Edna Waschak, 89, formerly of Mathias Avenue, Amsterdam, died Friday evening at the Baptist Retirement Center in Scotia where she had been a resident for the past three years.

She was born May 18, 1907, in Amsterdam, the daughter of Andrew and Victoria Jastrzemski Tarnowski. She was educated locally and was a lifelong area resident.

She was a setter at the former Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Co. and later worked at the Consolidated Novelty Co. before retiring.

Mrs. Waschak was a member of St. Stanislaus Church and its Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Fourth Ward Seniors.

She was married to Bruno Waschak. He died in 1962.

Survivors include a daughter, Geri Ambrozak of Scotia; a sister, Josephine Brunetto of Albany; a brother, William Tarnowski of Amsterdam; a granddaughter; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church St., Amsterdam, followed at 9 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stanislaus Church.

Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, during which the Rosary will be recited at 5:15 p.m.

Bertha Wood
Oct. 4, 1996

Bertha Mattice Wood, 85, of Burtonville Road, died Friday after being stricken at home. She had lived in Burtonville since 1982, after moving there from Schoharie.

She was employed in the cafeteria at Schoharie Central School for many years before retiring.

Mrs. Wood was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses in Johnstown.

Her husband, Frank H. Wood, died Sept. 19, 1982.

Survivors include a daughter, Rheuama K. Freeman of Burtonville; two brothers, Lester Struder of Sedalia, Mo., and Gordon Manchester of Odessa, Texas.

A graveside service will take place Monday at 1 p.m. at the Lutheran Cemetery in Schoharie. There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Esperance Volunteer Fire Department rescue squad, Esperance 12066; or to a charity of one's choice.

Harvey Fredericks
Oct. 4, 1996

Harvey G. Fredericks, 85, of Logtown Road Ext., Fultonville, formerly of Route 10, Stone Arabia, died Friday after a brief illness at the Fulton County Infirmary, where he had been a patient since August.

He was born in Marshville June 12, 1911, the son of Herman and Catherine Gramps Fredericks. He attended school in Stone Arabia and was a lifelong area resident.

Mr. Fredericks was a dairy farmer at Velvet Acre Farms in Stone Arabia all his working life, before retiring in 1976.

He was a member of the former Stone Arabia Reformed Church, a member of the Fort Plain Reformed Church and attended Inghams Mills Baptist Church.

His first wife, Leona Lape Fredericks, whom he married Oct. 27, 1934, died Feb. 9, 1985. His second wife, Thelma Collins, whom he married April 26, 1986, died April 15, 1995.

He was also predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Jean Fredericks Phillips, who died Feb. 28, 1968.

Survivors include a sister, Julia Groff of Fort Plain,; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Phillips of Fultonville and Lisa Marie Phillips Johnson of Minneapolis; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral is Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Chapel of Houghtaling and Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, with the Rev. Adrian Gray officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.

Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Dorothy Marotta
Oct. 5, 1996

Dorothy R. Marotta, 79, of 10 Fowler St., Hagaman, died Saturday afternoon at the Edward L. Wilkinson Skilled Nursing Facility following a long illness.

She was born Nov. 26, 1916, in Amsterdam, the daughter of Joseph and Eleanor Brower Marotta. She attended local schools and was a lifelong area resident.

Miss Marotta was employed for several years as a winder at Mohasco Industries before retiring in 1955.

She was a member of St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church in Hagaman.

She is survived by several cousins.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at St. Stephen's Church.

Interment will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery.

Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.
 

Alta Jennings
October 6, 1996

Alta Brewer Jennings, 80, of Reservoir Road, Fonda, died Sunday at home.

Born in Patterson, Putnam County, Mrs. Jennings was a graduate of Brewster High School. She lived in Carmel until 1944, and then moved to Fitchburg, Mass. Mrs. Jennings relocated to Westboro, Mass., in 1948 and to Fonda, in 1979.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Jennings was a member of the Fonda-Fultonville United Methodist Church.

Her husband, Frank C. Jennings, whom she married Sept. 22, 1935, died in 1990.

Survivors include a son, Franklin D. Jennings of Fonda; a daughter, Sandra J. Sherwood of Fonda; two sisters, Minnie Paddock of Patterson and Doris Redlon of Towners, Putnam County; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.

David Slack
October 6, 1996

David N. Slack, 56, of Katherine Street, Wells, died Sunday at home after being stricken.

Born in Wells, Mr. Slack was a graduate of Wells High School and a lifelong area resident.

He was employed as a caretaker for many years at Cathead Mountain for the state Department of Environmental Conservation. At the time of his death, Mr. Slack was a spot welder for Hussman Corp., in Gloversville.

Mr. Slack was a communicant of St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church.

Survivors include several nieces and cousins.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Northville Funeral Home, 401 Bridge St., Northville.

Burial will be in Wells Cemetery.

Helen Curran
October 6, 1996

Helen A Curran, 89, formerly of 37 Prospect St., Fultonville, died early this morning at the Montgomery Meadows in Amsterdam after being a resident there since Sept. 1992.

