ANTOINETTE TARANTO (1 of 2)

NORWICH - Antoinette J. Taranto, 85, of Route 23, Norwich, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001 at her home.

Born Nov. 26, 1915 in Utica, she was the daughter of Frank and Rosa (Prestipino) Angelino. She moved to Norwich at a young age and attended the local schools. Leaving school to help her family, she worked a short time for the former fish line company on East Main Street as well as the silk mill, Fishman's and Victory Markets. Antoinette stayed home to raise her children, but also found time to help her husband in the operation of the O&W Supermarket for 30 years.

Antoinette was a member of St. Bartholomew's Church and of the Rosary Society. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting during her leisure hours as well as other crafts. She had knitted many sweaters and afghans for everyone in her family.

She devoted her adult life to her family, especially her husband of 68 years, Coney Taranto of Norwich. She was much loved and will be greatly missed by her daughters: Joanne Baker of Norwich, Rose Scozzafava and her husband John of Potomac, Md., and Marie Kirwin and her husband William of Baltimore, Md.; a daughter-in-law, Sandy Taranto of Detroit, Mich.; four grandchildren: Colene Barbaro of Dallas, Texas, Kathryn Scozzafava of Newport, R.I., Marielana Suarez of Baltimore, Md., and John Scozzafava of Chicago, Ill.; three great grandchildren: Avery, Kristen and G. Paul Barbaro, all of Dallas. She was predeceased by her beloved son, Bart Taranto, in April; two brothers, Joseph and Charles Angelino and three sisters: Jennie Angelino, Concetta Bianchi and Mary Watts.

Funeral services for Mrs. Taranto will be held on Wednesday beginning with a prayer service at the Devine-Wilson Memorial Home at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Resurrection in St. Bartholomew's Church at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Paul's Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. Members of the St. Bartholomew's Rosary Society will recite the rosary at 6:45 p.m.

Contributions in memory of Mrs. Taranto may be made to the Hemodialysis Unit of Binghamton General Hospital, 27 Park Avenue, Part 3, Binghamton, N.Y. 13903.

NORWICH - Funeral services for Antoinette J. Taranto were held on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001 beginning with a prayer service at the Devine-Wilson Memorial Home led by Rev. Douglas Cunningham, pastor of St. Bartholomew's Church. Father Cunningham then celebrated a Mass of Resurrection at St. Bartholomew's. Mass began with Mrs. Taranto's husband, Coney, and her daughters Joanne, Rose and Marie placing a baptismal pall upon the casket. Joanne then placed her mother's rosary on the pall. The reading for the Mass were proclaimed by granddaughters: Kathryn Scozzafava and Colene Barbaro. Rose and John Scozzafava and Marie and Bill Kirwin presented the offertory gifts. The Eucharistic minister was Jane Casamento, the organist was Mary Ward and the soloist was Antoinette Perkins. Marielana Suarez spoke beautifully in remembrance of her grandmother.

Burial followed in St. Paul's Cemetery with Father Cunningham offering the committal prayers. The casket bearers were Joe Angelino, Richard Watts, Bart Taranto, Tom Suarez and Paul Barbaro.

On Tuesday evening at the Devine-Wilson Memorial Home, members of the St. Bartholomew's Rosary Society recited the rosary led by Mary Ann Bodiot and Mary Coe. The Rosary Society also served as honor guard during the Mass.

SUSAN CHAPMAN

McDONOUGH - Susan R. Chapman, 48, of McDonough died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, after a lengthy battle with cancer, while surrounded by her family.

Susan was born in Auburn on Sept. 16, 1953, the daughter of Leslie and Catherine Craft Brewer. She was a 1972 graduated of Westmoreland High School and was employed at GC Controls, Smithville Flats. She attended the German Baptist Church.

She is survived by her mother, Catherine (Ron) Nelson of Cincinnatus; her father, Leslie (Catherine) Brewer of McDonough; twin daughters, Elizabeth and Rebecca Chapman, both of Oxford; brothers: David Brewer of McDonough, Roger Brewer of Wyoming, Richard Brewer of Pennsylvania and John Brewer of Pennsylvania; sisters: Kathy Stoker of Colorado and Deatta Decker of Pennsylvania. She also is survived by stepdaughters: Amber and Kelly of Wyoming; a half-brother, Leslie Brewer, Jr., of McDonough; half-sister, Deborah Law of North Carolina; stepbrothers: Robert Wilcox of Norwich and Donald Wilcox of Pennsylvania; stepsisters: Kathy Barnett of Binghamton and Patti Cummings of North Carolina; three step-grandchildren; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the German Baptist Church with Rev. David Seaver officiating. There will be no prior calling hours. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Susan may be directed to the American Cancer Society, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905 or the Hospice Foundation of Cortland County, 4281 North Homer Avenue, Cortland, N.Y. 13045. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Black Funeral Home, Cincinnatus.

DR. JOHN McCONKEY

SOUTH NEW BERLIN - Dr. John X. McConkey, 76, formerly of Oswego, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001 in Pennsylvania.

Born in Oswego, son of the late Joseph and Emma Schneider McConkey. He attended Rochester schools, received his bachelor of education from Oswego State, dual masters of education and history from the Maxwell School of Syracuse University and doctorate in history at Syracuse. He was vice president of Dowling College, Oakdale, Long Island, from 1969 to 1978 and president of Lackawanna Junior College, Scranton, from 1979 to 1985.

