KENNETH PHILLIPS
NORWICH - Funeral services for Kenneth R. Phillips were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001 from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. Richard Wright, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Norwich Branch presided with Peter Mennis giving the closing prayer. Interment followed in the South Plymouth Cemetery with the dedication of the grave given by Richard Wright.
Pall bearers were: Sheldon Rose, Rick Cross, Donald Rose, Lauren Phillips, David Rose and Chuck Rose.
MARTIN WILLIAMS
NORWICH - Martin E. Williams, 86, died at the Alice Hyde Hospital in Malone on Nov. 5, 2001.
Martin was the father of three children, two deceased and one living. He lived in the Norwich area from 1970-1982, then he moved to Ellenburg where he lived with his son, Lewis Martin Williams and daughter-in-law, Faith Williams.
He married Mary Elizabeth Lot on Sept. 6, 1937 in Grace Episcopal Church in Waverly. Mary died in June of 1982. He was employed by the US Steel Company in Elmira for 10 to 12 years when he received job injuries and had to retired from work.
He was a veteran of World War II, US Army 1943-1945. He received Silver Star for Bravery. He served in Ardennes, Central Europe, Northern France and Rhineland. He received the service medal, good conduct medal and World War II victory medal.
He was military police and MI Rifleman. Coming back home in December 1945 he bought a farm in Barton and lived there for several years. He was predeceased by two brothers and one sister.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Nov. 10 at William W. Kehoe Funeral Home, Sherburne. Burial will be in the North Norwich Cemetery.
ROSE HUMPHREY
SHERBURNE - Rose C. Humphrey, 94, formerly of Summit St., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001 at the NYS Veterans Home, Oxford.
Services will be announced at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Burgess Funeral Home, 10 South Main St., Sherburne.
DOROTHY SMITH

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am there ye may be also. And wither I go ye know, and the way ye know." (John 14:1-4)
NORWICH - Dorothy Alberta Gray Smith, 80, of Norwich, went to her eternal home Wednesday noon, Nov. 7, 2001.
Born Oct. 9, 1921, in the town of Hamden, N.Y., Dorothy was the daughter of Ernest and Josie Allen Gray. On Nov. 30, 1940, she was united in marriage to Donald Willard Smith. Dorothy and her husband moved to Norwich in 1946 to work and raise their family. She joined the First Baptist Church of Norwich in 1956, and continued to be a faithful member until her death.
Dorothy worked for 21 years for the Norwich City School System in the high school cafeteria, until her retirement in 1985. During her retirement, she devoted her time to transporting her many friends, volunteering at the First Baptist Church, and being an active member of the many women’s groups in the church. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Her beautiful smile and sense of humor will be deeply missed by all who knew Dorothy.
Dorothy is survived by her three sons and their wives: Robert D. and Sandra Smith of Norwich, James W. and Virginia Smith of Chittenango, Edward L. and Dorothy Smith of North Norwich; and her daughter, Sandy Smith of Norwich. She is also survived by her precious grandchildren: Robert S. Smith and Sabrina of North Carolina, Stephen E. Smith and Christy of No. Carolina, James A. and Tanya Smith of North Carolina, Karen B. and Gregg Beckwith of North Norwich, Tiffany R. Smith and fiance Christian Roher of Albany, Kimberly S. and Scott Begeal of Oxford, and Jeffrey D. Emerson of Syracuse. Also surviving are Dorothy’s cherished great grandchildren: Stacia L. and Hope K. Beckwith, Brittany L. Smith, Rhiannon K., Hayden S., Morrigan K. Begeal and Anna; her sister and brother-in-law, Joyce A. and James Ryan of South Carolina; her brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Joan Gray of North Carolina; several nephews and a niece and their children; and two very special friends: Evelyn Griffin and Virginia Reid. Dorothy was
predeceased by her husband, Donald, in 1969; by her sister, Geraldine in 1928; and by both of her parents.
A memorial service honoring Dorothy’s life will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. from the First Baptist Church of Norwich, with Rev. Rebekah Sweet officiating. There will be no calling hours. Burial will take place in the Walton Cemetery, Walton.

