Bernard Gefen
July 12, 1999
Bernard B. Gefen, 96, of the Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility, Amsterdam, formerly of South Main Avenue, Albany, died today at the nursing home.
Born in Boston, he lived for many years in the Auburn area prior to moving to Albany in 1946.
Mr. Gefen was the owner of the House of Montague Furniture in Albany and Ginsburg Furniture Co. in Plattsburgh; and was director of the Johnson-Carper Furniture Co. in Roanoke, Va., retiring in 1976.
He was a member of the Congregation Beth Emeth and its brotherhood. He also served on the congregation board of directors. He served as head of the ushering committee at Beth Emeth. He was a member of Washington Lodge 85 F&AM in Albany and the Kiwanis Club. He was a volunteer at the Albany Jewish Community Center and the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home.
Mr. Gefen was predeceased by his wife, Rosalind Liberman Gefen, in 1992.
Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis Levy of Amsterdam; a son, Alan Gefen of Nashua, N.H.; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
The funeral is 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Congregation of Beth Emeth, Academy Road, Albany.
Interment will follow in the Beth Emeth Cemetery, Turner Lane, Loudonville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Congregation of Beth Emeth or the ETTA B. Liberman Memorial Fund c/o B'Nai Israel Synagogue, Auburn 13021.
Funeral arrangements are by the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Ave., Albany.

Lydia Carter
July 9, 1999
Lydia Carter, 85, of Spring Street, St. Johnsville, died Friday at Bassett Health Care in Cooperstown.
Born Feb. 16, 1914, in St. Johnsville, she was the daughter of Wallace and Maude Roller Rider. She was a graduate of St. Johnsville High School and was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Carter was employed by the St. Johnsville School District as a crossing guard until her retirement in 1981.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Church, its Altar Rosary Society, and a member of the St. Johnsville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
She married Henry B. Carter Aug. 24, 1934. He died Feb. 16, 1991.
Survivors include two sons, Jacque Carter of Fort Plain and Jan Carter of St Johnsville; two brothers, Carlton Rider and Joseph Rider, both of St. Johnsville; a sister, Jeannette Bundyk of St. Johnsville; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service is scheduled at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Johnsville Cemetery with Sister Dolores Stevens of St. Patrick's Church officiating.
Cremation is under the direction of the Smith Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville.
There are no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Johnsville Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Harold Edel
July 10, 1999
Harold Edel of Bleecker Street, Gloversville, died Saturday at the Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility in Johnstown, where he lived for two months.
Born in Gloversville, he was the son of Henry and Margaret Kennedy Edel. He was educated in Gloversville schools.
He was a self-employed electrician, retiring in 1996.
Mr. Edel was a veteran of the Army Signal Corps.
He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church.
Survivors include several cousins.
The funeral is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 147 Bleecker St., Gloversville.
Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
A calling hour will begin at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Florence Herman
July 11, 1999
Florence E. Herman, 83, of Sharon Springs, died Sunday at home.
Born July 28, 1915, in Cherry Valley, she was the daughter of Clarence and Effie Foland Lane. Mrs. Herman attended Sharon Springs school and was a lifelong area resident.
She was a machine operator at the Beech-Nut Nutrition Corp., retiring in 1970. Before that, Mrs. Herman worked for the White Sulphur Springs Co. and Hollywood Restaurant.
She married Elmer Herman Dec. 10, 1935. He died in 1992.
Survivors include a brother, Alva Lane of Canajoharie; and two sisters, Roby Lowe of Canajoharie and and Beatrice Lowe of Sharon Springs.
Private graveside services will be held in Sharon Springs Cemetery, Leesville.
There are no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sharon Springs Volunteer Rescue Squad, Box 554, Sharon Springs 13459.
Arrangements are by the Lappeus Funeral Home, 32 Park St., Sharon Springs.

Carlene Martin
July 10, 1999
Carlene M. Martin, 74, of Sodeman Road, Middle Grove, died Saturday at Saratoga Springs Hospital after a short illness.
Born and educated in Syracuse, Mrs. Martin moved to Schenectady in 1947, to East Galway in 1971, and later to Middle Grove.
She was employed by American Coat and Linen Laundry, both in Schenectady, as a bookkeeper until retiring in 1984.
Mrs. Martin married Charles M. Martin June 6, 1947.
In addition to her husband, survivors include three sons, Charles J. Martin of Hagaman, James C. Martin of Burnt Hills, and Christopher E. Martin of Charlton; a sister, Shirley Tarver of Syracuse; and five grandchildren.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Richard J. Ryan Funeral Home, Sacandaga Road, Galway.
Burial will be in Rock City Falls Cemetery.
Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Catholic Church, Rock City Falls.

