DONALD GAGE (1 of 2)

MT. UPTON - Donald R. Gage, 77, long-time resident of County Road 37, Mt. Upton, passed away early Saturday morning, Sept. 29, 2001 in The Hospital of Sidney.

Born and raised in New Berlin, Don attended the New Berlin school, but left school early to enter the United States Army. He served his country as a medic from 1943 until his discharge in 1946, seeing service in the Philippines and Okinawa. Following his discharge, Don returned home to New Berlin. In his early working years, he was a bartender for the Eagles Club of Norwich, and also worked for Lily White in Sherburne, the Ed McGowan Construction Company, and Bennett Ireland. His longest and most recent employment was with Bendix in Sidney, known now as Amphenol, where he worked as a machinist, retiring in 1985 after about 30 years of service. In the early 1960's, Don moved to his present home in Mt. Upton. He was a life member and past Commander of VFW Post #2782 of Norwich, as well as a former member of the Moose Club and Norwich Elks Lodge #1222.

Born Oct. 26, 1923, Don was the son of Elden and Martha (Prosser) Gage. On June 4, 1966, in Norwich, he married Isabelle Church Moon Gage, who survives. Besides his wife Isabelle, Don is survived by his children: Donald (Butch) Gage and wife Dawn of Gilbertsville, Alan Gage and wife Monia of East Rochester, Christine Yelton and husband Dean of Alexandria, Va.; and his step-daughter, Gloria Jean Moon Oliver and her husband Roland of Albuquerque, N.M. He is also survived by three sisters: Geneva Torrey and husband Avery of Cincinnatus, Dora Gage of Crossville, Ala., and Phyllis Palmer of New Berlin; three brothers: Arthur Gage and wife Mary of Leminster, Mass; Alfred Gage and wife Carolyn of New Berlin; and Richard Gage and wife Elaine of Columbus; brothers- and sisters-in-law: Richard and Betsy Church of South New Berlin, Dudley and Marion Church of South New Berlin, Archie and Carry Church of South Otselic, Lillian and Gene Long of South Carolina, and Inez Church of Sherburne; a step-grandson, Kyle Oliver of Albuquerque, N.M.; and by 11 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services for Don will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Rebekah Sweet, pastor of the Broad St. United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment with full military rites will follow in the Maplewood Cemetery of Mt. Upton. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to one's favorite charity.

MT. UPTON - Funeral services for Donald Gage were held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Rebekah Sweet, pastor of the Broad Street United Methodist Church, officiated.

Interment with full military rites followed in the Maplewood Cemetery of Mt. Upton with Rev. Sweet offering the committal prayers.

Military rites were accorded the deceased veteran by members of local veterans organizations under the direction of Squad Commander Bill Ballin. Members of the Color Guard were: Joe Benenati, Harry Gibson, Joe Fellin and Ken McNitt. Firing Squad members were: Don Dibble, Bob Kappauf and Pete McGowan. The flag was folded by Joe Benenati, Harry Gibson and Bill Ballin with Joe Benenati presenting the flag to Don's widow, Isabelle Gage. Bugler for the service was Brian Bonnell.

Pallbearers were: Steve Gage, Stacy Gage, Joel R. Deuzn, William Kellum, Frank Rivenburgh and James Gage.

HUBERT VIDLER

NORWICH - Hubert L. Vidler, 80, life-long Norwich resident, passed away late Friday evening, Sept. 28, 2001 in the Chenango Memorial Hospital.

Hubert was born and raised in Norwich. Following his education in the Norwich schools, he entered the United States Army to serve his country as a sergeant in World War II, from July of 1942 until his honorable discharge in November of 1946. For a brief period prior to entering the service, Hubert had worked for the Norwich Pharmacal Company. Upon returning home from the military, he resumed that employment, where he continued for over 40 years, retiring as a foreman in the Shipping Dept. Well-liked by his co-workers and everyone that knew him, Hubert was known to be a hard worker and an easy-going sort of guy who liked to laugh. Over the years, and especially following his retirement, Hubert and his family enjoyed spending their summers at cottages they owned, first on Chase Lake in Lowville and later on Cayuga Lake.

Born Aug. 9, 1921, in Norwich, Hubert was the son of Richard L. and Helen (Todd) Vidler. On July 8, 1944, In St. Luke's Church in Coventry, England, he married Joan Ashby, who survives. Besides his wife Joan, of Norwich, Hubert is survived by his sons: Russell Leslie Vidler and his wife Kim of Spencer, and Reginald Graham Vidler and his wife Mary Ann of Norwich; by five grandchildren: Shanee and Kirstin Vidler, both of Norwich; Vanessa Consalvi of Geneva; and Lesley Vidler and Russell T. Vidler, both of Ithaca; and by one great granddaughter, Donnally Consalvi. He is also survived by two brothers: William Vidler of Sherburne Four-Corners, and Edward Vidler of Vero Beach, Fla.; and by nieces and nephews. Hubert was predeceased by his son, Thomas William Vidler, in 1960.

