Robert Oare Jr.

Robert Oare Jr., 75, of Church Street, Hagaman, passed away unexpectedly Saturday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital. He was born on Aug. 18, 1926 in Broadalbin, a son of Robert and Elsie Kisinger Oare Sr. He was a lifelong resident of the Fulton and Montgomery County area. He attended Gloversville High School. He worked first for Mohasco in Amsterdam. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He then was employed as a millwright for General Electric Co., Schenectady, for over 25 years. Mr. Oare was of the Protestant faith. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and enjoyed camping. He married the former Dorothy Orrey on Oct. 7, 1950. In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Robert M. Oare and his wife Nancy of Amsterdam and Edward N. Oare and his wife Donna of Westerlo, N.Y.; two daughters, Bonnie L. Vascherault of Gainesville, Fla. and Laurie Smith and her husband Jeffrey of Schenectady; one brother, Gerald Oare of Gloversville; one sister, Kathleen Kucel of Gloversville; two grandchildren, Robert R. Oare and Arthur R. Vascherault; one great-grandson, Joshua Hunter Oare; two step-grandchildren, Julia Presley and Nattiece Taylor; nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive relatives and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam. Cremation will take place at Vale Cemetery Crematorium in Schenectady. Burial will take place at Union Mills Cemetery in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to Montgomery County S.P.C.A. Marian S. Lobas

Mrs. Marian S. Lobas, 87, of Seven Hills Road, Northville, died Saturday evening at Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility following a long illness. She was born on May 12, 1914 in Czechoslovakia. She had been a resident of Northville for 21 years and was a homemaker. She married William S. Lobas on Dec. 9, 1941. He survives. She is also survived by one sister, Ann Prokop of Warren, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Northville Funeral Home, 401 Bridge St. Burial will take place at Saratoga National Cemetery.

Charlotte V. Therrien

Mrs. Charlotte V. Therrien, 81, of Nelliston, died Sunday at Wells Nursing Home, Johnstown, where she had been a resident. She was born on June 17, 1920 in Ilion, N.Y., the daughter of John and Myrtle Mowrey France. She was raised and educated in Johnstown and resided there for many years. She was employed at Baronet Litho in Johnstown for many years. Mrs. Therrien also worked as a hostess at Johnstown Holiday Inn and Johnstown Hotel and worked at the Juniorama clothing store. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters in Johnstown and was an avid bowler. After her retirement, Mrs. Therrien was the caretaker for the Fort Klock Restoration in St. Johnsville, N.Y. and was a member of the Fort Klock Historical Society, the Adirondack Weavers Guild and was a published author of poetry and cookbooks. Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl M. Burton of Johnstown; a grandson, James A. Longfritz; and a great-grandson, Joshua B. Longfritz of Johnstown; a niece; a nephew; and several cousins. She was predeceased by her two husbands, William H. Christoff and Alfred Therrien; a brother, Chester France; and her son, Bruce W. Christoff, who died on Dec. 21, 1991. The family will receive relatives and friends from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville, where funeral services will follow at noon. The Rev. Kenneth Dingman will officiate. Burial will take place at Fort Plain Cemetery in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Fort Klock Restoration Fund in care of the funeral home.

Gertrude Alpert

Gertrude Alpert, 84, of Gloversville, died Monday afternoon at her home. She was born on July 13, 1917 in Gloversville, the daughter of Morris and Anna Sack Myzal. She was a graduate of Gloversville High School Class of 1934 and received her teaching degree from Cortland Normal School. She resided in Gloversville all of her life. Mrs. Alpert was employed as a bookkeeper for the former Fulmont News Co. and the former Rossi Glove Co., both of Gloversville. She was a full-time partner with her husband in the Sir William Squire Shop in Johnstown until she retired in 1982. She was a lifetime member of the Knesseth Israel Synagogue and an active participant and treasurer of the Sisterhood of the synagogue. She was also a member of the Hadassah. Mrs. Alpert taught Sunday School and was a Hebrew school teacher for several years. She was a former president of the McNab PTA, past president of the Central Council of the PTA, the Nathan Littauer Hospital Auxiliary, and a Cub Scout den mother. Mrs. Alpert was very active with the young children in the community, setting up block dances and teaching from a one-room schoolhouse. She was very devoted to her family and friends and was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Assn. She was a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Alpert is survived by her husband, Samuel S. Alpert, whom she married on Feb. 17, 1945. She is also survived by one daughter, Feyga E. Alpert of Gloversville; one son, Paul G. and his wife Rena Alpert of Cherry Hill, N.J.; one brother, Mitchell and his wife Amelia Myzal of Gloversville; one brother-in-law, David Sandler of Florida; three sisters-in-law, Shirley Sandler of Florida, Alice Alpert of Johnstown and Claire Myzal of Gloversville; two beloved grandchildren, Jessica Goldman of New Jersey, Matthew J. Alpert of Cherry Hill, N.J. and many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Mrs. Alpert was predeceased by two brothers, Philip and Eugene Myzal; and two sisters, Jessie Levinson and Esther Miller. There will be a funeral service at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Knesseth Israel Synagogue, 34 E. Fulton St., Gloversville. Rabbi Martin Gordon will officiate, assisted by Rabbis Monte and Anna Sugarman. Interment will take place in the Knesseth Israel Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, Gloversville Free Library, or the James A. Brennan Humane Society. Arrangements are by Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville.

