Beatrice B. Sponable

Mrs. Beatrice B. Sponable, 96, of Canajoharie, died Sunday morning (February 13, 2000) at home after a long illness. She was born on Aug. 16, 1903 in Cortland, the daughter of Devere and Ethyl Frost Brown. She was a lifelong area resident. In 1924, she moved to Albany to attend Albany Business College. After graduation, she moved to Fultonville and was employed as a secretary for the White Mop Company. She then went to work as a bookkeeper for Ottman's Ford Garage, later known as Failing's Ford Garage, in St. Johnsville for 19 years before retiring in 1967. She was a member of Reformed Church of Canajoharie and its Ladies Guild; she was also a member of the St. Johnsville Business Girls. On Dec. 22, 1928, she married Milburn Sponable. He died on Feb. 27, 1968. Survivors include four daughters, Jean Bastian of Colonie, Janet Montoni of Canajoharie, Catherine Kraft of Canajoharie and Shirley Greene of Fort Plain; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. There are no calling hours. The funeral service will be private and conducted at the convenience of the family.

Ena Vadakin

Mrs. Ena Vadakin, 91, of Northville, died Wednesday (February 9, 2000) at home after a long illness. She was born on Dec. 14, 1908 in Wilton, Saratoga County, the daughter of Harvey W. and Maybell Deyoe Ellithorpe. Mrs. Vadakin and her husband settled in Batchellerville in the town of Edinburg. She was employed for 37 1/2 years with New York Telephone Co., retiring at age 55. Mrs. Vadakin was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of American and a past president of its Troy Life Member Club. As an active pioneer, she was a hobby coordinator of the upstate New York area, coordinating and presenting hobby shows as well as teaching hobbies to member pioneers. She helped organize the Capital District Telephone Co. Employees Credit Union in 1953 and served on the committee to represent traffic unions. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church, Northville. She established the Flower Fund for the purpose of providing flowers for Sunday services. She was vice president of the Gleaners and financial secretary for several years, and held various other officers in the church and the United Methodist Women's organization. She was active in the Fulton County Sacandaga Grange since 1962 and served as membership chairman and stewardess. She was also a member of the New York State Pomona Grange. She received a membership award from the Centennial Club of the New York State Grange, making her the first person in Fulton County and the 78th in New York state to receive this award. She was a member of the Republican National Committee and the United States Task Force. She was a member of the Saratoga County Republican Club and served as an executive committee person for 21 years in the town of Edinburg. In 1975, she represented the Senior Action Committee for Saratoga County. She established the emergency food pantry for the town of Edinburg. She also served on the Saratoga County Office for the Aging Advisory Council for seven years. She was matron of Juanita Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star for four years; and served as chaplain for many years. She was a member of the Saratoga County District of DAR 1-143NY and served as regent for six years and treasurer for six years and was a member of the Past Regents Society. She also was a member of White Shrine, the Order of the Amaranth Court 197, Amsterdam; Edinburg and Wilton historical societies; the Dabbers' Craft Class of Gloversville; and Sacandaga Senior Citizens. She was a past member of the Sacandaga Garden Club. She was a crafts instructor for many years with the Lansingburgh, Troy, Boys' Club. She was active in the American Cancer Society of Saratoga County for many years and received several awards. She is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Northville Funeral Home, 401 Bridge St. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Josephine Valcav

Mrs. Josephine Valcav, 89, of Scotia, died Monday (February 14, 2000) at the Glendale Home, Glenville, after a brief illness. She was born and educated in Amsterdam. Mrs. Valcav moved to the Scotia area more than 60 years ago. She was employed for more than 40 years as a setter at the former Mohasco Industries, Amsterdam. Mrs. Valcav was a communicant of the former St. Cyril and Method Church, Rotterdam. She was predeceased by her husband, August F. Valcav, who died in 1998. She is survived by two nieces, Mary Ann Lopuch and Mary Pisarczyk, both of Amsterdam. A calling hour will be 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Light's Funeral Home, 1428 State St., Schenectady. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will take place in St. Cyril and Method Cemetery.

