Florence Graves Templeton, 95, of Fairmont Avenue, Amsterdam, died Thursday
at Montgomery Meadows.
Mrs. Templeton was born Dec. 18, 1901, in Piercefield, the daughter
of Wilson B. and Gertrude Coggin Graves. She graduated from Piercefield
High School in 1921 and from the Potsdam Normal School in 1923.
She taught school in Johnstown for two years and in Conifer, St. Lawrence
County, for one year before moving to Amsterdam, where she became a primary
teacher in the fall of 1926.
Mrs. Templeton taught in Bellingham, Wash., as an exchange teacher from
the Amsterdam public schools in 1929, arranged by Superintendent Wilbur
H. Lynch. She returned to Amsterdam in 1930 and taught in the Academy Street
School, New East Main Street School and Guy Park School.
Mrs. Templeton was a charter member of the Mohawk Valley Chorus, a life
member of the Amsterdam-Parent Teachers Association, and a member of the
Century Club, Amsterdam Memorial Hospital Women's Auxiliary and the Mohawk
Valley Heritage Association.
She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Amsterdam.
Her husband, Hugh Thomas Templeton, whom she married Nov. 23, 1938,
died in 1980.
Survivors include a nephew, Wilson L. Graves of Niagara Falls; and two
nieces, Virginia Progelhof of Seabrook, Texas, and Emma Greenwood of Rochester.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Presbyterian Church of
Amsterdam, 25 Church St., with the Rev. Dan J. Wheeler officiating.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the United Presbyterian Church
of Amsterdam.
Arrangements are by the Johnson-Lindsay Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place,
Amsterdam.
Jayne Dantini
Jayne Marie Dantini, 70, of 24 Essex St., Amsterdam, died Saturday at
her home
Born Jan. 25, 1927 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Archimede ("Archie")
and Maria Marinelli Quattrocchi. She was a lifelong area resident.
After graduating from Amsterdam High School in 1945, Mrs. Dantini served
as the administrator to the commander of the Naval Depot in Scotia, N.Y.,
resigning her post in 1953 to raise a family.
She was an active member of the Amsterdam Community serving as past
commander of the Disabled America Veterans Auxiliary, the Mt. Carmel Christian
Women's Society, Senior Citizens, and was a communicant of Our Lady of
Mt. Carmel Church.
Survivors include her husband Richard J. Dantini, whom she married in
1947; two sons, Bill Dantini of Raleigh, N.C., and Mark Dantini of the
town of Milton; two brothers, Emil and Herman Quattrocchi of Amsterdam;
three sisters, Celia Iannuzzi and Vera Baranello of Amsterdam, and Anna
Battisti of St. Johnsville; a daughter-in-law, Laura Zeiter Dantini of
Raleigh, N.C.; three grandchildren, Rick, Ross and Jocelyn.
Mrs. Dantini was predeceased by sisters Ida Russell and Inez DiMezza
Moore, and a brother Alexander Quattrocchi, all of Amsterdam.
Calling hours will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the De Stefano Funeral
Home, Route 5S, Amsterdam.
Funeral services will be conducted 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of
Mt. Carmel Church. The Catholic service will be concelebrated by the Rev.
Lawrence Decker of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel parish in Amsterdam.
Burial will immediately follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Amsterdam.
Flowers are acceptable or memorial contributions may be made to the
American Cancer Society.
Ernest Hoffman
Ernest H. Hoffman , 88, of County Route 197, Johnstown, died in the
Wells Nursing Home Friday after a long illness
Born Oct. 5, 1908 in Saratoga Springs, he is the son of August and Mary
Hoffman and came to Johnstown in 1951.
Mr. Hoffman was an operating engineer and worked out of the Albany Local
for various local construction companies.
On Feb. 2, 1952 he married Leona M. Jackson. She died Sept. 29, 1996.
Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Saltsman of Fort Plain; two sons,
E. William Hoffman of South Hill, Va. and James Hoffman of Fonda; nine
grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 10 a.m. to noon Monday prior to a service at
12 p.m. from the A.G. Cole Funeral Home, 215 E. Main St., Johnstown.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Fonda.
Marion McGuire
Marion McGuire, 81, of South Country Ridge Drive, died Saturday at Mt.
Loretto Nursing Home.
Arrangements will be announced by the Riley Mortuary Inc.
Anthony Marotta
Anthony R. Marotta, 76, of Edson Street, Amsterdam, died Friday evening
at St. Mary's Hospital after being stricken earlier in the day.
Born July 9, 1921 in Amsterdam, a son of the late Pasquale and Concetta
Marotta. He was educated locally and was a graduate of the former Wilbur
H. Lynch High School class of 1939. He was a lifelong area resident.
During World War II, Mr. Marotta served in the U.S. Army and was stationed
in the Phillipines.
For several years, he was associated with the family business known
as the Lyon Street Grill. Later, he was a foreman at Lamatronics. He also
was a weaver at Mohasco Industries and as a member of the security team
closed its gates for the last time.
He was first married to Dorothy Junne, now living in Seal Beach, Calif.