OSCAR HOWE
OXFORD - Born April 7, 1925, the son of Elmer A. Howe and Josie Buchanon Howe in Prepacton, Oscar E. Howe died Nov. 5, 2001 at the N.Y.S. Veterans’ Home in Oxford.
He was a veteran of World War II. He spent most of his life in the Sidney Center and Unadilla area. He worked most of his life in the construction business. He worked at Bendix for a few years. He loved to camp, fish and hunt. Oscar loved his family dearly and loved to have them around as well as his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include: Gladys Bartlett beloved companion; sons: Ron and Cyndy Howe of Locke and Rick and Kim Howe of Venice Center; daughters: Kathleen and Chet Carr of Bainbridge; Janice and John Harrison of West Laurens, JoAnna and Richard Lata of Reidsville, N.C., and Lori Howe and fiance Rick Dennis of Vestal; sisters: Myrtle and Kenneth Kinne, Ruth and Richard Bristol and Isabelle Cawley, all of Sidney Center, and Marjorie and Clifton Steele of Florida; and brothers: Kenneth and Charlene Howe of Masonville and Jesse and Rose Howe of Harpursville.
He was predeceased by Sarah Howe Earle, wife and mother of his children; a brother, Raymond Howe; sister, Helen Bristol and an infant sister, Clarisse. He also is survived by 15 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
As per Oscar’s requests there will be no funeral services. He will be cremated and laid to rest at a later date.
A Celebration of Oscar’s life will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Nov. 9 at the West Laurens Fire House, West Laurens where family will be in attendance.

DOROTHY HALL
NORWICH - Dorothy Dawn Hall, 64, of Norwich, passed away Saturday morning, Nov. 10, 2001 at her home, with her family at her side.
Born on Jan. 17, 1937, in Norwich, Dorothy was the daughter of Kenneth C. and Mildred (Thompson) Frink. On May 29, 1954, Dorothy married David H. Hall, who survives. Dorothy was a life-long resident of Norwich, and a graduate of the Norwich High School Class of 1955. Over the years, she had worked for Victory Markets, in the cafeteria of the Norwich City School, and for HGH Construction. Dorothy had also been a volunteer for the Pink Door Hospital Auxiliary since 1980. A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Dorothy found great joy in spending most of her life raising her five children. She was an animal lover all of her life, who enjoyed feeding and watching the birds at her home.
Dorothy was a member of the United Church of Christ of Norwich, a long-time member of the Norwich Chapter #367 Order of the Eastern Star and of the Lafayette Chapter #340 Order of the Eastern Star of Oxford. She will long be remembered for her beautiful smile and her sense of humor, which will be deeply missed.
Besides David, her husband of 47 years, Dorothy is survived by her five children and their spouses: Deborah Dawn Baston and husband Keith of Loveland, Ohio; Denise Ann Phillips and husband Rick of Oxford; Donna Dee Murphy and husband Michael of Norwich; DeAnn Dawn Cummings and husband Shawn of Norwich; and Darren David Hall and wife Lisa of Norwich; and by her fourteen grandchildren: Heather Greenwood, John Greenwood, Thomas Phillips, Joseph Phillips, Hannah Murphy, Amanda Nichols, Ashley Nichols, Alisha Cummings, Sierra Cummings, Timothy Hall, Zackery Hall, Devean Crandall, Alyssa Crandall, and Hailey Mae Hall.
Memorial services for Dorothy will be held on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. from the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Allen Lang, Pastor of the United Church of Oxford, will officiate. Friends may call at the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6 to 7 p.m. At 7, members of the Lafayette Chapter #340 Order of the Eastern Star and members of the Norwich Chapter #367 Order of the Eastern Star will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home.

VERA INGHAM
GUILFORD - Vera A. Ingham, 84, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and long-time Guilford resident, passed away peacefully late Friday evening, Nov. 9, 2001 in the Sidney Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Vera grew up in the South New Berlin -Holmesville area. In 1946, Vera and her family moved to Guilford, where they operated their farm until 1969. A loving and hard-working woman, Vera helped her family work their farm for many years, enjoying the out of doors and, over the years, learned to be an excellent mechanic. She could often be seen repairing a piece of the farm machinery. Following the death of her husband in 1969, the farm was sold, but Vera still remained active and kept her independence, enjoying her family.
Born June 14, 1917, in Cleveland, Ohio, Vera was the daughter of Walter and Josephine (Thompson) Bailey. On June 25, 1938, in Holmesville, she married Wright (Zeke) Ingham, who passed away July 17, 1369.
Vera is survived by her children and their spouses: Theodore (Ted) Ingham of Guilford, and his companion Barb Wakeman; Carol and Francis Hubbard of Guilford; Charles and Ramona Ingham of Guilford; Sheila and Robert Nightengale of Oxford; Mark and Roberta Ingham of Oxford; and a "special daughter," Beatrice Eastwood of Unadilla. Nineteen grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. Besides her husband Zeke, Vera was predeceased by a step-son, John "Jack" Ingham Brownson.
Funeral services for Vera will be held on Tuesday at 1 p.m. from the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. David Masland, pastor of the Sidney United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Riverside Cemetery of South New Berlin. Friends may call at the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m.