Orville A. Countryman

Mr. Orville "Bud" A. Countryman, 74, of Walnut Street, Canajoharie, died Sunday morning, Jan. 20, at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, after a brief illness. He was born on Feb. 27, 1927 in the town of Root, the son of Lester and Harriet Wessell Countryman. Mr. Countryman was educated at the former Buel Country School and Cherry Valley School. He was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Countryman was a machine operator in the strained foods department for Beech-Nut, Canajoharie. for 46 years until he retired in 1989. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Army in the Occupational Forces in Germany. He was of the Protestant faith. He was a member of Beech-Nut 25 Year Club; Smith-Schultz American Legion Post 222 of Canajoharie; former member of Ames Volunteer Fire Department; avid race car fan; member of North East Stock Car Old Time; and worked at Fonda Speedway and many other area race tracks. He married Natalie Wikoff Countryman on April 23, 1949 in Cherry Valley, N.Y. Survivors include his wife, Natalie Countryman of Canajoharie; three daughters and sons-in-law, Alice Countryman and Janet and Richard Snyder of Canajoharie and Carol and Dwayne Heroth of Ephratah; one sister, Erma "Shirley" Maring of Canajoharie; one granddaughter, Jaynie Snyder of Canajoharie; one grandson, Kreig Heroth of Ephratah; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home Inc., 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23. The Rev. Alvin Burnworth, pastor of the Church of Good Shepherd, Canajoharie, will officiate. Burial will take place at Canajoharie Falls Cemetery in the spring. William G. Demarest

William G. Demarest, 86, of Johnstown, died today at Nathan Littauer Hospital. He was born on March 21, 1915 in Broadalbin, N.Y., the son of George and Nellie Newkirk Demarest. He attended Broadalbin schools and was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Demarest was employed as a leather worker for over 50 years, retiring from the Wood & Hyde Co. of Gloversville. Mr. Demarest was a member of Bleecker Fish and Game Club. He is survived by one son, Mr. Gordon Demarest of Gloversville; two daughters, Mrs. Carol L. Beekman of Johnstown and Miss Norma J. Demarest of Harwich, Mass.; one brother, Richard Demarest of Broadalbin; seven grandchildren, Mrs. Lavina Town, Mrs. Jennie Knowlton, Miss Angel Beekman, Mrs. Mona Ellis, Mrs. Barbara Webb, Mr. Richard Kowalczyk and Mr. Gregory Kowalczyk; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Marie A. Christoff Demarest, who died on Aug. 14, 1993. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Steve and Burton Demarest; three sisters, Rose Spencer, Frances Torren and Nina Winne. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday. The Rev. David Almleaf will officiate. Spring interment will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Julia Rendina

Mrs. Julia Rendina, 97, formerly of Steele Avenue, Gloversville, died Sunday evening at Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility, where she had resided since 1993. She was born on Aug. 30, 1904 in Italy, the daughter of Vincenzo and Vincie Ragusa. Mrs. Rendina was a glove maker who worked at Grandoe Gloves and retired several years ago. She was a communicant of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church. She married Luigi Rendina in 1939, who survives. Also survived by a sister, Rose Salluzzo of Schenectady; several nieces and nephews. There will be no viewing hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church. Entombment will take place in the spring at Mount Carmel Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are being handled by Amico Funeral Home, 150 S. Main St., Gloversville.

Rev. Howard E. Stanton

The Rev. Howard E. Stanton, died Dec. 12, 2001 at Black Mountain, N.C. He was born to Gardiner and Nellie Hillabrandt Stanton on Sept. 6, 1921 in Gloversville, where he graduated from high school in 1939. He was a graduate of Oberlin College, Oberlin Theological Seminary. His active Presbyterian pastorates were in Colorado, Illinois, Wisconsin, where he retired in 1985. After retirement he worked several years as assistant to the president of Warren Wilson College in North Carolina. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Alison White Stanton; four sons and their wives; four grandchildren; several foster children; and one sister, Kathryn Heald. Services and interment were in North Carolina. Howard will be remembered as a happy, outgoing person who loved life and people.
