John M. Costello Jr.
Mr. John M. Costello Jr., 79, of Sacandaga Park, died Wednesday (February 16, 2000) at Nathan Littauer Hospital after a short illness.
He was born on Dec. 29, 1920 in Utica, the son of Francis and Josephine Higgs Costello. Mr. Costello moved from Piscataway, N.J., to Sacandaga Park last year.
He served in the Army Air Force during World War II.
He was first employed at Remington Arms, Utica. After the war, he was an electronics engineer at WENT radio station, Gloversville. In 1950, he worked for Lockheed Aircraft, Burbank, Calif., and was transferred to Edison, N.J., in 1960. He first retired in 1986. He then was employed at Victory Engineering, Springfield, N.J., and retired in 1993.
Mr. Costello was a member of St. Francis of Cabrini Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the senior citizens center, all of Piscataway.
Survivors include his wife, the former Beverly Allen of Gloversville; one daughter, Janice E. Costello of Northville; one brother, Francis "Bud" Costello of New Hartford, Oneida County; three sisters, Patricia Costello of Utica, Rosemary Charbonnaue of Florida and Maryanne Fitzgerald of Canandaigua, Ontario County; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by two sons, John M. Costello Jr., who died in 1986, and James E. Costello, who died in 1989; and one brother, Edward Costello.
Calling hours will be 4 to 6 p.m. today at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville. A prayer service will be conducted at 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. At 9:30 a.m., a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, Gloversville. The Rev. Donald Czelusniak, pastor, will be celebrant. Spring burial will take place in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown.
Anna E. Cridland
Mrs. Anna E. Cridland, 91, of Johnstown, died Sunday (February 20, 2000) at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility, Amsterdam, after a long illness.
She was born on May 26, 1908 in Minaville, the daughter of Marcil and Mary Louise Roy Lavalley.
Mrs. Cridland was a self-employed seamstress.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harry Cridland, who died on July 23, 1960.
She is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.
There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Church, Glebe Street, Johnstown. The Rev. James Fitzmaurice, pastor, will be celebrant. Spring burial will take place in Johnstown Cemetery. Arrangements are by A.G. Cole Funeral Home, Johnstown.
Lawrence W. Crosier
Mr. Lawrence W. "Larry" Crosier, 85, of Palatine Bridge, died Tuesday (February 8, 2000) at home.
He was born on June 5, 1914 in Salem, Washington County, the son of Raymond S. and Emma Mae Walsh Crosier. Mr. Crosier was educated in Hebron and Granville schools.
He was employed at Fort Plain Agway until he retired in 1976. He was a farmer in Washington County at one time.
Mr. Crosier was a member of St. John's Reformed Church, St. Johnsville, and the St. Johnsville Seniors.
Survivors include his wife, the former Jane E. Crosier, whom he married on Sept. 11, 1942; four sons, James Crosier of Fort Plain, Gerald Crosier of Amsterdam, Timothy Crosier of St. Johnsville, and Thomas Crosier of Johnstown; two daughters, Betsy Casey and Linda McConnell, both of Rochester; one brother, Joseph Crosier of Greenwich, Washington County; two sisters, Mildred West of Saratoga and Marjorie Damiata of Middletown, Conn.; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one son, Leonard Crosier; one brother, Harold Crosier; and two sisters, Thelma LaFountain and Carolyn Bodenstab.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Reformed Church, West Main Street, St. Johnsville. The Rev. Russell Camp, pastor, will officiate. Spring burial will take place in West St. Johnsville Cemetery.
Charles D. Derby
Mr. Charles D. Derby, 72, of Gloversville, died Monday (February 21, 2000) at home after a long illness.
He was born on May 18, 1927 in Gloversville, the son of Charles H. and Mildred Dawson Derby. Mr. Derby was a 1945 graduate of Gloversville High School, and Bryant College, Rhode Island, with a degree in business administration. He was a lifelong area resident.
He served in the Navy during World War II.
He was president of Derby Office Equipment Inc., Gloversville, for 38 years.
