Carmen C. Farone, 76, of Johnson Road, Scotia, died Tuesday.
Born in Schenectady, Mr. Farone lived in this area all his life. He
operated a used auto parts business for many years. Mr. Farone had been
a civil defense worker during World War II.
He is survived by a brother, Patsy Farone Sr. of Scotia; two sisters,
Anna DeAngelus of Amsterdam and Mary Potter of Chicago, Ill.; and several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Glenville
Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, Scotia, followed by burial in St. Anthony's
Cemetery, Glenridge Road.
Calling hours are from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
David "Butch" Hojohn
David C. Hojohn, 58, of Cambridge, Vt., died Saturday at his home.
Born March 8, 1938, in Amsterdam, he was the son of Raymond and Beulah
Sheldon Hojohn.
He served in the U.S. Army for 21 years, with three tours of duty in
Vietnam, including serving with the Presidential Flight Detachment.
Mr. Hojohn is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Elkins; a son, David
R. Hojohn Sr.; two sisters, Patricia Santoro and Audrey Byrk; two brothers,
Robert and Thomas; and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter Jill.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday in LaVigne Funeral
Home, 132 Main St., Winooski, Vt., with interment following in Fort Ethan
Allen Cemetery in Colchester, Vt.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
John Slack
John B. Slack, 72, of 192 Prospect Ave., Gloversville, died Sunday at
his home.
Born Jan. 14, 1924, in Speculator, he was the son of Dexter and Amy
Brooks Slack.
He was a 1940 graduate of Wells High School, a 1949 graduate of Union
College, Schenectady, where he studied economics, and received his master's
degree in education in 1956 from New York State College For Teachers in
Albany.
Mr. Slack served in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1944 during World
War II.
He taught American history from 1955 to 1965 at Mayfield Central High
School, where he was a guidance counselor until 1969. He was the principal
of the high school for 10 years, until 1979. He was also superintendent
of the Mayfield Central School District from 1979 until his retirement
in 1986. He also directed plays at the high school for several years.
Mr. Slack was a past president of the Alpha Chapter of the Delta Phi
Fraternity at Union College. He was a member of the Speculator Lions Club,
the School Administrators Association of New York State and past president
of the Tri-County Administrators Association.
He married Jane Ellen Lewis on Jan. 27, 1955. She died April 25, 1996.
Mr. Slack is survived by a son, David L. Slack of Canastota; a daughter,
Betty J. McKinley of New York; a sister, Mary K. West of Hyde Park; a sister,
Dorothy Callan of Stuyvesant; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Walrath
& Bushouer Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, with the Rev. R.W. Williams,
officiating.
There will be no calling hours. Cremation will be at Parkview Crematory
in Schenectady, with final interment at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Drama Club at Mayfield Central
High School.
The Rev. Donald Poulin
The Rev. Donald J. Poulin, 68, pastor of St. Joachim's Church in Beacon,
died Sept. 27 at Roosevelt Hospital in New York.
Born Aug. 9, 1928, in Victory Mills, he was the son of Herbert and Helen
Walsh Poulin.
The Rev. Poulin grew up in Amsterdam and attended St. Mary's Institute.
It was while he was in high school at St. Mary's that he became a charter
member of St. John LaLande Circle, Columbian Squires, and remained active
in the Circle until joining the Knights of Columbus in 1948.
After graduating from St. Mary's in 1946, he attended Union College
in Schenectady for a year, and then transferred to Fordham University.
He worked as a purchasing agent, first for Bigelow Carpets and then for
Doeskin Paper Products.
In September, 1961, he left the secular world and entered St. Philip
Neri School for Delayed Vocations in Boston, a one-year course in Latin
review. In September of 1962, he entered St. Joseph's Seminary, Dunwoodle,
Yonkers, to begin studies for the priesthood in the Archdiocese of New
York.
He was active in the Knights of Columbus, Trinity Council No. 445, where
he was chaplain, and also Chaplain to the New York State Council since
July, 1995; member of the Beacon Clergy Association; member of the Board
of Ethics Committee for the City of Beacon; and a member of the board of
directors and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Beacon-Fishkill.
He is pre-deceased by two brothers, Alton T. Poulin and Carl T. Poulin.
The Rev. Poulin is survived by three brothers, Richard B. Poulin of
Tupper Lake; the Rev. Calvin H. Poulin, S.J., of Nairobi, Kenya; and the
Rev. Neil C. Poulin, S.J., Yap, Federated States of Micronesia; one sister,
Sister Patricia Poulin, C.S.J., Binghamton; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of the Holy Eucharist will be offered at 7:30 tonight at St.
Joachim's Church, 61 Leonard St., Beacon. A funeral Mass will be offered
on Thursday at 10 a.m. with John Cardinal O'Connor as the principal celebrant.
Burial will take place in St. Joachim's Cemetery.
Ruth Samek
Mrs. Ruth J. Samek, 83, of Frontage Road, Gloversville, died Tuesday
at Nathan Littauer Hospital after a long illness.
Born and educated in Gloversville, Mrs. Samek was a lifelong area resident.
She worked for the Edwards Box Co. for more than 20 years, before retiring.
Mrs. Samek was of the Protestant faith.
She is survived by a daughter, Violet Orr of Mayfield; a brother, George
Thompson of Gloversville; a grandson; and two great-grandsons.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Hollenbeck
Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville.
Burial will be Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Alice Burnley
Alice V. Burnley, 91, of Venice, Fla., died Sept. 3.
Born Aug. 28, 1905, in the Town of Florida, she lived in Scotch Bush
and then in Paoli, Pa., before moving to Florida.
Mrs. Burnley was a member of the First Baptist Church in Amsterdam.
Her husband, S. Kenneth Burnley died in 1993.
Survivors include three nieces, Catherine Francisco of Amsterdam; Elizabeth
Lawrence of Broadalbin and Phyllis Palmer of Marcellus and also several
great-nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was conducted at Venice Memorial Gardens, Venice,
Fla.
Arrangements were by the Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Venice, Fla.
Elizabeth "Teddy" Gaetano
Elizabeth Gaetano, 77, formerly of Division Street, Amsterdam, died
late Tuesday at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility
after a long illness.
Born Aug. 21, 1919, in Hagaman, she was the daughter of Antimo and Elvina
Salvione Spagnola. She was educated in Amsterdam and was a lifelong area
resident.
Mrs. Gaetano was employed by Amsterdam Glove & Fownes Bros. Gloves
Inc. until retiring in 1986.
She was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church.
Her husband, Ralph A. Gaetano, whom she married Oct.4, 1942, died June
11, 1992.
Survivors include a son, Ralph A. Gaetano Jr. of Amsterdam; three daughters,
Cheryl Craft of Bloomington, Minn.; Susan Naple of Coronado, Calif.; and
Gayle Gardner of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Louis Spagnola of Amsterdam;
five sisters, Lena Heslan, Pat Cataffo, Evelyn Zumbolo, Olga Cisaretti
and Jean Sheckton all of Amsterdam; 11 grandchildren, nieces, nephews and
cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St.
Michael's Church. Interment will take place in Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Rossi Funeral Home,
11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam.

