Joseph A. Bandos, 83, of Ballston Avenue in Saratoga Springs, died Tuesday
morning at St. Mary's Hospital in Troy after a short illness.
Born March 13, 1913 in Schenectady, he was the son of Valentine and
Magdalena Bandos. He attended local schools and was a lifelong area resident,
moving to Saratoga Springs in 1982.
At one time, he worked for the General Electric Co. in Schenectady.
Later, he worked for Condec in Scotia, retiring in 1972.
Mr. Bandos was of the Roman Catholic faith.
Survivors include his wife, Josephine Fura Bandos, whom he married Aug.
14, 1943; three daughters, Loretta Jessop of Amsterdam, Shirley Bandos
of Pinellas Park, Fla., and Patricia McGuire of Ballston Lake; and several
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Edward B. Walker
Edward B. Walker, 66, of Florida Avenue in Amsterdam, died Tuesday at
home after a long illness.
Born in Longview, Wash., he was the son of Jack and Enid Wickwire Walker.
Mr. Walker was a graduate of Kelso High School.
After World War II, he began a 20-year military career with the Air
Force as an aircraft mechanic in Japan. Subsequently, he served in combat
operations during the Korean and Vietnam wars until 1967. For 10 years
he was director of Veterans Services for Montgomery County, retiring due
to illness in 1995. Before that he was a warehouse manager with Ward Products,
a dispatcher at Preston Trucking in Albany and a supervisor in the transportation
department at Coleco Industries.
Mr. Walker was a member and served five terms as commander of the James
T. Bergan Post 39; a three-time county commander of the American Legion;
a life member of the Disabled American Veterans; a life member and former
commander of Post 55 Veterans of Foreign Wars; a former council commander
of Montgomery, Fulton and Schoharie counties; and a member of Knights of
Columbus Council 209.
He was a board member of the Amsterdam Zoning Board of Appeals and the
Montgomery County Office for the Aging.
Mr. Walker was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic
Church, a member of the Holy Name and St. Anthony's Societies; and also
served as treasurer.
He was a former member of the Full Gospel Businessmen Fellowship International.
Survivors include his wife, Rosalie Carbone Walker, whom he married
May 5, 1956; a son, James Walker of Ballston Spa; four daughters, Maria
Troskowski of East Nassau, Carol Lindley of Homer, N.Y., Loretta LaPorta
of Fort Johnson and Linda Givis of Johnstown; a sister, Jacqueline Tippery
of Kelso; 13 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the DeStefano Funeral
Home, Route 5S, and will be followed at 9:15 by a Mass of Christian Burial
at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
Burial will be with full military honors in St. Michael's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 this afternoon and 7 to 9 this evening
at the funeral home, during which the Holy Name/St. Anthony's societies
will conduct a service at 7:15.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church or to Hospice of Amsterdam.
Violet Elhilow
Violet T. Elhilow, 76, of Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, died Tuesday
afternoon at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in New York City, June 24, 1920, she was a daughter of Feelon
and Jamal Bellamah Elhilow. She came to Amsterdam as a child and was educated
here. Miss Elhilow was a graduate of the Kree Institute of Electrolysis
in New York City and was a self-employed electrologist in Amsterdam for
the past 34 years.
She was a communicant of St. Michael The Archangel Roman Catholic
Church and was a member of its former St. Rita's Sodality.
Survivors include one brother, Fred T. Hilow of Houston, Texas;
six nephews; three nieces, one aunt, one uncle, grandnieces and grandnephews
and several cousins.
Services are Friday at 8:30 a.m. at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11
Mohawk Place, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at the
Church of St. Michael The Archangel, Grove Street.
Interment is in St. Michael's Cemetery.
Calling hours are Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

