HELEN GREEN

NORWICH - Helen Green, 84 of 143 North Broad St., passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning,, Jan. 21, 2003 at Chenango Memorial Hospital.

Born in Oxford on Dec. 17, 1918, she was the daughter of LaVern and Jane (Brown) Leach. Helen graduated from Greene High School, and then attended beauty school in Binghamton. She was a hairdresser, owning her own business, Dick’s Beauty Salon, which she ran for 45 years.

In 1947 in Norwich, she married Richard E. Green, who passed away on Sept. 30, 1977. Helen is survived by two sisters: Ethel Taranto and Eleanor Charles and her husband Richard, all of Norwich; and a daughter and son-in-law: Jane and Harrison Davis of York, Pa.; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Lillian Peterson.

Helen was a member of St. Paul’s Church and a member and past president of the Ladies of Charity. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a volunteer with the American Cancer Society and was active in the St. Paul’s and St. Bartholomew’s Golden Agers. Funeral services for Helen will be held on Friday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Church. Friends may call in the Marian Chapel of the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will take place in the spring in St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Waterville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Helen maybe made to the charity of your choice.

The arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Funeral Home.

A. SUMNER RISLEY

HAMILTON - A. Sumner Risley of Madison Lane Apartments died on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003.

Born on Oct. 8, 1920 in the family home at 11 Wylie St., Hamilton, he was the son of Austin J. and Nellie Beebe Risley. He was a descendant of Mr. Amos Kingsley, one of the 18 founders of Colgate.

He was a businessman for 30 years in the village of Hamilton and was the director of advertising for 11 years at the Mid-York Weekly. Mr. Risley was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge 120 F&AM Hamilton, and past member of the Rotary Club.

Services will be private and there are no calling hours.

Burial will be in the spring in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Hamilton.

Services have been entrusted to the Paul Funeral Home.

JUSTIN DECARLO

SHERBURNE - Justin M. DeCarlo, 24, a Sherburne resident and former Beacon resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, in Syracuse.

Born on May 27, 1978 in Cold Spring, he was the son of William DeCarlo and Cynthia of Beacon, and Barbara Endress and William of Sherburne.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, William Endress and wife Amy of Dazell, S.C., and Corey Endress of Sherburne; two sisters, Megan and Amanda DeCarlo, both of Beacon; one niece, Lorolee Endress; grandparents, Mary and James Sherer, William and Patricia DeCarlo, Robert and Georgana Endress, and Dixie Caron; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by an uncle, Robert Welch; and a grandfather, Robert Welch Sr.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. from the Halvey Funeral Home, 24 Willow St., Beacon.

Interment will follow in Fishkill Rural Cemetery.

Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

There will be a memorial service in the spring in Sherburne.

WILLIAM HALL

NORWICH - A Celebration of Life for William J. Hall was held on Friday morning at 11 a.m. from the United Church of Christ First Congregational of Norwich. The Rev. Joseph Connolly, pastor, officiated.

Bill's daughters, Anne Ruhe and Claire Doyle, offered remembrances and a poem in honor of their father.

Joe Benenati, Henry Drexler, Ray Lauenstein and Matt Cooney gave the eulogies. Organist for the service was Virginia Helton.

Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery of Whitestore.

VIVIAN CASE

NORWICH - Funeral services for Vivian Hicks Case were held on Thursday at 10 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Romeyn Kipp, pastor of the Holmesville Baptist Church, officiated.

Interment will be at a later date in the Evergreen Cemetery of Whitestore.

VARLEY GIBSON

NORWICH - Funeral services for Varley Gibson were held on Saturday at 11 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Rebekah Sweet, pastor of the Broad Street United Methodist Church, officiated.

Interment with full military rites will be at a later date in the Mt. Hope Cemetery.

MICHAEL BENENATI SR.

NORWICH - Michael P. Benenati, Sr., 85, of Martins Creek, Pa., died Sunday in Easton Hospital.

Born in Norwich on Dec. 3, 1915, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary Agnus (Testa) Benenati.

He was a custodian at the Easton Area School District for 26 and a half years retiring in 1983. He was also employed at Renaldo Plumbing and Heating Co., Roseto, Pa.

He was married to the former Antoinette (Liro) Benenati. They were married April 15, 1944. They celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary last April.

He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army with the combat engineers of the 15th Division and was a Dec. 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor survivor. He started his military career in 1936 and was scheduled to be discharged on Dec. 7, 1941. However, he remained in the Army until Aug. 12, 1945.

He was a member of St. Rocco's Roman Catholic Church, Martins Creek, Pa. He was a member of the Lower Mt. Bethel Senior Citizens Center.

Surviving are his sons: Joseph M. Benenati, of Marlton, N.J. and Michael P. Benenati, Jr., of Bangor, Pa. and his daughters Linda M. Benenati Green of Lock Haven, Pa., and Rosalie J. Benenati Calandra of Wind Gap, Penn. He is also survived by his sisters: Mary Coe of Norwich, Louise Loscavio of Norwich and Teresa Diaz of Binghamton and two brothers Joseph Benenati of Norwich and John Benenati of Littleton, N.C. Also surviving is six grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

Funeral services are to be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. at the James J. Palmeri Funeral Home, 6602 Alpha Ave., Martins Creek, Pa., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Rocco's Roman Catholic Church, Martins Creek, Penn. Friends may call on Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Interment will be in Church Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Rocco's Memorial Fund.

CHARLES COLLINS SR.

OXFORD - Charles H. Collins, Sr., 66, went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 2, 2001 at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton.

He was predeceased by his parents, William and Edna Collins, his sister, Wilma, and two brothers, Lee and Kenneth.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Collins, Oxford; three daughters and two son-in-laws, Sandra and Daniel Dalmer, McDonough, Debbie and Tab Winner, Colorado, Mary A. Collins, Ithaca, one son and daughter-in-law, Charles H. and Bonnie Collins, Jr., McDonough; grandchildren, Charles H. Collins, III, Michelle and Devon Thomsen, Norwich; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Anna Kingsbury, Eva and Frank Neal, Sherburne; brother and sister-in-law John W. and Alta Collins, Sherburne; brother George T. Collins and Ruth Kimber, Greene, and several nieces and nephews.

Charles owned and operated Midway Home Sales in Oxford for over 30 years. He also operated Midway Construction for several years and was in the trucking business for many years. He was Chairman of the Brisben Fire District for 14 years. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

Funeral and Committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Root Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ralph Osborne, Rector of Zion Episcopal Church, Greene officiating. Burial will be in Warn-Tenbroeck Cemetery, Brisben at a later date. Friends of the family may call Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Root Funeral Home, 23 North Chenango St., Greene. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Brisben Fire Department, the Oxford Emergency Squad or the American Cancer Society.
