Edna VanAvery

Mrs. Edna VanAvery, 74, of Murray Hill Road, St. Johnsville, died Monday, Jan. 28, at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, after a brief illness. She was born on Nov. 15, 1927 in Connecticut, the daughter of Joseph and Catherine Wheeler Roca. Mrs. VanAvery was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses, Johnstown. She was employed with Beech-Nut in Canajoharie and later worked for the former Continental Mills in Gloversville. Survivors include two daughters, Kathryn Ackernecht of St. Johnsville and Judith Greenslete of Lassellsville; one son, Nelson VanAvery Jr. of St. Johnsville; two sisters, Agnes Marotta of Amsterdam and Ruth Ann Rumley of Galway; two brothers, Joseph Roca of Amsterdam and Manuel Roca of Washington; three grandchildren, Scott Ackernecht, Alissa Greenslete and Michael Greenslete; nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. VanAvery was predeceased by her husband, Nelson VanAvery, whom she married on Sept. 27, 1953 and who died on Dec. 8, 1992. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. today at A.G. Cole Funeral Home, 215 E. Main St., Johnstown, where funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. Spring burial will take place at Fical Cemetery, Lassellsville.

Derah E. Warrick

Derah E. Warrick, infant daughter of Shawn and Katrina Warrick, died Monday, Jan. 28, at Albany Medical Center. She was born on Dec. 18, 2001 at St. Clare's Hospital. Derah is the sister of Cassandra and Ashley Warrick. She is the granddaughter of Paul and Deborah Dietrich of Amsterdam, Theresa Steele of Scotia and Marty Warrick of Clifton Park; great-granddaughter of Wanda and Leonard Wells of Johnstown; James Fake of Rotterdam, Francis and Doris Warrick of Clifton Park. Calling hours will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at New Cromer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie (Route 155 south of Central Avenue). A Mass of the Angels will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul the Apostle Church, Schenectady. Interment will take place at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Schenectady.

Erwin Getzlaff

Mr. Erwin Getzlaff, 76, of Johnstown, died Tuesday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was born on June 30,1924 in Elbing, Germany, the son of Emil and Anna Loeffke Getzlaff. He worked as a supervisor for Peerless Instrument Co., Long Island, before he moved to Johnstown. He retired in 1987. He is survived by his wife, the former Irmgard Hofer, whom he married on Aug. 19, 1950; and two cousins. There will be no calling hours. A service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at Barter & Donnan Funeral Home 1 N. Melcher St., Johnstown. The Rev. Lauretta Dietrich, pastor of St. James Lutheran Church, Gloversville, will officiate. Cremation will take place in Parkview Crematory, Schenectady

Eugene Fellows

Mr. Eugene "Dutch" Fellows, 81, of Scotia, died Tuesday at home after a long illness. He was born in Schenectady and was a graduate of Scotia High School. He was a lifetime Scotia resident. Mr. Fellows worked for General Electric Co. as a production expediter in the small motors department for 43 years, retiring in 1962. He was a member of the GE Quarter Century Club and the Adirondack 46ers. He was also a member of First Baptist Church of Scotia. Survivors include one son, Jamie S. Fellows of Amsterdam. He is predeceased by his wife, Mary Truax Fellows, who died in 1977. There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in Maple Shade Cemetery. Arrangements are by Bekkering-Ellis Funeral Home, Scotia.

Florence J. Morganstern

Mrs. Florence J. Morganstern, 85, of Niskayuna, a native of Amsterdam, died Wednesday at home. She was born in Amsterdam and lived in Schenectady for most of her life. Mrs. Morganstern owned and operated several clothing stores and worked at the Fireside Ship in Schenectady, retiring in 1970. She was a member of Congregation Beth Israel and its sisterhood in Schenectady and a former member of the Eastern Star in Kingston. Survivors include one daughter, Paula Cohen Rosenblat of Loudonville; one son, Mark Morganstern of Rosendale; one sister, Rose Sherer of Albany; and eight grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Matthew Morganstern, who died in 1077. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Levayah Chapels, 40 N. Brandywine Ave., Schenectady. Burial will take place in Beth Israel Cemetery. The shiva period will be private.

Gary Noone

Mr. Gary Noone, 60, of Broadalbin, died Wednesday at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady, after a short illness. He was born on Sept. 24, 1940 in Amsterdam. Mr. Noone was a 1958 graduate of Johnstown High School. He served in the Army from 1959 to 1963. He was employed as a plant manager in the textile industry in New York, California and Mississippi. He retired in 1985. Mr. Noone was of the Catholic faith. Survivors include his wife, the former Loretta Saltsman, whom he married on July 4, 1986; two sons, Martin Noone of Atlanta, Ga. and Casey Noone of Broadalbin; one daughter, Bridgit Noone of Broadalbin; his mother, Marjorie Vosburgh Noone of Johnstown; three brothers, Thomas Noone of Calabash, N.C., James Noone of Rochester and Charles Noone of Glens Falls; and one grandson. He was predeceased by his father, Earl Noone. Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher St., Johnstown. A service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The Rev. James Fitzmaurice, pastor of St. Patrick's Church, Johnstown, will officiate. Burial will take place in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown.

Anna Skoda

Mrs. Anna Skoda, 91, formerly of Johnstown, died Wednesday at Hyde Park Nursing Home, Dutchess County after a long illness. She was born on April 17, 1909 in Piermont, Rockland County, the daughter of John and Ottila Sefcovic Sefcovic. Mrs. Skoda moved to Poughkeepsie in 1985. She was employed as a glove maker for various area glove companies. Mrs. Skoda was a member of St. Anthony's Church, Johnstown. She is survived by one sister, Tilly C. Young of Poughkeepsie; one brother, Anthony Sefcovic of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Stephen Skoda, who died on July 9, 1984. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Church, Johnstown. The Rev. James Fitzmaurice, pastor, will be celebrant. Burial will take place in St. Anthony's Cemetery in the spring. Arrangements are by Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, Johnstown.

Mr. Albert "Blacky" Spencer, 81, of Speculator, a former village trustee, died Tuesday at home after a short illness. He was born on Oct. 17, 1919 in Brooklyn, the son of Lawrence and Blanche Slack Spencer. Mr. Spencer was raised in Milburn, N.J. and graduated from Milburn High School. He lived in Maplewood, N.J. until he moved to Speculator in 1984. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He was employed for many years as an insurance salesman for the Prudential Insurance Co. He was a member of the Lake Pleasant Golf Club. Survivors include one son, Lawrence Spencer of Milford, Mass.; three daughters, Carol Stegen of Wanaque, N.J., Kate Spencer of West Orange, N.J. and Jennifer Page of Speculator; one brother, Edward Spencer of Princeton, N.J.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Dorothy Johnson, who died in 1989; and three sisters, Mildred Shaw, Christine Schwan and Marion Spencer. Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Northville Funeral Home, 401 Bridge St. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Speculator Cemetery in the spring.
