Everett D. La Vanway, 64, of Second Avenue Extension, Mayfield, died Saturday at home.

Born in Gloversville, Mr. La Vanway was a lifelong Mayfield resident.

He was employed at the former Coleco for about 30 years and had worked since 1991 at the Pine Brook Golf Course in Gloversville, where he was the groundskeeper.

Survivors include two sisters, Shirley Austin of Mayfield and Beverly Barnes of Gloversville.

There will be no calling hours.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mayfield Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the Amico Funeral Home, 150 S. Main St., Gloversville.
 

Marguerite Hare
September 21, 1996

Marguerite G. Hare, 70, formerly of North Main Street, Broadalbin, died Saturday at the Mount Loretto Nursing Home after a long illness.

Mrs. Hare was born in Fort Johnson and was a graduate of Broadabin High School. She had lived in Broadalbin most of her life.

At one time, Mrs. Hare was employed at the former Decca Record Co. in Gloversville.

She was a member of the Broadalbin Baptist Church and a 37-year member of the Robert Lee Walsh American Legion Post 337 Auxiliary.

She married Howard Hare on June 25, 1949. He died Dec. 28, 1989.

Survivors include a son, Renaire Hare of San Leandro, Calif.; a brother, Emmett Tyler of Columbus, Ga.; two sisters, Catherine Holmes DiDonna of Latham and Eileen Holmes of Warrensburg; and a grandson.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Broadalbin Cemetery. Cremation will take place at the Parkview Crematory, Schenectady.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Loretto Nursing Home or the American Legion Auxiliary in Broadalbin.

Minnie Anderson
September 21, 1996

Miss Minnie M. Anderson, 98, of 71 N. Main St., Broadalbin, died Saturday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.

Miss Anderson was born in Broadalbin and was a graduate of Broadalbin High School. She attended a private college in Cortland, which is now part of the state university.

Miss Anderson was a lifelong resident of Broadalbin.

She taught English and journalism at the former Theodore Roosevelt Junior High School in Amsterdam, retiring in 1962.

Miss Anderson was active in the Girl Scouts for more than 60 years in Amsterdam and Broadalbin and was awarded a Thanks Badge, the highest honor given to an adult scout, by the former Amsterdam Council and the Mohawk Pathways Girl Scout Council.

Miss Anderson was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as church treasurer, elder, Sunday school teacher and committee member.

She was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association, a charter member and past president of the Sacandaga Garden Club in Northville and was a trustee of the Union Mills Cemetery Association.

Survivors include a sister, Pauline H. Anderson of Broadalbin.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church, followed by a reception at the Fellowship Hall.

Cremation will take place at Parkview Crematory in Schenectady. Burial will be private in Union Mills Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Garden Fund of the church.

Gerald Mott
September 20, 1996

Gerald E. Mott, 63, of Helwig Street, Gloversville, died Friday at the Samuel Stratton Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Albany after a long illness.

Born in Bainbridge, Chenango County, Mr. Mott was a graduate of Cooperstown schools. He lived in the Cooperstown area for 20 years before moving to Gloversville.

Mr. Mott was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

He was employed for 24 years by P & C Markets in various locations. He retired as produce manager of the Gloversville store.

Mr. Mott was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2077 and American Legion Post 0579 in Cooperstown.

He married Lucille Drouin Mott on July 12, 1985.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two stepsons, Kenneth Loya of Ontario, Canada, and Harry Loya Jr. of Amarillo, Texas; a daughter, Victoria Mitchell of Richmondville; a brother, Clyde Mott of Endwell, Broome County; four sisters, Lillian Moakler of Cooperstown, Laura Mott of Bainbridge, Eunice Rencarage of Endwell and Betty Cornell of Anderson, Mo.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.

There will be no calling hours.

A graveside service will be conducted at a time to be announced in Evergreen Cemetery in Fonda.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Samuel Stratton Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Jane Brumagham
Sept. 23, 1996

Mrs. Jane Rose Brumagham, 50, of Homestead Drive, Gloversville, died Monday morning at home after being suddenly stricken.

