Mrs. Elizabeth Naudin McGrath Snedeker, 88, of South Lake Drive, Palm Beach, Fla., died peacefully Friday Oct. 19, in West Palm Beach. Elizabeth Naudin was born on March 28, 1913 in Gloversville, N.Y., to John and Katherine "Kitty" McGinnis Naudin. John Naudin, originally of Grenoble, France, was a co-founder of the Gloversville leather concern Jones & Naudin Inc. John and Kitty and Betty moved to 52 Kingsboro Ave. when Betty was a child. She graduated from Kenwood Academy, a Catholic convent in Albany. She later continued her education at Bouffement in Switzerland, and also at Columbia School of General Studies. In her twenties, Betty married John Francis McGrath of Waterbury, Conn., who was a lieutenant colonel in the Army, stationed at Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn. They had two girls, Lynn and Nancy McGrath. After the war, the family moved to the small city of Summit, N.J. where John McGrath started a chamois leather tannery in nearby Newark. They had a son, John Francis McGrath Jr. The McGraths belonged to the Canoe Brook Country Club, where both enjoyed playing golf. During the summer of 1959, the family experienced two tragic deaths. Betty's father John Naudin died from a sudden heart attack while on a June fishing trip near Montreal on an excursion with fellow members of the Gloversville Elks Club. Her husband John McGrath died in his sleep, suddenly and unexpectedly in August. He was in his mid-forties. Within a year, Betty moved her young family to Park Avenue in Manhattan. Three years later in 1962, she married Long Island widower Sedgwick Snedeker. Mr. Snedeker had three sons, Tom, Bill and Jim. Mr. Snedeker lived in Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., and the newlyweds kept the Manhattan apartment as well. Mr. Snedeker was a lawyer with the Wall Street firm of Shearson and Sterling. He was a member of the Union Club and the Holland Society. When Mr. Snedeker retired, they relocated to Palm Beach, Fla. They were members of the Everglades Club, The Four Arts Society, The Beach Club and Piping Rock Yacht Club in Long Island, where they kept their summer cottage in Laurel Hollow. During their time in Palm Beach, they had been active in The Heart Ball, which Mrs. Snedeker co-chaired. Mr Snedeker died in May of this year. Betty Snedeker volunteered at the United Nations and the Lighthouse for the Blind. She was a member of New York's Colony Club until her death. The Snedekers have given, through the John Naudin Foundation, to the Salvation Army of Palm Beach, Planned Parenthood, The Rehabilitation Center for Children and Adults, the Susan Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and the American Cancer Society, among others. The Naudin Foundation continues to contribute to such worthy Gloversville causes as the Nathan Littauer Hospital, The Glove Theater Restoration, and the Ida L. McGinnis Senior Citizens Club, which was begun by Betty Snedeker's beloved Aunt Ida. Mrs. Snedeker leaves behind her daughters, Lynn M. Tone of Laurel Hollow, Long Island, and Nancy Hodgkinson of Dallas, Texas; her son, John F. McGrath of Bensalem, Pa.; her stepsons, Tom Snedeker of New Orleans, La.,; and Jim Snedeker of Pennington, N.J. Her surviving grandchildren are William Hodgkinson, Elizabeth Goettlicher, and Katherine Chauncey. Her great-grandchildren are Jessica Goettlicher, Jennifer Goettlicher, Alexander Chauncey and Lillian Chauncey. There will be no calling hours. A Requiem Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Trinity Episcopal Church 31 Spring St., Gloversville. The Rev. William A. Hio will officiate.