Josephine Valentino

Josephine Valentino, 86, of Johnstown died Saturday (February 19, 2000) at the Fulton County Regional Health Care Facility, Johnstown, after a long illness. She was born Jan. 26, 1914, the daughter of Salvatore and Rosalle Valentino. She was educated in Johnstown schools and worked for Rubin Glove Co., Gloversville, as a glove maker. She was affiliated with the Immaculate Conception Church. Miss Valentino is survived by one sister, Ann Granetz of Johnstown. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher St., Johnstown, officiated by Rev. Joseph DiMaggio, pastor of Immaculate Conception Church. A burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Johnstown, will take place in the spring.

Irene Veeder

Mrs. Irene Veeder, 81, of Palatine Nursing Home, Palatine Bridge, a former resident of Fultonville, died Tuesday (February 1, 2000) at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, after a brief illness. She was born on April 30, 1918 in Seward, Schoharie County, the daughter of Homer and Tressa Mereness Bellinger. Mrs. Veeder was raised in Canajoharie and was a graduate of Canajoharie High School She later moved to Fonda in 1936 and to Fultonville in 1947. She had resided at the nursing home for six months. She first was employed for several years in the Fultonville school cafeteria. She then worked for 10 years at the former Premier Glove Co., Fultonville; at the former Britts department store, Gloversville, and for many years at the Montgomery County Home for the Aging, Yost, before she retired in 1971. Mrs. Veeder was a member of Fultonville Reformed Church and its Women's Guild; a member and past grand warder of Mohawk Valley Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, where she was grand matron of the Order of Amaranth; and a member of Daughters of the American Revolution Caughnawaga Chapter and the Charleston Historical Society. On May 2, 1936, she married Donald C. Veeder Sr., who died on April 1, 1980. Survivors include two sons, Donald C. Veeder Jr. of Fultonville and Deline Veeder of Schenectady; one daughter, Nancy Roosevelt of Fort Plain; one brother, Thearon Bellinger of Palatine Bridge; three sisters, Clara White of Greenville, Greene County, and Ida Mae Istle and Bernice Van Patton, both of Canajoharie; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. At the request of Mrs. Veeder, calling hours and services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda. Arrangements are by Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Amsterdam.

Dorothy I. Waters

Mrs. Dorothy I. Waters, 87, of St. Johnsville, died Feb. 4 at the St. Johnsville Nursing Home. She was born March 19, 1912, in Amsterdam, the daughter of Thomas and Elsie Dingman Nevins. She was a graduate of St. Mary's Institute and also attended the Broadalbin Teachers Training Class. Mrs. Waters was employed as the head teller at Central National Bank in St. Johnsville, retiring in1974. After retiring, she was the town tax collector and was a town councilwoman for two terms. Dorothy was a member of St. Patrick's Church and a member of the Senior Citizen Saints of St. Johnsville. Survivors include two sons, Hector Allen of Oppenheim and John F. Waters of East Schodack; one daughter, Linda A. Waters of Palatine Bridge; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville and at 7 p.m. at St. Patrick's Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Kenneth Swain. Burial will be in the spring. Friends and relatives may call at the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home on Monday from 5:30 p.m. until the time of the services.

Earl C. Western

Mr. Earl C. Western, 68, of Johnstown, died Wednesday (February 2, 2000) at the home of his son after a long illness. He was born on Feb. 19, 1931 in Johnstown, the son of Earl and Edith M. Foster Western. Mr. Western was a graduate of Johnstown High School. He served in the Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean War. He first was employed for 10 years at the former Gloversville Knitting Mill and worked for 32 years at the former Pan American Leather Co., Gloversville. He retired in 1981. Mr. Western was a former board member of Pine Tree Rifle Club; board member and 30-year member of the Fulton County Federation Fish and Game Club; and a member of the Bleecker Fish and Game Club and the Adirondack Beagle Club. Survivors include two daughters, Diane Hart of Mayfield and Joann Western of Utica; one son, Scott C. Western of Johnstown; one sister, Marie Shutts of Fort Plain; two brothers, Harry Western of Johnstown and Ernest Western of Gloversville; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Ehle Funeral Home, 15 N. William St., Johnstown. A service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Fern Dale Cemetery, Johnstown.
