GERTRUDE SCHWIND

NORWICH - Gertrude Clara Schwind, 98, of Longmont, Colorado, and formerly of Norwich, passed away Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001 at her home in Longmont.

Born Oct. 15, 1908, in Selby, South Dakota, Gertrude was the daughter of Emil and Lena (Richard) Zurbruegg. In 1908, she and her family moved to Montana, where she lived until 1923, then moved to New York State to attend technical college. She worked for a time as a bookkeeper and, on Oct. 5, 1941, in Binghamton, Gertrude married Ernest A. Schwind. Following Ernest’s death in 1972, Gertrude relocated to Virginia in 1984 and to Colorado in 1987, continuing to live there for the rest of her years. She was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star in New York, and a member of the First Lutheran Church in Longmont.

Gertrude is survived by her sons: Richard and Jane Schwind of Central Square; David and Sue Schwind of Mead, Colo.; and William and Ann Schwind of Gordonsville, Va.; by two step-daughters: Paula and George Brannen of Wappingers Falls; and Dorothy Dopp of Fulton; her step-daughter-in-law: Peggy Schwind of Wappingers Falls; and six grandchildren John and Shannon Schwind of Mead, Colo.; Renee Schwind Ruzzo and husband Gary of New York; and Sara, Elizabeth, and Eric Schwind of Virginia. Numerous step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren also survive. Besides her husband, Ernest, Gertrude was predeceased by her brother, Albert; her sisters, Bertha, Olga, and Frieda; and her step-son, Ernest Schwind, Jr.

Funeral services for Gertrude will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. from the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. James Vargo will officiate, with interment to follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends may call at the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home on Friday from 7 to 9 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Christ Lutheran Church, 94 North Broad St., Norwich, NY 13815.

ROBERT O’KEEFE

OXFORD - Robert A. O’Keefe, 78, of Old Virginia Road, Oxford, passed away early Tuesday morning, Nov. 13, 2001 in the Chenango Memorial Hospital of Norwich.

Born on May 5, 1923, in Trinidad of the West Indies, Robert lived in Trinidad until the mid-1970’s, when he moved to the United States and settled in New York City. On June 5, 1975, he married Viola Dahl, who survives. While living in New York City, Robert worked as a pipe and steam fitter for Union #638. After retiring in 1989, Robert moved to the Oxford area, where he made his home until his death.

Besides his wife Viola, of Oxford, Robert is survived by his children: Shirley Wheeler of Georgia, Angela O’Keefe of Dominica, West Indies, and Dawson O’Keefe of Trinidad; and his step-children: Janet Fields of Norwich, James Harvey of Queens, Robert Harvey of Brooklyn, Arlene Russell of Queens, and Karen Harvey of Norwich. One sister, Ambrazine O’Keefe of Trinidad, several grandchildren and great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services and interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home.

VERA INGHAM

NORWICH - Funeral services for Vera Ingham were held on Tuesday afternoon at l p.m. from the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. David Masland, pastor of the Sidney United Methodist Church, officiated. Several of Vera’s family members and friends offered special remembrances of Vera. Vera’s granddaughter, Suzanne Robinson, was organist for the service.

Pall bearers were Vera’s sons: Ted, Mark, and Charles Ingham, Francis Hubbard, Bob Nightengale, and Shawn Ryan.

Interment followed in the Riverside Cemetery of South New Berlin, with Rev. Masland offering the committal prayers.

ANTHONY PAINO

NORWICH - Anthony C. Paino, 83, formerly of Clinton Street, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at the Chenango Memorial Hospital Residential Care Facility.

Tony was born in Norwich on Jan. 9, 1918 the son of John and Rose (Ferro) Paino. He was a life-long resident of Norwich and a member of St. Bartholomew’s Church. He will be remembered for his generosity to children. He was always smiling and was well known for shaking hands with many friends he met along the street and in the hospital.

He is survived by his sister, Lucy Miles of Norwich and his brother, John Paino, of St. Petersburg, Fla. Several nieces and nephews also survive. His parents; two sisters, Rose Bardoni and Mary G. Natoli, and a brother, George Paino, predeceased him.

A Mass of Resurrection for Tony will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Bartholomew’s Church. Burial will take place in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the Devine-Wilson Memorial Home from 7-9 p.m. Sunday. Mary Ann Bodiot, parish minister at St. Bartholomew’s, will recite the rosary with the family at 6:30 p.m.

E.W. CALLAHAN

NORWICH - E.W. "Bill" Callahan passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002 at Community General hospital in Syracuse. He was 77 years old.

Born in Syracuse on Dec. 27, 1924, he was the son of Edward F. Callahan and Genevieve Lundy Callahan. Bill was a decorated World War II veteran, earning the Bronze Star and a presidential citation while serving aboard the Balao class submarine, U.S.S. Bumper. On Feb. 26, 1949 he married Mildred "Mickey" Griffin, with whom he spent 42 wonderful years. In 1974 he began his own business, Cal’s Classics which featured pewter wildlife jewelry and figurines, which all revolved around his great love of the outdoors. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying many hours hunting, fishing & skeet shooting. In 1989 he was elected to the New York State Skeet Shooting Hall of Fame.