Services for Hubert will be private and at the convenience of the family, with interment in Mt. Hope Cemetery of Norwich. Memorial contributions may be made to the Residential Health Care Facility, c/o Chenango Memorial Hospital, 179 North Broad St., Norwich, NY, 13815; or to the Norwich Emergency Squad, marked "Emergency Medical," c/o Fire Chief, One City Plaza, Norwich, NY 13815.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the staff, nurses, and aides of Chenango Memorial for the wonderful care and thoughtfulness given to Hubert and his family during his time in the hospital.

FIDEL MACALALAD, M.D.

NORWICH - Fidel V. Macalalad, M.D., of Merrill St., Norwich, passed away Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, following an extended illness.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., from St. Paul's Catholic Church, with Rev. Douglas Cunningham, pastor, officiating. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday from 3-6 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Michelle Macalalad's scholarship fund, with checks made payable to "University at Albany Foundation," and mailed to Ms. Nancy Negron, 1400 Washington Avenue, Campus Center 137, Albany, New York 12222.

FIDEL MACALALAD, M.D.

NORWICH - A Mass of Resurrection for Fidel V. Macalalad, M.D. was held on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. from St. Paul's Catholic Church with the Rev. Douglas Cunningham, pastor, officiating. The readings were proclaimed by Bridget Hannan with John Tiquin serving as the altar server. Organist for the service was Mary Ward with Antoinette Perkins as the soloist.

Arrangements were by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.

FANNIE ADAMS

NORWICH - Funeral services for Fannie Adams were held on Friday at 1 p.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Rebekah Sweet, pastor of the Broad Street United Methodist Church, officiated. Interment followed in the North Norwich Cemetery.

EDMUND CLARK

HAMILTON - Edmund Daniel Clark, 89, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001 at his home in Hamilton. Ed was born Dec. 5, 1911 in Huntington, Conn. to Edward M. and Mary Rose (Powers) Clark. He had hoped to celebrate his 90th birthday as did his father and grandfather before him. Ed graduated from Stockbridge High School and from Syracuse University Class of 1937, majoring in journalism. He was leader of the first draft group to leave Madison County for the Armed Service in 1940. Beginning as an infantry private at Fort Dix, he was stationed at several military bases including the Philippines before discharge as a captain in 1946.

Clark was treasurer (and later president) of the Munnsville Limestone Corporation for over fifty years; he served as president of the New York Lime Association and its delegate to the New York State Agricultural Businessmen's Council. He also served on the Executive Board of the State Insurance Fund for Workmen's Compensation and as president of the Agricultural Small Business Commission.

A resident of Hamilton since 1949 and a part-time resident of Punta Gorda, Fla. for the last 15 years, Ed served nine years on the Village Board and as Village Mayor from 1961 to 1965. With the president of Colgate University, he established and served on the first College Community Relations Committee. He was a member of St. Mary's Church, the Elks Club, the Colgate Club of the Chenango Valley, The Maroon Council, the Hamilton Club, and the Long Range Planning Committee for the Village. He served on the boards of the Hamilton Historical Commission, Community Memorial Hospital, the Madison County Housing Development Commission, and the Fryer Museum of Munnsville. He also served as director of the Friends of the Colgate Library.

Ed is survived by his wife, Lois Lee (McClain) Clark of Elk City, Okla., a former teacher in the Hamilton School system, and a son, Daniel M. Clark. Also surviving is a sister, Cecelia McLaughlin of Arcadia, Florida, as well as five nieces and five nephews. Ed and Lois Lee traveled extensively around the world; he was considered an authority on the geology and prehistoric natives of Central New York. Ed was a colorful storyteller; he loved to read and recite poetry. He was also an avid angler, with a wonderful sense of humor. Ed enriched the lives of all who knew him.

Contributions may be made in Ed's name to Community Memorial Hospital or to the Southern Madison Ambulance Corps (SOMAC). A Memorial Service is planned for Sunday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m., at First Baptist Church, Hamilton. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Burgess Funeral Home, 25 Broad St. Hamilton.

DONALD HORTON

COLUMBUS - Donald Earl Horton, 87, of Columbus, died on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001 while in residence at Harding Nursing Home in Waterville.

Born on Nov. 9, 1913 in the family home on Columbus Hill to Ovid and Mary (Frair) Horton, he attended the district school in Columbus, and then Sherburne High School. Donald married Jessie Maine on Aug. 14, 1937, and settled in the Horton family home. They had two children, Earl and Janice. He ran the family farm until 1976, when he retired. In retirement, Donald enjoyed gardening, especially flowers, and visiting with his family.

Donald is survived by his wife, Jessie, currently residing at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin; his son and daughter-in-law, Earl and Clara Horton of Sherburne; his daughter, Janice Horton of Hamilton; his granddaughters: Donna (Horton) Moren of Sherburne and Michelle Horton-Benenati of Norwich; great-grandchildren: Heather Benenati, Austin Benenati, James Moren and Marie Moren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters: Jessie Wynn, Blanche Beesmer, Frances Calhoun, May Reese Taylor and Elizabeth Angell and his brothers: Erza Horton and Harold Horton.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today from the Burgess Funeral Home, 10 South Main St., Sherburne, followed by interment in the West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne.

Friends are invited and may call at the funeral home from noon until 2 p.m. today prior to the service.