Born Jan,. 19, 1907 in Amsterdam, she was the duahger of Charles F. and Anna Kullick Lieckfeldt. Mrs. Curren lived most of her life in Amsterdan where she was educated. She moved from Amsterdam to Fultonville in 1986. She was employed for a number of years at Amsterdam Printing and Litho Co, Amsterdam, retiring in 1973.

She was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Amsterdam. She was married to Anthony Curran who died July 14, 1962. Mrs. Curran was pre-deceased by a daughter, Marilyn A. Phelps who died Aug. 30, 1976.

Survivors include two granddaughters, Cindy Rivera of Fultonville and Karen Lieckfeldt of Amsterdam and a brother, Edward Lieckfield of Amsterdam; four great-grandchildren, and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Betz Funeral Home Inc. 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam with the Rev. William E. Siiss officiating.

Burial will be Greenhill Cemetery Amsterdam.

Ruth Frederick
October 6, 1996

Ruth F. Frederick, 81, of Valley View Apartments, Palatine Bridge, died Sunday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

Born in Hartford, Conn., on May 26, 1915, she was the daughter of Winfield Flanigan and Elnora Failing. She graduated from Canajoharie High School and attended the Nathan Littauer Hospital School of Nursing.

She was employed by various nursing homes in the area as a nurse and also did private duty nursing for many years before retiring.

Mrs. Frederick was a lifelong area resident.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Stone Arabia.

Mrs. Frederick was a former 4-H leader in the Montgomery County area. She was also a Sunday School teacher and a Vacation Bible School teacher at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Her first husband, William N. Winsman, died June 15, 1956. Her second husband, Mortimer Weaver, died July 13, 1984.

She married Frank Frederick Sr., on Oct. 21, 1989.

Survivors, including her husband, are one son, Wayne N. Winsman of Palatine Bridge; one daughter, Rose Ann Matthews, of Broadalbin; seven step-daughters, Charlotte Handy of Canajoharie; Mary Simpson of Palatine Bridge; Florence Christoph of Selkirk; Lin Zubel of Phoenix, Ariz.; Dorothy Russ of Canajoharie; Hazel Lewis of Fort Plain; and Patricia Congdon of Mohawk; two stepsons, Charles Weaver of Greensboro, N.C., and Robert L. Frederick of Palatine Bridge; one brother, Richard S. Flanigan of Waterbury, Vermont; two sisters, Jean Wetherbee of Hillsboro, New Hampshire; and Fay Dollard of Groton, Conn.; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren and several step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Route 10, Stone Arabia. The Rev. John Omans will officiate.

Burial will take place in Fort Plain Cemetery.

William Clapper
October 7, 1996

William N. Clapper Sr., 95, formerly of Mickle Hollow Road, Warnerville, died Monday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Mr. Clapper was a resident of the Palatine Nursing Home since 1992.

He was born in Richmondville and was a lifelong area resident.

Mr. Clapper operated a dairy farm on Mickle Hollow Road, and also worked for Harder Refrigeration, D&H Railroad, and the Cobleskill Rural Cemetery before retiring.

His wife, Julia Hadsell Clapper, died in 1985 and his son, William N. Clapper Jr., died in 1995.

Survivors include three daughters, Marjorie Gorton of Waterville and Shirley Seward and Linda Adams-Teytand, both of Carlisle; two sons, Roy Clapper of Carlisle and Jerry Clapper of Cobleskill; 23 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill.

Burial will be in Carlisle Cemetery.

Isabel Rivera
October 7, 1996

Isabel Rivera, 90, of Wall Street, Amsterdam, died Monday at St. Mary's Hospital.

Mrs. Rivera was born Jan. 10, 1906 in Las Maria, Puerto Rico, a daughter of Jose and Bartola Santiago. She moved to Amsterdam in 1951, where she had since resided. Mrs. Rivera was a homemaker.

Mrs. Rivera was employed by Amsterdam Glove Company for several years. She was a communicant of St. Michael The Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam. 

Mrs. Rivera was a founding member of the Spanish American Club in Amsterdam and was also a member of the Hispanic Senior Citizens Group, also of Amsterdam.

Survivors include her husband, Luis Rivera; one son, Norberto Rios, two daughters, Daisy Rivera and Rachel Dormond all of Amsterdam; one brother, Jose Angel Roca of Dumont, N.J.; 22 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Rivera was pre-deceased by a daughter, Elsa Santiago, on March 8, 1993.

Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam, followed at 9:15 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Michael's Church.

Burial will take place in St. Michael's Cemetery.

Christine Davis
October 8, 1996

Mrs. Christine Davis, 79, of Ellenville, died Tuesday at Ellenville Community Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Valdosta, Ga., Mrs. Davis moved to Ellenville in 1948.

She was a founding member of Shiloh Baptist Church of Ellenville, where she served in numerous capacities.

Her husband, Harley Davis, died in 1980.