Born Sept. 17, 1946 in Little Falls, she was the daughter of Helen Polinski Surnear. She resided in Johnstown and Gloversville all of her life.

Mrs. Brumagham attended St. Patrick's School in Johnstown.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Church in Johnstown.

Her husband, Charles Brumagham died in 1990.

Survivors include a son, Jason Surnear of Gloversville; her mother, Helen Surnear of Johnstown; two brothers Kenneth and Samuel Surnear of Johnstown; two sisters,Patricia Garner and Susan Hickok both of Gloversville; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Church, Glebe St., Johnstown with the Rev. Joseph Barker, pastor, officiating.

Interment will take place at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Johnstown.
 

Mary Ryan
Sept. 23, 1996

Mrs. Mary R. Ryan, 84, of Division Street, Amsterdam, died Monday afternoon at St. Mary's Hospital following a short illness.

Born on Jan. 16, 1914 in Manassas, Virginia, she moved to the Amsterdam area in 1947.

Mrs. Ryan received a bachelor of arts degree from Randolph-Macon Woman's College, Lynchburg, Va., in 1935, and a bachelor of laws degree from Columbus University, Washington, D.C., in 1940.

She was co-owner with her husband, of the former Ryan Burial Vault Company of Amsterdam.

Mrs. Ryan was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a former member of the Nathan Littauer Hospital Auxiliary.

She was married on Aug. 15, 1942, to Gerald A. Ryan. He died in 1984.

She is survived by her son, Walter T. Ryan of Mayfield; a granddaughter, Catherine Ann Ryan of Mayfield; one uncle and several cousins.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at the Betz Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, with the Rev. Paul Moyer, officiating. The interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. 

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Fulton County Chapter of the American Cancer Society or the Nathan Littauer Hospital Auxiliary, in care of the funeral home.
 

Raymond Pacifico
Sept. 22, 1996

Raymond J. Pacifico, 74, of the Northway Mobile Park, died Sunday evening at his home after a long illness.

Born in Amsterdam Nov. 29, 1921, he was the son of Anthony and Josephine Condello Pacifico.

Mr. Pacifico was a graduate of the Amsterdam school system and was a life-long city resident.

He was first employed with Mohawk Carpet Mills, then with the Schenectady General Electric for 20 years as an electrical plater with the Watervliet Arsenal, retiring in 1984.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church.

He married Angeline Coluni on Oct. 24, 1948.

Mr. Pacifico is survived by his wife; one son, Anthony Pacifico of Lake Waccamaw, North Carolina; two daughters, Josephine Bertrand of Amsterdam and Angela Pacifico at home; one brother, Angelo Pacifico of Kissimee, Fla., one granddaughter, and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Thursday from the DeStefano Funeral Home, Route 5S, Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 at St. Michael's Church. Interment will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. 

Calling hours are Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Frank Frederick Jr.
Sept. 23, 1996

Frank W. Frederick Jr., 60, of Division Street, Fort Plain, died Monday at Albany Medical Center after being stricken at home on Friday.

Born in Amsterdam on Jan. 23, 1936, he was the son of Frank Frederick and Hazel Baker. He was educated in Canajoharie schools.

Mr. Frederick was employed at Beech Nut/Life Savers in Canajoharie for 27 years and at the time of his death he was employed at Lee Dye Company in Johnstown as a machine operator for the last six years.

He was a lifelong area resident.

He married Janice Lyon on April 12, 1996.

Suvivors, including his wife, are three sons, Frank W. Frederick III of Ephratah; David T. Frederick of Nelliston; and Timothy J. Frederick of Fonda; one daughter, Sharon Frederick of Palatine Bridge; his father and step-mother, Frank and Ruth Frederick of Palatine Bridge; one step-son, Robert Cobb of Nelliston; three step-daughters, Tracy Lynn Cobb of Gloversville; Tricia L. Warren of Schenectady; and Teresa R. Cobb, of Amsterdam; one brother, Robert L. Frederick of Palatine Bridge; three sisters, Dorothy Russ, of Canajoharie; Hazel Lewis of Fort Plain; and Patricia Congdon of Mohawk; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating.

