Jane E. Hotz
TROY - Jane Eleanor Hotz, 86, died peacefully Monday, December 7, 2009, at Eddy Memorial Geriatric Center in Troy.
Jane was predeceased by her husband, Theodore; her parents Henry Kaftanksi and Marie Baronowski; and a sister, Helen Wicelinski. Jane is survived by her loving son, Robert Hotz and daughter-in-law, Ellen, of Defreestville; her grandsons, Nicholas Hotz and his wife Danielle, of Castleton-on-the-Hudson, and Daniel Hotz, of Albany.
Jane was born in Staten Island and christened Janina Eleanora Kaftanski at St. Adalbert Catholic Church. Jane grew up in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, and moved with her husband, Ted to Farmingdale, L.I., where they raised their son, Robert. She and Ted moved to Rensselaer County in 1987 to be closer to Bob, Ellen, Nick and Dan, where they treasured and enjoyed their grandsons, participated in all their childhood events and special milestones.
Jane’s marriage to Ted is a loving and inspirational story. They met in grade school, and were in love from that early age. Ted was a quiet, reserved man; but in his letters to Jane from France and Italy during WWII, he expressed his deepest love for her. The numerous V-Mail letters are wonderful to read, and an enduring family treasure.
While Ted served his country as a soldier, Jane also worked as a factory seamstress to support the war effort on the home front. Ted asked Jane to marry him while he was still overseas, after the battle of Anzio. His sister Mary bought and his brother Andrew presented the ring on Ted’s behalf. Jane and Ted were married at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Greenpoint, Brooklyn, on May 5, 1946, and their marriage thrived for 51 years until Ted’s death in 1997.
Jane committed her life to making a wonderful home for her husband, Ted and their son. She and Ted were devoted parents and grandparents, loving and generous. Jane possessed great resilience, and daily she overcame life-long epilepsy, with bravery and courage.
Her marriage to Ted was wonderfully traditional, as she was the homemaker, he was the breadwinner. Jane never drove a car, and did not write a check or balance a checkbook until after Ted’s death. After a lifetime of mutual dependence with her husband, Jane amazed us with her ability to adapt to widowhood, with her determination to learn new skills, make new friends and live her life fully.
She will be remembered for the many hand-made Christmas decorations and colorful, crocheted clothes hangers that inhabit too many homes to mention. Finally, Jane was a role model these past three years, as she heroically and gracefully endured the slow, assertive decline from Alzheimer’s disease.

Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 1-5 p.m.
Internment will be in the Gerald B. H. Solomon National Cemetery, Schuylerville.