Survivors include three daughters, Valerie Beekman and Tina Macky, both of Amsterdam; and Belinda Davis of Ellenville; two sisters, Virginia McDonald of Deerfield, Fla.; and Rosie Lee Williams of Miami, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Shiloh Baptist Church, Berme Road, Ellenville.

Burial will be in Pine Bush Cemetery, Kerhonkson.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the church.

Donald Stewart
October 9, 1996

Donald M. Stewart Jr., 64, of Griffis Road, Gloversville, died Wednesday at Nathan Littauer Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Fonda, Mr. Stewart resided in Gloversville most of his life.

From 1952 to 1954, he served with the Army.

For more than 20 years, Mr. Stewart was a draftsman for the General Electric Company in Schenectady until retiring.

Survivors include a son, Donald M. Stewart III of Hope; two brothers, Ralph "Pete" Stewart and William H. Stewart both of Gloversville; a stepdaughter, Kim Williams of Gloversville; his mother, Marion Esther Stewart of Gloversville; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Fonda.

Helen Gronkowski
October 9, 1996

Mrs. Helen Underhill Gronkowski, 81, of the Baptist Retirement Center, formerly of Washington Avenue, Scotia, died Wednesday at the home.

Born in Richmondville, Mrs. Gronkowski lived in the Cobleskill area before moving to Schenectady and to Scotia 42 years ago.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Gronkowski was a communicant of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Her husband, John Z. Gronkowski, died in 1990.

Survivors include two daughters, Naomi Watson of West Monroe and Linda Neals of Scotia; two sons, Larry Ahl of Escondido, Calif., and Dennis Ahl of Sprakers; five sisters, Catherine Tilison of Warnerville, Evelyn France of Schoharie, Barbara Lambert and Norma Simmons, both of Cobleskill, and Carol Holloway of Richmondville; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church Parish Center, MacArthur Drive.

Calling hours will be held today from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Bekkering-Ellis Funeral Home, 1 Mohawk Ave., Scotia.

Burial will be in Park Cemetery.

Mary Coloney
October 9, 1996

Mary J. Coloney, 92, of 6 Pearl St., Gloversville, died Wednesday at Nathan Littauer Hospital, following a long illness.

Born May 14, 1904 in Hoboken, N.J., she was the daughter of Anthony and Carmella D'Amica Manno.

She resided in Schenectady as a child, and in Gloversville most of her life. Mrs. Coloney lived at the Fulton County Infirmary since April of this year.

She attended Gloversville schools.

Mrs. Coloney was employed at the former Kingsboro Silk Mill, Geraldine Novelty Company; Winig Slipper Company and last at Glenwood Shoe Factory, all in Gloversville. She retired in 1966.

She was of the Catholic faith. Mrs. Coloney was past president of the former Berkshire PTA.

She was pre-deceased by her grandson Timothy Dean Smith in 1993 and a sister, Frances Spina in 1994.

She married Herschel Coloney Sr. on Jan. 30, 1925. He died Jan. 18, 1988.

Survivors include her son, Herschel Coloney Jr., of Gloversville; a daughter, Eleanor M. Smith, also of Gloversville; a sister, Carmella Tausz of Wayne, N.J.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville where services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. R.W. Williams, chaplain of Mountain Valley Hospice officiating.

Robert Dillon
October 9, 1996

Robert M. Dillon, 86, formerly of Petoff Garden Apartments, died Wednesday morning at the Mount Loretto Nursing Home following a short illness.

Born in Milwaukee, WI., on June 22, 1910, he was the son of Paul J. and Margaret Dillon and was educated in schools there. At one time he lived in the Johnstown area and later moved to California. He returned to this area in 1990.

While in California, Mr. Dillon was employed with the Union Pacific Railroad in Southern California, retiring in 1971. Upon his return to Gloversville, he was employed as a golf pro at the Holland Meadows Golf Course until this spring.

Mr. Dillon was a World War II Navy Veteran.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Broadalbin.

Mr. Dillon was a member of the United Transportation Union No. 1117 of Cleveland, Ohio.

Survivors include a daughter, Michele Furnare of Glen and three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Stephen's Cemetery in Hagaman with the Rev. Ronald Matuliewicz officiating. There will be no calling hours.

Harry Berry
October 9, 1996

Harry John Berry, 47, of Canal Street, Fort Plain, died suddenly Wednesday at Albany Medical Center Hospital.

Born in Cooperstown on Nov. 12, 1948, he was the son of Harry E. Berry and Selma Carrigan. He graduated from Fort Plain High School in 1967 and graduated from Fulton-Montgomery Community College in Johnstown.

Mr. Berry had worked at Keymark-Kasson & Keller in Fonda for many years and was also a drummer for several bands in the area.

He was a lifelong area resident.

He was of the Catholic Faith.

In addition to his parents, survivors include one brother, David P. Berry of Covington, Ky.; two aunts, and several cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, at 10 a.m. at the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain.

Father Kenneth Swain will officiate.

Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
