Keith C. Pankonin Sr.
Keith C. Pankonin Sr., 73, of Tribes Hill, died Saturday evening (February 12, 2000) at his home after a brief illness.
Born in Amsterdam on April 7, 1926, he was the son of Harold and Clara Jager Pankonin. He was a graduate of the the General Electric Apprentice Course and was employed at GE for 13 years. He later worked for Fultonville Machine & Tool Co. for 30 years until retiring as a supervisor.
During World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. Mr. Pankonin was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Amsterdam. He was a member, trustee and Sunday School teacher for Fort Hunter United Methodist Church until it closed. He was a past master of Welcome Lodge 829, F&AM and served as a past patron of Art-Wel Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. At one time, he was active in the Tribes Hill Volunteer Fire Department.
His son, Keith J. Pankonin Jr., died in December.
Survivors include his wife, the former Jean Vosburgh, whom he married on June 28, 1947; one daughter, Debra J. Hitchock of Fort Johnson; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several cousins.
Calling hours will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, where Welcome Lodge will conduct a service at 6:30 p.m.
A service will be conducted at 11 a.m.Wednesday at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 40 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam. Spring interment will take place in Pinegrove Cemetery, Tribes Hill.
Alfred W. Parry
Mr. Alfred W. Parry, 83, a former resident of Mayfield, died Thursday (February 3, 2000) at the Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility following a long illness.
He was born on June 20, 1916, in Bridgewater, Oneida County, the son of Richard and Margaret Humphries Parry. He was a graduate of Bridgewater High School, Class of 1935.
Mr. Parry was owner and operator of the Mayfield Grill from 1945 to 1965. He was employed by the Department of Environmental Conservation from 1960 to 1975, during which time he was caretaker at Little Sand Point Campsite in Piseco and was assistant caretaker at Northampton Campsite. At the time of his retirement he was operation supervisor at EnCon in Northville.
Mr. Parry was a member of Newport Lodge 455 Free and Accepted Masons.
He married Jennie Butler Parry on April 13, 1940; she died on Nov. 3, 1997.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty Jean Buyce of Mayfield; one brother, George Weaver of Utica; and two grandsons.
There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be conducted at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Northville at a time to be announced in the spring. Arrangements are by the Northville Funeral Home, 401 Bridge St., Northville.
Dorothy M. Paulson
Miss Dorothy M. Paulson, 94, formerly of Johnstown, died Tuesday (February 8, 2000) at The Folts Home, Herkimer, where she had resided since 1988.
She was born on May 27, 1905 in Galesburg, Ill., the daughter of Frank and Ada Marie Stephenson Paulson. Miss Paulson was a graduate of Galesburg High School and the Augustana School of Nursing, Chicago, Ill.
She was first employed as a registered nurse at Augustana Hospital and moved to Johnstown in 1951. In 1952, she moved to Delray, Fla., where she was a private nurse until she moved to Herkimer.
Miss Paulson was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include four cousins, Christine Sutton and Martha Gates, both of Johnstown; A. Denison Weaver of Chicago and Charlotte Cripe of Peoria, Ill.
A private service will be conducted at the convenience of the family at Linwood Cemetery, Galesburg. Arrangements are by Ehle Funeral Home, Johnstown.
Rose M. Pezzente
Mrs. Rose M. Pezzente, 88, of Amsterdam, died Tuesday (February 1, 2000) at home after a long illness.
She was born and educated in Amsterdam and was a lifelong city resident. She graduated from Reynolds Business School. She was a machine operator for Brenton Industries for many years before retiring in 1975.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and a member of its Christian Women's Society. Mrs. Pezzente was a member of the Mount Carmel and 5th Ward Senior Citizens groups; the former Catholic Daughters of American 1735; Knights of Columbus Council 209 Columbiettes, and the Mount Carmel Bingo Workers.
She was predeceased by her husband Thomas Pezzente, whom she married in 1928. He died in 1939.
Survivors include two sisters, Mary Galeazza of Amsterdam and Caroline Lynch of Perth.
Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the DeStefano Funeral Home, Route 5S, Amsterdam. Members of the Christian Women's Society will conduct a service at 7 p.m. Services will be conducted at 8:15 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home and at 9:15 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will take place in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
James W. Reddick
Mr. James W. Reddick, 83, of Amsterdam, died Monday evening (February 21, 2000) at home after being stricken.
He was born on Dec. 26, 1916 in Amsterdam, the son of Peter and Rose Chase Reddick. Mr. Reddick was educated in Amsterdam schools.
He worked for the former I.W. Chase Coal Company, Amsterdam, and later for the Fonda, Johnstown and Gloversville Railroad Company until he retired. Mr. Reddick was of the Presbyterian faith.
He is survived by one sister, Sarah Jane Reddick of Perth.
There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will take place at Greenhill Cemetery, Amsterdam, in the spring at a time to be announced. Arrangements are by Riley Mortuary, Amsterdam.
Scott J. Retersdorf
Scott J. Retersdorf, 17, of Gloversville, died Wednesday (February 2, 2000) at home after an acute illness.
He was born on March 15, 1982, in Gloversville, the son of J. Scott and Dodie R. Hoyt Retersdorf. He was senior class president of Gloversville High School and was a lifelong Gloversville resident.
Mr. Retersdorf was a pool lifeguard at Gloversville Middle School. Last summer he was a lifeguard at the New York state campsite in Northampton.
He was an active member of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, Gloversville, where he was a substitute faith formation instructor, occasional choir member and former altar server. He also played the trumpet at special Masses and ceremonies.
Survivors include his parents of Gloversville; three sisters, Robyn M. Morrell of Newark, Del., Debra L. Wells of Schenectady, Jaime D. Retersdorf, attending SUNY Plattsburgh; two brothers, Alan F. Retersdorf and Brian C. Retersdorf, both of Gloversville; paternal grandparents, James M. and Rita Gargiulo Retersdorf of Gloversville; maternal grandmother, Marion Vignuli Hoyt of Gloversville; two nieces; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was predeceased by his paternal grandmother, Helen Gargiulo; and maternal grandmother, Rose Vignuli.
Calling hours will be 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, Gloversville. The Rev. Donald Czelusniak, pastor, will officiate. Spring burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown.
Thurman C. Rice
Mr. Thurman C. Rice, 81, of Gloversville, died Saturday morning (February 5, 2000) at St. Clare's Hospital in Schenectady, where he had been a patient for a week.
He was born in Marshville, Maine, on Oct. 29, 1918, the son of Thurman and Mabel Hat Rice and attended schools in Maine. In 1954 he moved to Connecticut and resided there until 1986 when he moved to Broadalbin. He had resided in Gloversville since 1995.
Mr. Rice was employed as a welder in the manufacturing of submarines at General Dynamics in Groton, Conn., retiring in 1983.
Mr. Rice was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Marines.
He was of the Methodist faith.
Mr. Rice was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7097 in Johnstown, and a former member of the American Legion Post 337 in Broadalbin.
He was married to the former Grace Tratton Rice on March 17, 1957. She died on June 17, 1988.
Survivors include three sons, Craig Rice of Gloversville, Roger Rice of Willimantic, Conn., and Clyde Rice of Suffield, Conn.; four daughters, Elizabeth Rice of Schenectady, Jacqueline Dutko of Windsor, Conn., Brenda Colburn of Amston, Conn., and Patricia Stewart of Mobile, Ala.; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A ritual will be performed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7097 on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, 38 West Main St., Broadalbin. Calling hours will begin at 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Spring burial will take place at the Union Mills Cemetery in Broadalbin.
