PHYLLIS BAKER

OXFORD - Phyllis Baker, (Molly), 70, formerly of North Road, Oxford, and most recently of County Road 4, Oxford, passed away early Friday morning, Nov. 9, 2001 in the Chenango Memorial Hospital of Norwich.

Born in Norwich, Phyllis grew up in the Norwich area and had attended the Norwich schools. She and her family had made their home in Downingtown, Pa. for 20 years before moving back to the Oxford area to live on the North Road of Oxford. In earlier years Phyllis had been employed by the Chenango Memorial Hospital. She loved Nascar racing, and was truly devoted to her family, to whom she was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Born April 11, 1931, in Norwich, Phyllis was the daughter of Clifford and Edessa (Crosby) Brooks. On Aug. 23, 1949, in South Otselic, she married Ernest Baker (Bake), who passed away in September of 1997. Phyllis is survived by her children and their spouses: Ernie Baker of Downingtown, Pa.; Terry Baker and his wife SueAnne of Foloroft, Pa.; David Baker of Voorhees, N.J.; Jeff Baker and his wife Gerry of No. Carolina; Kim Broyles and her husband Sonny of Elverson, Pa.; Teena McCall and her husband Lester of Downingtown, PA; Kelly Stringham and her husband Steve of Sweetwater, Tenn.; Charlotte Carman and her husband Kip of Oxford; and Tracey Stein and her husband Chuck of Preston; and one brother, John Brooks. Twenty-one grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Besides her husband Ernest, Phyllis was predeceased by her brother and sister, Clifford Brooks and Beverly Brooks.

Services for Phyllis will be at the convenience of the family, with interment to take place in the Warn Ten Broeck Cemetery of Brisben. Memorial contributions may be made to the Preston Rescue Squad and mailed to William Ahearn, Treas., 205 South Road, Norwich, NY 13815.

Arrangements are by the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home.

MARY LOU MARVIN

NORWICH - Funeral services for Mary Lou Marvin were held on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001 at 11 a.m. from the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tom Taylor officiating.

Interment followed in the North Norwich Cemetery, with Rev. Taylor offering the committal prayers.

CHARLES MUNYAN

OXFORD - Charles B. Munyan, 59, formerly of Oxford and Afton, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001 at The Waters, Endicott.

He was born on June 16, 1942 in Norwich the son of the late Clarence and E. Elizabeth (Burns) Munyan.

He is survived by his step mother, Mildred Reynolds Munyan of Afton; his daughter, Mary Reigles of Oxford; his son, C.J. Munyan of Utica; his grandchildren: Deanna Reigles and Samantha Reigles and his niece, Elaine Sapp of Utica.

Charlie attended Oxford Academy and Central School. He was a long time member of the United Church of Oxford and has been an usher for many years. He had operated a barbershop in Oxford for many years. He enjoyed history and was a member of the Historical Society and enjoyed helping at their booth at the fair. He had been a resident of The Waters for several years, where he enjoyed the activities, especially bingo. He was very appreciative of the care that he received at The Waters. He was always jovial, even during his illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday from the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford with the Rev. Ernest A. Steffensen officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Oxford.

Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford from 1 p.m. until the time of the service Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Afton Historical Society, c/o Patricia Stafford, 215 Main St., Oxford, N.Y. 13730.

LOUIS STEFFEN

NORWICH - Louis M. Steffen, 79, of Franklin, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001 at the AO Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born May 18, 1922 in Franklin the son of Roland L. and Florence E. (Robinson) Steffen. He was first married to Grace Wagner on Sept. 3, 1944 and she passed away on Nov. 6, 1990. On Nov. 13, 1994 he married Ester Ingalls.

For a period of 35 years, Louie was employed at ECD Bendix in Sidney. He retired in 1984 as a machinist.

He was a member of the Franklin Community Bible Church; a life member of the Franklin Fire Department and Emergency Squad; and for a period of time, served on the Delaware County Board of Fire Commissioners. He also was a member of the Sidney Elk’s Club and the Ouleout Fish and Game Club.

Louie was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed hunting. After his retirement, he played a lot of golf, and was involved in several league.

He enjoyed the special times spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Esther P. Ingalls-Steffen of Franklin; his children and their spouses: Elizabeth Coleman and her Fiance Mark Day of Norwich, Richard L. and Susan Steffen of Clarksville, Tenn., and Susan and George Ruple of Sidney; six grandchildren: Stephanie Casey, Neil Coleman, Joshua Steffen, Jacob Steffen, Kimberly Doolittle and Kristin Stanley; four great grandchildren: Nicole and Meghan Casey, Dylan Steffen and Jack Doolittle; a brother, John Steffen of Bainbridge and a sister, Mary Jane Parsons of Sidney Center.

