Delmar - Elizabeth Abbott Rowe, Delmar died Monday, March 25, 2002 at Albany Medical Center Hospital.
Mrs. Rowe was born in Reading, Michigan, the daughter of the late Otis and Belle Abbott. She was the widow of Dr. Robert C. Rowe, former director of the Educational Communications Center at the State University of New York at Albany. Since her husband's death she has lived with her daughter in Delmar. Mrs. Rowe received degrees from Hillsdale College, University of Michigan and SUNY Albany.
She was a registered nurse in both Michigan and New York. Before moving to New York, Professor Rowe taught in Michigan schools. She was a member of the faculty at Hillsdale College and was supervisor of pediatrics at Sparrow Hospital School of Nursing, Lansing Michigan. While on the faculty at Hillsdale College Mrs. Rowe received a W.K. Kellogg grant to develop a course in Health Education for college students.
During World War II she taught an emergency program to nurse aides for the Michigan State Board of Education. Later, she served with the Red Cross Nurses Association.
After moving to Slingerlands in 1956, Professor Rowe taught at St. Agnes School and in Bethlehem Central School District. In 1963 she joined the Biology faculty at Hudson Valley Community College. In 1975 Professor Rowe received the New York State Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. She retired from Hudson Valley Community College in 1977. In 2000, she received the Capital District Senior Issues Forum's Lifetime Achievement Award.
Mrs. Rowe was the mother of Laurie Ann Rowe of Delmar, Robert Abbott Rowe and his wife Janet of Shelburne, Vermont, Mary Christine Rowe of Michigan; grandmother of Christopher Rowe and Peter Rowe of Michigan; aunt of Julee Barass and George Ann Tourney of Ohio and cousin to Worth Thompson; Carl and Ruth Blosdale, James and Marvel Osborne, and Kenneth Osborne all of Michigan.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 12 noon in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Elsmere Avenue, Delmar with Rev. Darius Mojallali, Rector, officiating. Entombment will be in St. Stephen's Columbarium. There will be no calling hours.

Joseph A. Salvato Jr., 87
TROY - Joseph A. Salvato Jr., 87, of Eddy Memorial Geriatric Center and formerly of Meadow Drive North Greenbush, died Friday at the home after a long illness.
Born in Middle Village Queens, NY he was son of the late Joseph A. and Antonina Russo Salvato Sr. and husband of the late Hazel Rocca Salvato.
He received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1936 and his Masters in Civil Engineering in Sanitary in 1939 from New York University.
Mr. Salvato retired in 1978 as New York State Assistant Commissioner for the Division of Sanitary Engineering, now the Division of Environmental Protection and had also held positions of Director of the Bureau of General Engineering and Sanitation Services and Associate Director of the Division of General Engineering and Radiological Health. Since then he has been a consultant in Sanitary and Public Health Engineering and in 1981 he was Adjunct Associate Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Prior to that he worked for F.G. Libassi as a land surveyor assistant, George Colon & Son, Inc. General Contracting and Engineering as an estimator and assistant construction superintendent, NYS Department of Health, Poughkeepsie District office as an Assistant and District Sanitary Engineer, the US Army Sanitary Corps as an Assistant Medical Inspector and District Sanitary Officer in the US, Alaska and the Yukon Territory, the Erie County Health Department as Chief of the Bureau of General Sanitation, the Rensselaer County Health Department as Director of the Division of Environmental Hygiene and from 1961-1962 the US Army Chief of the Public Health Team and Civil Affairs Group in the US and El Salvador, C.A. Health Department as Chief of the Bureau of General Sanitation, the Rensselaer County Health Department as Director of the Division of Environmental Hygiene and from 1961-1962 the US Army Chief of the Public Health Team and Civil Affairs Group in the US and El Salvador, C.A.
Mr. Salvato had written many books, publications, bulletins and articles on all topics relating to sanitary engineering and had been a special consultant to many organizations including the World Health Organization in 1972. He held licenses as a Registered Professional Engineer, a Principal Public Health Engineer, a Grade 1 Public Water Supply Operator and a Grade 1 Sewage Treatment Plant Operator.
He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Public Health Association, American Water Works Association, Water Pollution Control Federation, Royal Society of Health, American Academy of Environmental Engineers- Diplomate, National Environmental Health Association, New York Public Health Association, International Association Milk, Food and Environmental Sanitation, American Chemical Society, Association of Food and Drug Officials, NYS Association of Milk and Food Sanitarians and the National Conference of Local Environmental Health Administrators and many past activities as chairman and member of various committees, task forces, section councils and executive committees.
Mr. Salvato had also received many awards including the Charles C. Agar Award from the NY Water Pollution Control Federation, Samuel Arnold Greeley Award from the American society of Civil Engineers, Distinguished Service and Professional Achievements from APHA section on Environment, National Environmental Health Association Past Presidents Award and the George Warren Fuller Award by the American Water Works Association, Army veteran of WW II.
Survivors include a sister Lillian Salvato Roe of San Juan Capistrano, CA; a niece Lynne Roe of San Juan Capistrano, CA; a nephew Joseph R. Roe of Murrieta, CA and 2 grand nieces and a grand nephew. He was predeceased by a son Joseph Salvato.
Funeral service will be held at Wednesday at 9:30am from St. Michael the Archangel Church Williams Road North Greenbush where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment Bloomingrove Cemetery in Defreestville.

