Frances Fenner
January 5, 2001

Mrs. Frances R. Fenner, 55, of Route 161, Glen, N.Y., died Thursday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, N.Y., after being stricken at home. She was born on July 22, 1946, in Little Falls, N.Y., the daughter of Frank and Rose Malagisi Turturo. She attended Little Falls schools and moved to this area in 1984. She was a homemaker and ran a child care center at her home. Mrs. Fenner was a devoted member of the Glen Reformed Church, serving on the committee for the church auction and the Action Committee for those in need. She was a former member of the town of Glen Fire Department Auxiliary. While her husband was serving in the military around the world, wherever they where stationed, she enjoyed working with young people at the Booster Club for Youth. She loved Christmas, shopping, cooking for her family, doing charity work and putting food baskets together for people. Mrs. Fenner was married on Feb. 4, 1967, to her beloved Gerald R. (Dick) Fenner. Besides her husband, she is survived by her loving family; a son, Gerald R. Fenner Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters, Roslita M. Lilley and Felicia L. Fenner, both of Glen; two brothers, Nicholas Turturo and Joseph Turturo, both of Little Falls; three grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive relatives and friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville, N.Y. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Glen Reformed Church, Route 161, Glen. The Rev. Joyce Jennings will officiate. Cremation will follow at Vale Crematory, Schenectady. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Glen Reformed Church (for the Action Committee), 1526 Route 161, Fultonville, NY 12072 or to the town of Glen Volunteer Fire Department, 134 Auriesville Road, Fultonville, N.Y.

Daniel 'Duffer' Ryan Sr.

Daniel "Duffer" Ryan Sr., 54, of Gloversville, died early Friday morning at the Nathan Littauer Hospital. Born Aug. 4, 1947, in Gloversville, he was the son of Daniel and Bonnie G. Wilson Ryan. He attended Gloversville schools and was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Ryan was employed by the Colonial Tanning Company of Gloversville for many years. He was a member of the Brothers of the Brush club of Bleecker, N.Y., and an avid hunter. He was survived by two sons, Daniel Ryan Jr. of Stratford, N.Y., and Thomas Ryan of Gloversville; three daughters, Barbara Kilmer of Stratford and Jackie Van Guilder and Colleen Stuart, both of Gloversville; one brother, Timothy Ryan of Gloversville; three sisters, Bonnie Oeser, Colleen Ward and Laurie Ryan, all of Gloversville; 14 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday with the Rev. Wayne Jones, pastor of the Fremont Street United Methodist Church, officiating. Spring interment will take place in the Kings Cemetery, Northampton, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 50 Colvin Ave., Albany, NY 12206.

Adele S. Brown

Mrs. Adele S. Brown, 96, of Wells Nursing Home Inc., Johnstown, died Saturday, Jan. 5, at Nathan Littauer Hospital after a long illness. She was born on July 9, 1905 in Newton, Mass., the daughter of Charles and Frances Fowle Sadler. Mrs. Brown was a member of the Palmaceia Presbyterian Church, Tampa, Fla. She was a homemaker. Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Gillmore of Johnstown and Judith Fechner of Blairsville, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and cousins. On March 12, 1927 she married Donald A. Brown and he died on Sept. 3, 1993. She was also predeceased by one son, David G. Brown, who died Dec. 26, 1993. There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held in the spring. Cremation took place at Vale Crematory, Schenectady. Arrangements are by A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 E. Main St., Johnstown.

Elizabeth G. Conrad

Mrs. Elizabeth G. Conrad, 81, of Maple Avenue, Canajoharie, died unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 5, at home. She was born on July 15, 1920 in Flushing, Long Island, N.Y., the daughter of Charles and Grace Curtin Von der Born. Mrs. Conrad was a graduate of the Fort Plain High School Class of 1939. She had been a resident of the area since 1935. Mrs. Conrad was employed by the former General Telephone Co. as a switchboard operator for 25 years. She was a line and cable assessment clerk at Contel Telephone and retired after 38 years. She was a member of St. James Roman Catholic Church, Fort Plain and a former member of its Altar Rosary Society. She was a member of Catholic Daughters of Americas Court Catherine Esther 1268; and a former member of American Legion Auxiliary Smith Schultze Post 222. She is survived by four sisters, Ellen Post of Canajoharie, N.Y., Alice Collins of Palatine Bridge, N.Y., Ann Touhey of Albany, N.Y. and Rose Bauerle of Cooperstown, N.Y.; several nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews; and one great-great-nephew. She was married on Nov. 27, 1954 at St. James Church, Fort Plain, to Robert John Conrad, who died on April 28, 1999. She was also predeceased by a sister, Lucille Bartlett. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the Chapel of Houghtaling and Smith Funeral Home Inc., 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie. A prayer service will be held at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Reid Street, Fort Plain. The Rev. Kenneth Swain will officiate. Burial will take place at Sts. Peter and Paul's Cemetery in the spring. Thomas P. Joyce