John Torsone
John Guy Torsone, 82, of Poughkeepsie, died Tuesday at Eden Park
Nursing Home, Poughkeepsie.
Born in Amsterdam April 12, 1914, he was the son of Michael Torsone
and Theresa Coluni Torsone.
Mr. Torsone was a graduate of McAllister School of Embalming (now
known as the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service)
New York City, in June 1935.
He was owner and president of Michael Torsone Memorial Funeral
Home Inc.,Poughkeepsie and Highland, New York, licensed funeral director
since 1935. He worked right up until his illness four years ago.
He was a life member of the Italian Center; B.P.O.E. Elks No.
275 and Florentine Council 3rd. Degree Knights of Columbus and Honorary
Life Member of the Columbia, Dutchess, Putnam Funeral Directors Association
where he served two terms as president. He was also named to Funeral Directing
advisory board in Albany during his career.
He was the recipient of the Italian Center's Honorary Award for
dedicated service on April 25, 1992. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount
Carmel Church, the Dutchess Golf and Country Club, and the Fazool Club
all of Poughkeepsie. He was also a life member of Local 238 American Federation
of Musicians Union.
Survivors, including his wife, Antoinette Palmietto Torsone whom
he married Jan. 2, 1939, are four daughters, Sister Theresa Torsone S.S.N.D.,
Ridgewood, N.Y.; Michele Valentino of Dallas, Texas; Anita Freer of Highland,
N.Y., and Johnna Torsone of Eastchester, N.Y.; one son, Michael J. Torsone
of Poughkeepsie; seven grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 7 to
9 p.m. on Friday at the Michael Torsone Memorial Funeral Home Inc., 218
Mill St., Poughkeepsie. Friends will be received for a time of continued
fellowship and refreshment from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Italian Center
in Poughkeepsie.
Funeral services will be held at 9:15 a.m. Saturday at the Michael

of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:15 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Kathy Flander
Kathy Marie Flander, 47, of State Route 5, Fort Plain, died Tuesday
night at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, after a short illness.

& Smith Funeral Home Inc., 34 Center St., Fort Plain.
Antoinette DeRosa
Antoinette A. DeRosa, 80, of the Fulton County Infirmary, Johnstown,
formerly of Gloversville, died Tuesday at the infirmary where she was a
resident for the past four years.
Mrs. DeRosa was born in Fonda and moved to Gloversville in 1939.
She lived with her daughter before moving to the infirmary.
Mrs. DeRosa was a glovemaker at the former Perella Glove Co., retiring
in 1975.
She was a communicant of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church
and a member of its Rosary Society.
Her husband, Nicholas DeRosa whom she married July 22, 1939, died in
1975.
Survivors include a daughter, Antoinette "Toni" M. Ambrosino of Gloversville;
a brother, Thomas Casello of Ventura, Calif., a sister, Anna VanDenburgh
of Fonda; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A prayer service will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday at the John W. Finocan
Funeral Home, 13 Prospect Ave., followed at 9:30 at Saint Mary of Mount
Carmel Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
Spring burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 this afternoon and 7 to 9 this
evening at the funeral home.

Helen Sabattis
Mrs. Helen D. Sabattis, 89, formerly 34 Union Street, Broadalbin, died
Wednesday morning at the Palatine Nursing Home, after being a resident
for more than two years.
Born April 21 1907 in Broadalbin, she was the daughter Charles
H. and Alice Brown Deuel. Mrs. Sabattis was a lifelong resident of Broadalbin
and attended Broadalbin schools. She was also a graduate of Oneonta Normal
School, where she received a teacher's degree. She also attended St. Rose
College.
Mrs. Sabattis was employed as a school teacher for BOCES of Fulton
County. She was a member of the New York State Teachers Association, and
the Broadalbin Baptist Church of Broadalbin.
She married Everett A. Sabattis in 1929. He died in1965.
Mrs. Sabattis is survivied by a son, Everett D. Sabattis of East
Lake Ohio; a brother, Roger Deuel of Broadalbin, a sister, Alice J. Van
Kleeck of Broadalbin; four grandchildren; one great-grandson, nieces, nephews,
and cousins.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Union Mills
Cemetery in Broadalbin.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Baptist
Church of Broadalbin. Arrangements are under the direction of the Betz
Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.
Charlotte Longwell
Services were held Wednesday, Jan. 15, in the Beach-Tuyn Funeral Home
for Charlotte Bloom Longwell, 87, who died Jan. 12. A teacher in the Williamsville
and Clarence School District Adult Education programs for many years, she
and her husband Ernest, had lived in Williamsville since 1949.
Active in the Home Bureau for more than 40 years, she taught rug
braiding and rug hooking courses in adult ed classes.
Mrs. Longwell provided home health care for the elderly from the
50s through the 70s.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children,
Patricia Sherk of Salt Lake City, James B. of Amsterdam, and Lucinda Gray
of Eureka, Mo.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

