NELLIE MOORE

MOUNT UPTON - Nellie Moore, 68, of Mt. Upton, passed away Sunday, July 22, 2001 at Binghamton General Hospital.

She was born Sept. 4, 1932, daughter of the late Merton and Leona Butler Mills in New Milford, Conn. Nellie liked to fish and was an avid bingo player.

She is survived by a son, John and Patricia Moore, of Mt. Upton; a daughter, Debrah Beach and Richard Conklin, Jr., of Smyrna; a good friend, "Bus" Glen Teelon, of East Guilford; a brother, Howard and Frances Mills, of Afton; sisters: Juanita and Laverne Charles, of Arizona, and Hazel Charles, of Masonville; a sister-in-law, Martha Schneider; 10 grandchildren; five great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by a brother, Orville Schneider and sister, Grace Winner.

Funeral service is at 11 a.m. July 26 at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Gerald Bovee of the First Baptist Church of Mt. Upton officiating. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Burial is in Hamletville Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Upton Emergency Squad.

JAMES MONTANYA SR.

NORWICH - James H. Montanya Sr., 65, of Norwich, passed away on Sunday, July 22, 2001 at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich. He was born on Oct. 16, 1935 in Oakland, N.J., the son of the late Paul L. and Margaret W. Winter Montanya Sr. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Joyce A. Peraino Montanya in 1977 and a brother, Paul L. Montanya Jr. in 1980.

He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Elizabeth Burgher Montanya of Norwich; his children: James H. Montanya Jr. of Winston-Salem, N.C.; Laurie Young and her husband Lawrence of Bainbridge; Jamie Carkees of Fly Creek; Victoria Miller of Norwich; Veronica Stacey and her husband David of Norwich; his grandchildren: Lawrence Young, Christopher Young, Joyce Carkees, Jamie Carkees, Nicole Robinson, Jeffrey Robinson, Adam Robinson, David Stacey Jr. April Stacey, and Angel Stacey; two nieces: Mary E. Montanya, and Debra M. Ward, both of Hartwick; one nephew: Paul J. Montanya of Bloomville; one great aunt: Jane Greene of New Jersey; and several cousins.

Mr. Montanya was a resident of the area for over 23 years coming from Oakland, N.J. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, and a mason's attendant prior to working with his brother Paul in auto body service. From 1990 to 2000, he was employed with the Oneonta Country club as a groundskeeper.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Bookhout Funeral Home 357 Main St. Oneonta. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until the time of services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Norwich Emergency Medical, c/o Fire Chief, l City Plaza Norwich, NY 13815 in loving memory of James.

MINNIE VANDEMARK

WALTON - Minnie E. VanDemark, 78, of Walton, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001 at M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

Mrs. VanDemark was employed as a sales clerk at family Shopping Center in Walton and had worked there over 40 years when she retired in 1990. She was born Jan. 31, 1923 in Walton to Percy and Anna (Wolf) Jackson. She was educated at Franklin. Mrs. VanDemark was a member of the First Congregational Church, Walton and a member of Al-Anon where she helped many people. Everyone will remember her for her smiling face and her helping hand and generosity.

Minnie VanDemark is survived by her daughters: Elizabeth Barber and Barbara Goad and her son, Myron VanDemark; brothers: Ambrose, William and Arthur Jackson; and sisters: Ruth Kelsey, Margaret Bailey and Catherine Ward.

Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the First Congregational Church, North Street, Walton, with the funeral service following at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Paul Cronin officiating. Burial is in Walton Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc., 102 Delaware St., Walton. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the First Congregational Church would be appreciated.

NORMA EBERT

NORWICH - Norma A. Ebert, 65, of Ponderosa Lane, passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2001 at the Chenango Memorial Hospital Extended Care Facility, Norwich, following a long illness.

