Former Superintendent of Schools in the Greater Amsterdam School District,
Thomas F. Caton Jr., 68, of Sawyer Road, Sherburne, died Wednesday at Chenango
Memorial Hospital in Norwich.
Born May 5, 1928 in Oswego, he was the son of Thomas F. and Anna Mae
Mulvihill Caton.
He had been a resident of Sherburne for the last year.
Mr. Caton had been an educator for more than 40 years. He started his
profession as a teacher in the Liverpool School District. He also was a
principal and assistant superintendent there. He was also superintendent
in the Mount Markum School District in West Winfield, the Greater Amsterdam
School District and the Union Free School District in Tarrytown, retiring
in 1981. After his retirement, Mr. Caton was a telecommunications consultant.
He married Sarah Gorman Caton on April 14, 1952 in Oswego.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Michael T. of Earlville,
Thomas J., of Onalaska, Wis.; three daughters, Kathleen Carey and Mary
Jo Rose, both of Earlville and Carol J. Caton of Niskayuna; three sisters,
Clara Schaffer of Rochester, Patricia Vezelis of Hilton and Jean M. Caton
of Rochester; nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 9:15 a.m. Saturday at the Burgess
Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of
Christian burial at St. Mary's Church in Hamilton. Burial will be at the
convenience of the family.
Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Stanley De Julius
Stanley J. De Julius, 54, of Bullshead Road, Amsterdam, died Tuesday
at St. Mary's Hospital following a long illness.
Mr. De Julius was born July 10, 1942, in Amsterdam and attended local
schools. He was a lifelong city resident.
He was employed for 29 years by Longview Fibre Co. before retiring due
to illness in 1996.
He was a member of St. Stanislaus Church.
Mr. De Julius was also a member of the Cranesville Volunteer Fire Department
and Local 757 Graphic Communications International.
He was married to Janice Bartman De Julius.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a sister, an aunt, nieces
and cousins.
Funeral services were conducted this morning
Interment was in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

John Mlecz
John Robert Mlecz Sr., 64, of Palm Beach, Fla., and Richfield Springs,
died Monday in Palm Beach, Fla.
Born Sept. 28, 1932 in Amsterdam, he was a son of the late John and
Bessie Ziemba Mlecz. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean
War.
In 1973 he purchased the Petrified Creatures Museum of Natural History
in Richfield Springs. He was a member of the Richfield Chamber of Commerce.
He married Stella Carolina Gluszak on June 9, 1956.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, John Robert Mlecz
Jr. of Richfield Springs, Ritchie S. Mlecz of the Bronx; a daughter, Sally
Ellen Kennedy; and five grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in
St. Joseph's Church in Richfield Springs. Interment will follow in St.
Joseph's Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9
p.m. Friday at the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 5 W. James St., Richfield
Springs.
Memorial contributions may be made to the non-profit organization of

Bernard Majewski
Bernard Majewski, 88, of Jersey Hill Road, Amsterdam, died Wednesday
evening at St. Mary's Hospital.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Jendrzejczak
Funeral Home, 200 Church St., Amsterdam.
Charles Ten Eyck
Charles Ten Eyck Jr., 79, of Route 10A, Johnstown, died Tuesday at home.
A lifelong Johnstown resident, Mr. Ten Eyck was a graduate of Johnstown
High School and Morrisville Agricultural and Technical College.
He was a watchmaker for the family business, Ten Eyck Jeweler, until
retiring.
Survivors include a brother, Yale Ten Eyck of Johnstown.
A graveside service will conducted be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda,
at a later date.
There will be no calling hours.
Arrangements are by Cole Funeral Home.
Alta Mulvey
Miss Alta Elizabeth "Betty" Mulvey, 78, formerly of Trackside Homes,
Johnstown, died Wednesday at Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home after
a long illness.
Born in Johnstown, Miss Mulvey attended St. Patrick's School.
She worked at Remington Rand in Ilion, and later for the former MCA
in Gloversville, from which she retired.
Miss Mulvey was a communicant of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be private. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing
Home.