David Flanagan
David Flanagan Jr., 22, of Graves Road, Galway, died Monday from
injuries sustained in an elevator accident in Troy.
Born in Schenectady, Mr. Flanagan was a graduate of Galway High
School.
He worked for the Simmons Elevator Company in Ballston Spa at
the time of his death.
Survivors include his parents, Ruth and David Flanagan Sr. of
Galway; two sisters, Karen and Lisa Flanagan, both of Galway; his maternal
grandmother, Marion McCarthy of Schenectady; his paternal grandmother,
Bronca Flanagan of Rick City Falls; and his maternal great-grandmother,
Betty Schmidt of Schenectady.
The service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Armer Funeral
Home, 39 E. High St., Ballston Spa.
Calling hours are from 1 p.m. until the service Thursday at the
funeral home.
Spring burial will be in Galway Cemetery.

Clara Romano
Clara Kohout Romano, 82, of Saratoga Road, Glenville, died Wednesday
at St. Clare's Hospital in Schenectady, after being stricken.
Born in Gloversville on April 24, 1914, she was the daughter of Frank
and Anna Kohout.
She attended Gloversville High School.
She married Peter F. Romano on July 3, 1948.
Mrs. Romano moved to Schenectady in 1951 and then to Syracuse, where
she and her husband lived in Mattydale, a suburb of Syracuse, from 1960
to 1983. She was employed by the General Electric Co. as an assembler from
1963 to 1975.
Mrs. Romano was a communicant of St. Margaret's Roman Catholic Church
in Mattydale at that time.
She moved back to Schenectady and lived in Glenville from 1984 to the
present.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years; two daughters, Leilani C.
Wright of Glenville and April C. Mulherin of Farmington, Maine; one brother,
Frank Kohout of Gloversville; one sister, Anna Patterson of Johnstown;
and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge
Road, followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at St. Helen's Church, Union
Street, Schenectady, with the time to be announced. Calling hours are Friday
evening from 7 to 9 in the Glenville Funeral Home.
Burial will be in the spring in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown.