He was predeceased by his sister Ann, his first wife Mickey in 1991 and his second wife Barbara in 2000. He is survived by three children: a daughter, Cynthia & John DeLap of Bridgeport, a son, Bill & Ann Callahan of Norwich, a daughter, Colleen & Clay Bedore of Syracuse; five grandchildren: Maggie and Holly DeLap, Sean and Katie Callahan and Lily Bedore also survive him. A sister, Mary Seibert of Galeville, also survives him.

Calling hours will be at the Edward J. Ryan Funeral Home, 1628 W. Genesee St., Syracuse on Tuesday 4 to 7 p.m. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Michael’s Church on Onondaga Hill followed by his interment at the Veterans Cemetery.

JAMES HALL

NORWICH - James D. Hall, 56, life-long Norwich resident, passed away Friday morning, Feb. 22, 2002 in the Wilson Memorial Hospital of Johnson City, with his family at his side.

Jim was born and raised in Norwich, a 1963 graduate of Norwich High School. Choosing to further his education, he attended Broome Community College where he earned an associates degree as a lab technician. Returning home, Jim began his long employment with Norwich-Eaton Pharmaceutical in 1965 and at the same time continued his education by attending SUNY Brockport earning his B.A. degree in 1976. Jim continued his employment with Norwich-Eaton and their successor, Procter & Gamble until his retirement as a quality systems analyst in May of 1997. He was also a member of their Quarter Century Club.

Very active in the community, Jim was well known for his volunteer work and willingness to help anyone when needed. Over the years, he had been an active volunteer for the Meals on Wheels, the Broad Street United Methodist Church - of which he was a member - and the Norwich YMCA. He was also instrumental in organizing several of his class reunions. Following an accident at his home several years ago, Jim became very active in the Brain Injury Association of New York State. As secretary for this group, he wrote their newsletter. He also was in charge of the monthly newsletter of the Norwich Elks Lodge BPOE 1222, of which he was a long-time member and their current Chaplain. Jim belonged to the Norwich Lion’s Club, and was in charge of their newsletter as well. He was an avid golfer who was a long time-member of the Canasawacta Country Club, where he enjoyed golfing several times a week.

Born Oct. 3, 1945, in Norwich, Jim was the son of Archie D. and Lucy (Breed) Hall. On May 23, 1997, he married Gilda Cox-Jones. Jim is survived by his sisters: Marian Barr and her husband Bill of Norwich, and his twin sister Judith (Judy) Pike and her husband Robert of Edmond, Oklahoma; and by his brothers: Robert Hall and his wife Dorothy of Norwich, Donald Hall and his wife Barbara of Sherburne, and Harley Hall and his wife Sandy of Norwich. Many nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. Jim was predeceased by his parents Archie and Lucy Hall and also his brother Harold Hall.

Funeral services for Jim will be held on Wednesday at 9 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Rebekah Sweet, pastor of the Broad St. United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in the Mt. Hope Cemetery of Norwich.

Friends may call at the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Members of the Quarter Century Club will conduct a memorial service at 6 p.m. at the funeral home, and members of the Norwich Elk’s Lodge 1222 will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. The Norwich Lion’s Club will call in a group at 7:30 p.m.

DIANE ANDREWS

OTSELIC - Diane Williams Andrews, 46, of Route 80, Otselic, passed away Thursday evening, Feb. 21, 2002 in the Chenango Memorial Hospital of Norwich.

Diane was born Aug. 31, 1955, at the Otis Air Force Base in Otis, Mass. She was the daughter of Bruce O. Williams, who passed away in October of 1992, and Arlene Dibble Williams, who passed away in November of 1989. Diane had worked at the Community Work Shop in Norwich for quite a few years.

Diane is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Thomas Prusik of Mason, Ohio; her half-sister, Tina Wenzel of Vermilion, Ohio; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Bruce and Jina Williams, Jr., and Mark and Shari Williams, all of Norwich; and by five nieces and nephews: Zachary Williams, Alexander Williams, Savannah Williams, and Danielle Williams, all of Norwich, and Catlin Wenzel of Vermilion, Ohio. Also surviving are her uncles: Roger Williams of Bouckville, Allen Williams of Burlington Flats, and Kenneth Dibble of Myerstown, Pa.

Funeral services for Diane will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. Rev. Rebekah Sweet, pastor of the Broad Street United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery of Oxford. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday from noon until the service at 2 p.m.

DR. PAUL MacLEOD

NORWICH - Memorial services for Dr. Paul MacLeod were held on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002 at St. Paul’s Church. Rev. Douglas Cunningham, pastor, celebrated a Mass of Resurrection.

Dr. MacLeod’s daughter, Maggie Kennedy and son, Michael MacLeod, along with Jack Weinman, proclaimed the readings. Grandson Alex Cmil, read the prayer of the faithful. Maggie and Michel presented the offertory gifts.

The organist and vocalist for the service was Tom Kennedy and the altar server was John Tiquin. The services were under the direction of the Devine-Wilson Memorial Home.
