Elizabeth C. Newkirk, 81, of Swan Street, Johnstown, died Thursday at
the Fulton County Infirmary.
Born Sept. 26, 1915 in Scotch Bush, she was the daughter of Warren and
Elizabeth Dare Clute. She moved to Amsterdam when she was 7 years old.
She was a 1932 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School.
Mrs. Newkirk moved to Johnstown in 1950. She was employed as a waitress
at the Corner Restaurant for 15 years and later at the Manor House Restaurant
in Gloversville in the same capacity before retiring in 1976.
She married Earl S. Newkirk on Oct. 19, 1935. He died June 18, 1977.
Mrs. Newkirk was a member of the North Bush United Methodist Church
of Caroga Lake and also the Women of the Moose in Johnstown.
Survivors include four sons; Roger E. and Earl II Newkirk of Caroga
Lake, Warren J. Newkirk of Rensselaer and Robert W. Newkirk of Scotia,
two daughters, Carol E. Monroe of Kentucky and Karen A. LaVoie of Randall;
a brother, Warren B. Clute of Amsterdam; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren
and one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the Betz Funeral
Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam. Burial will take place in the
spring in the Chuctanunda Cemetery, Minaville.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Bush United Methodist Church.
Gloria Knoll
Gloria Marie Knoll, 67, of 156 Riceville Road, Mayfield, died Thursday
at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville following a long illness.
Born April 12, 1929 in Gloversville, she was the daughter of Ronald
and Catherine McNicholas Burgess. Mrs. Knoll was a lifelong area resident
and was a graduate of Mayfield Central School.
Along with her husband, she owned and operated the Knoll's Market in
Mayfield since 1948.
Mrs. Knoll was a member of the Bannertown Senior Citizens Club.
She married Ronald G. Knoll on March 18, 1948.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Jack Knoll of
Washington, D.C., and Michael Knoll of Gloversville; a daughter, Jean Krom
of Mayfield; a sister, Patricia Wessendorf of Sebastian, Fla., nine grandchildren,
one nephew and three nieces.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday
at Sacred Heart Church with the Rev. Thomas J. Boyle officiating. Burial
will be in Mayfield Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Walrath
& Bushouer Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville.

Joseph Murphy
Joseph P. Murphy, 84, of Glen Avenue, Amsterdam, died Thursday at St.
Mary's Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Amsterdam, he was the son of Thomas and Mary Collins. Mr. Murphy
was a graduate of St. Mary's Institute. He was a weaver at Mohasco Industries,
retiring in 1973.
Mr. Murphy was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the
Signal Corps.
He married Beulah Davison Murphy on Oct. 4, 1952.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, David Murphy
of Napierville, Ill., Daniel Murphy of Amsterdam and Joseph Murphy of St.
Albans, Vt.; a sister, Katherine Murphy of Amsterdam and three grandchildren,
Jessica, Megan and Erin Murphy.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's
Church, 156 E. Main St., Amsterdam. Burial will take place in St. Mary's
Cemetery, Fort Johnson.
Calling hours are from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Riley Mortuary,
110 Division St.

Harold Wilson
Harold W. Wilson, 87, a resident of the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington,
died Thursday evening.

Harold Wilson
Former Broadalbin resident Harold W. Wilson, 87, died Thursday evening
at the Vermont Veterans Hospital in Bennington, where he had been a resident
since 1988.
Born March 8, 1909 in Gloversville, he was the son of Howard and Ellen
Sweet Wilson. He attended Gloversville schools and was a lifelong area
resident until moving to New Smyrna, Fla. for 10 years.
Mr. Wilson was employed as a fur cutter and later as a glove cutter,
retiring several years ago from the Superb Glove Co. in Johnstown. He was
also a self-employed carpenter.
Mr. Wilson was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, obtaining the
rank of staff sergeant.
He was a former member of the American Legion Post 337 in Broadalbin.
Survivors include his son, Robert F. Wilson of Gloversville, four grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date. Cremation will
be at Parkview Crematory in Schenectady.
There will be no calling hours.

