Clayton H. Leonard, 22, of Wall Street, died Wednesday morning at his home.

Born Oct. 7, 1974 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Virginia Lindquist Leonard and the late Raymond Leonard. He was a lifelong area resident.

Mr. Leonard was educated in the Amsterdam and Galway school districts.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Leonard of Gloversville and Joseph Leonard of Amsterdam; twin daughters, Virginia and Elizabeth Leonard of Amsterdam; his mother, Virginia Kowal and step-father Richard Kowal of Amsterdam; a step-brother, Michael Kowal of Amsterdam; his grandmother, Violet Lindquist of Galway; his step-great-grandmother, Tatiana Kowal of Hagaman; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Riley Mortuary, 110 Division St., Amsterdam.

Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Monday at the mortuary with the Rev. John Becker officiating.

Spring interment will be in Foster Hill Cemetery, Galway.

Contributions in Mr. Leonard's memory may be made to Montgomery County Transitional Services Inc. in care of the Riley Mortuary.
 

Frances Grey
January 11, 1997

Mrs. Frances Grey, 82, of Millers Corners Road, Delanson, formerly of Amsterdam, died Saturday morning at home following a short illness.

She was born Nov. 11, 1914 in Amsterdam, a daughter of the late Frank and Mary Wolska Druciak. She was educated locally and lived in the area all of her life.

Mrs. Grey was employed as a frame spinner at the former Mohawk Carpet Mills. She also was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church.

Joseph Grey, whom she married July 18, 1936, died Jan. 7, 1989.

Survivors include three daughters, Patricia Leone of Amsterdam, Marlene Egan of Delanson and Sandra Gutowski of Buffalo; two sisters, Winifred Sajta and Bernice Archambeault, both of Amsterdam; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be 5 to 9 p.m. today at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church St., Amsterdam.

Funeral services will be 8:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, followed at 9 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stanislaus Church.

Spring interment will be in Hagaman Cemetery, Hagaman.

Constance Tracz
January 8, 1997

Constance V. Tracz, 84, of School Street, Wellsville, formerly of Amsterdam, died Wednesday at Highland Healthcare Center in Wellsville, following a long illness.

Born Jan. 23, 1912, in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of William and Mary Wojtkiewicz. She was a graduate of Amsterdam High School.

Mrs. Tracz was employed for many years as a seamstress for the Whitestag Clothing Company in Amsterdam.

She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church in Amsterdam. She was also a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville and a member of the Rosary Society of the Church.

She married John A. Tracz on June 6, 1938. He died Oct. 17, 1987.

Survivors include one son, Dr. William Tracz of Atlanta, Georgia; one daughter, Barbara Hetzel of Wellsville; one brother, Edward Wojtkiewicz of Amsterdam; two sisters, Florence Reisigl and Eleanor Wytrwal, both of Amsterdam; two granddaughters; three grandsons; and nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family with burial in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Wellsville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville.

Edith Graff
January 11, 1997

Miss Edith Graff, 92, of Pleasant Avenue, Johnstown, died Saturday at the Wells Nursing Home after a short illness.

Born in Johnstown, Miss Graff was a 1925 graduate of Johnstown High School and a 1929 graduate of Taylor University. She earned a master's degree from Columbia University in 1933.

Miss Graff was employed by the Fulton County Department of Social Services, retiring in the early 1970s.

She was a member and Sunday school teacher at the First United Methodist Church of Johnstown and a member of its Daughters of Wesley.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

A service is set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home, 215 E. Main St., Burial will be in the spring in Johnstown Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Johnstown Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
 

Frances Grey

John Stortecky
January 12, 1997

John J. Stortecky, 74, of Hall Avenue, Johnstown, died Sunday at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, after a short illness.

Born and educated in Johnstown, Mr. Stortecky joined the Navy in 1942 and served during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was an aviation machinist's mate aboard the USS Bennington and in July 1970 ended his career with the rank of chief petty officer in charge of jet engine rebuilding at the Alameda Naval Air Station in California.

Mr. Stortecky was later employed as a mechanic at Shepard Oil Company and as a coat cutter for Jules T. Garfall until 1995.

He was a member of St. Anthony's Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 510, the Fleet Reserve Association and the American Association of Retired Persons.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Ryder Stortecky, whom he married Oct. 24, 1947; a daughter, Joan Catucci of Johnstown; two sons, John M. Stortecky of Benson, Hamilton County and Stephen Stortecky of Johnstown; a sister, Rose Colson of St. Johnsville; and three grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony's Church.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, Main and Melcher streets.

