Anthony Joseph Quackenbush Sr., 37, of Alligator Road, Florence, S.C.,
died Tuesday as a result of a shooting.
Born in Amsterdam on Feb. 24, 1960, he was the son of Jesse L. Quackenbush
and Deanna P. Pellegrini. He was educated at the Canajoharie High School.
Mr. Quackenbush was a self-employed painting contractor for many years.
He lived in Florence, S.C., for six years. He previously lived in Florida
and also Canajoharie.
He was of the Catholic faith.
He married Rhonda Renée Smith on Feb. 23, 1979 in St. Petersburg,
Fla.
Other survivors including his wife, are one son, Alexander J. Quackenbush
of Florence, S.C.; five daughters, Elizabeth D., Kristen M., Stacey L.,
Jessica L., and Stephanie R. Quackenbush, all of Florence, S.C.; his parents,
Jesse L. Quackenbush of Palatine Bridge, and Deanna Pellegrini DeWitt of
Fort Plain; three brothers, Jesse L. Quackenbush of Amarillo, Texas, Christopher
J. Quackenbush of Fort Plain, Thomas L. Quackenbush of Fort Plain; one
sister, Andrea L. Quackenbush of Fort Plain; and several nieces, nephews,
aunts and uncles.
Calling hours will be 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Houghtaling & Smith
Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie.
Funeral services will be conducted 9 a.m. Monday at the chapel of funeral
home and at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, Reid Street, Fort Plain,
where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Father Kenneth Swain
will officiate.
Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the
Quackenbush Children Trust Fund, in care of Central National Bank, 41 Canal
St., Fort Plain, 13339 or any other branch of Central National.
Anthony Quackenbush Jr.
Anthony Joseph "T.J." Quackenbush Jr., 14, of Alligator Road, Florence,
S.C., died Tuesday at Carolina's Hospital System, Florence, S.C., as a
result of a shooting.
Born in Nashville, Tenn., on March 3, 1983, he was the son of Anthony
J. Quackenbush Sr. and Rhonda Renée Smith. He was currently in the
seventh grade at Sneed Middle School in Florence, S.C.
He occasionally assisted his father in the painting business.
He was of the Catholic faith.
He played in the Florence Little League.
Survivors include his mother, Rhonda Renée Quackenbush of Florence,
S.C., one brother, Alexander J. Quackenbush; five sisters, Elizabeth D.,
Kristen M., Stacey L., Jessica L., and Stephanie R. Quackenbush, all of
Florence, S.C.; his maternal grandparents, William and Debbie Smith of
Lake Panasoffkee, Fla.; his paternal grandparent, Deanne Pellegrini DeWitt
of Fort Plain; Jesse Quackenbush and Debra Quackenbush of Palatine Bridge;
and his maternal great-grandparents, Theodore and Emma Furman of Keystone,
Fla.

Rodney Bell
Rodney Linton Bell Jr., 76, of Gonzales, Texas, died April 9 at his
residence.
Born on Dec. 3, 1920 in Paris, Ill., he was a graduate of the University
of Illinois with a degree in civil engineering. He served in the U.S. Navy
in World War II, retiring in 1956 at the rank of commander.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Priscill Mann Bell of Gonzales; two
sons, Rodney Linton Bell III of Portland, Ore., and Richard W. Bell of
Dallas, Texas; his daughter, Dr. Priscilla J. Bell of Gloversville, his
foster daughter, Linda Miller of Vollentine, Texas; a sister, Barbara Bercaw
of West York, Ill.
Funeral services will be conducted today at the Presbyterian Church
of Gonzales at 2 p.m.
Graveside services and burial will be conducted Tuesday at the Bradbury
Cemetery in West York, Ill.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, Gonzales
Warm Springs Hospital,or the Presbyterian Church of Gonzales.

Lottie Valberg
Lottie (Braun) Valberg, wife of the late Samuel Valberg, a resident
of Amsterdam, from 1933 to 1976, died April 6 in Deerfield Beach, Fla.
Mrs. Valberg was born on a farm near Nassau, outside of Albany, in November
1907. She was the daughter of Frank and Eva Braun. She moved to Albany
in her high school years, where she attended Albany High School. She earned
a degree in music from LaSalle College.
Mrs. Valberg taught piano in the Albany area in the late 1920s and 30s.
In 1931-32 she achieved local popularity singing as the "Melody Maid" over
WOKO in Albany.
She married Samuel Valberg of Amsterdam in 1933.
She was a member of the Sisterhood of the Sons of Israel, Haddasah and
PTA; she also created a choir at the Sons of Israel Congregation and was
an active member of other musical organizations.
In 1976 she and her husband moved to Deerfield Beach, Fla., where in
her later years she published two collections of humorous stories and reminiscences.
Survivors include three sons, Jerry, Eugene and Mark; and four grandchildren.