Viola Ingersoll
Mrs. L. Viola Ingersoll, 90, of the Hillcrest Spring Nursing Home, Amsterdam,
died Wednesday at St. Mary's Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Ontario, Canada, Mrs. Ingersoll came to this country in 1926.
She studied nursing at the Albany Nursing School and graduated in 1929.
She moved to Glen upon her marriage.
Mrs. Ingersoll was a registered nurse at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam,
retiring in 1976.
She was a member and past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star and
a member of the Deborah Glen Study Club.
Mrs. Ingersoll was a member of the Glen Reformed Church.
Her husband, Edward Ingersoll, whom she married June 1, 1935, died in
1962.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Ingersoll of Syracuse and Alex Ingersoll
of San Francisco; two daughters, Nancy Ingersoll of New York City and Doris
Ingersoll of Fultonville; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Jackson
& Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will take place in Maple Avenue Cemetery, Fultonville.

Anna Davis
Mrs. Anna Dybas Davis, 92, of 511 S. W. 11th Ave., Hallandale, Fla.,
formerly of Amsterdam, died Wednesday at the Hallandale Rehabilitation
and Convalescent Center.
Born July 29, 1904, in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of the late Michael
and Mary Kucuiak Dybas. Mrs. Davis attended local schools and was a city
resident until moving to Florida in 1978.
Mrs. Davis was employed as a setter for the Mohawk Carpet Mills before
retiring.
She was a member of St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church.
Mrs. Davis is also a member of the Polish National Alliance.
Her husband, George Davis, died in 1976.
Survivors include a granddaughter, Doreen Fahlman of China Grove, N.C.,
and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Jendrzejczak
Funeral Home, 200 Church St., and at 9 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church, where
a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Helen Buchner
Mrs. Helen L. Buchner, 79, of 91 Wesleyan Ave., Amsterdam, died Wednesday
at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility.
Born Jan. 7, 1917 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Harold and Bertha
Rothen Evenden. She was a lifelong Amsterdam resident.
She graduated in 1935 from the Wilbur H. Lynch High School, and in 1939,
she graduated from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs.
Mrs. Buchner was a homemaker.
Mrs. Buchner worked at the former Oliver's Jewelry Store in Amsterdam
during World War II. She was a member of the Amsterdam Memorial Hospital
Ladies Auxiliary.
She was of the Roman Catholic faith.
Mrs. Buchner was pre-deceased by a daughter, Patricia Buchner who died
in 1958.
She married Lewis L. Buchner on Nov. 30, 1941.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Kathy L. Snyder
of Hilton, Monroe County; and four grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews
and cousins.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Betz Funeral Home,
171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, with the Rev. Victor Polito officiating.
Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

George Cervenka
George F. Cervenka, 47, president of the Galway Central School District
Board of Education, of Jersey Hill Road, Galway, died Tuesday after being
stricken while on business in Houston.
Mr. Cervenka was born in Schenectady. He was a graduate of Scotia-Glenville
High School and the Rochester Institute of Technology.
At the time of his death, Mr. Cervenka was president of Northeast Cleaning
Service, a commercial cleaning and fire restoration service.
Mr. Cervenka served on the board of the Institute of Inspection and
Cleaning Restoration and Certification; was senior vice president of the
New England Institute of Restoration and Cleaning; and was a member of
the Association of Specialists in Cleaning and Restoration.
He served on the board of the West Charlton Cemetery for many years.
He was also a member and past president of the Galway Lions Club and served
as governor's aide of District 719 Lions Club International.
Mr. Cervenka was a former elder of the West Charlton United Presbyterian
Church.
He was a member of the Northeastern Association of the Blind, Albany;
and the Galway Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah Stonka Cervenka; a son, Peter Pesta
of Galway; a daughter, Sherry Pesta of Galway; his mother, Helen Cervenka
of West Glenville; a sister, Barbara Cervenka of Galway; and a brother,
William Cervenka of Hudson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at West Charlton
United Presbyterian Church, routes 147 and 67.
Burial will be in West Charlton Cemetery.
