Dorothy Howarth Schriner

Mrs. Dorothy Howarth Schriner, 93, of Kingsboro Avenue, Gloversville, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, at home. She was born on April 30, 1908 in Utica, the daughter of Frederick and Mary Williams Howarth. She attended the Utica Free Academy and the Utica Business School. Mrs. Schriner married Joseph A. Schriner on Sept. 15, 1928 in Utica. They had been married for 73 years and had lived in the same home in Gloversville for 68 years. Mrs. Schriner and some neighbors started the Kingsboro Garden Club 50 years ago, which is still flourishing. She was also a member of the Cayadutta Chapter No. 166, Order of the Eastern Star; Gloversville YWCA; Fulton County Historical Society; Johnstown Historical Society, and the former Fulton County Children's Committee. She was a member of the former Kingsborough Presbyterian Church, which later merged with the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Gloversville. She and her husband loved to travel, spending many winters in Florida. Her favorite northern spot was Ogunquit, Maine. She was very active in the former Gloversville Day Nursery until regulations forced it to close. Mrs. Schriner outlived most of her relatives, with the exception of her 96-year-old husband Joseph of Gloversville, and her godchild, Kathleen Hall of Salem, N.H.. Several cousins also survive. Interment will take place Friday at Forest Hills Cemetery, Utica. Memorial contributions may be made to the Johnstown Historical Society, 17 N. William St., Johnstown, NY 12095; or Fulton County Historical Society, 237 Kingsboro Ave., Gloversville, NY 12078. Private visitation will take place Thursday at the convenience of the family at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., Gloversville.

Freda F. Braender

Freda F. Braender, 59, of Avenue C, Ormond Beach, Fla., died Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Halifax Medical Center, Dayton Beach, Fla. She was born in Gloversville and moved from Amsterdam to Ormond Beach in 1985. She was a retired certified nurse's assistant. She was a member of Calvary Assembly of God Church, Ormond Beach. Survivors include her husband of 29 years, Karl Braender; son, Sean Braender of Schenectady; stepsons, Karl Braender Jr. and Kevin Braender, both of Amsterdam; daughters, Doreen Braender of Schenectady and Karleen Braender of Ormond Beach; stepdaughter, Sarah Braender of Amsterdam; her mother, Dorcas Stutzke of Floral City, Fla.; brother, Jimmy Frederick of Florida; sisters, Mary Mills of Newburgh, N.Y. and Joanne Uhlinger of Broadalbin; and 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Friends are cordially invited to a time of remembrance at 4 p.m. Oct. 6, at their home at 811 Mason St., Schenectady. Matthias Donnelly Jr.

Matthias (Ty) Donnelly Jr., who was a former lightweight amateur boxer under the name Matt Tiger, died Wednesday at home after a long illness. Mr. Donnelly of Kingsboro Towers was 79. Mr. Donnelly was born on Dec. 21, 1921 in Washington, D.C., the son of Matthias F. and Elizabeth C. Donnelly Sr. He was a lifelong area resident and graduated from Gloversville High School. Mr. Donnelly was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He entered on July 30, 1940 and was discharged March 2, 1946, serving in European and Asiatic Pacific region. He received American Service Metal, Asiatic Pacific Service Metal and World War II Victory Metal. He was a leather worker at the former Independent Leather and last employed at the former Continental Silk Mill, both of Gloversville. Mr. Donnelly was of the Catholic faith. He was a member of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, Gloversville; American Legion, and a former member of Ida McGinnis Club. Using the name Matt Tiger, he competed in the Albany Golden Gloves Tournament and had 27 amateur wins. He is survived by his friend and companion, Wanda E. Moyer of Gloversville; six daughters, Mary Marilyn Vicaire of Schenectady, Karen C. Bowman and Patricia A. Lallo, both of Gloversville, Constance S. Vickary of Cobleskill, Wanda J. Horning of Canajoharie, and Ginny Lynne Ahart of Fulton, N.Y.; three sons, Daniel W. Kiskis of Amsterdam, Stephen A. Kiskis and William A. Frederick, both of Gloversville; his stepmother, Mildred Donnelly of Gloversville; his half sister, Sheila Wotcak of Schenectady; 27 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one brother, Edward Donnelly; and two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Chapman and Ann Donnelly. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at John W. Finocan Funeral Home Inc., 13 Prospect Ave., Gloversville. A prayer service will be conducted at 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church. The Rev. Donald Czelusniak, pastor, will be celebrant. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church Building Fund, 149 S. Main St., Gloversville.

Judy Moran Hanson

Judy Moran Hanson, 48, of Marie Drive Fonda, died Sunday morning at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam. She was born on April 2, 1953 in Amsterdam, the daughter of Howard and Loretta Snell Moran. Judy was a lifelong area resident and was a graduate of the Johnstown High School Class of 1971. Judy was employed by Central National Bank, Fonda, for the past six years, currently working as head teller. She also was working part time at Filene's Department Store in Rotterdam Square Mall. She was a member of Tribes Hill Presbyterian Church and served as financial secretary for the church. Survivors include her beloved husband, George F. Hanson, whom she married on Aug. 23, 1975; her loving parents, Howard and Loretta Snell Moran of Tribes Hill; a brother, Charles Moran of Tribes Hill. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends also survive. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tribes Hill Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Barbara Floryshak will officiate. Burial will take place in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill. Memorial contributions may be made to Tribes Hill Presbyterian Church or the Riverfront Cancer Center in care of Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.

