FRANKLIN TUTTLE

NORWICH - Funeral services for Franklin Tuttle were held on Saturday at 11 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Ralph Hinman, pastor of the Bible Baptist Church of Norwich, officiated. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

EDNA FRITTS

NORWICH - Edna P. Fritts, 83, mother of Marilyn Kochersperger of Norwich and Carolyn Fleckenstein of Wilmington, Del., passed away Sunday morning, July 22, 2001 in the Chenango Memorial Hospital of Norwich.

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be published in the Tuesday edition of The Evening Sun.

Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.

JOSEPHINE TAYLOR

NORWICH - Funeral services for Josephine Taylor were held on Friday at the Devine-Wilson Memorial Home. Rev. Roosevelt Simmons, a former pastor of St. Matthew's AME Zion Church, officiated. Rev. Will Coulson offered the 23rd psalm and Marcia Tuminia sang "Amazing Grace."

Burial followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery with Rev. Simmons offering the committal prayers. The casket bearers were Rev. Will Coulson, Edward and Frederick George, Martin Daly, John Farnsworth and Fayne George.

The arrangements were by the Devine-Wilson Memorial Home.

WAYNE UTTER

SHERBURNE - Wayne A. "Gramps" Utter, 78, of Valrico, Fla., passed away Thursday, July 19, 2001.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor of Valrico, Fla.; son, Wayne Utter, Jr., of Apex, N.C.; daughter, Sue Lynn Wilson, of Guilford; four sisters: Kathleen Maggio of Valrico, Fla., Barbara Doremus of Brandon, Fla., Betty Beardslee of Goshen, Ala., Carol Ackley of Oneonta and two grandchildren.

He was a native of Oneonta moving to the area in 1996 coming from Sherburne. He was a manufacturing supervisor with Kenyon Press in Sherburne, a Baptist and a member of the Strawberry Ridge Veterans Club, a past president of Otego Volunteers Fire Department of Otego, a previous member of Strawberry Ridge Neighbor Watch program, a sergeant in the U.S. Army, World War II veteran.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. on July 24 at the Stowers Brandon Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

ANGELO GARITO NORWICH - Angelo J. Garito, "Ang," 74, of Pleasant St., Norwich, passed away Sunday afternoon, July 22, 2001 in the Chenango Memorial Hospital.

A life-long resident of Norwich, Ang attended the Norwich schools, graduating with the class of 1944. During World War II, he served his country in the United States Navy from June of 1945 until August of 1946. He was called back to active duty during the Korean War, where he again served in the Navy, from Oct., 1950, through Aug. of 1951. Ang returned to Norwich after his discharge, to open and operate his own body shop for the next several years. He subsequently worked for TACO of Sherburne, until they closed. In 1985, Ang put his talent in body work back to work when he took a position in the body shop of Christman Motor Sales. He worked with both new and used cars to be reconditioned, and was still working there at the time of his passing.

A life-time member of VFW Post #2782, Ang was very active in the post. He was a past Commander, who, for many years, was the post Quartermaster, and, for several years, was All State Quartermaster for the post. Ang was also a member of the American Legion Post #189, and was a life-long communicant of St. Bartholomew's Church in Norwich. An avid fisherman, he truly enjoyed fishing on the outer banks of the Carolinas and in the Thousand Islands. He was also an avid race car fan whose favorite driver was Mark Martin, and he enjoyed building miniature ships. Above all else, Ang was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

Born July 12, 1927, in Norwich, Ang was the son of Angelo and Angelina (Natoli) Garito. On July 31, 1948, in Norwich, he married Betsy Prindle, who passed away March 9, 1997. Ang is survived by his daughters: Cindy and Ted Guinn of Norwich; Judy and Richard Hadlock of Oxford; and Gail Frayer of Norwich; his grandchildren: Eric and Nate Guinn, both of Norwich; Matthew Frayer and wife Rena of Norwich; and Corey Hadlock of Oxford; one great granddaughter, Alexandria Frayer of Norwich; his brother and sister-in-law, Bart and Molly Garito of Norwich; and his daughter-in-law, Joan Garito of Norwich. Many nieces, nephews, and cousins survive. Besides his wife, Betsy, Ang was predeceased by two sons, Martin and John Garito.