George Rhoden, 77
Troy - George Rhoden, 77, of Horton Avenue, died Thursday January 3, 2002 at Northeast Center Kingston, after a long illness.
Born in Palmetto, Florida he was son of the late George J. and Isabell Shaw Rhoden and husband of the late Helen Elizabeth Seibert Rhoden and Dorothy LaFrance Rhoden. He had resided in Troy since 1946 and was educated in Florida.
Mr. Rhoden was a machine operator for Norton Company in Watervliet for 35 ½ years retiring in July of 1983. Prior to that he worked at Railway Express.
He was a member of the Apollo King Solomon Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies in Florida, Oriental Shrine and the Third Presbyterian Church in Troy and a Marine Corp veteran of World War II.
Survivors include four daughters Geraldine M. Jones of Troy, Linda E. Kimmey and husband Bart of Franklin, NC, JoAnn Gapp and husband Ronald of Rancho Cucamonga, CA and Janet L. Hough of Hudson; a son George K. Rhoden and wife Nancy of Troy; a step daughter Elizabeth Iberger and husband Frank of Schenectady; a brother Tony Rhoden of Florida; a sister Doris Amaker of Columbia, SC; 16 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and a nephew and a niece.
Funeral service will be held Monday at 2:00pm from the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. corner of Pawling at Maple Avenues in Troy with Rev. Margaret Fletcher Patrie, 87
Troy - Margaret Fletcher Patrie, 87, of North Lake Avenue, died Monday at Samaritan Hospital Troy, after a brief illness.
Born in Albany, she was daughter of the late William A. and Margaret Gackenheimer Fletcher and wife for 58 years of the late Russell W. Patrie, Sr. She had resided in Troy most of her life and was a graduate of Catholic Central High School.
Mrs. Patrie was a homemaker and for many years was a legal secretary for Smith, Pattison, Sampson and Jones in Troy.
She was active, through her husband, in the Troy Lodge of Elks, a member of the Speigleaires dance group and a communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Sister Mary Anitra, Sister of Mercy of Rensselaer and Kathryn E. 'Kit' Pettit and husband Bryan of Troy; a son, Russell W. Patrie Jr. and wife Heather of Troy; a sister, Rosemarie Bonesteel of Marietta, GA; three granddaughters Cheryl Lynn Klaven of Boston, Renee Patrie of WA and Maggie Foster Patrie of Troy; a cousin Virginia LaPorte and husband Jim of Kansas City, MO and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother William Fletcher.

Raymond J. Yanus, 57
Troy - Raymond J. Yanus, 57, of Sixth Avenue, died early Monday at St. Mary's
Hospital Troy, after an illness.
Born in Albany, he was son of the late Raymond and Laura Yanus. He had resided
in Averill Park from 1962-90 and in Troy in later years and was educated at Albany
schools.
Mr. Yanus was a construction worker with the Rensselaer County Highway
Department, retiring 10 years ago due to disability.
He was a member of Construction and General Laborers Local Union #190 and the
Sand Lake Republication Club.
Survivors include a son Raymond A. Yanus of North Greenbush ; a daughter
Christina E. Valerio of Albany; a sister Adela of Troy; four brothers James, George,
Michael and Steven Yanus all of this area; a grandson David Coddington Yanus; his
former wife Annette Yanus of North Greenbush and many nieces and nephews.

William H. O'Brien Sr., 81
Troy - William H. O'Brien Sr., 81, of Ford Avenue, died Friday at Samaritan
Hospital Troy, after a long illness.
Born in Troy, he was son of the late John W. and Carrie Helfrich O'Brien and
husband of the late Rae E. Miller O'Brien. He had resided in the Troy area all his
life and was a graduate of Catholic Central High School.
Mr. O'Brien was employed at John A. Manning Paper Company in Green Island
for 43 years retiring 20 years ago.
He was a member of the Troy Lodge of Elks, Emerald Athletic Club, Vagabond
Club, Geerholt- Rehm Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post Wynantskill, American
Legion Post Wynantskill, the Paper makers Union; a communicant of Sacred Heart
Church in Troy and was an active member of the East Side Seniors. He was an
Army veteran of World War II stationed in Guadalcanal.
Survivors include a son William H. O'Brien Jr. of Troy ; a beloved friend Aileen
Picarillo of Troy; a daughter-in-law Sandra O'Brien of Colonie; several
grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son James W.
O'Brien and a brother John W. O'Brien.

Mary A. Nugent, 97
Troy - Mary A. Nugent, 97, of Westover Road, died Wednesday at Samaritan
Hospital Troy, after a long illness.
Born in Watervliet, she was daughter of the late William C. and Loretta McCarthy
Nugent. She had resided in Troy most of her life and was educated at the College of
New Rochelle; received her Masters degree from the State University of New York
at Albany and did her graduate work at Columbia University.
Miss Nugent taught in the Troy public school district in schools 13 and 12 and in
Watervliet High School and was an instructor at Russell Sage College. She retired
from the Troy City School District as Director of Elementary Education and
Psychological Services.
She was a communicant of St. Francis de Sales Church in Troy.
Survivors include two nephews William Nugent II of Boston and Daniel W. Nugent
Jr. of Clifton Park and a Grand niece Kristen Nugent of Clifton Park. She was
predeceased by three sisters Ruth G. Nugent, Anne F. Vaughan and Catherine W.
Heiss and a brother Daniel W. Nugent.
Funeral service will be private at the convenience of the family.
Interment St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands.