Elvis Reynolds
Elvis Scott Reynolds, 18, of Mountain Road, Northville, died Wednesday
at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville after being stricken at home.
Born Dec. 17, 1978 in Gloversville, he was the son of Daniel and Nancy
Pike Reynolds.
He was a lifelong Gloversville resident and lived in Northville a short
time. He was educated in Gloversville schools.
Mr. Reynolds was employed as a dishwasher with the Crossroads Diner
in Gloversville until recently.
Other survivors including his parents, are a brother, Daniel O. Allen
of Gloversville, his maternal grandmother, Ruth Feight of Gloversville;
his companion whom he resided Stacey Reynolds of Northville; and several
cousins, aunts and uncles.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Walrath
& Bushouer Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville where services will be
conducted Friday at 10 a.m. with Captain Robert Ginter, commanding officer
of the Gloversville Salvation Army officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen
Cemetery in Fonda.
Gordon Hill Sr.
Gordon J. Hill Sr., 77, of Hill Road, Ephratah, died Wednesday at Nathan
Littauer Hospital after a long illness.
Born in Palatine, Mr. Hill was educated in Ephratah.
He was a self-employed farmer and for 38 years, was a bus driver for
the Greater Johnstown School District, retiring in 1985.
Mr. Hill was a member of the Ephratah Reformed Church.
He also was a former member of the Ephratah Volunteer Fire Department
and the Ephratah Rod and Gun Club.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Anderson Hill whom he married July
29, 1939; three daughters, Barbara Carpenter, Karen Berry, and Robin Borner,
all of Ephratah; his stepmother, Edna Hill of Ephratah; a sister, Hazel
Prall of Ephratah; four brothers, Fayette Heroth of Palatine, Raymond and
Donald Hill, both of Ephratah, and Arthur Hill of Rockwood; 12 grandchildren;
and 11 great-grandchildren.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home,
215 E. Main St., Johnstown.
Spring burial will be in Ephratah Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.
Kathy Flander
Kathy Marie Flander, 47, of State Highway 5, Fort Plain, died Tuesday
night at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, after a short illness.
Born in Little Falls on April 23, 1949, she graduated from St. Johnsville
High School and was studying intergeneration through Empire State College.
At the time of her death, she was the director for Meals for the Elderly
in Fort Plain for the last 10 years, where she developed the annual Thanksgiving
Day Dinner. Previously she worked at Little Falls Footwear in St. Johnsville
and was an Avon representative.
She was a lifelong area resident.
Ms. Flander was a member of the Fort Plain Reformed Church. She was
also a member of the Women's Guild at St. John's Reformed Church, St. Johnsville,
and also the Youth Group advisor of St. John's Church; a member of the
Snowbirds Snowmobiling Club at Crystal Lake; a 4-H leader for the Kringsbush
Beavers in Oppenheim, and also answered the annual Children's Christmas
Letters sponsored by the Fort Plain-Nelliston Chamber of Commerce. She
was actively involved in the Women's Fellowship of the Believers Fellowship
Center in Johnstown.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas J. Flander Jr., of Fonda and Patrick
D. Flander of Fort Plain; one daughter, Thomasine "Tammy" M. Flander of
Fort Plain; her father, William Van Gorder of St. Johnsville; her companion,
George Moore of Fort Plain; one granddaughter, Danielle F. Flander of Fonda.
Her mother, Ila Wright Moore died in 1984.
The funeral will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Gray-Houghtaling &
Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain.
Pastor Philip W.B. Carey officiated.
Spring burial will take place in West St. Johnsville Cemetery. Calling
hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Marion Rondeau
Marion A. Rondeau, 87, formerly of Whitehall, died Tuesday in Folts
Nursing Home in Herkimer after a long illness.
Born Sept. 12, 1909 in Burlington, Vt., she was the daughter of Joseph
and Anges Hamlin DeLorme.
She moved to Whitehall as a child, where she lived until 1973 and then
moved to Holiday Island in North Carolina. Seven years ago she came to
live with her daughter Beverly Newell of Amsterdam for three years, before
going to Folts Nursing Home in Herkimer.
Her husband, Fred Rondeau, died on April 22, 1986. She was also predeceased
by her daughter Agnes Mormino.
Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Newell of Amsterdam and Shirley
Maxwell of Fayetteville, N.C., one sister, Katherine Rushia of Schaghticoke,
and one brother Robert DeLorme of Pennsylvania; 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren,
five great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Jillson
Funeral Home Inc., 46 William St., Whitehall, followed by a Funeral Mass
at 11 a.m. at Notre Dame Des Victoires Church, Whitehall by the Rev. George
C. Gagnon, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in the spring in Our Lady of Angles Cemetery in Whitehall.
Calling hours are on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Nicholas DeMaria Sr.
Nicholas J. DeMaria Sr., 82, of State Route 30, Amsterdam, died unexpectedly
Wednesday morning at his winter residence in Brunswick, Ga.
Born on May 14, 1914 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Joseph and Lena
DeMaria. He was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. DeMaria owned and operated DeMaria Ready-Mix Concrete in Johnstown
for many years, retiring in 1980.
He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II, serving
in the European Theater where he received the Combat Infantry Medal.
He was a member of the Perth Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr. DeMaria was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in
Amsterdam.
He married the former Clara Thomas on Sept. 10, 1934. She died Nov.
3, 1996.
He is survived by a son, Nicholas J. DeMaria Jr. of Perth; a daughter,
Joanne Miller of Brunswick, Georgia; a brother, Dominick DeMaria of Saratoga
Springs; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces,
nephews, and cousins.
The funeral will be held Saturday morning at 8:15 at the Betz Funeral
Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian
Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 9:15 a.m.
The interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Fort Johnson. The family
will receive relatives and friends Friday evening from 6 to 8 at the funeral
home.
Contributions may be made in Mr. DeMaria's name to the Perth Volunteer
Fire Department in care of the funeral home.
Vada Dowen
Vada E. Dowen, 89, of Queensbury, died Wednesday at the Hallmark Nursing
Centre after a long illness.
Born in Alburg, Vt., Mrs. Dowen was educated in Amsterdam. She previously
lived in Saratoga Springs and Schenectady.
She was a seamstress for 15 years, and supervisor for the former Van-Raalte
Manufacturing of Saratoga Springs.
Mrs. Dowen was a former member of the Maple Avenue Fire Auxiliary of
Saratoga; president of American Legion Post 1005 Auxiliary, Schenectady;
and a former member of the Church of St. Peter, Saratoga Springs.
She was the widow of James Stewart Dowen.
Survivors include a son, John La-Tulippe of Duanesburg; four daughters,
Joyce Williams of Glenham, Janice Riddle of Halfmoon, Shirley Carey of
Eugene, Ore., and Lorraine LaCasse of Riverton, Conn.; 15 grandchildren;
24 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
A service will be held at 11 this morning at the Catricala Funeral Home,
1597 Route 9, Clifton Park, where calling hours will begin at 9 a.m.
Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, Schenectady.