He also is survived by two step daughters: Kathleen Ingalls and Jane Lewis, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service to celebrate the life of Louis M. Steffen will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001 in the Franklin Community Bible Church with the Rev. Walter Schlundt, pastor officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Fire Department or Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home in Franklin.

HELEN BROWN

HAMILTON - Helen F. Brown, 88, of East Pleasant St., passed away Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001 at Community Memorial Hospital, Hamilton.

Born July 26, 1913 in Washington, D.C., she was a daughter of Frederick and Mabel Cushing Brown. She was a graduate of Newton Center High School, Newton Center, Mass., and the Massachusetts School of Art in Boston. On June 27, 1941, Helen was united in marriage to Bruce M. Brown in Garden City, L.I. He predeceased her on Dec. 4, 1999. Mrs. Brown was an art teacher at Hamilton Central School for many years. She had previously been the director of the Hamilton Cooperative Nursery School and taught at BOCES.

Mrs. Brown was a member of the Hamilton Garden Club, the Fort Nightly Club of Hamilton and the Chenango Bird Club at Rogers Environmental Center, Sherburne. She was a board member of the Madison Lane Apartments in Hamilton, and also had conducted exercises programs there.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Duncan and Nancy Brown of Walworth; two daughters and sons-in-law: Deborah and Roy Moon of Norwich and Laurie and Christopher Condit of Leverett, Mass.; a sister, Gladys Brown of North Hampton, Mass.; four grandchildren: Peter Brown of Waterloo, Elizabeth and Jeb Albro of Seneca Falls and Ian Brown and Cailey Condit, both of Leverett, Mass.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Hamilton Public Library, Hamilton, N.Y. 13346.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Burgess Funeral Home, 25 Broad St., Hamilton.

JOHN DALRYMPLE

COLUMBUS - John W. Dalrymple, 73, of RD #1, Pratt’s Hollow, Munnsville died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001 at Community Memorial Hospital following a motor vehicle accident south of Hamilton.

He was born on June 24, 1928 in Milford the son of Samuel L. and Edna Kelsey Dalrymple. John spent his early years in Columbus, living in Oneonta and South Edmeston before moving to Pratt’s Hollow 42 years ago.

He had worked at the Smith-Lee Company, Inc., in Oneida for 30 years, retiring in 1990.

John was a Korean War veteran, serving overseas with the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Munnsville American Legion Post #54. John enjoyed hunting and fishing and his hobby farm.

He married June M. Fairchild on Oct. 20, 1956 in Columbus.

Surviving besides his wife are: two sons: Kevin T. Dalrymple and Thomas O. Dalrymple, both of Pratt’s Hollow; two brothers and a sister-in-law: Samuel and Betty Dalrymple of Williamston, S.C., and Fred Dalrymple of Neillsville, Wis.; two sisters: Lucille Emerich of Clocksville and Virginia McKinney of Marshfield, Wis.; two grandchildren: John Wayne Dalrymple and Kayla Marie Dalrymple; several nieces, nephews and cousins. John was predeceased by two sisters: Barbara Cast and June DeForest.

Funeral services for John W. Dalrymple will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Ball Funeral Home, Munnsville. The Rev. Mary Morris of the Stockbridge United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Lenox Rural Cemetery, Canastota. Calling hours will be held from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, 5327 N. Main St., Munnsville. In his memory contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

DR. JOHN KERLEY

NORWICH - Dr. John K. Kerley, DDS, 92, a former resident of 158 East Sixth Street and more recently of Bishop Commons, Oswego, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001 in Oswego Hospital.

Dr. Kerley was born in Norwich and had been a resident of Norwich until moving to Oswego in 1989. Dr. Kerley was a graduate of Norwich High School and attended Niagara University and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania University in Dentistry. He went into private practice with the late J. Leo Weiler, DDA in Norwich, later having his own private practice.

Dr. Kerley served during World War II in the United State Army entering in 1942 as First Lieutenant serving in Fort Belvoir, Va., as a dental officer and departing in 1946 as Major. He was a life member of the American Dental Association, NYS Dental Society and the 6th district Dental Society. He was a member of the Chenango Memorial Hospital dental staff. Dr. Kerley was a charter member of the B.O.P.E., Norwich, he was a Honorary Life Member, past officer and cofounder of the Knights of Columbus Council #211. He was a charter member of the Norwich Chamber of Commerce, and a past member of the American Legion, Norwich.

Dr. Kerley was predeceased by his wives: Lauretta Kerley in 1952 and Esther Kerley in 1993.

He is survived by two sons: Theodore (Melissa) Kerley of Oswego and James (Donna) Kerley of Wesley, Mass.; two daughters: Janet E. Kerley of Falls Church, Va., and Sister Joan Kerley FMSJ of the office of campus ministry LeMoyne College; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Friday in St. Paul’s Church, Oswego. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Norwich. Arrangements are in the care of the Sugar and Scanlon Funeral Home, 147 West Fourth Street, Oswego.