A Navy veteran of World War II and Korea, he was a fourth degree Knight of Columbus, a member of Rotary and the New York State Retired Teachers Association.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Patricia Doyle in 1991 and two brothers, Joseph and James McConkey.

She is survived by two daughters: Sharon McConkey of Minersville, Penn., and Elizabeth McConkey of South New Berlin; a brother, Robert, of Rochester; two grandchildren: John and Jessica Schumann, Minersville; a great-granddaughter, Linda Johns, Minersville and several nieces and nephews.

Viewing at Dutcavich Funeral Home, Minersville, Pa., from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Mass is at 10 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Church, Minersville. Further services will be at noon Friday from St. Mary Church, Oswego. Interment is at St. Peter Cemetery, Oswego.

RUSSELL WHITE

SOUTH NEW BERLIN - Russell C. White, 73, of South New Berlin died Oct. 1, 2001 in South New Berlin.

He was born June 9, 1928 in Norwich to Ralph and Catherine (Chapin) White. He married Ruth Elaine (Ganoung) White on Nov. 28, 1953 in Mt. Rose, Pa. She predeceased him on June 17, 1985.

He was a retired employee of DHIA.

He is survived by two daughters: Susan and Jerry Burgess of Barstow, Fla., and Cindy Holbert of Edmeston; one son, David and Kelly White of Pineville, La.; six grandchildren: Russell Burgess of Bloomington, Ill., Jason Burgess of Alpharetta, Ga., Erin and Nathan Holbert of Edmeston and Tucker and Taylor White of Pineville, La.; two great grandchildren: Jessica Burgess of Bloomington, Ill., and Brooke Burgess of Alpharetta, Ga., and one brother, Donald White of South New Berlin.

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Friday at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin. Rev. Romeyn Kipp of the Holmesville Baptist Church, New Berlin, is officiation. Interment is at Riverside Cemetery, South New Berlin.

Viewing is from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Russell will be missed by his friends and especially by all of his loved ones.

ELIZABETH CHRISTMAN

NORWICH - Elizabeth S. "Betty" Christman, 92, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001 at Chenango Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 25, 1908 in West Colesville, she was the daughter of Harry C. and Nellie S. (Fling) Scudder. Her father, Harry, was the former Broome County Sheriff. Betty grew up in Binghamton and worked for a short time at the former Fowler's Department Store. During the 1940s and 1950s, she was active in the Red Cross, PTA, civil defense and, for many years, as a nurse's aide. As a private duty nurse, she was accomplished in the Sister Kenney treatment for polio.

Betty loved to travel and had visited Europe, Bermuda and Tahiti as well as many sites in the United States. She also enjoyed gardening, crocheting and needlepoint. She was an avid reader.

On Jan. 30, 1930, in Binghamton, she married Robert N. Christman, who died on March 1, 1978.

She is survived by her son, Douglas S. Christman, his wife, Mary Lou and their children, Patrick Ford of Northwood, N.H., and Michael Ford of Norwich; her two grandchildren: Elizabeth Christman of Baltimore, Md., and Ann Christman of Los Angeles, Calif.; a brother, Robert Scudder and his wife, Jo, of Endwell; and nephews: Robert Scudder of Norwich, David Scudder of Binghamton and Henry Scudder of Norwich. She also is survived by a niece, Eleanor Chisholm, a cousin, Evelyn Purdy of Norwich and special friends, Joan and Greg Brustowicz. She was predeceased by an infant sister and brother, Franklin Scudder.

Funeral services for Mrs. Christman will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Devine-Wilson Memorial Home, Norwich. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Saturday from noon until the time of the service. Burial will take place in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

SOUTH NEW BERLIN - Committal services with full military rites for Helen Austin, who passed away June 1, 2001, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday from the Riverside Cemetery in South New Berlin. Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.

JAMES LANGMAN

OXFORD - Dr. James H. "Doc" Langman, 78, of Orefield, Pa., and formerly of Oxford, died Nov. 1, 2001 at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury, Penn.

He was born in Rudd, Iowa to the late Jessie Allen Swartwood Langman and Louis H. Langman and attended Oxford Academy. He was a 1946 graduate of Cornell University Veterinary College in Ithaca.

He was employed as a veterinarian in Oxford from 1946-1959 and worked at Maple Hills Veterinary Hospital, Allentown, Penn from 1960-1978. He also worked at the Country Dr. Veterinary Clinic from 1984-2001 in Orefield, Penn. He was in the Army and served in World War II.

He is survived by his sons: Jesse Langman, of Allentown, Pa., Kevin Langman, of Knoxville, Tenn., and Theodore Langman of Stafford, Va.; his daughters: Sandy Langman of Port Charlotte, Fla., Valerie Preston of North Port, Fla., Susan Walchok of North Port, Fla., and Kay Wagner; and a sister, Dorothy Pugliese of Falls River, Mass. He also is survived by his 10 grandchildren; six great grandchildren and nephews.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Weisenberg Lutheran Church, 7645 Weisenberg Church Road, New Tripo, Pan. Calling hours are from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6 at the Keller Funeral Home, 1018 Church St., Fogelsville, Pa. Interment is on Wednesday at the Weisenberg Lutheran Church Cemetery in New Tripoli.