Helen Dyer
Mrs. Helen Pawlowski Dyer, 76, of St. Anna Drive, Rotterdam, died Wednesday
at St. Clare's Hospital in Schenectady after a long illness.
Born in Niskayuna, Mrs. Dyer was a graduate of Nott Terrace High School
in Schenectady.
She was a member of St. Gabriel's Church.
Her husband, Raymond J. Dyer Sr., died in 1982.
Survivors include three sons, Raymond J. Dyer Jr. of Middle Grove, James
P. Dyer of Amsterdam, and John R. Dyer of Rotterdam; two daughters, Barbara
Nikolaidis and Paula Ressell both of Rotterdam; a sister, Elizabeth Meyers
of Schenectady; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:15 a.m. Saturday at the Daly
Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St., Schenectady, and at 9 a.m. at St. Gabriel's
Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will
be in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Bernard Majewski
Well-known author and social observer Bernard S. Majewski, 88, of Jersey
Hill Road, Amsterdam, died Wednesday evening at St. Mary's Hospital following
a short illness.
Born Nov. 6, 1908 in Fultonville, he was a son of the late Frank and
Aniela Anaczkowski Majewski. He attended local schools and was a lifelong
area resident.
At one time, he worked for the Mohawk Carpet Co. For many years, Mr.
Majewski owned and operated a dairy farm on Jersey Hill Road. In his retirement,
he was a frequent contributor to The Recorder and other local publications.
He operated Country Treasure Donuts. He also raised rabbits and developed
the "Chinook" breed. He regularly published a newsletter titled "Farm &
Home Fireside."
Mr. Majewski was a member of St. Stanislaus Church and its Holy Name
Society.
He married Edna Hincman Majewski on Nov. 26, 1936.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Joan Orzolek
of Ballston Lake, and Barbara Mulyca of Rotterdam; a sister, Lillian Beatty
of Amsterdam, and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Jendrzejczak
Funeral Home, 200 Church St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at
9 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church. Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Mary Zaklukiewicz
Mary J. Zaklukiewicz, 89, of Van Derveer Street, Amsterdam, died Wednesday
evening at St. Mary's Hospital where she had been a patient for a day.
Born Feb. 14, 1908 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Joseph and
Bernice Stepien Halgas and was educated in local schools. She was a lifelong
resident of Amsterdam.
Mrs. Zaklukiewicz was employed at one time as a setter at the former
Bigelow Sanford Carpet Mills in Amsterdam. She later worked at the former
Consolidated Novelty as an assembler and then as a foreman. She retired
in 1975.
Mrs. Zaklukiewicz was a volunteer with the American Red Cross, based
in Amsterdam.
She was a communicant of the Church of St. John the Baptist and was
a 66-year member of its Ladies Rosary Society. She was a member of the
St. John's Seniors. She was an honorary member of the Polonaise Society
and a member of the Club 60 at St. Mary's Hospital.
She married Edward W. Zaklukiewicz on Sept. 5, 1931. He died Nov. 11,
1964.
Survivors include two sons, Richard E. Zaklukiewicz of Little Falls
and Gerald A. Zaklukiewicz of Amsterdam; a daughter, Theresa M. Guzielek
of Johnstown; two sisters, Monica Cichy and Eleanor Swierzowski both of
Amsterdam; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces,
nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Riley
Mortuary, 110 Division St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10
a.m. at the Church of St. John the Baptist, Van Derveer Street. Interment
will be in the St. John's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Grace Foss
Grace L. Foss, 96, of Wells Nursing Home, Johnstown, died Thursday after
a long illness.
Born Jan. 3, 1901 in Broadalbin, she was the daughter of George and
Marion Sawyer Lasher.
She resided in Amsterdam for several years and mostly lived in Canajoharie
and Broadalbin, before entering the nursing home eight years ago.
She was a graduate of Broadalbin High School and attended the Gloversville
Business School.
Mrs. Foss was employed at Beech-Nut Nutrition Corp. in Canajoharie for
about 20 years, then she was a clerk with Holzheimer & Shaul in Amsterdam
for 20 years.
She was a member of Canajoharie Reformed Church.
She was a former member of the Broadalbin Chapter of the Order of the
Eastern Star and the Canajoharie American Legion Auxiliary.
She married Fred Foss in 1920. He died in 1967.
Survivors include a son, John R. Foss of Johnstown; five grandchildren;
and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Fred G. Foss.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Jeffords
Chapel, 85 West Main St., Broadalbin, with the Rev. Kathy Jo Blaske, guest
pastor of the Canajoharie Reformed Church, officiating. Burial will be
at Broadalbin Union Rural Cemetery in Broadalbin.
Calling hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Duane Strong
H. Duane Strong Jr., 71, of Union Street, Cobleskill, died Tuesday at
his home.
Born in Oneonta, Mr. Strong lived in Cobleskill for the past 47 years.
He was a graduate of the State University of Oneonta College, where he
received his bachelor's and master's degrees.
Mr. Strong was a social studies teacher at Cobleskill Central School
until retiring in 1985. He later volunteered his time to the Otschodela
Boy Scouts Council, the Salvation Army and the Community Hospital of Schoharie
County.
He was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association,
American Legion Pot 1688 in Laurens, Cobleskill Restoration and Development,
Cobleskill Historical Society, Schoharie County Historical Society, Better
Breathers, SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association, American Association of Retired
Persons, Schoharie Arts Council and Strong Family Association of America.
Mr. Strong was honored in 1989 with the Outstanding Community Service
Award by the Schoharie County Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. In 1990,
Mr. Strong received the Outstanding Community Service Award by SUNY Cobleskill.
He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Cobleskill Historical
Society in 1994.
Mr. Strong was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a member of the Laurens Presbyterian Church.
His wife, Marjorie Riggs Strong, died in 1984.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Leland Strong of Hollywood, Fla.,
and James Duane Strong of Mechanicville; a brother, Robert Strong of Wolcott;
a grandson and a great-grandson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Robert
A. Guffin Funeral Home, 1 Chapel St. Burial will be in the Laurens Rural
Cemetery in Laurens.

Ralph Spencer
Ralph F. Spencer, 82, of West Pine Street, Gloversville, died Thursday
afternoon at the Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Facility after a long
illness.
Born Oct. 7, 1914, he was the son of Christopher and Clementina D'Errico.
He was educated in Gloversville. Mr. Spencer worked at the former Blodgett
Tailoring and Dry Cleaners for many years.
He became head custodian for the Gloversville Enlarged School District
in 1974 and retired in 1984.
Mr. Spencer was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific.
He was a member of Catholic War Veterans Post 642 and worked at the
post's Tuesday night bingo games.
Mr. Spencer was a member of A.O.E.F. Foresters Club and West River Hunting
Club.
He was a communicant of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church.
He married Betsey Whipple Spencer on Jan. 26, 1946.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Damien Keier of Gloversville;
a daughter, Gina Spencer Leichenauer of Gloversville; a brother, Peter
Spencer of Cheshire, Conn.; three sisters, Sophie Celantano of Hollywood,
Fla., Patricia Trippodo of Gloversville and Mary Campochiro of Amsterdam;
and four grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Amico Funeral
Home, 150 S. Main St., and at 9:30 at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church,
where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Cremation will follow
at the Leatherstocking Crematory, Cherry Valley.
Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. The Catholic
War Veterans Post will conduct a ritual at 7 p.m.