Mr. Derby was a member of Sacred Heart Church and a former member of Knights of Columbus Council 265, the Lions Club and the Adirondack Bowling League, all of Gloversville.
He was a former member of Pine Brook Golf Club, Gloversville, for 38 years, where he aced four times and was a past board member.
Survivors include his wife, the former M. Jane Smith, whom he married on April 15, 1950; three sons, William C. Derby, Mayfield, Michael D. Derby of Alexandria, Va. and Patrick Derby of Gloversville; one daughter, Nora Ann Leeder of Lake Tahoe, Calif.; one sister, Anne Derby Fox of Pittsford, Monroe County; four grandchildren, one niece, one nephew and several cousins.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial Mass of Christian burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Church, Gloversville. The Rev. David L. Tressic, pastor, will be celebrant. Cremation will take place at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. Arrangements are by Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Gloversville.
William C. Dillenbeck Sr.
Mr. William C. Dillenbeck Sr., 90, of Fort Plain, died Sunday (February 6, 2000) at Little Falls Hospital after a long illness.
He was born on July 3, 1909 in town of Danube, the son of Oliver and Betsy Ward Dillenbeck. Mr. Dillenbeck was educated in country schools and was a lifelong area resident.
He was employed as a school bus driver for Fort Plain Central School and was self-employed as a sanitation contractor for the village of St. Johnsville.
Mr. Dillenbeck was of the Reformed faith and attended the former Stone Arabia Reformed Church.
On Nov. 26, 1931, he married the former Lena Smith, who died in April 1999. He was also predeceased by one brother, Leland Dillenbeck.
Survivors include three sons, William C. Dillenbeck Jr. and Jeffrey Dillenbeck, both of Fort Plain, and Kenneth G. Dillenbeck of Nelliston; one daughter, Betty Neri of Broadalbin; three brothers, Harland Dillenbeck and Chester Dillenbeck, both of Fort Plain, and Herman Dillenbeck of Johnstown; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie. The Rev. John Omans, pastor of St. John's-St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Canajoharie, will officiate. Spring burial will take place in Ephratah Rural Cemetery.
Yolanda Monaco Fiorillo
Mrs. Yolanda Monaco Fiorillo, 94, of Rotterdam, sister of a Johnstown resident, died Monday (February 7, 2000) at home after a short illness.
She was born on Dec. 16, 1905 in Schenectady, the daughter of Paul and Metilda Zoccoli Monaco. Mrs. Fiorillo was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Fiorillo was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Schenectady, and its St. Theresa Guild.
She was predeceased by her husband, James Fiorillo, who died in 1999.
Survivors include two daughters, June Gardner and Virginia Strow, both of Rotterdam; one brother, Roy Monaco of Glenville; four sisters, Ida Centifanti of California, Enes Reinhold of Connecticut, and Gemma Stapleton of Glenville and Pauline Ruhl of Johnstown; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St., Schenectady. A service will be conducted at 9:15 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. At 10 a.m., a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Schenectady. Burial will take place in Evergreen Memorial Park, Colonie.
Helen R. Aesch Fonda
Mrs. Helen R. Aesch Fonda, 74, a former resident of Gloversville, died Thursday (February 24, 2000) at Nathan Littauer Nursing Home after a long illness.
She was born on Oct. 20, 1925 in Broadalbin, the daughter of Ernest and Victorine Verney Aesch.
She worked as a cashier for various area grocery stores. She also was employed as a sewer at the former Glenwood Shoe Co., Gloversville, retiring many years ago.
Mrs. Fonda was a former member of the Johnstown Moose Lodge Auxiliary.
On Nov. 7, 1943, she married Richard Fonda, who died in 1999.
Survivors include one daughter, Marlene Yestremski of Gloversville; one brother, Henry Aesch of Gloversville; one sister, Flora Violyn of Gloversville; and one grandchild.
Calling hours will be 2 to 6 p.m. today at Amico Funeral Home, 150 S. Main St., Gloversville. A service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The Rev. David Newkirk, pastor of Mayfield Methodist Church, will officiate. Spring burial will take place in Broadalbin Cemetery.