Wasyl "William" Mykytiuk
Wasyl Mykytiuk, 74, of Oakland Avenue, Amsterdam, died Tuesday, Jan.
14, at home.
Born Nov. 10, 1922 in Ukraine, he received his education there.
His post-secondary education was pre-med in Czechoslovakia.
In 1949, Mr. Mykytiuk came to Amsterdam. He also resided in Mayfield,
and Northville before settling in Gloversville.
For more than 20 years, he was the manager of the Highland Motel and
Restaurant in Mayfield before retiring.
He was a member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Amsterdam.
Survivors include one nephew, Yaromyr Koropecky, Victoria, Brittish
Columbia, Canada; one niece, Lida Pluwak, Toronto, Canada; a grand-niece
Marta Choma, of Philadelphia, Penn.; and several other grand-nieces.
The funeral will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Jendrzejczak Funeral
Home, 200 Church St., and at 9 a.m. at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic
Church.
Interment will be in St. Nicholas Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.
Panachyda will be held at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made

Bessie LaMont
Mrs. Bessie LaMont, 95, formerly of 31 Lafayette St., Palatine, died
Wednesday at the Palatine Nursing Home where resided since November of
1996.
Born Oct. 8, 1901, in Lassesville, she was the daughter of Edward and
Mabel Williams Bronk. She educated in Lassesville, and lived most of life
in Palatine.
She was employed by Beechnut Nutrition Co. for more than 40 years and
at one time was a member and secretary for the Thursday Night Ladies Bowling
League at the Iroquois Lanes in Canajoharie.
She was also a member of Women of the Moose, Canajoharie Chapter 987,
and a member of St. John's -St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Canajoharie.
She was married to George LaMont for more than 50 years. He died in
1979.
She was predeceased by a son, Morty LaMont, who died in 1983.
Mrs. LaMont is survived by a brother, Edward Bronk, of Canajoharie;
four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews,
and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the St. John's-St.
Luke's Lutheran Church in Canajoharie, with the Rev. John Omans officiating.
Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
Calling hours are Saturday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lenz &
Betz Funeral Home 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie.
A Service by the Women of the Moose will be conducted that evening at
7 p.m.