Sylvia Millman-Taft

Sylvia Millman-Taft, of Lake George, N.Y. and Lake Worth, Fla., walks with the Lord after a short and brave battle with cancer. She was born on Jan. 21, 1935 in Victory Mills, N.Y. Sylvia was the daughter of Sylvia (Leroux) Millman and John B. Millman. She was a graduate of South Glens Falls Central Schools and received her BA in education from SUNY Plattsburgh and her master's degree from SUNY Albany. Sylvia taught at Kensington Road School in Glens Falls City Schools and retired in 1990. Sylvia was predeceased by her beloved husband, Dr. Russell H. Taft; her parents, Sylvia and John Millman; and her sister, Irene Millman Carayiannis. She is survived by her sister, MaryJean Millman Cleland; her nieces and nephews, Shawn Cleland, her husband, Peter Kiernan and their children, John, Maria, and Daniel; Christopher L. Cleland; Patrick Cleland, his wife, Betsy and their children, Matthew, Bradley, Katy and Schuyler; Constantine (Gus) Carayiannis, his wife, Rosalie and their children, Katina and Emily; Andrew Carayiannis, his wife, Kimberly; Eustacia (Carayiannis) Sander, her husband, Christian and their children, Amanda and Amy. Sylvia is also survived by many beloved friends. Sylvia was involved and instrumental in the development and running of various organizations including:
- Founded the Fort Hudson Landscaping Fund to establish gardens at Fort Hudson Nursing Home's Alzheimer's Unit in memory of her beloved husband. She opened her own private gardens to the public annually as a fundraiser to support those gardens.
- The Millman-Taft Gardens were featured as part of the Chapman Historical Society's annual garden tour.
- Lifetime member of American Hemerocallis Society. Awarded the Regional Service Award for substantial contributions to Region 4. These included:
- Founder of the Hudson Adirondack Daylily Society.
- Editor of the Region 4 Newsletter.
- Opened her gardens for the Region 4 first annual summer meeting in 1997.
- Established and maintained the Kensington Road School's Perennial Garden with her fifth and sixth grade students.
- Member of the American Hosta Society.
- Founder and officer of the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council.
- Affiliate of the Glens Falls Opera Festival.
Sylvia was a benefactor and supporter of the arts and various other organizations. Among her interests were modern dance, ballet, fine arts, and gardening. A funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. today at St. Michael's Church, South Glens Falls. Arrangements are by Regan & Denny Funeral Home, Quaker Road, Queensbury. Friends wishing to make contributions in Sylvia's memory should make them to a charity or arts organization of one's choice.

John Treillet Jr.

John L. Treillet Jr., 63, of Gloversville, died Thursday at home after being stricken. He was born on Sept. 25, 1938, in Gloversville, the son of John and Nancy Morrison Treillet. He graduated from Gloversville High School and was a lifelong area resident. He was employed at Treillet Dental Lab in Gloversville for many years. He is survived by several cousins. There will be no visitation or services from the funeral home. Cremation will take place at Leatherstocking Crematory in Cherry Valley, N.Y. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Northville. Arrangements are by Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville.

Alice B. Reynolds

Alice B. Reynolds, 92, a retired teacher for the Glens Falls School District in Glens Falls, N.Y. died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001 at her residence, 45 Center St. in Geneseo, N.Y. She had previously resided in Warrensburg, N.Y. She is survived by her daughter, Diane (Robert) Armbruster of Geneseo, N.Y. with whom she resided; stepson J.D. (Diane) Reynolds of Lake Placid, N.Y.; three grandsons, Rob Armbruster of Arlingston, Va., Kevin Armbruster of San Diego, CA, Brian Armbruster of Geneseo, N.Y.; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John O. Reynolds on Dec. 6, 1996. She was born Nov. 7, 1908 in Amsterdam, N.Y., the daughter of Charles and Barbara (Schmidt) Belfance. She was a 1929 graduate of Oneonta State Teachers College and taught in the Amsterdam City School District and retired from the Glens Falls School District. Visitation will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Rector-Hicks Funeral Home, 111 Main St. in Geneseo, N.Y. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Northville Funeral Service, 401 Bridge St., Northville, N.Y. Burial will be in King Cemetery, Northville, N.Y. Memorials may be made to the Geneseo Ambulance Fund, Box 428, Geneseo, N.Y. 14454.

George E. Bacon

George E. Bacon, 72, of County Highway 126, Amsterdam, N.Y., died Oct. 9, at the Village Manor in Plainfield, Conn. He was born on April 29, 1929 in Gloversville, N.Y., the son of the late Hugh and Grace (Kuehner) Bacon. Mr. Bacon owned and operated along with his wife, Eleanor (Novak) Bacon, the Bacon Tree Farm. Mrs. Bacon died June 15. Survivors include a son, Doug Bacon of Westminster, Colo.; a daughter, Kitty Harrington of Griswold, Conn.; a sister, Doris DelSignore of Gloversville, N.Y.; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The Gagne-Piechowski funeral Home, 490 Voluntown Road, Route 138, Jewett City, Conn., is in charge of private arrangements.