Jane Hepinstall
Jane N. Hepinstall, 80, of Albany died Tuesday at St. Peter's Hospital
in Albany.
She was born in Amsterdam and lived in Albany most of her life.
She was a communicant of Holy Cross Church and a former member of its
Ladies Guild and senior citizens. She was also a member of AARP Chapter
78.
She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Dr. James T. Hepinstall,
and a son, James T. Hepinstall Jr.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Jane Flanigan of Delmar and Katherine
and JoAnna Hepinstall, both of the Albany area; a sister, Bridget Bubniak
of Amsterdam; five grandchildren and several nephews.
The funeral is today at 9:15 a.m. at the Hearley & Son Funeral Home,
1561 Western Ave., Albany, and 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Church.
Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.
Kenneth Rand
Kenneth Frederick Rand, 82, of Fredericks Street, Canajoharie, died
Friday at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, following a long illness.
He was born in Syracuse March 18, 1914, the son of Frederick and Grace
Elmslie Rand. He was educated in Syracuse schools and moved to the Canajoharie
area in 1941.
Mr. Rand was employed by the Village of Canajoharie in the waste treatments
plant maintenance department, retiring in 1976. He was formerly employed
by Voght's Garage and LaSalle Laboratory.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association.
He married the former Lois Gardner March 18, 1937, in Verona.
Survivors include his wife, of Canajoharie; two daughters, Joyce A.
French of Fort Plain and Dawn E. Herting of Palatine Bridge; two sons,
Robert G. Rand of Fort Plain and Terry A. Rand of Canajoharie; 12 grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled 1 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Houghtaling
& Smith Funeral Home Inc., 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, with the Rev.
Kenneth Dingman officiating.
Burial will be in Ames Cemetery.

Elizabeth Quinn
Elizabeth Crowley Quinn, 71, of Third Avenue, Tribes Hill, died Thursday
at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam.
She was born in Amsterdam Jan. 26, 1925, the daughter of John J. and
May McPhilomy Crowley.
Mrs. Quinn was educated at St. Mary's Institute and was a graduate of
its class of 1942.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Quinn was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, Tribes Hill, and
a member of the Iroquois Senior Citizens Group.
She is survived by two sons, J. Michael Quinn of Carrollton, Texas,
and Timothy A. Quinn of Tribes Hill; a daughter, Patricia Quinn of Fort
Hunter; a sister, Helen Bush of Amsterdam; three grandchildren, one great-grandchild,
nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a son, Mark J. Quinn.
Funeral services are Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110
Division St., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m.
at Sacred Heart Church, Tribes Hill.
Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill.
Calling hours are Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the mortuary.

Lynne Lasky-Case
Lynne M. Lasky-Case, 38, of Deer Path, Schenectady, died Friday at St.
Peter's Hospital, Albany, after a long illness.
She was born in Amsterdam April 26, 1958, the daughter of Anthony and
Dorothy Dybas Lasky. She lived in the Amsterdam area and was educated here
before moving to Schenectady.
She was a 1976 graduate of Bishop Scully High School in Amsterdam and
graduated in May 1980 from the State University of New York at Geneseo
with a bachelor's degree in speech and language pathology, audiology and
psychology. In 1981 she received her master's of science degree in speech
and language pathology.
She was a speech and language audiologist for the Greater Amsterdam
School District.
Mrs. Lasky-Case was a member of the American Speech, Language and Hearing
Association.
She was a member of the Church of St. John the Baptist in Amsterdam,
was a parish council member, secretary of the Ladies Rosary Society and
a member of the Albany Diocese Amsterdam Cluster Committee.
She married Robert M. Case Aug. 4, 1985.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, of Schenectady, and parents,
of Amsterdam, include a daughter, Alicia Anne Case, and a son, Marc Robert
Case, both of Schenectady; a brother, Richard A. Lasky of Latham; a sister,
Kathleen S. Delongchamp of Amsterdam; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and
cousins.
Funeral services are 9:15 a.m. Monday at the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel,
13 Belmont Place, followed at 10 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at
the Church of St. John the Baptist.
Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery.
Calling hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel.

Anthony Da Biere
Anthony J. Da Biere, 80, of John Street, Tribes Hill, died Saturday
morning at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, following a short illness.
He was born May 20, 1916, in Amsterdam, the son of Clement and Arcangela
SanFilippo Da Biere. He lived in Amsterdam and Fonda before moving to Tribes
Hill in 1967.
Mr. Da Biere at one time owned and operated the former DeBerry's Hotel
in Fonda. He later owned and operated De's Billiard Lounge and Miniature
Golf on Route 30. He retired in 1980.
He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Tribes
Hill.
He married Nell Bujanowski Aug. 26, 1934.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Richard and Anthony
Da Biere, both of Tribes Hill; a daughter, Betty Ann Duell of Tribes Hill;
three brothers, Michael, James and Clement Da Biere, all of Amsterdam;
five grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral service is Wednesday at 8:15 a.m. at the Betz Funeral Home
Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial
at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Tribes Hill.
Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill.

