University of New York at Cobleskill in 1963 and then attended SUNY-Albany to study elementary education.
He was the former owner-operator of Leo's Italian Restaurant in Howes Cave and then he was a cook serving in the Merchant Marines for 10 years retiring in 1984.
Mr. DiMaggio was of the Roman Catholic faith and a member of the Canajoharie-Fort Plain Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elk No. 2621.
He married Marlene Safford on Oct. 4, 1961.
Survivors include a daughter, Valerie J. Montanye of Canajoharie; two sons, Joseph L. DiMaggio Jr. and Alan L. DiMaggio both of Canajoharie; and three grandsons.
Cremation took place at the Park View Crematorium in Schenectady.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service Inc., Box 126, Canajoharie, 13317.
Arrangements are by Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 29 Otsego St., Canajoharie.
Robert Checca
September 5, 1998
Robert C. Checca, 47, of Fulton, died Saturday at the Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville after being stricken at his family's camp in Bleecker.
Born Oct. 9, 1950 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Mario and Josephine Ottavio Checca.
Mr. Checca was a 1968 graduate of the Wilbur H. Lynch High School. He received his associate's degree from Fulton-Montgomery Community College in 1973, his bachelor's degree from the State University of New York at Plattsburg in 1975, and his master's degree from SUNY-Plattsburg.
He was the the assistant registrar at SUNY-Cortland 1977 to 1983, the assistant registrar at Caregie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh from 1984 to 1986 and was current;y employed as registrar at SUNY-Oswego.
Mr. Checca was a member of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars & Admissions Officers, National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors. He was a member of the Homer Free & Accepted Masons.
He married Amy Hallenbeck Checca on June 3, 1978.
In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include a brother, Charles R. Checca of Pla Del Ray, Calif.; two sisters, Carol Nelson of Niskayuna and Pauline Kretser of Ephratah; several aunts, uncles, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Boice Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church Amsterdam. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Langworthy Scholarship fund.
Joseph Annable
September 6, 1998
Joseph LeRoy Annable, 92, of the Baptist Retirement Center, Scotia, died Sunday after a long illness.
Born in Gloversville, Mr. Annable lived in the Glenville area most of his life, most recently on Rockland Road. He was a 1924 graduate of the Old Schenectady High School and attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for three years.
From 1942 to 1944, Mr. Annable was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and held a pilot instructor's license during that time.
For 24 years, he worked for the General Electric Co., retiring in 1971.
He married Catherine Woodward Ryan Annable in 1951. She died in March.
Survivors include three stepsons, Thomas and Michael Ryan, both of Glens Falls, and James Ryan of California.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Prospect Hill Cemetery, East Fulton Street, Gloversville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Baptist Retirement Center, 297 N. Ballston Ave, Scotia 12302.
Cremation will be under the direction of the Glenville Funeral Home.
Mary F. Courtois
September 7, 1998
Mary F. Courtois, 58, of Oakland Avenue, Amsterdam, died Monday after being stricken.
Arrangements by the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110 Division St., Amsterdam, are incomplete and will be announced.
Frances Witkowski
September 6, 1998
Mrs. Frances N. Witkowski, 91, of Third Street, Scotia, formerly of Amsterdam, died Sunday at St. Clare's Hospital in Schenectady.
Born in Schenectady, Mrs. Witkowski was educated in Clifton Park.
She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Scotia and a member of its Leisure Club.
Mrs. Witkowski was also a member of the Gold and Silver Club.
She was the widow of Steven Krasnowski and Clemens J. Witkowski.
Survivors include two daughters, Dolores Zarriello of Las Vegas, Nev., and Irene Juron of Saratoga Springs; a sister, Victoria Brewster of Amsterdam; a brother, Peter Nowicki of Mayfield; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Lasak Funeral Home, 176 Sacandaga Road, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church. Burial will be in St. St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Amsterdam.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Bernard Ruota
September 6, 1998
Bernard F. Ruota, 63, of Rosa Road, Niskayuna, died Sunday at home after a long illness.
Born in Schenectady, Mr. Ruota was a 1953 graduate of Nott Terrace High School and was a lifelong area resident.
From 1953 until last month, he worked in the family owned business, S. Ruota & Son Mushroom Growers, where he was a partner until the business closed.
Mr. Ruota held a private pilot's license.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church.
Survivors include his father, Frank B. Ruota of Niskayuna; two sisters, Margaret Benacquista of Delanson and Nancy Polachek of Schenectady; and a brother, Frank S. Ruota of Glenville.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 a.m. Wednesday at the N. Rossi & Sons Funeral Home,Union and North Jay streets, Schenectady, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery, Glenville.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church or Community Hospice of Schenectady.
Peter Raid
September 5, 1998
Peter Raid, 74, of Glen Avenue, Amsterdam, died Saturday at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness.
Born Sept. 18, 1923 in the Town of Florida, he was the son of Charles and Eleanor Raid. He was educated in local schools and was employed for 31 years as meat department manager at Price Chopper supermarket on Eastern Parkway in Schenectady. He retired in 1989.
He was a communicant of St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam, where he served as a Eucharistic minister.
Mr. Raid was also a member of Club Sixth at St. Mary's Hospital and was a member of the American Lithuanian Club.
He married Anne Bansavage on Sept. 18, 1951.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Thomas Road of Scotia; three daughters, Madeline Ward of Johnstown, Karen DeCicco of Amsterdam and Diane Reilly of Albany; three grandchildren, three nieces and a nephew.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. John The Baptist Church on Vanderveer Street. Interment will be in St. Casimir's Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Casimir Memorial Fund.