Edward Bryk
Mr. Edward S. Bryk, 67, of Northern Boulevard died Friday. He was born
August 24, 1929 in Amsterdam, New York, a son of the late Michael and Catherine
Silka Bryk. He attended local schools and was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch
High School.
Mr. Bryk was the owner of Mohawk Valley Plumbing & Heating of Amsterdam.
He was a member of St. Stanislaus Church.
Mr. Bryk also was a member of the Reid Hill Fish & Game Club.
Survivors include a son, Don Bryk of Amsterdam; two daughters, Carolyn
Bryk and Jo Ann Brown, both of Florida; a sister, Mary Niemczyk of Amsterdam;
a grandson, A.J. Bryk of Amsterdam; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
There will be no calling hours.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Monday at St.
Stanislaus Church.
Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Amsterdam,
the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps or St. Stanislaus Church.

Barbara Schwartz
Barbara Jane Schwartz, 75, formerly of Amsterdam, died Saturday at Nathan
Littauer Hospital in Gloversville. Mrs. Schwartz had been a resident of
Pineview Commons, Johnstown, and a patient at the Fulton County Infirmary
since August.
Born Feb. 14, 1922 in Amsterdam, she was a daughter of Arthur F. and
Isabel Kelley Radley. She was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School.
Mrs. Schwartz had been a self-employed beautician in Amsterdam for many
years. She was a member of St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Amsterdam
and its Faithful Followers Bible Class. She had also been a member of the
Goodwill Club.
Survivors include a son, Alan W. Schwartz of Tempe, Ariz.; a daughter,
Linda R. McGee of Youngtown, Ariz.; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren
and several cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Johnson-Lindsay
Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam, with the Rev. Robert E. Doxey
officiating. Interment is in Hagaman Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Robert Becker
Robert H. Becker, 74, of Vero Beach, Fla., died Saturday at Sebastian
Hospital, Sebastian, Fla., after a long illness.
Born Sept. 19, 1922 in Canajoharie, he was the son of Ralph Becker and
Gula Hoffman. He graduated from the Utica city schools.
Mr. Becker was the owner and operator of Bob's Tool Sharpening Services
in Vero Beach.
He lived in Florida for more than 20 years.
Mr. Becker was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.
He served in China, India, and the Burma Campaign.
He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include two sisters, Elizabeth Traudt of Canajoharie and Janet
Spagnuola of Johnstown; a brother, Raymond E. Becker of Johnstown; and
several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Private graveside services will be conducted at the convenience of the
family at Canajoharie Falls Cemetery with the Rev. Wayne Cole officiating.
Burial will be in Canajoharie Falls Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Houghtaling & Smith
Funeral Home, Canajoharie.

Ruth Hults
Ruth Putnam Hults of Gloversville died Sunday at the Eastern Star Home
in Oriskany after a long illness.
Born in Rome, she was the daughter of Edward and Jennie Durey Putnam.
She was a resident of Gloversville most of her life, and lived at the
Eastern Star Home since June of 1994.
She was a graduate of both Gloversville High School and the New York
State University at Albany.
Ms. Hults was employed for 29 years as a business teacher and also an
English teacher at the Johnstown High School and the Gloversville High
School, where she retired in 1973.
She was a member of the North Main Street United Methodist Church in
Gloversville; Cayadutta Chapter No. 166 Order of the Eastern Star, Gloversville;
Gloversville Business and Professional Womens Association; American Association
of University Women; Fulton County and New York State Retired Teachers'
Association and the Gloversville YWCA.
Survivors include a son, Robert J. Hults of Waterloo.
There will be no calling hours. An Eastern Star Ritual and a funeral
service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Walrath & Bushouer
Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, with the Rev. Steven Clunn
officiating. Burial will be at Johnstown Cemetery.

