Nancy Oldick
January 5, 2001

Mrs. Nancy Oldick, 89, of St. Johnsville, died Wednesday at home after a long illness. She was born on Feb. 22, 1911 in the town of Danube, the daughter of John and Cora Davis Grainer. Mrs. Oldick was educated in the former Country School, town of Danube. She was a lifelong area resident. She was the proprietor of a dairy farm with her husband in the town of Minden for 60 years, retiring in 1992. Mrs. Oldick was a former member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Fort Plain. Survivors include five daughters, Marian M. Mikus and Betty N. Steele, both of Little Falls, Lucille E. Oldick of East Herkimer, Jane Lasher of Ephratah and Denise A. Oldick of St. Johnsville; four sons, Ramon E. Oldick, William F. Oldick and Ralph C. Oldick, all of Fort Plain, and Donald W. Oldick of Little Falls; one sister, Ann Cook of Fort Plain; 22 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. On June 18, 1929, she married Harland J. Oldick, who died on Nov. 19, 1991. Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain. A service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The Rev. Kenneth Dingman, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will take place in Fort Plain Cemetery in the spring.

Veronica Divijak Putnam

Mrs. Veronica Divijak Putnam, 77, of Johnstown, died Thursday at Nathan Littauer Nursing Home after a long illness. She was born on July 24, 1923 in Johnstown, the daughter of Florian and Caroline Smrtic Divijak. Mrs. Putnam graduated from Johnstown schools in 1942. She served in the Army during World War II in the motor pool. She was employed as a glove worker at Gates Mills and then the former Crecendoe Glove Co., Johnstown. Mrs. Putnam was a member of First Presbyterian Church and its choir, and the Women of the Moose, in Johnstown. She was an avid bowler on several leagues in the Johnstown area. She is survived by one daughter, Marijane DeGaro of Clifton Park; and two grandchildren. On Feb. 20, 1947, she married Clarence Putnam, who died on May 27, 1998. She also was predeceased by one sister, Julia Frank; and two brothers, Floyd Divijak and Thomas Divijak. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher St., Johnstown. A service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. The Rev. Dr. Earl Johnson Jr., pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Johnstown, will officiate. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.

Carol T. Tarbox

Mrs. Carol T. Tarbox, 66, of Schenectady, the mother of Broadalbin and Amsterdam residents, died Wednesday at home after being stricken. Born in Schenectady, Mrs. Tarbox attended Draper High School,and was a lifelong area resident. She was a clerk at City Mission of Rotterdam until the time of her death. Survivors include three daughters, Kathy L. Taylor and Karen S. Hughes, both of Broadalbin, and Carol A. Brooks of Amsterdam; two sons, Charles L. Tarbox Jr. of Colonie and James A. Tarbox of Schenectady; three sisters, Doris Simkins of Charlton, Helen Ridge of Schenectady and Betty Tries of Colonie; one brother, John Linscott of Florida; and eight grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles L. Tarbox Sr., who died in 1994. A calling hour will be 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at DeMarco Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam. A service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Vale Cemetery, Schenectady. Arrangements are by DeLuccia Funeral Services, Rotterdam.

Rosa Bienick

Mrs. Rosa Bienick, 68, of Amsterdam, died Friday morning at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam. She was born on Aug. 8, 1932, in Amsterdam, the daughter of Benedito and Rose Peconie Frascatore. She was a lifelong area resident and was a 1950 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School in Amsterdam. She was employed by General Electric Co. in Schenectady for a number of years and was employed by the Golden Years Adult Home in Amsterdam from 1978 to 1987. She was last employed for two years at the St. Mary's Institute in Amsterdam until her retirement in March, due to poor health. Mrs. Bienick was a former member of the St. Agnello Club in Amsterdam, a member of the Amsterdam Women's Commercial Bowling League and the Tuesday Night Mixed Bocci League, both in Amsterdam. Survivors include one son, Robert Bienick of Guilderland; two daughters, Janice Swider of Glenville and Lisa Appleton of Rexford; one sister, Livia Coluni of Amsterdam and Benjamin Frascatore of Tribes Hill; six grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She as predeceased by her husband, Walter Bienick, whom she married on Nov. 18, 1956. Mr. Bienick died on Nov. 22, 1990. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam. Services will be held at 8:15 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at the St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church on Grove Street in Amsterdam. Burial will take place in St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Amsterdam.

David DiMezza

Mr. David Di Mezza, 84, of Gloversville, died suddenly Friday morning at Nathan Littauer Hospital. He was born on Aug. 1, 1916, in Gloversville, the son of Cosimo and Anna Fariello Di Mezza. He was a lifelong area resident and a graduate of Gloversville High School. Mr. Di Mezza was the owner and operator of the former Di Mezza Sporting Goods store in Johnstown for more than 20 years and Di Mezza's Variety Store in Gloversville, which closed in 1998. At the time of his death, he was working in Johnstown for Fulton County in the building and grounds department. He was a member of the Gloversville Knights of Columbus, Council 265, where he was a third-degree and a former grand knight. He was a communicant of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church and a member of the 55 Plus Senior Citizens Club. Survivors include his wife, the former Carmella Piazza, whom he married on Sept. 28, 1947; one son, David J. Di Mezza of Latham; one brother, James Di Mezza of Gloversville; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two sisters, Susan Scully and Rose Smigley; and two brothers, Carlo and John Di Mezza. Calling house will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Amico Funeral Home, 150 South Main St. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Cremation was at the Leatherstocking Crematory in Cherry Valley. Spring burial will be at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Johnstown. The Gloversville Council 265 of the Knights of Columbus will hold a ritual at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Calvin N. Courtney

Mr. Calvin N. Courtney, 17, of Division Street, Amsterdam, died suddenly Friday at home. Born July 14, 1983 in Little Falls, he was the son of R. Calvin and Ginger Pohlig Courtney. He resided in Caroga Lake most of his life. He was a part-time employee at The Unger House Restaurant in Caroga Lake. Mr. Courtney was a senior at Johnstown High School. He was a member of the Alpine Ski, Cross Country and Track teams. He was also a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Little Falls. Survivors include his father, R. Calvin Courtney of Gloversville; his mother, Ginger Pohlig Clive of Dolgeville; his sister, Sarah E. Courtney of Albany; maternal grandmother, Joan Pohlig of Powder Springs, Ga.; and paternal grandmother, Barbara N. Thompson of Johnstown; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by grandfathers Robert Pohlig Sr. and Robert J. Courtney. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a prayer service will follow at 7 p.m. The family will also receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Little Falls, where a Mass will be celebrated at noon with Rev. Stephen Scarcia officiating. Cremation will follow at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady.

Carmen Maria Lopez

Mrs. Carmen Maria Lopez, 85, of Wall Street, Amsterdam, died Friday evening at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness. Born Jan. 15, 1915, in Toabaja, Puerto Rico, she was the daughter of Jose and Ana Negron Lopez. She attended school in Puerto Rico before coming to the United States. She lived in the New York City area before moving to Amsterdam in 1991. She worked as a seamstress in Manhattan before her retirement. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church in Amsterdam, A.K.A. Iglesia Pentecostal M.I. She married Felix Martinez, who died in 1976. She was predeceased by a son, Ramon Martinez, in 1994. Survivors include one son, Angel Martinez of Amsterdam; 12 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, with the Rev. Jose L. Gonsalez officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends beginning at 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., Amsterdam.