Memorial Mass of Resurrection for Ang will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday from St. Bartholomew's Church. Rev. Douglas Cunningham, pastor, will officiate. Committal with full military rites will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery of Norwich. Friends are invited to join the family at the VFW in Norwich from 4:30 to 5 p.m. for a reception. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be made to VFW Post #2782, 61-63 East Main St., Norwich, NY 13815; to the Norwich Emergency Squad, marked "Emergency Medical," c/o Fire Chief, One City Plaza, Norwich, NY 13815; or to St. Bartholomew's Church, 8 Silver St., Norwich, NY 13815.

NELLIE MANLEY

NORWICH - Nellie M. Manley, 88, long-time resident of the Burdick-Medbury Road, Norwich, went home to be with the Lord on July 23, 2001.

Born in Otego, Nellie came to Norwich at an early age. After her schooling in the local system, Nellie took a job in the candy store next to the Colonia Theatre. During the war years, she worked for Scintilla of Sidney, and also for the W. T. Grant Company in Norwich. Her longest employment was with Victory Markets, where she worked in the Bainbridge, Sidney, and Unadilla stores in addition to the North and South Broad Street stores in Norwich. Nellie and her husband had lived on the Burdick-Medbury Road since 1943, owning and operating a small working farm in conjunction with her other employments. She had been a very devoted member of the Holmesville Baptist Church since 1953. She enjoyed picking strawberries which she would use in her baking, and truly enjoyed baking the 8-10 pies which her family would consume every time they got together. Knitting and crocheting also brought her joy, and she liked doing crossword puzzles. Following her retirement, Nellie and her husband Bob truly loved to spend their winters in Florida.

Nellie was born April 25, 1913, the daughter of Robert and Lottie (Root) Sutton. On June 26, 1931, in Norwich, she married Robert Manley, who passed away March 23, 1992. Nellie is survived by her children: Patricia A. Ryan of Norwich; Bruce and Joan Manley of Norwich; and the Rev. Donald R. and Anne Manley of Oxford, Fla.; by her brother, Lloyd Sutton of Solsville, and her sister-in-law, Edna Sutton of Alabama; and by her 15 grandchildren: Tim and Mary Beth Ryan, Norwich; Dan and Patty Ryan, Guilford; Laurie Burton, Norwich; Tom and Brenda Ryan, Norwich; Patrick and Connie Ryan, Norwich; Richard and Akemi Ryan, Japan; Molly and David Camadine, Oxford; Anne and Michel Gardner, Oxford; Marty Manley and fiancee Kathy, of Raleigh, N.C.; Kevin Manley, Binghamton; Holly Manley, Norwich; Debby and Bruce Branham, Norwich; Randy and Louise Manley, Hawaii; Christie and Richard Underhill, Richmond, Va.; and Dana and Michelle Manley, Naples, Fla. She is also survived by 33 great grandchildren, a special cousin, June Jenkins of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. Nellie was predeceased by her son-in-law, Richard Ryan; and by her brothers, Kenneth, Everett and Fayette Sutton.

Funeral services for Nellie will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday from the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Romeyn Kipp, pastor of the Holmesville Baptist Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in the North Norwich Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home on Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to the Wheel Chair Lift at the Holmesville Baptist Church, 3024 State Route 8, South New Berlin, NY 13843.

EDNA FRITTS NORWICH - Edna P. Fritts, 83, long-time resident of Norristown, Pa., and more recently of Norwich, passed away early Sunday morning, July 22, 2001 in the Chenango Memorial Hospital.

The daughter of Herman and Charlotte (Goessel) Schwiebert, Edna was born in Staten Island. She graduated, at the age of 16, from New Dorpt High School. On Jan. 16, 1937, in Hampton, N.J., she married Francis W. Fritts. Edna worked for many years as the secretary of the Calvary Baptist Church of Norristown, Pa., and spent numerous years as secretary of the United Way of Montgomery County, from which she retired. Following the death of her husband, Francis, in 1998, Edna moved to Norwich to make her home with her daughter.

Edna is survived by her daughters: Marilyn Kochersperger and her husband, Dr. Albert Kochersperger of Norwich; and Carolyn Fleckenstein of Wilmington, Delaware; and by five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Graveside committal services for Edna will be held on Aug. 11 from the Musconetcong Valley Cemetery of Hampton, N.J. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions be made to the Guernsey Memorial Library, 3 Court St., Norwich, NY 13815.