Born Feb. 19, 1936 in Norwich, she was the daughter of Stanley and Mildred Beagle Maxwell. On June 21, 1952, Norma married Raymond Ebert in Sherburne. He predeceased her on March 11, 1990. Mrs. Ebert had been a Norwich resident for the past 17 years, and had previously lived in Earlville and Smyrna. She had worked at Cheseborough Ponds in Sherburne for 19 years. She was an avid camper and loved animals.

Mrs. Ebert was dedicated to her family and is survived by two sons, Donald Ebert of Sherburne and Douglas Ebert of Norwich; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna Parker and Fred Creighton of Sherburne; her step-father, Stanley Maxwell of Sherburne; a sister-in-law, Isabella Ebert of Chiefland, Fla.; nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday from the Burgess Funeral Home, 10 South Main St., Sherburne. Interment will be in the West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne.

Friends are invited and may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday prior to the service.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, 13815; or to the patient fund of Chenango Memorial Hospital Extended Care Facility, 179 North Broad St., Norwich 13815.

HARRIET CONNELLY

NORWICH - Harriet F. Connelly, 73, of East Main Street, Norwich, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday morning, July 25, 2001.

Harriet was born in Dimock, Pa., on Sept. 14, 1927, the daughter of Carl B. and Lena (Bailey) Fuller. After her education in the Dimock schools, she attended the Utica School of Cosmetology, from which she graduated in 1948. Harriet spent the next five years working with her sister, Gladys Godfrey, in Gladys' beauty shop. Harriet then became employed by the Norwich Shoe Company, where she worked for the next 37 years as a machine operator, retiring in 1990.

On Aug. 28, 1949, in Norwich, Harriet married Clark L. Connelly. In the mid-1950's, they built a camp on Eaton Brook Reservoir, which they enjoyed staying in during the summers. Harriet was a member of the Broad Street United Methodist Church.

Harriet is survived by her husband of over 50 years, Clark Connelly of Norwich; by her sisters: Helen Waters of Montrose, Pa., Doris Reed of Battleboro, N.C., and Joyce Stone of Florida; and by her brother: Miles Fuller of Cleveland, Ohio. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law: Lucille Fuller of Dimock, Pa., and Muriel Connelly of Oneida; by her brothers-in-law: Don Connelly of Oneida and George Godfrey of Norwich; and by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her sister, Gladys Godfrey, and her brother, Clark Fuller.

Funeral services for Harriet will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday from the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Morrisville Rural Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions be made to the SPCA, 6160 County Road 32, Norwich, NY 13815, or to the Broad St. United Methodist Church, 74 North Broad St., Norwich, NY 13815.

RAYMOND WEBB

PITTSFIELD - Raymond W. Webb, 80, of Pittsfield died July 25, 2001 in Norwich.

He was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada to Ernest and Bertha (Ashley) Webb. He married Vera J. Stratton on Oct. 15, 1944, who predeceased him on Nov. 18, 1995. He spent his childhood in the Ketchum and Pittsfield area and attended the Ketchum School and Morris Central School. He owned and operated Ray's Market in Norwich and was a manager at Matthew's Clothing Store also in Norwich. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1941-1943 surviving the Pearl harbor attract. He was a member of the American Legion Post #348, New Berlin. He enjoyed building bird houses, camping, hunting, fishing and the outdoors.

He is survived by his children: Brian and Linda Webb, of Richfield Springs, Lenny and Colleen Webb, of Hartwick, Leslie Webb, of Grafton and Morris L. Webb, of New Berlin; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren; a brother, Sidney and Dorothy Webb, of Arcadia, Fla. He was predeceased by three brothers: Harold, Charles and Wallace.

The funeral is at 11 a.m. Monday, July 30 at the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin. Interment is a Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin. Viewing is at 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 and 9 p.m. Sunday at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin, or the Pittsfield Emergency Squad, New Berlin.

MCDONOUGH - Edith Nightengale of Old Pharsalia Lane, McDonough died Thursday, July 26, 2001 at Gilmour Health Facility, Norwich. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford. A complete obituary will be published in the Monday edition of The Evening Sun.