Joseph Watrobski
July 12, 1999
Joseph J. Watrobski, 86, of the Town of Perth, died this morning at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.
Arrangements by the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel, 13 Belmont Place, Amsterdam, are incomplete and will be announced.

Edna Sidlauskas
July 10, 1999
Edna J. Sidlauskas, 72, of State Route 67, Amsterdam, died Saturday at St. Mary's Hospital.
Born in Amsterdam April 25, 1927, she was the daughter of Charles and Mary Fedorowicz Krolikowski. She was a 1944 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School and was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Sidlauskas was employed at the Navy Depot in Scotia and was also a homemaker. She was a member of St. Casimir's Church.
She was predeceased by her husband, Stanley Sidlauskas, whom she married Aug. 26, 1945. He died in 1988.
Survivors include three sons, Stanley, George and Peter Sidlauskas, all of Amsterdam; a daughter, Patricia Zanella of Santa Ana, Calif.; a sister, Frances Rostowski of Amsterdam; four grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial was to be celebrated this morning at St. Casimir's Church, with interment in St. Casimir's Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Casimir's Memorial Fund, 260 E. Main St., Amsterdam 12010.
Arrangements were by the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel, 13 Belmont Place, Amsterdam.

Marga Gebhardt
July 11, 1999
Marga K. Gebhardt, 76, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., formerly of Starkville, died suddenly Sunday at the Bassett Health Care Facility, Cooperstown.
Born July 4, 1923, in Lunzig, Germany, she was the daughter of Walter and Else Madler Ott. She was educated in Lunzig and came to the United States in 1955. She became a U.S. citizens in 1960.
She was a homemaker and was of the Methodist faith.
Mrs. Gebhardt married Hans K. Gebhardt Dec. 21, 1941.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Rainer Gebhardt of Starkville and Karl Gebhardt of Fort Plain; and five grandchildren.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
Interment will be private.
There are no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to Starkville United Methodist Church, Route 80, Fort Plain 13339.
Arrangements are by the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain 13339.

Stella Matuszak
July 11, 1999
Stella "Sadie" Banaszewski Matuszak, 87, of Schenectady, died Sunday at the Hallmark Nursing Centre after a long illness.
Mrs. Matuszak was born in Schenectady and lived there all her life.
She was a communicant of the Church of St. Adalbert.
For many years, Mrs. Matuszak worked in the assembly department of the General Electric Co.
She was a member of the Polish National Alliance, a member of Zgoda Mloda Polska Lodge, and the recipient of its Mother of the Year award.
She was predeceased by her husband, Vincent Matuszak, in 1993.
Survivors include two daughters, Arlene Hartman of Niskayuna and Stella Reicherter of Edinburg; a son, John Wisniewski of Galway; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral is 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Feeley-Nuzback Funeral Home, 1 Mohawk Ave., Scotia, followed at 11 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of St. Adalbert.
Entombment will be in Most Holy Redeemer Mausoleum, Niskayuna.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church restoration fund.

Anna Brown
July 7, 1999
Anna Brown, 71, of Cady Street, Amsterdam, died Wednesday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Born Aug. 13, 1927, in San Turce, Puerto Rico, she was the daughter of Victor and Monserrate Perez Rodriguez. She moved to New York City in the 1950s and to Amsterdam in 1982.
Mrs. Brown worked for many years for Coleco Industries in Amsterdam.
She was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam.
Mrs. Brown married Charles Brown Feb. 25, 1957. He died Aug. 23, 1991.
She was predeceased by a son, James Burnett Jr., in 1979.
Survivors include three daughters, Geneva Carter of Amsterdam, Anna Aviles of Florida, and Charlotte Bowers of the Town of Root; a sister, Bernice Rodriguez of Brooklyn; seven grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be private and at the convenience of the family.
Cremation will be at Vale Crematory in Schenectady.
There are no calling hours.
Arrangements are by the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.