Burial will be in Ephratah Rural Cemetery.

Opman Muzzy
Sept. 23, 1996

Opman P. Muzzy, 81, of Sanders Road, Amsterdam and formerly of Engleman Avenue, Scotia, died Monday at home.

Mr. Muzzy was born in Shelburn, Vermont, and was a lifelong area resident.

He worked in quality control in the Small Motors Division with General Electric, Schenectady, for 23 years, retiring in 1976. He was a World War II Navy Veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Helen E. (Bradt) Muzzy whom he married in 1944; a sister, Alice Schutis of Ticonderoga; two grandchildren, Lopi and Jimmy Quist of Amsterdam; great-grandchildren, Nicole and Jimmy Quist II, of Amsterdam.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Bekkering-Ellis Funeral Home Inc., 1 Mohawk Ave., Scotia.

Inerment will be in Maple Shade Cemetery in Scotia.

Calling hour is one hour prior (noon) to the funeral at the funeral home.

Kenneth "Spud" Lewis
Sept. 22, 1996

Kenneth J. Lewis Sr., 60, of Glen Avenue, Amsterdam, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica, after a short illness.

Born April 12, 1936 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Dorothy Walster Lewis and C. Jerome Lewis. He was educated in Amsterdam and was a lifelong resident.

For 28 years, Mr. Lewis worked for the City of Amsterdam, Public Works Department, becoming working foreman in 1986 and sanitation supervisor in 1990. He retired in 1992.

He also worked for King Fuels in Pattersonville for 16 years, retiring in 1992.

Mr. Lewis was a member of the American Federation State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1614.

Survivors include his wife, Amelia Kiskis Lewis, whom he married April 24, 1955; four sons, Kenneth J. Lewis Jr. of Herman, St. Lawrence County; Lawrence and Jerome Lewis, both of Amsterdam; and Michael Lewis of Gloversville; four daughters, Valerie, Laura, and Robbi Lewis and Melissa Faboskay, all of Amsterdam; a brother, Bernie Lewis also of Amsterdam; a sister, Trevelyn Levandusky of Amsterdam; 20 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Boice Funeral Home, 124 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, with Pastor William Emmons officiating.

Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.

Dorothea Becker
Sept. 22, 1996

Mrs. Dorothea L. Becker, 83, of Progress Road, Gloversville, died Sunday at Albany Medical Center after a short illness.

Born and educated in Queens, Mrs. Becker was a graduate of Heffley's Business College in Ridgewood.

She was a secretary to the director of purchasing at the E.R. Squibb Pharmaceutical Company in Brooklyn for 18 years. She moved to Warrensburg in 1948 where she co-owned and operated Andy and Bill's Motel and Restaurant until 1962. In Gloversville, she was a secretary at the Wood & Hyde Leather Company and later at St. Thomas Company, retiring in 1982.

Mrs. Becker was a member and past matron of the Queens Village Chapter 825, Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the St. Monica Chapter 496, OES.

Mrs. Becker was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Johnstown.

Survivors include her husband, Andrew Becker; and a sister, Bertha R. Briers of Gloversville.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Christ Lutheran Church, Johnstown.

There will be no calling hours.

Cremation will take place at Parkview Crematory, Schenectady.

Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Lutheran Church or the Fulton County Chapter of the American Heart Association.

Mary Therrien
Sept. 23, 1996

Mrs. Mary A. Therrien, 90, of Hilltop Road, Sprakers, died Monday at the Palatine Nursing Home after a short illness.

Born in Brooklyn on March 3, 1906, she was the daughter of Stanley and Anne Zdzarstek.

She was educated in Brooklyn.

She worked as a receptionist at a medical office in Brooklyn for a short time.

Mrs. Therrien was a member of St. Peter's and Paul's Catholic Church in Canajoharie.

She was married to Alfred Therrien. He died Oct. 16, 1978.

Survivors include two daughters, Constance Miller of Kitty Hawk, N.C., and Anna Palmateer of Sprakers; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie.

Father William Gaffigan will officiate.

Burial will be in St. Peter's and Paul's Cemetery, Canajoharie.