Survivors include his wife Clemencia Rojas Marotta, whom he married
in 1972; a son, John J. Marotta, Minnetonka, Minn.; three grandchildren,
Gia Marotta, John Anthony Marotta and Anthony Joseph Marotta, all of Minnetonka,
Minn.; a brother, Joseph Marotta, of Long Branch, N.J.; two sisters, Mary
Harrington of Little Falls and Margaret Moore of Florida; and several nieces,
nephews and cousins.
There will be no calling hours.
A memorial service will be conducted 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Jendrzejczak
Funeral Home, 200 Church St., Amsterdam.
Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, Amsterdam.
Jo Ann Dillon
Mrs. Jo Ann Dillon, 62, of Frederick Street, Amsterdam, died Friday
afternoon at St. Mary's Hospital.
Born Aug. 15, 1935, in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Joseph and
Amelia Krygowski Tokarczyk.
Mrs. Dillon, a lifelong resident of Amsterdam, graduated from the former
Wilbur H. Lynch High School and was valedictorian of the class of 1953.
She worked for the Amsterdam Federal Savings and Loan Bank for 40 years
and was a former vice president of the bank before retiring in 1992.
Mrs. Dillon was a member of the Good Shepherd Polish National Catholic
Church and was its organist at one time.
Survivors include her husband, John E. Dillon, whom she married April
8, 1956; two daughters, Susan Tiemann, of Glenville, and Jeanette Harris,
of Amsterdam; her mother, Amelia Tokarczyk of Amsterdam; one brother, Joseph
Tokarczyk, of Hagaman; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Jendrzejczak Funeral
Home, 200 Church St., Amsterdam
Services will be conducted 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and
at 9 a.m. at the Good Shepherd Polish National Catholic Church.
Burial will be in the Good Shepherd Cemetery.

Grace Rooks
Mrs. Grace Graff Rooks, 76, of Fort Hunter, formerly of Jamesville,
died Wednesday after a long struggle with cancer.
Born Feb. 10, 1919 in Hagaman, she made her home in Jamesville, where
she worked for General Electric for 25 years.
After her retirement, she devoted herself to her family and helped to
raise her grandchildren. She volunteered at Community General Hospital
in Syracuse and at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
Mrs. Rooks was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Tribes Hill.
Survivors include two sisters, Marion Persons of Fort Hunter and Genevieve
Lasko of LaBelle, Fla; six children: Mark Rooks of Wilmington, Mary Rose
of Syracuse, Catherine Hill of Cropseyville, Martha Rooks of
West Boylston, Mass., Michael Rooks of Ithaca, Joan Mietz of Cazenovia,
13 grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart
Church in Tribes Hill.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Sacred Heart Church.
Robert Hovemeyer
Robert Hovemeyer, 68, of the Stratton Apartments, Division Street, Amsterdam,
died this morning at St. Mary's Hospital.
Arrangements, by the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, are incomplete
and will be announced.
Frances Muir
Frances M. Muir, 89, of West Grand Street, Palatine Bridge, died Monday
at the Mount Loretto Nursing Home after a long illness.
She was born Sept. 15, 1908, in Philadelphia, the daughter of William
and Mary Smith Murphy. She was a graduate of Merion Mercy Academy and Chestnut
Hill College, both in Philadelphia.
Mrs. Muir lived in Jenkintown, Pa., and was a resident of Palatine Bridge
since 1990.
She was a homemaker and a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church
in Jenkintown, Pa.
Her husband David F. Muir, whom she married Nov. 7, 1935, died Nov.
1, 1978.
Survivors include two daughters, Sister Elizabeth Muir of Anaheim, Calif,
and Barbara Muir Gisinger Biancucci of Palatine Bridge; two sons, the Rev.
Gavin W, Muir of Philadelphia and Robert D. Muir of Winnetha, Calif; eight
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St.
Irenaeus Church in Philadelphia, where calling hours are scheduled 7 to
9 p.m. Thursday.
Burial will be in New Cathedral Cemetery, Philadelphia.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Loretto Nursing Home
building fund, 302 Swart Hill Road, Amsterdam.
Local arrangements are by the Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home,
20 Otsego St., Canajoharie.
Phinniah Sullivan
Phinniah F. Sullivan, 82, of West Chatham, Mass., died Monday at Cape
Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Mass.
She was born April 1, 1915, in Amsterdam, the daughter of Alexander
and Hanna M. Finlay Doak, and was raised in educated in Amsterdam.
From 1957 to 1997, she was a receptionist for D.J. DeLuke dental office
in Amsterdam. She moved to West Chatham, Mass., in 1996.
While living in Amsterdam, she was an active member of the United Methodist
Church of Amsterdam, a member of the Uptown League, and a member of the
Ladies Independent Bowling League.
She married Charles Sullivan in Amsterdam in 1943; he died in 1990.
Survivors include a daughter, Carol Cummings of West Chatham, Mass.;
two sisters, Gladys Tabor of West Chatham and Ann Tomlinson of DeLand,
Fla; and four grandchildren.
The funeral is 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church of Amsterdam,
Golf Course Road.
Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam.
A calling hour will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of
Amsterdam.