Burial with military honors will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
 

Howard Dynes
January 12, 1997

Howard J. Dynes, 83, of Brookside Avenue, Amsterdam, died Sunday at St. Mary's Hospital.

Mr. Dynes was born March 29, 1913 in Amsterdam, a son of Pierce and Emily Lindsay Dynes. He graduated from the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School in 1930. Mr. Dynes served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1933 he accepted a position with the former Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Company holding several supervisory positions. He was then employed by the former Mohasco Corp. as manager of Cost Estimating until his retirement. Mr. Dynes was a member and former Elder of the United Presbyterian Church.

He was also a member of Artisan Lodge No. 84 F. & A.M.; Cyprus Temple, Ancient Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine in Albany; Amsterdam Shrine Club; AMVETS of World War II; Post 21 of Amsterdam. Mr. Dynes was also a former member of the Hurricana Club; former Industrial Training Council of New York State Cornell University; former trustee of the Amsterdam YMCA; former director of the United Way of Amsterdam; former executive secretary of Montgomery County Civil Service; former commissioner of the Montgomery County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board; former Montgomery County Personnel Director; and past treasurer of Montgomery County Republican Club. 

He married the former Margaret E. McCrum on Jan. 26, 1952. 

In addition to his wife, Mr. Dynes is survived by his daughter, Leslie Ann Dynes of Amsterdam; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Johnson-Lindsay Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam with the Rev. Dan J. Wheeler officiating.

A calling hours will preceed the service beginning at 10 a.m.

Burial will be in the spring in the Hagaman Cemetery.

Joseph Izzo

January 11, 1997

Joseph A. Izzo Jr., 68, of Beekman Street, Saratoga Springs, died Saturday at home.

Mr. Izzo was born in Saratoga Springs and lived there all his life. He attended Saratoga Springs schools and was active in varsity sports.

Mr. Izzo worked on track maintenance for the D&H Railroad unril retiring in 1988. He was an Army veteran and a member of the Saratoga Springs American Legion Post and the Italian-American War Veterans.

Mr. Izzo is survived by his wife, Barbara Farr Izzo; two daughters, Deborah Izzo of Waterford and Bonny Robens of Saratoga Springs; two sons, Joseph Izzo III of Galway and Frank Izzo of Fort Edward; a brother, Anthony Izzo of Saratoga Springs; and three grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of St. Peter. Burial will take place in St. Peter's Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Simone's Funeral Home, 3 Franklin Square.

Katherine Conover
January 11, 1997

Mrs. Katherine S. Conover, 103, of Santa Barbara, Calif., died Saturday.

Mrs. Conover was born June 5, 1893 in West Haven, Conn., a daughter of William T. and Dorcas Welply Savage. She moved to Amsterdam as a child and was a graduate of St. Mary's Institute, Class of 1909. Mrs. Conover had been an organist for St. Mary's, St. Michael's and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Churches while residing in Amsterdam. She moved to Santa Barbara in 1968, where she had since resided.

She married Kenneth P. Conover on July 31, 1916. He died in 1973. 

Mrs. Conover is survived by two sons, Robert Conover of Amsterdam, and Paul Conover of Santa Barbara; two daughters, Marie Therese and Sarah Conover both of Santa Barbara; three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held in Santa Barbara, Calif. A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Fort Johnson.

There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Institute Building Fund.

Genevieve "Gen" Koryzma
January 13, 1997

Miss Genevieve M. "Gen" Koryzma, of Milton Avenue, Amsterdam, died Monday evening at St. Mary's Hospital after a short illness.

Born on Sept. 3, 1921 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Nicholas and Teofila Podhorodecka Koryzma. Miss Koryzma was a lifelong area resident. She was educated locally and was a 1940 graduate of the Wilbur H. Lynch High School. She was also a graduate of the former Spencer Business School in Amsterdam.

She was employed by the Federal Government at the Naval Depot in Scotia, until retiring in 1980.

Miss Koryzma was a member of the Church of St. John The Baptist and its Ladies Rosary Society. She was a member of the former St. Cecelia's Choir, a former member of St. John's Parish Council; was a religious education teacher for the church; a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society; was a member of St. John's Seniors; was a St. John's Pierogi Lady and was a member of the Polish Union of America, currently serving as secretary for the local district; and also was a member of Club 60.

Miss Koryzma is survived by one sister, Winifred T. Bien of Amsterdam, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30a.m. Thursday at the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel, 13 Belmont Place, followed at 10a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of St. John the Baptist. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the St. John's Cemetery Fund.
