Mary Dlugas, 68, of Romeyn Avenue, Amsterdam, died Thursday morning at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital followinga short illness.

Born Aug. 29, 1928 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Vincent and Marianna La Porta Fiorillo. She was educated locally and was a lifelong resident.

She was the owner and operator of several local dining establishments, lastly the Grand Finale before retiring.

She was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church. 

Active in sports, she was the president and member of the Women's Commercial Bowling League. She was also a member of the Women's City and Four-Star Bowling Leagues. She served as secretary of the Amsterdam Women's Bowling Association. In 1983, she was inducted into the Amsterdam Bowlers Hall of Fame. An avid golfer, she was also a member of the Women's Golf League.

Survivors include two daughters, Sandy Yutes and Debbie Lansburg, both of Amsterdam; one sister, Louise Sisario, also of Amsterdam; seven grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Lory Dlugas in 1974.

Her brother, Aurelio "Bill" Fiorillo, died in 1996.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church St., with the Rev. Robert E. Doxey officiating. Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m.tonight at the funeral home.

Bessie LaMont
January 22, 1997

Mrs. Bessie LaMont, 95, formerly of 31 Lafayette St., Palatine, died Wedesday at the Palatine Nursing Home where resided since November of 1996.

Born Oct. 8 1901, in Lassellsville, N.Y., she was the daughter of Edward and Mabel Williams Bronk. She educated in Lassellsville, and lived most of life in Palatine.

She was employed by Beechnut Nutrition Company for more than 40 years and at one time a member and sectetary for the Thursday Night Ladies Bowling League at the Iroquois Lanes in Canajoharie.

She was also a member of Women of the Moose, Canajoharie Chapter 987, and a member of St. John's -St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Canajoharie.

She was married to George LaMont for more than 50 years. He died in 1979.

She was precedeased by a son, Morty Dornburg, who died in 1983.

Mrs. LaMont is survived by a brother, Edward Bronk, of Canajoharie; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the St. John's-St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Canajoharie, with the Rev. John Omans officiating.

Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.

Calling hours are Saturday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie.

A service by the Women of the Moose will be conducted that evening at 7 p.m.

Bessie Agnew
January 22, 1997

Mrs. Bessie Y. Agnew, 61, of Old Post Road, Ballston Spa, died Wednesday at Glens Falls Hospital after a short illness.

Mrs. Agnew was a lifelong Ballston Spa resident.

She was the deputy clerk and registrar for the Village of Ballston Spa for 25 years, retiring last year.

Mrs. Agnew was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.

She was also a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald Agnew; a daughter, Bambi Nichols of Ballston Spa; a son, Ronald Agnew of Perth; three brothers, Robert Lawrence of Ballston Spa, Jack Lawrence of Amsterdam, and Clifford Lawrence of Schuylerville; two sisters, Barbara Hodgson and Gail Burkey, both of Ballston Spa; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Armer Funeral Home, 39 E. High St.

There will be no calling hours.

Harry Stahl
January 22, 1997

Harry Stahl, 92, formerly of Gloversville, died Wednesday at Palatine Nursing Home after a long illness.

Born in Rockwood, Mr. Stahl was educated there and in Perth.

From 1934 to 1959, he worked at the former Broadalbin Knitting Company. Later, heworked at Mohawk Cabinet in Broadalbin, before retiring in 1969.

His first wife, Winifred Blanchard Stahl, whom he married June 7, 1926, died in 1965. His second wife, Eunice Bradley Stahl, whom he married Dec. 16, 1968, died in 1983.

Mr. Stahl is survived by his daughter, Joyce Frisch of Mayfield; two sons, Howard Stahl of Gloversville and Richard Stahl of Johnstown; 20 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home, 215 E. Main St., Johnstown, where a calling hour will begin at 10.

Spring burial will take place in Union Mills Cemetery, Broadalbin.

Marvin Herbst
January 22, 1997

Marvin W. Herbst of Northville, died Wednesday at home.

Born in Albany, Mr. Herbst was a lifelong Capital Region resident. During World War II, he served with the Army.

Mr. Herbst was a crane operator for 10 years, at McKinney Steel in Albany, retiring in 1974. Previously he worked for Ben Becker and Coil Wrecking. At one time, he was an electrician for the New York Central Railroad.