Elizabeth Hall
Mrs. Elizabeth C. Chapman Hall, 68, of 36 Evelyn Ave., Amsterdam, died
Sunday morning at her home.
Born Dec. 20, 1928 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth
Droege Chapman.
Mrs. Hall was a lifelong resident and was a 1946 graduate of Wilbur
H. Lynch High School and was also a graduate of the University of Rochester
with a bachelor of arts degree in accounting. Mrs. Hall was a homemaker
and was a treasurer of the Sarah Jane Sanford Home for Women in Amsterdam
for 10 years.
Mrs. Hall was a member of the Amsterdam Municipal Golf Course for many
years and played in the Ladies League and the Couples League.
She was a lifetime member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church,
Amsterdam, and served for many years as Sunday School teacher; played the
piano and organ, directed the Junior Choir and sang with the Senior Choir.
She was a member of the Church Council and held the position of treasurer
for a number of years. Mrs. Hall was also a member of the Heralders Circle
of the church.
She married Henry F. Hall on Sept. 4, 1954.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Clifford C. Hall
of Glenville; a brother, Ralph Chapman of Amsterdam; a sister, Jean Cowing
of Chico, Calif., two grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mrs. Hall was predeceased by a daughter, Susan Elizabeth Hall, who died
in 1955.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Trinity
Evangelical Lutheran Church, Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, with the Rev.
William E. Siiss officiating. Burial will take place at the Pine Grove
Cemetery in Tribes Hill.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Betz Funeral Home Inc.,
171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam. The Heralders Circle of the Church will meet
at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran
Church or to the Hospice of Amsterdam or to the Leukemia Society of America
in care of the funeral home.
Stephen Jackson
Stephen E. Jackson, 83, of the Arkell Center Apartments, Canajoharie,
died Sunday at his home.
Born April 22, 1913 in Sharon Springs, he was the son of George L. Jackson
and Anna Reagen. He graduated from the Sharon Springs schools.
He was employed at Beech-Nut in Canajoharie for 31 years retiring in
1976.
He lived in Canajoharie for 55 years.He previously lived in Sharon Springs.
Mr. Jackson was a veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant with
the U.S. Army and was with the Airborne 221st Medical Co.
He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Canajoharie.
He was also a member of the VFW Post 3275 of Fort Plain; a member of
the Smith-Schultz Post 222 American Legion of Canajoharie and a member
of the Last Man's Club of Canajoharie.
He married Mary Rose on Oct. 27, 1939 in Canajoharie. She died March
18, 1979.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Ruth Jackson of Sharon Springs,
and several nieces and nephews.
A prayer service will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Houghtaling
& Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, and at 10 a.m. at
Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Cliff Street, where a Mass of Christian
Burial will be celebrated with the Rev. William Gaffigan officiating. Burial
will be in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery at a later date.
Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral
home.

Peter Aldi
Peter J. Aldi, 83, of Montgomery Street, Gloversville, died Saturday
at the Nathan Littauer Nursing Facility after a long illness.
Born Dec. 31, 1919 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Angelo and Maria
Agosta Aldi. He attended Amsterdam schools.
Mr. Aldi had lived in Gloversville since 1949.
He was employed as a glove worker for the former Mario Papa & Sons
Glove Co., retiring in 1976.
Mr. Aldi was also in the Green Thumb Program associated with the Nathan
Littauer Nursing Facility.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church and the Ida McGinnis Senior
Citizens.
He married Olympia V. Aldi on Aug. 17, 1940.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Peter R. Aldi of
Gloversville and Larry A. Aldi of Belmont, Calif., a daughter, Linda Sidoti
of Valatie; five grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Tuesday at John W. Finocan
Funeral Home, 13 Prospect Ave., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial
at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral
home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital
in care of the funeral home.
Philip Ferrara
Philip D. Ferrara, 58, of 288 N. Main St., Gloversville, died Saturday
at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville.
Born May 15, 1938 in Gloversville, he was the son of Philip D. and Marion
Johnson Ferrara. He was a lifelong Gloversville resident.
Mr. Ferrara was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving in Morocco from
1955 to 1959.
He was the owner and operator of Philip's Beauty Lounge on Third Street
in Gloversville for 25 years, and for the past 10 years, Sessions Hair
and Body Spa of North Main Street until his death.
Mr. Ferrara was a member of the Sacred Heart Church of Gloversville
and a former member of the Fulton County and Gloversville Republican Clubs,
the Gloversville Zoning Board of Appeals, and the Fulton County Planning
Board. He was past president of the Fulton County Hairdressers Association
Affiliate No. 20.
He married Judith M. Handy on Aug. 18, 1963.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, John P. Ferrara
of Seoul, South Korea, and Philip J. Ferrara of Las Vegas; a sister, Marion
Ferrara of Gloversville; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and
cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at
the Sacred Heart Church with the Rev. Thomas J. Boyle, administrator, as
celebrant. Burial will be in Fern Dale Cemetery, Johnstown.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Walrath
& Bushouer Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville.