Thomas P. Joyce, 49, of Gloversville, died Sunday at Nathan Littauer Hospital. He was born on March 17, 1952 in Amsterdam, N.Y., the son of John E. and Gertrude Mulvey Joyce. Mr. Joyce moved to the Gloversville area in 1981, where he resided until the time of his death. He was employed by the Lexington Day Treatment Center of Johnstown. He was of the Catholic faith. Mr. Joyce was survived by two brothers, Peter M. Joyce of Mayfield and John E. Joyce of North Bellmore, N.Y.; four sisters, Patricia Doherty, Sue Slovick, Jane Croucher and Michelle Miller, all of Johnstown; several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville, where a prayer service will be held at 11 a.m. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Gloversville. The Rev. David L. Tressic will be celebrant. Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lexington Center, 127 E. Todd A. Schopmeier

Todd A. Schopmeier, 38, of Woodside Avenue, died suddenly on Saturday morning at home. He was born on Aug. 28, 1963 in Amsterdam, a son of Lee Schopmeier and Carol Loucks and was a 1983 graduate of Amsterdam High School. In 1985, he graduated from Alfred Ag & Tech. Todd was a lifelong area resident and had lived in Gloversville for the past two years. At the time of his death, Todd was employed as a carpenter with William R. Dorn Construction Inc. of Johnstown. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. Todd enjoyed motorcycles and was fond of wolves and Native American interests. Survivors include his father and stepmother, Lee and Sara Schopmeier of Broadalbin; his mother, Carol Witzke of Naples, Fla.; stepmother and stepfather, Sandra and Douglas Steenburg of Johnstown; his companion, April Smith of Gloversville; five sisters, Paula McDonald of Naples, Fla., Kristen A. Schopmeier of Gloversville, Rebecca Steenburg of Esperance, Stacey Steenburg of Rochester and Melanie Bunch of Hamburg; three brothers, Thomas L. Schopmeier of Gloversville, Mark and Michael Witzke, both of Naples, Fla.; two uncles; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his stepfather Harold Witzke Sr. and a brother, Harold Witzke Jr., who died during the Gulf War. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 38 W. Main St., Broadalbin, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday. The Rev. Dan Wheeler will officiate. Burial will take place at Hagaman Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Building Fund of the United Presbyterian Church of Amsterdam or to a charity of one's choice, in care of the funeral home.

Everson Van Nostrand

Everson "Beatle" Van Nostrand, 73, of Gloversville, died Sunday at Nathan Littauer Hospital. He was born on Sept. 13, 1928 in Mayfield, N.Y., the son of Ross and Cindy Van Nostrand. He attended Mayfield schools and was a lifelong area resident. He served in the Army during the Korean War from 1950-53. He was a self-employed painter in the area for many years. He is survived by nine sons, Gary, Andy, Larry, Joe, Kenny and Brian Van Nostrand, all of Gloversville, Alan Van Nostrand of Northville, Kevin Van Nostrand of Johnstown and Everson "Beatle" Van Nostrand of Porters Corners, N.Y.; five daughters, Brenda Hayes, Linda Fountain and Helen Tooley of Gloversville, Kim Snell of Benson and Jean Harvey of Bleecker; three brothers, Ted Van Nostrand of Florida, Jason Van Nostrand of Northville and Russell Van Nostrand of Broadalbin; 36 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Mr. Van Nostrand was predeceased by his wife, Bonnie Hillock Van Nostrand; five brothers, Jack, Don, Kenneth, Gerald "Cupe" and Harry Van Nostrand; and two sisters, Betty Handy and Martha Ballweber. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Delbert A. Petsch

Delbert A. Petsch, 68, 2610 Larch Drive, Wooster, Ohio, died Monday morning, Jan. 7, at Wooster Community Hospital. He was born on May 28, 1933 in Brocton, N.Y., the son of Herbert and Vera Deuink Petsch. He was a graduate of Alfred Technical College in Alfred, N.Y. He served in the Navy during the Korean War. He has made his home in the Wooster area for the past 26 years, where he was a building contractor. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, Wooster. Survivors: His wife, Pat Fellows Petsch, whom he married in 1955; children and spouses, Sarah and Scott Myers of Wooster, Julie and Jeff Wagner of Gahanna, Ohio and Thomas and Barbara Petsch of Seattle, Wash.; two grandchildren, Rachel and Tom Myers; sisters, Mary Jane Holcomb of Cassadaga, N.Y. and Kay Miller of Rochester, N.Y. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today and following the memorial service at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. James Episcopal Church. The Rev. Evelyn Manzella will officiate.