He was a member of the Wadsworth Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons; a life member of the McKownville Fire Department; and a former member of the Western Turnpike Rescue Squad.

Mr. Herbst was also a member of St.John's Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Zoe L. Herbst; two sons, William M. Herbst of Schenectady and David J. Herbst of Idaho Falls, Idaho; a daughter, Grace Tibbitts of Colonie; a sister, Marion Miller of Stony Creek; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at11 a.m. Monday at the Frederick Funeral Home, 16 Manning Square, Albany.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Josephine Paris
January 23, 1997

Mrs. Josephine Paris, 82, formerly of Harding Road, Amsterdam, died Thursday at the Florida Hospital in Orlando, Fla.

She was born June 17, 1914 in Cleveland, Ohio. She moved to the Amsterdam area in 1955. Mrs. Paris moved to Winter Park, Fla. in the spring of 1996 and resided at the Mayflower Retirement Community there.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Paris was a member of the Church of St. John the Baptist

Her husband, Ewin J. Paris, whom she married Dec. 29, 1945, died Nov. 17, 1994.

Survivors include two sons, Donald J. Paris of Branford, Conn., and Richard E. Paris, of Oviedo, Fla.; three grandsons, Timothy, Daniel and Christopher Paris.

Calling hours will be 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel, 13 Belmont Place.

Services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel.

Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Paris' memory to the Church of St. John the Baptist.
 

Thomas Cuozzo
January 25, 1997

Thomas Cuozzo, 64, of Kimball Street, died Saturday at St. Mary's Hospital following a long illness.

He was born in Brooklyn on Oct. 1, 1932, the son of Frank and Frances Hubert Cuozzo.

Mr. Cuozzo was educated in the New York City School System.

He was employed by Coleco Industries and was a commercial driver until retiring 17 years ago.

Mr. Cuozzo was a member of the John J. Wyszomirski American Legion Post 701 and the 40 & 8 Voiture Militaire 814, Montgomery County.

He served with the U.S. Army Central Command and was assigned as a driver for General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander. He was honorably discharged in 1952.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas Cuozzo of Sommerville, N.J., and Michael Cuozzo of Freehold, N.J.; six daughters, Susan Cannella of Easton, Pa., Theresa Cuozzo and Kathy Knapp, both of Englishtown, Pa., Tina Cuozzo, Angela Cuozzo and Michelle Cuozzo, all of Amsterdam; two brothers, Paul Cuozzo of Levittown, N.J., and Vincent Cuozzo of Omaha, Neb.; a sister, Frances Andrews of Davenport Center; five grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Riley Mortuary, 110 Division St., Amsterdam.

Services will be conducted 9:15 a.m. Tuesday at the mortuary with the Rev. Stanislaus J. Swierzowski, officiating.

Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam.

Mary Walkowiak
January 26, 1997

Mary S. Walkowiak, 87, of Hillcrest Spring Residential Adult Care, Upper Market Street, formerly of 32 Catherine St., Amsterdam, died Sunday morning at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 5, 1909 in Old Forge, Pa., she was the daughter of Peter and Mary Kochman Strzalka. She came to Amsterdam in 1913 and attended local schools.

Mrs. Walkowiak was employed as a spinner at Mohasco Industries for more than 40 years before retiring.

She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church and its Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Mohasco Quarter Century Club.

She married Chester Walkowiak on Sept. 5, 1936. He died April 10, 1951.

Mrs. Walkowiak is survived by a brother, Edward Strazalka, of Hartwick, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church. Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. 

Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. today, with recitation of the Rosary at 5:15 p.m. 

Memorial contributions may be made to GAVAC or to St. Stanislaus School.
 

Marion Calabrese
January 25, 1997

Mrs. Marion Calabrese, 83, formerly of Forest Hill Towers, Gloversville, died Saturday at Nathan Littauer Hospital.

Born in Fort Johnson, Mrs. Calabrese lived in the Gloversville area for the last 60 years.

She was employed at Ahearn's Drugstore in Johnstown and at Britts Department Store and most recently was a glove worker at Gates Mills Co.

Mrs. Calabrese was a member of the St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church Rosary Society, the Silhouette Card Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2077 Ladies Auxiliary, the Belles and Bell Chasers Group, the Johnstown Happy Singles Group, the Johnstown 50 Plus Senior Citizens group, the Ida McGinnis Senior Citizens and the Women of the Moose of Gloversville.