John Hamblin
John H. Hamblin, 88, of Route 80, Starkville, died Thursday evening
at Valley Health Services in Herkimer after a short illness.
Born July 9, 1908 in the Town of Stark, he was the son of James Hamblin
and Carley Shaver. He was educated in the Fort Plain schools.
Mr. Hamblin was employed by the Town of Stark Highway Department in
many capacities for many years and was later employed by the Fort Plain
Cemetery for 25 years, retiring in 1981.
He was a lifelong area resident and a member of the Starkville United
Methodist Church. He was the caretaker of the church for more than 50 years
and Town of Stark historian for many years.
He married Florence O. Stiles on Aug. 23, 1941. She died Nov. 8, 1993.
Survivors include a son, Edward Aney of Herkimer; a daughter, Christine
Dager of St. Johnsville; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Starkville
United Methodist Church, Route 80, Starkville, under the direction of the
Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain. The
Rev. Joseph Timlin will officiate.
Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.

Howard Ward
Howard E. Ward, 78, of the St. Johnsville Nursing Home, formerly of
Fordsbush, died Sunday at the nursing home after a long illness.
Born Nov. 10, 1918 in Minden, he was the son of Willard Ward and Izora
Ash. Mr. Ward was educated in the Fordsbush Country schools.
He was a dairy farmer in Minden on his own farm for 50 years, retiring
in 1986.
Mr. Ward was a lifelong area resident and lived at the nursing home
since 1992. He was a member of Dairyman's League Co-Op.
He was of the Lutheran faith.
Mr. Ward married Ruth Wheadon on Sept. 14, 1940, in Canajoharie. She
died April 21, 1986.
Survivors include a son, Dale H. Ward of Fort Plain; a sister, Leona
Wheadon, also of Fort Plain; three grandchildren, Nancy Wengenack of Rochester,
Minn., Deborah Waner of Fort Plain, and Thomas Ward of Palatine Bridge;
two great-grandchildren and one niece.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Gray-Houghtaling
& Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain, with the Rev. Kenneth
Dingman officiating.
Burial will take place in Fort Plain Cemetery.

Grace Earing
Grace W. Earing, 77, of Prospect Street, Canajoharie, died this morning
at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, after being stricken at her home.
Born Sept. 9, 1919 in Springfield, she was the daughter of Haswell Edick
and Evelyn Head. Mrs. Earing was educated in the Springfield schools and
the Owen D. Young Central School in Van Hornesville.
She was employed by the LifeSavers plant in Canajoharie as a gum machine
operator for 21 years, retiring in 1982.
Mrs. Earing was a resident of Canajoharie for more than 50 years. She
and her husband spent summers at their camp on Lake Champlain.
She married Carl C. Earing on June 15, 1951.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Susan Jean
Burnham of Bloomingdale, Mich.; a son, Gregory Kimball of Mechanicsburg,
Ohio; two brothers, Vincent "Gene" Edick of Canajoharie and Arthur Edick
of Vancouver, Wash.; and 14 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son,
Terry Kimball.
Burial will be private. There are no calling hours.

Eleanor Van Steenburgh
Mrs. Eleanor E. Van Steenburgh, 80, of River Street, Gloversville, died
Sunday at home after a long illness.
Mrs. Van Steenburgh was born in Johnstown.
She was a hairdresser and also was employed as a licensed practical
nurse at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital and later at the Fulton County Infirmary
until retiring many years ago.
Mrs. Van Steenburgh was a communicant of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church.
She married Harry Van Steenburgh on June 21, 1941.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Thomas Van Steenburgh
of Gloversville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St.
Mary of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will be in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown.

Emma Cubit
Mrs. Emma Brown Cubit, 85, of Route 9, Ballston Spa, died Friday at
the Hallmark Nursing Centre in Rotterdam after a long illness.
Born in Amsterdam, Mrs. Cubit lived in the Schenectady area for more
than 50 years.
She was a former member of the South Schenectady Fire Department Ladies
Auxiliary and the Bellevue Reformed Church.
She married Fred Cubit on Aug. 30, 1935. He died in 1978.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Wright of Malta and Beverly Hansen
of Huntington Station; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon today at the Bond Funeral
Home, Broadway and Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady. There will be no calling
hours.

Stella Godey
Mrs. Stella L. Godey, 92, formerly of Catherine Street, Amsterdam, died
Sunday evening at the Montgomery Meadows Residential Health Care Facility
following a long illness.