She attended the Lutheran Church School of Fort Johnson.

Her husband, John Calabrese, whom she married in November 1945, died April 28, 1961.

Survivors include four sisters, Helen Jones and Alice Knapik, both of Amsterdam; Barbara Gavitt of Stillwater and Elizabeth Pranys of Tribes Hill.

Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the John W. Finocan Funeral Home, 13 Prospect Ave., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 this afternoon and 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Burial will take place in the spring in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown.

Severina Coppola
January 25, 1997

Mrs. Severina DiGianni Coppola, 98, of North Ballston Avenue, Scotia, died Saturday at the Baptist Retirement Center after a long illness.

Born in Laviano, Italy, Mrs. Coppola came to this country when she was 13 years old. She lived in Amsterdam for a short time before moving to Schenectady, where she resided until moving to the retirement center last year.

Mrs. Coppola was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

She was married to Anthony F. Coppola Sr., until his death in 1976.

Survivors include a son, Anthony Coppola Jr. of Danbury, Conn.; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Church. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in Schenectady.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 this afternoon and 6:30 to 9 tonight at the Daly Funeral Home, 24 McClellan St., Schenectady.
 

John McAuliffe
January 26, 1997

John E. McAuliffe Sr., 53, of Blue Barns Road, Rexford, died Sunday at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady after a long illness.

Born in Niskayuna, Mr. Auliffe was a lifelong area resident.

He was the owner and operator of McAuliffe Trucking for 23 years and drove stock cars for many years at Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Rose Freitag McAuliffe; a daughter, Christine M. McAuliffe of Rexford; two sons, John E. McAuliffe Jr.of Ballston Lake and Edward J. McAuliffe of Broadalbin; a brother, Thomas McAuliffe of Scotia and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Townley & Wheeler Funeral Home, 21 Midline Road, Ballston Lake. Burial will be in Schenectady Memorial Park.
 

Lois Brosterand
January 25, 1997

Mrs. Lois H. Brosterand, 77, of Northerd Pines Trailer Park, Ballston Spa, died Saturday at Saratoga Hospital.

Born in Schenectady, Mrs. Brosterand was a graduate of Schoharie Central Schools. 

She had lived for 15 years at her present address. Before that, she was a resident of Scotia.

Mrs. Brosterand worked at the Glendale Nursing Home in Glenville as a nurse's aide until retiring in 1977.

Her husband, Carl "Vic" Brosterand, died in 1993.

Survivors include three daughters, Lois Fidiniger of Charlton, Gere Brosterand of Rotterdam and Joan Sutherland of Ballston Spa; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be private and burial will be in Sweetman Cemetery, Charlton. There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Wheeler Funeral Home.
 

Doris Case
January 26, 1997

Mrs. Doris Laning Case,75, of FonClair Street, Johnstown, died Sunday at home after a long illness.

Mrs. Case was born in Johnstown and attended Johnstown schools.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her husband, Orson Case, whom she married June 28, 1945; a daughter, Margaret E. Case of Gloversville; a son, Curtis A. Case of Campton, N.H.; two sisters, Maxine Stuk of Gloversville and Vivian Beirlein of Northville; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Lutheran Church, 1 W. Montgomery St. Burial will be in the spring.

Joan Martuscello
January 25, 1997

Joan Mae Martuscello, 62, of Windham, Conn., died Saturday in Windham Hospital.

Born Sept. 26, 1934 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Fred A. and Mary Mattei Martuscello.

She was a retired Affirmative Action officer for the state of Connecticut, at the Mansfield Training School. She was past president and founding member of the Puerto Rican Organizational Program, a past president of ACESS, and a member of the W.A.C.A.P. and past president of the Health Systems Agency.

Survivors include her husband, Frank Balestra of Windham, three sons, David S. Moran and Michael S. Moran both of Mansfield, Conn., and Buddy A. Rodriguez of Windham; two daughters, Becky J. Moran-Brime, and Kelli J. Moran-Wright, and eight grandchildren; 

Funeral services will be conducted at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday at the Bacon Funeral Home, 71 Prospect St., Willimantic, Conn. Burial will be in Amsterdam. 

Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
